    Chicken Soup Dumplings
    Hanay W.

Dumpling district is a tiny restaurant beside the H mart, with a Kung Fu Boba Tea inside of it. The service was nice and quick. I ordered the chicken soup dumplings which were fresh & flavorful! I wish they had more soup in them, but it was mainly filling. I would definitely come back and try their other dumpling flavors!

We ordered two orders of the rainbow soup dumplings to get a taste of all they had to offer. Our favorite were the crab and pork and truffle soup dumplings. The qualities of the soup and the dumpling skin were A+. None of dumplings broke upon presentation, super important! Very flavorful and almost burned my tongue so be careful as the food was made to order and super fresh! This is one of those no frills casual eateries with exceptional food quality. Don't let the rough exterior dissuade you from trying these amazing soup dumplings. Definitely hit my craving for soup dumplings without breaking the bank especially in this economy.

Freshly cooked, delicious dumplings if you're craving classic dumplings or bao with quick service. So yummy!

I like that it's a shared space with KungFu Tea so that you can enjoy some boba tea with your meal! The soup dumplings were underwhelming. There wasn't any soup really. Maybe we got a bad batch but there were 3 of us and we each got a rainbow dumpling order to try all of the flavors. Aside from the lack of soup, my favorite filling was the truffle one. Also ironic that everything else we got was better than the soup dumplings (what the place is known).

We ordered an Egg and Cruller Wrap, Scallion Pancake, Pork & Rice Shumai, Chicken XLB, Pan Fried Pork Buns, and Cucumbers. Order was ready on time but know that since its was a Sunday so it took around 45 minutes due to how busy it was. We really liked the Pork & Rice Shumai and the Pan Fried Pork buns were our favorites. Both filled really well. The Chicken XLB (like most carryout dumplings) kind of exploded mostly so we didn't get the best experience there but the flavor was good. The egg cruller wrap was solid but doesn't travel well. The scallion pancake was a little thicker/breadier than I'm used to. Cucumbers were solid. This place definitely needs to be experienced dine in, especially based on how busy their dining room was that day. If you're in a rush though, their takeout is solid.

A solid spot for sharing with a group, and I'd happily return to explore more of the menu. I really wanted to love this place. The soup dumplings are among the better ones in the area. While the wrappers aren't as thin or chewy as the very best, you can tell they're handmade, and I'll always appreciate that. I'd recommend sticking with the pork soup dumplings since they were rich, savory, and full of umami. The crab version unfortunately didn't have any noticeable crab flavor and tasted almost identical to the pork. The duck came in a generous portion and is a great choice for anyone who enjoys sweeter flavors. The watercress was fresh and plentiful, but it could have used much more garlic. We ended up adding the wonton chili oil and dipping it for extra flavor. The cucumber was delicious, but the portion was way too small. The bean curd was cooked well, though there wasn't enough pork for a dish that was supposed to feature it. The fish was another highlight with light spice, a crispy exterior, and perfectly cooked, tender meat. Overall, I'd definitely come back to try more dishes. I enjoy the home-style cooking, and it's the kind of restaurant that's especially fun to visit with a larger group so you can sample a variety of dishes.

When I picked it up I realized it had a pretty dirty screen with some greasy fingerprints. Not a comfortable feeling that I had to order thru the screen that previous customers had used. Dishes we ordered included the scallion pancake (tasty but quite greasy), Tibetan cumin lamb (very good flavor for the lamb but ordered mild and it came loaded with hot peppers), braised eggplant and green beans ( the best of the four items ordered, seasoned nicely and the green beans were cooked the right amount to be slightly chewy and flavorful), and Vegetable chow fun (came in a substantial puddle of soy sauce after we checked the box for less soy sauce!). Our service person seemed to be the only person serving all the customers in our section of the restaurant. Our third entree followed the other two by at least 10 minutes. Only after I could find our server and could inquire did we learn they still had it in the kitchen and had not brought it out. Also, we never did get a refill of our water glasses.

The portions are incredibly generous, and every dish we tried was delicious. The drunken noodles were packed with flavor, the fried rice was perfectly cooked, the Tso's chicken was excellent, and the steamed fish was fresh and beautifully prepared. The highlight of the meal was the spectacular tableside Flambé dessert--it was both delicious and a fun experience. The service was exceptional. Our waitress was incredibly sweet, attentive, and made sure we were well taken care of throughout the meal. The owners were also warm and welcoming, adding to the wonderful dining experience. But what we did get was pretty darn good (if a bit pricey)! The style is much more authentic, so if you're looking for something like Hunan Cafe (Greenbriar), or that NOVA institution China King, this is different. Is it better? For the most part, yes. (But I still crave that Americanized sweet, spicy, glazey brown sauce that comes in slight variations in so many dishes). I had the hot and sour soup, Szechuan spicy fried eggplant sticks, Taiwanese rice noodles with fried tofu, and the Chengdu twice cooked pork. Everything was excellent, except....the hot and sour soup. Honestly, Hunan Cafe and China King beat the pants off this place's hot and sour soup. Here, it was a bit too sweet. It had some red chilies in it, but I could not detect much white pepper. And it's a vegetarian version, so no small bits of chicken or pork. I'd skip this the next time I order from here. But the other dishes... amazing! The noodles were light-tasting but still delicious. The eggplant was garnished with cilantro, garlic, salt, and red chili sauce. The twice cooked pork was sauteed with sliced leeks and the same red chili sauce. I think that's the fresh, zingy, spice flavor profile I like that can't be found at Americanized Chinese restaurants. Sure, China King has its place and I'll still go back there when I'm close (RIP China King Fair Lakes and Herndon). And admittedly, I go to that awful Panda chain occasionally because I never learn. The unfortunate thing is, I'll more likely go to these places than Cheng's because of the price. The pork dish was $21 and the noodle dish was $19. My total bill came to $60 before tax and tip. If I need to stuff my face with a Chinese umami bomb fast, I'm probably going to the other places for $15-30. I do want to try the rest of the menu at Cheng's, but it's going to be a drawn-out process for the sake of my wallet. I'd be remiss if I didn't include a comment from my dining partner. She compared the quality and taste of the food at Cheng's to Peter Chang's (either Peter Chang's-Herndon, or Mama Chang Fairfax). A high compliment. But she said the value is better at those places' AYCE options than what we got at Cheng's, and I agree. If you've been to none of these places, you have to try them all at least once.

The food itself was extremely disappointing, but what made the experience even worse was the fact that our order was missing ingredients that were supposed to be part of the dishes. When we questioned why our meal had no vegetables, we were told that they had simply been left out. That's not something we expected, especially given what we ordered. To make matters worse, we were rushed out and told that we needed to leave because the restaurant was closing. What was especially uncomfortable was seeing other customers upstairs who were still eating, ordering food, and being loud. When we asked why they were allowed to stay while we were being asked to leave, the owner told us that they were "special customers." That comment was extremely off-putting and left us feeling as though we were being treated as less important or less welcome. The only positive part of the experience was our waiter, who was polite and pleasant despite the situation. Overall, between the disappointing food, missing ingredients, and the way we were treated at the end of the meal, this was a very unpleasant experience. We certainly expected better and, unfortunately, would not return based on this experience.
