Although most people categorize the food as Italian, I would say it's fusion and really not Italian per se. they do serve pasta but it's not served in a traditional way. 4 stars for a really solid Italian restaurant. My wife and I decided to check out Boccalupo, located over on Edgewood, one night based on some recommendations from friends. We could have sat outside because there was plenty of outside seating, but decided to sit inside and have the full Italian experience. The bar inside was pretty poppin' and concerned me about being able to get good service, but fortunately the waitress we had (who was also playing hostess half of the time) was on top of her game and ready to help us with anything we need. My wife decided to put in an order for various items while I decided to go with the tasting menu to give us good balance. The first item we had come out was the fried oyster starter. While it didn't blow us away, it was a fun little dish with a nice Italian twist on fried oysters. After waiting for a little bit, we then moved on to several items. The first was this item I will describe as a salad but had some sweet crunchies on top that made it pretty fun. We also had the famous black spaghetti come out, which was a really solid dish that I was glad to try but also glad wasn't my full meal, as well as a meat dish that my wife ordered and liked. What really stood out about this night was our central dish: the carolina gold and corn risotto with tomato and duck. This dish was quite large and absolutely delicious! The picture makes it look like quite a mess of a dish (and tbf it could be plated a little better), but it was a really unique and tasty dish that I would order again and again. We grabbed our dessert soon after and headed out into the night with happy and full bellys. Overall, BoccaLupo provided us with a solid Italian experience that really had some unique takes on dishes. So good that I'm afraid to broadcast their greatness. One of our faves for many years, this is truly a neighborhood secret. It is only blocks from the Beltline and Krog Street Market so plan to walk off dinner afterwards. Service is outstanding, the menu has classics like 20 yolk tagliatelle and black spaghetti, and the food quality is out of this world. You may have to wait to get that Saturday night reservation but it will be worth it. New menu items rotate in periodically and they offer a fantastic tasting menu. Try the meatball starter to share (or not share) and you'll be hooked. If you like spicy, the black spaghetti will knock your socks off. I'll start out by saying our server was awesome, as was another person who explained each cocktail in detail. The food was good for the prices. The cons outweigh the above, hence the two stars. We received multiple texts telling us we must be on time for our reservation or else. Ours was at 5:30, so we arrived around 5:20. We - and about 15 other people who also got there a few minutes early because of all the texts - were not permitted to enter the restaurant until exactly 5:30. Seemed really extra, and my friend and I got eaten up by mosquitoes outside while we waited. When we mentioned that to the hostess, she said it was kind of hard to avoid this time of year. How we could have avoided it was being welcomed into the restaurant five minutes early. I had looked at the menu online ahead of time to get an idea of the food and wine list, as well as the $$$ since I'm on a bit of a budget. Everything seemed reasonable, but when I looked at the actual menu, the wines by the glass had doubled in price. There was nothing less than $20+ available unless you ordered the house red or white, which I had to do. I was with good friends, so I didn't have any shame there, but I would have been too embarrassed to do that on a date or business outing and would have had to opt for a $25 glass of wine. After a flight delay that placed me smack dab in the middle of rush hour traffic, I eliminated a restaurant I wanted to try located outside the core city of Atlanta. It was time for an alternative and BoccaLupo was my second choice. It still took an hour's drive, but the reward was a comfortable setting with stunning food. The roasted Cauliflower was perfectly browned and the mix of tart and tangy flavors was exceptional. I had a hard choice picking an entree. So many vied for attention and I didn't have a hankering for anything in particular. After longer than I normally take, I selected the 20 Yoke Tagliatelle. The beauty here was the varied selection of mushrooms, each and every type perfectly prepared. How did they do that? Some surely must take more or less preparation time. Were they done individually? However it happens, this was special. The Panna Cotta dessert was equally tasty and a perfect bow on the meal. This was a pleasant spot also. The space invites relaxation and the staff was warm. I continue to be impressed with the new age pasta houses that I find across Atlanta, and BoccaLupo deserves their acclaim. Star 1: How was the Service and Atmosphere? Really great atmosphere here at BoccaLupo with fantastic service to match. Even towards the tail end of these covid restrictions we all felt safe and distanced at what was a super comfortable and quaint outdoor seating area. