Staff was extremely helpful in explaining the difference ingredients and cuts of meat on the pizzas, which they referred to as pinsa, which is a flatbread style pizza. The crust was light and airy offering a great backdrop for the toppings. Our group ordered four different pinsas, each with a unique flavor. My favorite was the pesto with pine nuts. We parked up the street on Stevenson this past weekend, where the signs only indicated restrictions Monday thru Friday. We were seated right away with a reservation. The restaurant setting has some vintage charm, with old phones, record players, and other items decorating the space. And they've made some creative choices such as random sewing tables used for dining, adding a quirky touch fitting for the theme of the eatery. The old rickety chairs, on the other hand, do not add anything positive to the space. Some may call it rustic, but it's more cheap and dirty-looking than quaint, not to mention any furniture with wobbly legs is not pleasant to use for a dining experience. Luckily, the service was great. Staff was friendly and attentive to our needs during our visit. They don't serve cocktails here as of August 2026, and only offer a short list of non-alcoholic drinks (no iced tea), so we just got diet soda -- sugar free Italian cola to be exact. For food, we ordered a couple appetizers to start, the marinated vegetables and porchetta. Both items were a good size but lacking in flavor. The sundried tomatoes were my fave, mainly because it could actually be tasted. In fact, it seems they go light on the flavor with everything here. We got a maranella pinsa, and the spicy pork sausage didn't seem to have any spice at all. And the broccolini pieces were so large and stringy, it was hard to eat. I like most pizzas wherever I go, but besides the fresh tasting pillowy crust, I just wasn't a fan of the pinsa at Montesacro SOMA. Tried this place on a whim based on EaterSF's "Top Pizzas List" and the lure of something different in the form of a Roman-style pinsa (not a misspelling). Well, we were not disappointed. Worth a visit. First, the Pinsa - very good. Nice selection of veg and non-veg options. Flavors were great. The crusts were fluffy and light. Service was spot on, friendly and fast. Ambiance in the restaurant is fun. A bit funky rustic - feels just like your neighborhood drop-in restaurant...not fussy just comfortable with good food. I love the lightness of Montesacro's pinsa, a Roman-era pizza with a different flour that actually includes soy, wheat and rice. It's only like pizza in terms of the topping because this crust is so crispy and light. Everything I've had here has been very good. I rely on the really cool waitress there to make recommendations. Last night, the beet salad was a great suggestion for a starter. She also hooked me up with the right red wine for our order, the Etna Rosa, a flavorful but light Sicilian. The Tor Marancia pinsa with soppressata was delicious and the right size to share for two. The owner, Gianluca, is a highly-respected musician who has curated a whimsical decor filled with curiosities and antiques in every corner, including the bathroom. I can see why the number of locations is multiplying with the food and the vibes being so universal. Good for lunch or a pre-show meal if you're going to the Golden Gate Theater. The neighborhood is a little gritty, but I often get lucky and find parking at the other end of the block by 7th street. It's not all bad. Tried out this place for the first time while meeting up with a group. Getting here was a breeze up until I got to Stevenson St., as a few Waymo cars were stalled at the light in front of me and made me twenty min late to dinner! It would be wise to avoid this route for this reason. Once you finally make it inside, the place is just lovely! The service is great and the food is spectacular! We were waited on by the beautiful Susanna and she brought out our food in a prompt and timely manner. I got the blood orange sparkling and it was very thirst-quenching. As a vegetarian, I also got the torpignattara pinsa, which had mashed potatoes, basil pesto, roasted almonds, and cheese. I think my favorite part was the crust, so good! They make it in a brick oven, so it's just perfect. The portion was pretty huge for an individual size and two people can easily share if you're not too hungry. We enjoyed both a sausage broccolini pizza (5/5 stars, I especially enjoyed the cold cheese) and a red sauce pizza with spicy sausage (5/5 stars for my partner, just 4.5/5 stars for myself). Stopped in on a Saturday evening before going to a show at the warfield. I knew it might be hard at 6pm on a Saturday to eat somewhere good without a reservation, but we thought we'd test it out. We waited a few minutes but then they were able to seat us at the bar. The environment is cozy and rustic, and the service was friendly. My partner and I each got a glass of wine which were excellent--I got a Pet Nat and my partner got a Pinot Grigio. We weren't sure of portion sizes so we got an appetizer and a pinsa to share between us, but it was a little too much food (we were heading to a performance so we did not want leftovers). The food was fresh and flavorful and felt well-made. Our cauliflower dish had really great toppings, but the cauliflower itself kind of bland. The dish was supposed to be warm, but it landed at our table kind of room temp-cold. We didn't mind too much, but wished the cauliflower itself had been a little better. Our topignatarra pinsa had a wonderful crunchy crust that we loved, the cheese was gooey, the pesto was herby, and it would have been absolutely perfect if there had been more salt on it. I feel a little ridiculous saying that because usually I'm complaining about food being too salty, but this definitely needed some. We added some of the topping from the cauliflower dish to give it a little something extra. OMG!!! I just had the MOST incredible meal here. Its so cute and very authentic inside. We had reservations here before our show at the Golden Gate Theater. We ordered a salad and pizza to share. The salad was a shaved Brussel sprouts and kale with pumpkin seeds and lots of fresh Parmigian cheese. This was the best salad I've had. Now on to the pinsa. It had mozzarella cheese, broccolini, spicy chicken sausage, and lots of fresh creamy stracciatella. And damn it was good. It has Tony's beat in my book. I could have eaten it all by myself. I stopped by Montesacro SoMa with a friend for a weekend dinner after receiving multiple recommendations for this spot