We dropped by after watching the Lunar New Year parade Satuday night. My local friend had made a reservation at 8:30 pm and we were promptly seated when we arrived. The restaurant was packed, which is usually a good sign. The calamari appetizer was good, but could be a little more crispier and the dip more flavorful. I had the Spaghetti Cippola which had a simple clean sauce with sausage pieces and onion. Very good. The other two dishes (Spaghettini Barrata and Penne Bolgnese) were also very good. The servers were definitely hustling today and very friendly. Only complaint is that the second dining room from the entrance is extremely loud, very noticeable when you are lead from the entrance dining room to the second one. This is likely due to the sound acoustics. If I come back here again, I would request the entrance dining room so that I don't have to shout to my dining guestings. Food and service were absolutely excellent. Had the octopus appetizer, spaghetti vongole with a wine pairing recommended by our server, and tiramisu. Everything was perfectly prepared and extremely delicious. The restaurant was cozy and had a wonderful atmosphere. Everyone I was with greatly enjoyed their meals as well! read more

A North Beach resident for 40+ years, I had yet to try this little corner restaurant. After 10 days at home recovering from a flu, eating toast and bone broth, I needed (1) sustenance and (2) to see people again, so off I went to get a bite to eat. Was surprised to see this restaurant was open at 4:45, walked into the place with only one party at a table and said "Hi - I'd like a table for one please" and was met with stares between a waiter and a bus boy. After conversing, the bus boy went back into the kitchen (I could see him) and talked with who-knows-who and came back out and said "Sorry, we only have bar seating". I was shocked and stated "But all these tables are empty and I only want a plate of ravioli. I'll be quick." (The "Bar" is a tiny corner thing.) He shrugged and said "they are all reserved" so I left and went next door to Sodini's (Go THERE!!) where I was greeted like an old friend, seated at a TABLE and served with smiles, laughter and hugs. Left Sodini's at 5:30 after a wonderful salad and plate of ravioli and walked past Bocconcino - still EMPTY - If you are a single, older woman, do NOT spend a dime at this place. There are so many wonderful local restaurants in North Beach (Sodini's being one) that are happy to have you & your $$$. Oh, and I'm a BIG tipper, too. Used to be in service myself. I was here last week for lunch with co-workers and unsure of what to expect. I am a vegan & was ready for a purely liquid lunch. Instead I was enthusiastically given three vegan-friendly options & they all sounded delicious. The owner and chef really know what they're doing! There was even an appetizer choice I could enjoy. My group shared two bruschettas: eggplant & tomato (both vegan). I am partial to North Beach so this beautiful spot was convenient, comfortable and clean with a really intimate and relaxing aesthetic. We were seated without a reservation which was nice. The service was ok. They forgot to give us bread and when they finally did after we asked for it, no olive oil. The music was loud so it was difficult to order. At times it was pumped up to high volume like a club. The food was hit or miss. Vongole was good and clams fresh. Octopus appetizer was a little mealy and bland. Presentation was a little messy. Overall a decent restaurant. I would give it another chance but not 5 stars. read more

Stumbled into this restaurant with a search on Yelp--and what a delight! There is indeed a parking lot across the street (not cheap on a weekend night but super convenient)--and we walked in hoping to get a table. I didn't know at the time that they make reservations on Opentable---But at the time, we were just silly family hoping for table. We arrived and --were disappointed. No tables available all night! But the owner/maitre d'hotel looked at our faces and then offered us what he said were--his "vaulted" tables--which--we might not like (there is the main dining room, then the dining room through the dividing wall--and then, tucked in the back, two tables under brick vaults---isolated from the restaurant). Actually, while not romantic in anyway, for a family that wanted to talk to each other, they were perfect! We could hear each other perfectly because we were buffered from the noise and the vault bounced the sound down back to us! So happy. The food was wonderful; amazing; delicious. Bolognese, tortelli, clams in a white wine sauce on linguine; unusual wines that were crisp and well matched in acid to the dishes---and delightful, friendly service. We were so happy we went out to try Bocconcino (in Italian: Tidbit!)--and look forward to our next visit. So happy. read more

Was walking around with a friend and they have room early in the night. We were seated in 10 seconds. Wine by the glass is limited to a few choices. Wine was so so. The bread they give you with the olive oil was very dry and will break your teeth, it is also not fresh. so 1/5 for that. The octopus and calamari was good. My friend has Risotto and I had the recommendation which was Lamb Ragu, the Lamb Ragu was good, I make a much better one but I wasn't cooking, so good enough. The dessert wine was $12 a glass, so I skipped on that. In short. If you are in North Beach and you want to go out for a basic meal that will be fancy but nothing spectacular, the place is great. The BEST Italian food I've ever had, period. From the service, to the cook, to the food, and everything in between, amazing. The ambiance is chill. The food itself was so flavorful and tasty. We weren't going to get dessert but decided to try their tiramisu, and O.M.G. let me tell you! The tiramisu was so mouth watering! I can't wait to visit SF again just for this place (#bigback). My husband and I saw an Instagram reel about Sotto Mare and made our way to get a table. The wait as 45 minutes for two people, so we walked the street in search of a place to grab a drink. We happened across this delightful little Italian restaurant and were recommended a glass of Sangiovese. It was absolutely fantastic. Bold and smooth. The owner told us all about how the restaurant had only been open for a few months. I can honestly say that I felt like we were in a movie with the way he and his staff were so friendly. He would open the door after a table walked out and thank them for coming with a big "arrivederci!" Food was very flavorful. I had the fish special of the day over polenta and my friend from Quebec had the scallop risotto--amazing. Desert was delightful, chocolate marscopone. The only thing that I felt was a negative was the front of house host. The poor guy was freezing in the cold with no jacket. As soon as we were greeted everything felt authentic Italian to its core: the service, the food, the decor and the vibe. It was all perfect We ordered the calamari, both ravioli dishes (pesto and seafood with the squid ink ravioli) the tagliotti (I think I spelled it right?). All of them blew our minds with flavor, texture and freshness. We even used the super fresh bread (they continuously served free of charge throughout the meal) to dip in the pool of goodness that was the sauces in our dishes. Not to pat ourselves on the backs or anything but this was a great decision! We wrapped up the meal with tiramisu. I think we are a bit programmed to expect it to come out with its signature perfectly square shape but its imperfection is where its perfection existed. This place had its priorities right because yes it didn't please this expectation but it made up in everything Else. Every single individual flavor was so individually unique yet so well balanced that we could not eat enough of it even though we were already extremely full. It was like drinking the perfect cup of coffee while simultaneously dipping in a delectable wafer cookie and finishing it off by washing it all down with a spoon of the best tasting cream you've ever had in your life. Honestly I saw one review (while I will say all of the others said 5 stars) that said the food was bland. This is the best Italian/Sicilian food I've had in the six years that I have lived in California. I grew up in the North End of Boston and was spoiled with good food in restaurants and my own home my whole life. San Francisco offers great options but this is honestly the best. I felt like I was eating food that my grandmother made growing up. They are so personable here and every dish is made with love. When our waiter Rosario spoke with us and realized that my mother and I are Sicilian, he asked the kitchen to hand make her sausages and pesto that went with her pasta dish.
