Our family took a morning trip out to Bob's Well Bread for breakfast after seeing that the bakery was profiled in the AAA magazine that featured recommended places to stop on the Central Coast off HWY 101. Sounds contrived as I have never left a negative Yelp review, but our recent experience appears to counter the majority, but we found that $100 for a few and not particularly fresh (hard) and bland, tasteless baking goods seemed excessive, and even the bread was hard. A paradox for a bakery. Candidly, disappointing and have enjoyed baked goods at significantly less cost, and that presented notably better quality. read more

Everything here is always super yummy. Be patient and know that you will probably have a line. Make sure to order extra bread to take home if you are staying and eating there. You will want more of their good baked goods later once you've tasted what they offer. Staff is always super busy but very friendly and helpful even with a line wrapping around inside and out the front door. Again, expect a wait and be patient. It's worth the wait. read more

On a non Covid weekday I'm sure this place is great. Sat outside and literally waiting 90 min to even enter to order. Was hot and many tables offered no shade. Sat down at a table that took forever to be cleaned. When I finally was allowed in the Owner was at the register to take the order and was grumpy and in a hurry to rush me out. Baked goods were lacking and in the end he requested a tip for what I thought was rotten service. After all the only service I got was a grumpy slow moving order taker. And to ask for it......? Isn't that my prerogative? Another 45 min till food came. What I will day and try to end on a positive note is that the food was very good. What a great find! It looks like an old service station. Rustic interior, great sandwiches and a shaded patio next to a large field, makes for a relaxing lunch. Specialty baking is their selling point. My meal was well-prepared. I thought my selection was a tad small, but it tasted great and my salad was tasty. They may have good food, but I have stopped there several times and there are always a lot of people waiting for their food. Sometimes people have told me they have been waiting for over an hour. Bob's Well Bread Bakery has become an institution in Central California. The town of Los Alamos is popping up on the radar with its cute Western-themed main street (Bell Street), multiple wineries, and top-notch restaurants. Nonetheless, Bob's has been a big part of putting the town on the map since giving life to a converted gas station. So much so that a second location is on the way in Ballard! This is a family-owned spot with Bob the owner almost always running the register and taking orders. While Bob is not always the most outgoing person, he sure is very courteous and focused on producing the best baked goods around. There are no added preservatives in anything they bake and their goal is to source as much of their ingredients locally using farmers and growers who practice the purest growing initiatives. Bob's uses Old World European baking traditions, touch and love involving "high hydration, combined with long fermentation and baking in stone-deck oven creat[ing] an irregular and open cell structure in [their] loaves" (text credit to: https://www.bobswellbread.com/pages/about-us). I can tell you from my own countless visits that all this is true--and it shows! No matter what you order you won't be disappointed. A few recommendations: French baguette sandwiches (perfect for the nearby wineries and picnicking--note: they don't serve mayo so BYOM), English Muffin Turkey Sausage sandwich (an elevated take on the Egg McMuffin; little known that it was first sold in Santa Barbara, CA before McDonalds!), almond croissant (can never go wrong with this option) and the precious Canelé (rum and vanilla pastry with a soft custard filling covered in a burnt, caramelized sugar crust). Weekends can be super busy so one recommendation is to arrive early. The queue lines up along the merchandise cabinets toward the bathroom then wraps back around to the door. The salad was dry and had no vinaigrette. The bread not very fresh and a member of the staff was rude to a number of customers.

