I'm gonna start by saying the staff was amazing! I treated myself to a solo birthday dinner on my actual birthday. I put in the notes of my reservation that it was my birthday and everyone stopped by my table and greeted me with a warm happy birthday. That was a really nice touch. My waitress offered me a free glass of champagne for my birthday and I definitely wasn't gonna turn that down. I got the veal meatballs as my appetizer. I love that they were weren't heavy and dense. They were very light and delicious. I also chose the chopped salad, but I wanted it to come out with my entrée. The chopped salad was good. Had pepper notes to it. The only thing I would do next time is ask for it not to be green peas in it. Just because I'm not a fan. For my entrée I got the cannelloni. The lamb shoulder inside was so tender. It was very cheesy and delicious. It also had green peas in it, which I didn't pay attention to on the menu. I would also ask for there not to be green peas in the kennel only again that's just my taste. But that did not stop me from eating it all. I also had the blood orange margarita which was really good. This was my first time at this restaurant, but it definitely will not be the last. We celebrated my husband's birthday for dinner here with his parents. There's valet parking across the street at Wells Fargo for $3 with a validated ticket. Without validation, it's $20. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We did arrive here a bit early for our reservation but were seated right next to the open kitchen, so it felt quite crowded and cramped.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a very, very small restaurant and it was freezing where we sat because we were under the vents.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our server, Mary Catherine, was a treat and she took good care of us. She took our drink orders, though I didn't drink tonight. For appetizers, we started with the calamari and stuffed clams. They also offered complementary bread and olive oil basket that was served warm, yum! Our food orders came out pretty fast actually. The calamari was not your typical fried calamari - it was delicious and loved the mix of raw onions in it for that fresh bite. I'm not a fan of clams so I didn't try this, but heard it was just breading and can't really taste the clam taste. For my entree, I ordered the spaghetti pomodoro with meatballs. I had been dreaming about this since making the reservations and it did not disappoint. The pasta was cooked al dente and the sauce was wonderful. I did think the meatballs were a tad too salty for my taste and I'm glad I opted out of the freshly grated parm because I feel like that would have made everything saltier. Of course the first open opportunity I could, I decided to schedule my birthday dinner reservation here. If you're lucky, score free parking on the street. Otherwise, there is a paid public parking lot and I believe valet? We got lucky and found a spot a short walk away on the street. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside the restaurant is warm and intimate. We were seated at a table for 2 near the open kitchen, which ended up being a very busy foot traffic section. So not as intimate as I would have hoped for, but still fun to see the madness of the kitchen.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Of COURSE, I had to start with an espresso martini, and it was a solid one. Could have used a little more shaking to maintain that foam/head. Complimentary warm bread was a nice touch. The Caesar salad was delicious, adding the white anchovies is a MUST. The veal meatballs were a little heavy but filled our hungry tummies while waiting for our entrees. All I could think about was our pasta - the nero spaghetti and the tagliatelle bolognese. You can order an "appetizer" size for $5 less than the entree, which helped us with stomach space in trying more dishes. I did regret not getting a full order of the nero spaghetti because I couldn't stop eating it - the flavors of the seafood with the squid ink pasta was EVERYTHING. The tagliatelle bolognese was solid, although not as mind-blowing - the nero spaghetti was definitely a hard act to follow. The server brought us an order of complimentary fingerling potatoes since the kitchen had made an extra on accident - which was a nice touch, but the potatoes themselves were forgettable. And finally - dessert! We weren't expecting but would have loved something special for my birthday, since it was actually that evening, but unfortunately, it seemed like they had forgotten that I had included it in my reservation, so that was a bit disappointing. The olive oil cake with Meyer lemon curd, satsuma and gelato was delicious - the gelato was already melted by the time it came to our table, so it didn't take a picture perfect photo but still tasty all the same. I definitely missed out on the attentive service I would have hoped for on my birthday. Our server was nice though, but pretty sure the hostess did not communicate it