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Really reasonable prices across the board here at BoccaLupo with some of the flagship pasta dishes that can easily be shared ringing in right around $20.00 per plate. Star. Stars 3 & 4: How was the food? This was good stuff. The highlight was, without question, the spicy tuna crudo atop crispy rice, which was one of the best iterations of the dish that I can recall having to include those at top tier sushi spots across the country. What a dish. The pasta was also very good, and in sampling the black spaghetti, the fettuccini and the kale spaghetti dish I was impressed although admittedly not as blown away as I was with the tuna crudo. My wife and I decided to go to Boccalupo for dinner since we were here visiting Atlanta. It has been several years since we were here, so I was really looking forward to experiencing the cuisine once more. Let me start by saying that the service was impeccable. The host and hostess were attentive and "cool/chill". The server was awesome as well. Ok, with that out of the way....Here is why '3 star' ...we ordered the meat ball appetizer, the chicken Parm, the ravioli and the 20 yolk pasta. Everything was ok...All the dishes were "fusion" per say...nothing about them.was traditional. Nothing wrong with that but....some were hits and misses. The ravioli was just ok...nothing really stands out. My wife did not enjoy it. I ordered the chicken Parm. It was good however the bed of noodles where the chicken sat was flavorless...just plain noodles. The 20 yolk pasta was pretty good but not outstanding. Overall it was just ok...we also order dessert...that really was not good....it was a chocolate mouse with some fried dough ( don't remember the name) With all that I would still give it 4 stars because maybe I'm the one that do not like these flavors....BUT...the reason I deducted one star is because when everything was set and done ..on the way back to our hotel...my wife got sick and later that evening I was sick too... completely unacceptable. I am a bit hesitant to write a review about this place, because it might get harder to get in. After moving to the area and dining in quite a few restaurants here BoccaLupo goes far and beyond in food, drinks, service and ambiance! We decided to go a little early and have cocktails before our reservation and grabbed a table outside on the terrace. Jason came out and immediately introduced us to two of their specialty cocktails - delicious! We then sat in Zoe's section and we have voted her the best server in Atlanta! Not only is she extremely friendly and knowledgeable, but very attentive. There isn't an item on their menu that we haven't loved.... We live a few blocks away and we consider ourselves lucky. It is hard to get in, but often times you can check Resy the day of and they may have open tables last minute. Run don't walk! You won't regret it! read more

This is a fantastic restaurant. The service is top-notch, the ambiance is great, it's low-key but definitely fine dining. They have fun cocktails and a wide selection of small-plate first course offerings. I gave it four stars because of the prices vs. the portions. I ordered the most expensive main course, a $39. scallop risotto. It was prepared perfectly and was delicious. I'm a small person, and I almost never finish my meal. I was still hungry after this and risotto is very filling. It was a tiny portion. Surprising at a $39. price point. The meals should at least come with some crusty bread. My dining companions ordered goat cheese ravioli and Black spaghetti with Rock shrimp. Both were delicious and the portions were much better and normal sizes. I don't know if they ran out of my risotto and that's why it was a tiny portion or what happened. The scallops were cut into very small bites too. If you are hungry or a man, don't order the risotto. First of all - get a reservation. BoccaLupo is TINY. We visited Atlanta this past weekend for my birthday, and I picked BoccaLupo for my birthday dinner. We had a 7:45 reservation (for Saturday night), and we noticed that quite a few people tried to walk in and were told a table might be available around 9:15. So, if you want to eat at BoccaLupo, make that reservation! We started with some wine (they have some very good wines by the bottle or by the glass) and the gulf snapper ceviche (with citrus tapenade, coriander, and sweet potato chips). The ceviche was the only dish of the night that was a real disappointment. For $16, I expected at least a little more snapper - the dish was mostly citrus and chunks of olives (because the menu read tapenade, I was expecting the olives and citrus to be incorporated in a less clunky way - there were just pieces of citrus and pieces of olives, which made most bites too briney or too high in acid, with many bites without any fish at all). I wouldn't order this ceviche again. For our pastas, I chose their 20-yolk tagliatelle with wild mushrooms, Tuscan kale kimchi, and butter (which our waiter recommended when I was on the fence about which of three pasta dishes to order). I was worried that the flavors wouldn't mesh well (even though Yelp reviews of this dish I had read raved). But our waiter was right! This dish was unique and different and surprising