Really nice neighborhood sports bar. The beers are reasonably priced (~$5-6 each) and the cocktails are pretty inventive. I like the El Jefe, a twist on a rye and ginger ale. Also the food is awesome. The ropa vieja empanada and the spicy garlic shrimp are favorites. Sports-wise, they have 4 main TVs at the bar, are always open to tuning them to what folks want to watch, and each booth also has its own TV that can be tuned to whatever desired game. Solid spot to check out. It was my first time here last night. We had chipotle chicken tacos, nachos, chicken skewers and veggie empanadas. The nachos were the best thing. I didn't like the chicken. Instead of being smoky or spicy, it was saucy, tomato like. I didn't care for it at all. I had a drink and it was delicious. It had avocado in it. March Madness + individual TVs + happy hour until 7 PM + wonderful tapas-style dishes = recipe for a great evening. Bodega 88 is definitely a neighborhood spot; I think that out of every 10 patrons, at least 7 of them knew the owner or one of the servers/bartenders. And there were hugs and cheek kisses all around, you'd think you walked into someone's home and not bar. Don't get me wrong, it was such a fun experience and I loved the vibe. But if you're more of the "leave me alone so I can drink in peace" and/or "drink in my bubble", this isn't the place. As for the food, the tacos are where it's at. For the price ($6 for 2) and size (almost the size of my hand), they are a steal and the flavors are so fresh. We ordered the salsa verde shrimp and pernil-- both were fantastic. I'd recommend those any day. We also ordered the nachos (which were good too but those tacos...) and the empanadas (which, sadly, were very underwhelming). One star is taken away for the drinks. I love cocktails and enjoy a good beer from time to time. At Bodega 88, I started with one (cocktails- mojito and caipirinha) and had to move to the other (Liquid Gold draft). The cocktails were really sweet and overpowered any of the other flavors. However, the beer was nice and light. Nothing special but never had it before, so glad I got to try it. This place is right near my apt on the UWS, and I'm so glad it opened up! I've been trying to find great mexican food nearby, and this place hits the spot. The servings are priced and portioned like spanish tapas, and everything that I ordered was fresh and tasty. I would especially recommend the tacos--they are small, but come with a lot of filling and have a great balance of flavors. The drinks are very tasty and reasonably priced, especially if you come for the happy hour. It is definitely a sports bar, but with a cool, hip sort of feel (recycled cardboard light fixtures, comfy booths). My only complaint is that the amount of TVs is kind of intense... I went for dinner with a friend, and the tv that was blaring in our booth was pretty distracting. Overall--love this place, and will be back often read more