to him that it was my birthday. This was our first time going to La Tavola. We showed up for their Monday night pasta special. I felt as if everyone from the host to the bartender to the servers were pushing their wine menu even though we expressed that we were not intending to drink at night. Our server was friendly but not very attentive. We often had to wait or ask another server to flag them down for things like water or utensil. We ordered a couple of dishes of pasta. I also ordered a half salad to go with my meal . The salad - while tasty- was overpriced for what I got. My friend enjoyed his carbonara, but said the pasta was overcooked. My rigatoni was really tasty but very watery. I was pretty disappointed by the fact that the sauce was just sliding off of the pasta. The pasta itself was overcooked and past al dente. Had the pasta been cooked better and the sauce been reduced more, I would have loved this dish. Overall, the food was tasty but not really worth another visit. read more

I'm starting to think that the Fifth restaurant group genuinely knows what they're doing. Great food, great service, and ever so slight comfort issues (at least for someone my age). The vibe of La Tavola is neighborhood bar meets trattoria. Many customers, especially those seated at the bar, appeared to be regulars. There was an atmosphere of conviviality aided, no doubt, by the fact that the tables are crammed in one on top of another. The noise level, surprisingly, is not excessive. The food is excellent and not overpriced by Atlanta standards. We started with a burrata app, a dish that can be something of a cliche and not my favorite in any case. The kitchen chose to use a mint pesto which made all the difference. The flavors were bright and fresh and the rough chopped pistachios added some needed texture. The mains were also quite good. The veal saltimbocca was not entirely traditional - no spinach and I'm not sure about the sage - but the sauce was rich and tasty and the veal was tender. The roasted potatoes worked well but were a little salty by the end. The seafood black pasta was also a winner although the clam shells didn't have any clams. The vegetarian in our party felt that the mushroom pasta was heavy although I feel that's a matter of personal perception. It didn't strike me as such but YMMV. We had a five-star experience at La Tavola! First, our server was extremely friendly and ensured we always had what we needed. She also clued us into the fact that you can get all of their entree pastas in appetizer size! This means we were able to try more pastas as well as enjoy an app and dessert. We ordered a bottle of Nero D'Avola, which was smooth and delicious. We got the meatballs as our appetizer, which were super tender and full of flavor. We split the rigatoni alla vodka, fettucine ai funghi, and tagliatelle bolognese. All were perfection. I loved the creaminess of the alla vodka, which had a kick of spice from the chili oil. I loved the herbiness and freshness of both the ai funghi with its sage and the bolognese with its rosemary. The tiramisu was the only dish that was just ok. I would much rather have espresso drenched ladyfingers than coffee liquor. But it was still good so I cannot complain. The waitress also surprised us with prosecco with a lemon rind twist to celebrate the fact that we had just closed on our first ever home. All in all - it was a perfect evening. read more

Very cute Italian spot in Virginia Highland! The indoor restaurant area is pretty small, but the patio is huge and so gorgeous!! There's plenty of street parking around as well as valet if you're too lazy to look around. The service inside was great and super fast too which was a huge plus since we went with a pretty big party. I had their cult classic tagliolini which is perfect if you're a mushroom fan! I definitely get why they have a huge following for the pasta alone lol. I also tried the focaccia and the veal meatballs, and thought that they were ok, but I think I make better versions of both Overall I can't recommend the tagliolini enough! I had a reservation for a party of three at 8:15. We arrived a few minutes early, but the place was packed, and our table wasn't ready. It took about 10 minutes before we were notified, and when we returned to the restaurant, the table was still being set, so we had to wait another 5 minutes. Once seated, though, the experience turned around quickly. Our waitress was phenomenal--extremely knowledgeable about the menu and gave some fantastic recommendations. We started with the Caesar salad, which was one of the best I've ever had, and the calamari with its delectable sauce. For my entrée, I had the succulent pork from their seasonal menu, while my friends enjoyed the squid ink pasta and the bolognese, both of which they loved. Since we were celebrating my birthday, we were treated to a rich mousse-like chocolate dessert and a glass of champagne for the table, which was a nice touch. We were not served the complimentary bread but saw the tables next to us