and very delicious. The pasta was beautiful. I would definitely order this again. It was my favorite bite of the night. My husband chose the garganelli with smoked bacon, bronzed brussels sprouts, butternut, and sage. It was okay - good, but not great - and not as good as my tagliatelle (we were in agreement on this). We also got a couple of desserts. I LOVED their cream cheese panna cotta with marmellata and walnut and ginger snap cookie crumble (which they served with a candle for my birthday). It was light and simple and absolutely delicious (good panna cotta is one of my favorite desserts in the world). My husband LOVED their gelati and cookies (he chose salted caramel from the flavors they had available that night). While BoccaLupo wasn't quite the standout/perfect/mindblowing meal I was expected, I did like/love most of what we ate (with the ceviche and my husband's pasta being the low points of the meal). But on top of the food, the restaurant is intimate and romantic, and the service was very good. It was a very good dinner, just not the standout I was hoping it would be! read more

If you can find a reservation to Boca Lupo, snag it while you can! We randomly stumbled upon an available table for a Tuesday dinner and saw that it was booked for the next 3 weeks! Definitely ask your waitress/waiter if they have a tasting menu, it gives you a chance to try several dishes. We ended up ordering the tasting menu, an appetizer and an entree and it was the perfect amount of food for the two of us! Grouper Ceviche: great way to start the meal, light and acidic, balanced with a smoky leek flavor, and a crunchy hominy bites. Highly recommend this plate! Crab and artichoke risotto: since Bocca Lupo is well-known for their Italian dishes, we were extremely excited to try their modern take on risotto. We were disappointed with this dish since the risotto seemed to be over cooked, almost mushy, we didn't seem to get much crab, and the flavors blended together. Opt for a different dish! Tasting Menu: Bread with burrata: bread burrata and balsamic vinegar, you cannot go wrong with this mix! Love that they prepared the bread with a panini press with olive oil and had a great mix of texture, between the crunchy bread and the creamy burrata. Highly recommend! Spaghetti diavolo with shrimp: this has a kick to it! Definitely seemed like there was a heavy garlic taste to it, and the dish surprisingly reminded me of a spicy garlic sauce. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, not overdone. This dish was okay, left me wanting more. Duck with crispy rice: the duck had a great crispy skin, which added to the textures on the plate. The crispy rice reminded me of fried rice, and they even had their own version of a duck sauce on the side. Enjoyed the Asian twist of this dish! Crostata with blueberries and strawberries with gelato: you can never go wrong by ending dinner or the night with gelato! I could eat the gelato alone every night, it is that amazing! Definitely include all components into a single bite, the sweet and bitterness from the chocolate, acidity from the berries and the savory creaminess from the gelato made this a great way to end the meal. Overall, this meal was pretty great minus some hiccups with the food. We definitely came in with high expectations and left wanting to come back to try their tried and true dishes next time. Why 5 stars? Because the black squid ink spaghetti was worth the trip. --- --- --- On a recent flight to Atlanta, I spent more time than I care to admit trying to decide on where to eat when I'd land. Atlanta is a great food city and I wanted to make sure I took proper advantage of that. Of all the places I looked into, I couldn't get my mind off of the black spaghetti at BoccaLupo. I'd had squid ink spaghetti a couple years earlier for the first time and it was so amazing that I'd constantly been chasing that high for years since. As it turns out, I made a good decision, because I think this was closest I've come to that original, life-changing spaghetti that I had in Asheville, NC. I was fortunate enough to visit a bit early for dinner, before the peak crowds likely started arriving. Without a reservation, I was easily able to scoot up to the bar and enjoy a quick, solo dinner. I wouldn't recommend trying that at 7p on a Friday night though - after only one visit, I could tell that BoccaLupo is the type of place where seating is probably not easy to come by. Next we shared the Black Spaghetti and the Chicken Parm, these seem to be staples on the menu for a reason! Unfortunately, I called to make a reservation for a Friday night, but was later told by Jason that he "distinctly remembered" our conversation in which I asked for a reservation "tomorrow" - a Thursday. Jason is not only rude and pompous over the phone, but he also very rudely cancelled my Thursday reservation without me asking him to do so. I was going to keep it since I had little choice in the matter given that my desired evening (Friday) was booked. Btw, he's the end all, be all when it comes to management (that's what he told me), so good luck speaking to someone else unless it's the owner/chef! read more