Excellent food but beware of the line--it gets long. They open at 7am and there are only a couple of other options before 10am in Los Alamos. They do their best to keep things moving, have a separate coffee only side. A big outside area, a small enclosed indoor/outdoor area--not much indoor as you can't even get inside once the line builds. Once you order, they give you your coffee and bakery items if ordered; then you can easily find a seat and they bring you your hot food order promptly. Super cute hidden gem near Solvang! I got the Croque Monsieur avec une salade, and paired it with the agua fresca. It was such a perfect amount for lunch. Everything seemed so fresh. For dessert, I got the everything cookie, and it was really good! I think the concept behind the cookie is it's a mixture of various types of cookie (chocolate chip, oatmeal, etc). There are plenty of seats indoors and outdoors. I noticed a lot of people dropping buy to get these thinner sandwiches to-go. I'll have to try that next time! Update- Still just as wonderful. Got a loaf of bread yesterday and some nice granola, I had the egg in a jar. Today managed to finagle a couple of Kouign Amman, the famed chocolate croissants and lattes. Did not disappoint, as usual. You call in and order and just pick up. This operation is a well-oiled machine and just as effective as usual. I still think this may be the best bakery I've ever been to. We went all four days we were here, if they had been open later, I probably would have gone twice. Their hours are slightly reduced due to Covid 19, but it doesn't affect quality at all. ----------- Superb. We have gone here two days in a row. Thus far we have sampled the Pain au chocolate, English muffins, Kouign Amman, egg in a square, egg in a jar and the the cinnamon bun thing, which I've forgotten what they called it. All were exceptional, to say the least. It will be difficult to tear ourselves away to try anything else in town because it has all been fabulous. I do love me some good bread! The egg in a jar is very hearty, with a perfectly cooked egg perched on top. It was lovely looking and even better tasting. The purple potatoes were a nice touch. Very pretty and the heavy starch of the potatoes was satisfying and filling. The egg in a square was also excellent. The chocolate croissant was delicious, but the Kouign Amman and cinnamon bun blew me away. I don't recall having any better pastries in the US. It rivals the best pastries of Paris, Vienna, Stockholm, etc. Go to this lovely little town and eat some of this bread. You will not be disappointed, unless you are gluten free. No time like a pandemic to try a restaurant I have heard so much about! I love Reuben sandwiches so I thought I'd jump right in and test theirs out. I was so excited that I took a bite before I snapped the photo! It did not disappoint; all the components were perfect thus making a perfect Reuben moment. The bread was grilled just right so it was soft and crunchy. The homemade corn beef was meaty yet not tough. The cheese, onions and sauce all brought their own zing without any distraction. TWO times we've drive all the way out here from Pismo and they've been closed when both their website and Yelp said they were open. We decided to give it them one last try, so we pull up during business hours, the place seems open so we're off to a good start. We stand in line for 15 minutes to have someone come out and say "we're experiencing internet issues. Cash only". Well we only have $30 cash on us and most dishes are $15 each so that got us two small meals, no coffee, no pastries or bread we were planning on buying to take with us. This small bakery in Los Alamos is a nice touch to this small town. Their baked goods and coffee were delicious. I had their Iced Cafe Mocha and the breakfast sandwich with arugula salad...Arugula can be a bit of a bitter-tasting plant, but they prepared it with a balanced citrus oil-based dressing. I also had their baguette, prosciutto, and egg sandwich. The bread is pretty hard, which is how a baguette traditionally is supposed to be. This spot smelt amazing as soon as I got out of the car. The line was long so we ended up choosing from the options already made, instead of waiting for our food to be made, still more than worth it. We got a couple cookies, the ham and Swiss croissant, a breakfast bun, a pistachio chocolate croissant, and a ham and Swiss sandwich. It was a perfect spot to stop, and such a hidden gem. The morning line seems to happen often on weekends, so don't expect to go in and out, if you're a normal decent patient person this spot is to die for! I want to start by saying the food was really good but the service left us not wanting to come back. When asking questions we were met with annoyance and attitude. I get that they probably were not happy that they had to work on New Year's Day but it made for a disappointing trip. I get times are tough and we are all dealing with are own things but this interaction really put us off. The food was great. I got the breakfast sandwich with egg whites on a fresh made English muffin. When we were checking out the male cashier said "breakfast sandwich with egg whites only" I then stated oh doesn't that come with turkey sausage and he looked at me rolled his eyes and said yes. I was just checking because he stated egg whites only. At this point I decided I needed to walk out. As much as I would love to come back here its hard to drop money at a place that seems to not appreciate their customers. I have been to this town at least 6 times over the last few years and have always been met with such amazing hospitality. Maybe this was an off day or maybe this is tolerated behavior. Very busy location. This was our first visit as we were traveling. With Bob's input I chose the Pain de Levain to go with our host's braised short ribs that evening. It worked well. I'd have gone with an olive loaf if available that day. Hope to return in the future. read more

We have been here a few times and this location is just a short drive for us coming from Santa Maria. We purchased the biscuit, sticky bun and the chocolate croissant. The biscuit. I believe it was salt and pepper. They warmed it up there and we had ours with butter only (usually butter and jam). It was really good both the wife and I were big fans. Sticky Bun. I warmed it up at home. It was sticky and it was a bun. But it was a little drier then I like and despite the stickiness it was still very crispy/airy. I probably would not get it again. The chocolate croissant looked great. Lots of chocolate inside. I went to heat it up that afternoon but my daughter had beat me to it. She gave a thumbs up, so Im pretty sure it was a winner. On a Thursday morning around 9AM parking was easy, but there isn't really a true designated area so just grab an open spot along the road. Needed to get out of house so right brain, friends and I came here for a picnic break. Los Alamos is a small westerny town off Hwy 101. This has been a favourite place of ours for five yrs now. The food in incredibly delicious and if your lucky to chat with Bob someday his story is amazing. So we picked our awesome sandwiches, short wait, and headed for the park. First Time here We made two stops on the way to Avila and coming home from Avila. We absolutely love their Salami/Pesto Sandwich for breakfast or lunch! We arrived here around 9:30 a.m. The line was all the way to the back in front of the restrooms. It took about 20 minutes to get to the front of the line, but it helped to prepare my list of things that I wanted to get before I got up to the register. Each item is so perfectly executed. The bread alone is a work of art. Each loaf ranges in price but the two that we got were there signature Pain Au Levain $8 & Sesame Sourdough $8. We also ordered: -Croissant -Coconut Macaroon -Pretzel They were all so delicious and made with love. A big plus about the location of this bakery is that it's right off the highway and it's right in between Santa Barbara and SLO. My husband and I came on a Sunday morning around 10:30/11 and it was packed as you would expect for a Sunday morning and most of the items in the display case we're already mostly gone. I will say the wait to just order food did take quite a bit of time (a good 30 mins or more for 8 couples in front of us) , it's a order and sit yourself down type of situation and they bring you your food. I ordered a egg in a frame #1 and my husband got the egg sandwich on a biscuit, the sourdough bread was great and my husband enjoyed his sandwich but it wasn't anything off the charts. Cute spot, order at the counter and then sit on park benches outside. They'll bring the food out to you. Food: We tried a handful of dishes. I enjoyed the lox on an everything bagel. I liked it a lot because portions of everything (but salmon) were good. They serve two giant steak tomatoes, bunch of capers, enough onions and cream cheese, enough lox to cover a bagel and a 1/4. Bagel was good. Next day, tried the egg on their specialty bread. This was less excited, a ton of tomatoes, too many. Well seasoned egg, but not enough of the seasoning, found this one a little boring. Coffee isn't for me, but I can't put my finger on why. A little too bitter for my liking, but coffee is tough to find one brew for everyone. People seem to love the lard, so that's something to look for when they add it on a dish. I also ordered the veggie sando in the display case, which was actually quite good for what it was. I've mentioned this, and they said that they basically like it that way. A second order person could easily be added. it takes forever. food is good.