being served so we had to specifically ask for that. Then we got then appetizer sized cacio e pepe and the spicy vodka pasta. one of the worst meals i have had in a long time. we arrived relatively early, 5:40, and out server was delightful. The restaurant was less than half full. Yet it took over an hour to be served our entrees. My saltambucca was luke shoe leather-tough and salty, practically inedible. the $14 Caesar salad was covered in breadcrumbs, vs croutons, and i found it quite unpleasant. the deserts were mediocre-my lemon sorbet tasted harsh and artificial. Best Italian I have had in Atlanta up to this point. The whole experience was excellent, starting with the view on the back balcony, to the service, and then the food. Everything we experienced here was awesome and we will definitely be back. We started our meal by splitting the Caesar Salad and the Misto di Mare, which is the perfect blend of calamari, octopus, gulf shrimp, friggitello (peppers), pickled onion, and sofrito aioli). The salad was crisp and fresh and the cheese was outstanding. The Misto di Mare was provided excellent flavor and was just enough to leave you wanting more. Highly recommend getting the Misto di Mare if you are a seafood fan! For our main dishes, we got the Gnocchi Cacio e Pepe and Tagliolini. The Gnocchi is a dish with braised rabbit, local goat cheese, asparagus, and black truffle. The dish is one of my favorite Italian dishes that I have eaten, ever. It is definitely on the heavier side in terms of a meal. I could not finish after the salad and Misto. I will be getting this dish each time I return as long as it is on the menu. Do not fear the rabbit! It is tender and has a great flavor to go along with the other ingredients. The Tagliolini, on the other hand, was a very light meal. It contains mushroom ragu, truffle oil, and pecorino romano. Highly recommend this dish as well, especially if you are a fan of mushrooms. The mushroom ragu is fantastic. The service is spot on our entire visit, from the greeting at the front, to the timeliness and attention we received our entire meal. We did make a reservation, which I highly recommend doing. My boyfriend and I came in with a 7:30pm reservation and were seated pretty quickly. The ambiance of this restaurant is very nice. Great jazz and soul music plays at a comfortable volume. The brick wall and light fixtures make for a trendy atmosphere. We dressed up a little, but most of the other patrons were pretty casual. When we got there, the restaurant was already almost completely filled up, with just a couple of tables open. Our server Kaylee was very friendly and welcoming. My boyfriend and I each ordered a glass of montepulciano, which was delicious. It was dry but light and fruity. For our appetizer, we went with our server's recommendation: the Burrata (Burrata cheese, apple mostarda, hazelnut, mint). It was great along with the complementary bread and olive oil (which we ordered a couple extra servings of due to it being so good but also because we waited over an hour for our entrees to arrive. Our server did her best, apologizing to us and checking back and forth between tables and the kitchen. Understandably, there were lots of orders placed around the same time, but it felt like we were waiting forever. Our dinner began at 7:30 and ended at nearly 9:30... quite a long time. For this reason, I sadly had to dock one star. Had we ordered dessert, it probably would've been a 2.5-3 hour dinner). For our entrees, we shared Nero Spaghetti (gulf shrimp, calabrian shrimp sausage, soffritto, basil) and the Tagliolini (mushroom ragu, truffle oil, pecorino romano). Both pasta dishes were exquisite. At the end of our meal, our server asked if we wanted to sign up for rewards. This is the quintessential neighborhood Italian spot. It's dark, moody, and extremely intimate (maybe 15 tables in the entire place, if that). We were lucky enough to snag a table for dinner without a reservation. This place was packed and based on convos with staff, it stays this way so I'd recommend a reservation just in case. Service was great, they still manage to make sure you're having a good dining experience even with the place filled back to back. The salumi board was good but on the smaller side, especially giving 4 meats but only 1 cheese and no real sides just some pickled veggies. I'd probably skip it next time. The veal meatballs were soft and well seasoned. I especially loved the polenta underneath. I wish the tagliolini had been seasoned better - it was a bit plain and definitely needed salt and acid. Quite a few people in this city tend to rave about this restaurant as "one of the best Italian restaurants in town" so, you know your girl had to go see what the hype was all about. When you enter the establishment, the main dining room is very quaint and the bar is very small. Since it was a nice day, we decided to sit outside on the patio. To eat, we ordered the Veal Meatballs as an appetizer, the Squid Ink Spaghetti and Tagliatelle Bolognese for entreés, and the