Their food is delicious along with their wine and cocktail list. I'd rate them 5 stars if the place was bigger to accommodate more people. We made a last minute decision to come on a Saturday night so our option was a 1.5+ hour wait or the bar. I also wish they had more than 1 or 2 vegetarian options. Some in our group didn't have much to pick from. With that said, the food we did get was delicious. The chicken parm was perfectly cooked. The gnocchi was also delicious. The black ink pasta was also a nice change from regular pasta dishes. The portions were perfect. The dessert was really good. We got two to try. HAD TO GO AFTER ALL THE HYPE AND SOMEWHAT LET DOWN so if you know, boccalupo is a top Italian restaurant in Atlanta, making it a hard reservation to get. luckily, i landed a reservation and made my way out. surprisingly, the parking wasnt bad at all, which is uncommon for the inman park area. there's plenty of parking behind the building, as well as street parking which was fairly empty on a Wednesday night. the restaurant itself is cute - it somewhat reminds me of a house and isn't too fancy at all. the indoor area is nice, and it has an outdoor/indoor area with garage style windows (they were closed and had large fans blasting the space). moving on to the food... we started with the Marinated Mussels with Aioli, Cucumber Brodo & Drunken Bruschetta. for some reason, i thought they were going to be a more traditional dish with tons of mussels in a white wine sauce, but i should have paid attention to the description a little bit more. however, they were good - had a ton of herbs, nice clams, and a thick piece of bread soaking up the sauce. the pasta dishes we got (listed from favorite to least favorite): - Chicken liver Ravioli with Green Tomato Marmellata, Lady Peas & Herbs: this dish surprised me a lot. i feel like it's a risky dish because not a lot of people are big fans of chicken liver, but it was great. the chicken liver was nice, and the toppings paired perfectly with the ravioli. - Baked Eggplant Parm with Marinated Peppers, Mint & Mozzarella: an interesting take on eggplant parm. a little bit lighter than the traditional version and had tons of vegetables in it. the eggplant did seem to get lost with all of the other toppings but still a solid option. - Black Spaghetti with Hot Calabrese Sausage, Red Shrimp & Scallions: seemed to be a favorite among other yelpers, but not my favorite dish. i don't think I'm a big fan of the dish in general, but to me, this one wasn't the best. the calabrese sausage was a little too minced for me and was very dry. i know the dish isn't supposed to be saucy, but it needed some sort of pizzaz added to it. overall, i was kind of let down, especially with the amount of people hyping it up. all of the ingredients were very fresh, which you could taste, and i liked that the pasta was freshly made. additionally, the service wasn't the best either. i asked the waitress for some recommendations on dishes and she wasn't helpful at all. maybe i got the wrong things, but i wasn't too impressed after my initial visit. id definitely love to come back and try some other dishes and give it another shot! read more

Woooow!!! Now, this is some fantastic Italian food! We came here because my husband received a gift card from someone who said it was their favorite restaurant. We thought we have nothing to lose since our meal was paid for. We made reservations (which is a must!) and headed over. We were immediately greeted and seated and the vibe of the place is just a vibe, I don't know another way of putting this. Our service for the evening was wonderful as our waiter was very attentive and did an amazing job of explaining the meals to us. Service was definitely 10/10. Let's talk about the food and drinks, shall we? For my drink, I ordered the Italian Trading Co. and this is one of the best drinks I have ever had!! It was the right amount of sweetness, tartness, and spiciness, that I love in a drink. Now they don't give you much, so I ordered two but dang it was so good! Side note: I don't drink much so my range of great drinks is limited :-) For my meal, I order the Pappardelle Bolognese, which many reviewers suggested and my hubby got the Chicken Parmesan. My meal was so scrumptious and did not need any salt. For those who don't like salt or seasoning, this is definitely not the dish for you, because I did NOT have to add anything to this meal! My husband's meal was great also, which would be the perfect meal for someone who loves flavor but not as much saltiness. Wow oh wow I am so upset I don't live in Atlanta to come back to this restaurant everyday!!! Let's start with the service, we originally had reservations for 7pm but we were having issues with our Uber and getting there in a timely manner. We called the host and she was so patient and squeezed us in even though we were late which we were so appreciative of! Our server was also super friendly. Red snapper ceviche - fresh tasting, love the crispy hominy to switch up textures and I'm a sucker for pickled red onions 8/10 Pan roasted duck breast w sweet potato ravioli - easily my favorite dish of the night! The duck was so tender and savory which paired beautifully w the sweet potato ravioli! 10/10 Pappardelle Bolognese - you can really tell this is fresh pasta and it has the most perfect bite to it!