from several coworkers / friends. I got there a few minutes early, so I was immediately struck by how cozy and intimate the store felt; the staff seemed relaxed but on top of their game, and I loved that you could somewhat (but not quite...to preserve the mystery of it all) see the kitchen work their magic with a partially visible container of prepared dough, slightly exposed assembly counter. I love the walls of wine bottles, random chandeliers, and deli counter -- it genuinely felt like I was back in Rome. For food, we started with the Sottoli, a plate of beautifully EVOO-marinated vegetables (red bell peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, and eggplant), topped with a bit of chili and parsley. I loved the simplicity of this antipasti; the veggies were super flavorful and delicious. It's a great vegetarian or gluten-free choice, but you can also get an order of their bread if you'd like to bulk up this appetizer. The veggies were delicious on their own, but also went wonderfully with the main star of the show, the pizza. We got their margherita just so we could compare this classic vs. other pizza joints, and they certainly did not disappoint. The tomato sauce was flavorful, with just the right mix of herbaceous, savory, acidic, and sweet, and the pizza was topped with a generous portion of melty mozzarella and basil. I love that they fully lean into the Roman-ness of their restaurant by serving the more ovular pinsa, with a slightly thicker, chewier crust and highlighting local Roman ingredients. Now that I've confirmed their margherita pizza (or, rather, pinsa) is 10/10, I can't wait to go back and try their other options! read more

On paper, the dishes at Montesacro are my platonic ideal of a meal. Cauliflower! Kale! Pecorino! Sadly, the execution falls somewhat short of the menu's promise. While nothing was bad, everything was middling compared to similar dishes at similar Cal-Ital restaurants. The Cavolo Nero Salad (Kale with Brussels Sprouts) was very tough, with the kale inadequately massaged or coated with dressing. While the Brussels weren't intended to be roasted, doing so would work wonders for the salad's consistency. Naturally, the Pecorino Romano does what a good cheese does: elevate everything. Similarly, the Cavolfiori (Cauliflower Salad) didn't deliver with the main ingredients, but rather leaned heavily on saltiness from the olives and capers. So while neither dish was an outright disappointment, neither was a home run that would merit an imminent return. Also, while I don't blame the location on the restaurant, the food didn't justify the crosstown trek and hunt for parking. The interior, however, is exceptionally charming with mood to spare, a welcome reprieve from the dicey scene immediately outside the front door. Located in a pretty and sketchy alleyway, this place offers some interesting pinsas. They're airier and cheesier compared to a typical new york pizza. I started with their cauliflower appetizer. I loved the extra crunch that the breadcrumbs added to the dish. As for the pinsa, I got the Casal Bertone which has guanciale and honey. I also added buratta. It came out with a pool of rendered fat from the guanciale. Very decadent. I do wish I could taste the honey and adding the buratta wasn't really worth it. But wow, when it came to dessert, they really knocked it out of the park. The panna cotta was unlike any I've tried before. Fun atmosphere. Love all the antiques. Most of the chairs are very uncomfortable to sit in though. Their metal chairs feel like torture devices. Good service. Food is solid but doesn't stand out. They use good quality ingredients. But flavors are at best muted, at worst bland. The pizza cheese and sauce while good in quality, has very little flavor. I don't know if they need more seasoning, salt, or something else but something is missing. Overall pretty solid without being good. Okay for a quick lunch. What an absolute gem-in-the-wall. Located somewhat in an alleyway that is off the main street (which by the way, the main street did feel sketchy), and upon entering you feel immersed in a rustic restaurant that gives off huge authenticity vibes. We were served by someone who was so knowledgeable of the food, was able to articulate how they were special, and provided such enthusiasm, it was refreshing. We decided to get 2 pizzas for 2 people, and although it was said they are somewhat personal-sized, they were slightly larger (so expect extras!). We chose the white pizza MARANELLA and a red called TORMARANCIA and they were DELICIOUS! Absolutely some of the best pizzas I've ever had. The crust was light, crispy, and yet filling. The lovely server walked in on me rereading and discussing my previous review and discouraging the table from ordering the cauliflower salad which was cold last time. He was offended and scolded us to try it again and that it was warm this time around. And it was. And it was lovely. As was the kale salad. Scrumptious and perfectly balanced with citrus. And my favorite is still the excellent ostia. The bottarga just elevates the dish so much. Salty umami packed. Came here on Friday at 6pm with a party of 5, we made reservations beforehand. Our order: cavolfiori (warm cauliflower salad), cavolo nero (shaved brussel sprouts and kale), pane e olio (house bread that comes with olive oil). We also got 3 pizzas total, the margherita, the casalbertone (it has guanciale and chestnut honey), as well as the ponte mammolo (prosciutto sandwich looking pizza). Total cost was about $30 per person for all 5 of us after the 20% gratuity that is automatically included. Pros: - delicious pizza - my favorite was the casalbertone, the chestnut honey was such a unique taste but wasn't "too much." It was definitely the crowd favorite. I was also a fan of the cauliflower salad, but it's definitely got a spicy kick to it. - The service was really polite and kind, and I do appreciate that the menu is not too large so it's easy to make choices. - The interior is very clean and cute vibes, extremely different from the market street chaos outside haha. It's definitely a hidden gem. - Great location to eat at before specific events in the area, like if you're about to go see a musical at orpheum or if you're near Bill Graham for a concert. - Very fast service when we went on Friday night. - I feel like it was perfect for our party of 5, I wouldn't come with more than 6 people because most of the tables inside accommodate 2-4 people at best. - Portions are not tiny, but also not huge pizzas from regular pizza places.