Tiramisu for dessert. I also had the Basil Limonada cocktail to drink. The meatballs were ok, and though I didn't try the Squid Ink Spaghetti, my friend said it was good. I thought that the Tagliatelle Bolognese was alright and my cocktail tastes pretty basic. Our waitress was nice and seemed energetic whenever she stopped by our table so that was cool. Overall, this place was fairly average. It wasn't bad but I wasn't exactly blown away either. I know things come and go... but removing the Vegetarian favorite for over a decade from your meat-packed menu marks a sad moment in ViHi eatery history. Stopped by for an early Valentine's dinner on Sunday night. I would highly recommend making a reservation on OpenTable cause they were packed and there is not much space to wait inside. FOOD: Nero Spaghetti ($24) - This was the squid ink pasta but they served it with shrimp instead of calamari. The squid ink pasta was chewy (in a good way) and didn't taste briny. Unfortunately the dish as a whole was incredibly bland. The components individually were great so it was a shame it wasn't seasoned more. Tagliatelle Bolognese ($23) - This dish was almost more bland and just all around not good. It became decent when our server gave us Parmesan cheese to add so we had more flavor to work with. The sauce was more liquidy than I'm used to so maybe that's why it was more bland? SERVICE: The hostess had us wait 10-15 min for a table past our reservation time, but ended up offering an already open table after realizing the other table was not going to empty out fast enough. Our server, Katie, was great. She was super attentive and brought us extra plates, Parmesan, etc. without us even having to ask. Other servers were accommodating as well when we needed new silverware and water. VIBE: Note that the space is small and super compacted with all the tables being very close, people waiting in a tiny entrance, and servers trying to get everywhere. I would recommend going to the patio for a less hectic experience. OVERALL: Probably more of a 2.5, but service was great so 3 seems fitting. Everyone at the table agreed my entree was the best which was slightly concerning because everyone else ordered traditional Italian dishes : tagliatelle bolognese and tagliolini. I tried their dishes and saw why. Devoid of sauce and flavor it was a huge letdown. Very dry pasta unfortunately. Again if I'm just basing this review off of my chicken dish it was delicious but unfortunately the pasta dishes did not deliver during this visit. Went here the other night and had a simply delightful evening. The servers worked together and all of them were so engaging and fantastic. I had the mezcal based drink and it was soooo good. The server indicated it's one of their fall drinks and it is NICE! I ordered the mushroom pasta and added shrimp. I really enjoyed it. I added a little red pepper to spice things up a bit. I got the olives, hamachi crudo and taglioni. The olives were good but a little too salty. The hamachi was delicious and fresh. There was a slight citrusy flavor and some spice from the chili. Our waiter was really selling the mushroom pasta. I was hesitant because I'm not a huge fan of thinner pastas but the texture was great. There was a lot of mushroom so don't get it if you're not a fan. We sat outdoors and it was really nice. Heated and covered. read more

Had an amazing experience here. Walking around on a Monday evening and stopped in. I'd recommend getting a reservation as they fill up quickly and it's an intimate space. Service: impeccable from the start. Randy the manager was very informative and accommodating. We started at the bar and Lucas made amazing cocktails while explaining the menu and what pairs with what. When our table was ready we were handed off to our server Dakota who also was very informative and fun. Food: everything was delicious. We had the tagliatelle bolognese as an app. Went great with the bread they start you with. Rigatoni with veal meatballs and the main event of the night for me, Saltimbocca Alla Roma (Veal entree). For dessert the olive oil cake. Overall an amazing dining experience and I can't wait to return. read more

Had an amazing date night here at La Tavola. Our server Michael was friendly and explained the menu since it was our first time there. We started with the Ceaser Salad and the Burrata. We added on the anchovies to the salad and were glad that we did. The salad was fresh and satisfying. It slightly veered on being too salty but still good. The Burrata was great too, with a nice mix of surprising flavors like pistachio and strawberries. For the entrees, I got the Nero Spaghetti which was perfectly cooked and flavorful. Garlicky, buttery, with the slightest hint of spice. My husband got the Zuppa di Pesce and it was lovely as well, with plenty of seafood and two very large toasted pieces of bread for dipping. We wished we had room for dessert but we were stuffed, so we'll get some next time! This might be our new favorite Italian restaurant in the ATL! read more
