Good, solid, southern down-home cookin. Everytime I'm down seeing family, this is one of the first places we go. I'm a slave to the fried flounder, slaw, and fries. And the Hushpuppies!! I get an extra order of those things! Sweet tea compliments it all. I leave this place gorged and about to bust everytime. Only drawback, which is actually a good thing, is that this place can get crowded and seating can be tight. That is probably a testament to how good the place is. We were looking for a quick snack while taking in the sights around the area. Bought a box of fries and 1/4 lb of fried shrimp to take out. The order was filled promptly and both were very hot and tasty. The slice of sweet potato pie was also very good. The prices were reasonable and the service was efficient and friendly. When every restaurant was packed on Emerald Isle, we headed toward Swansboro in search of lunch. We spotted this little spot and decided to give it a try. So happy we did! It's a small, order-at-the counter place with absolutely delicious home-style dishes. My husband and I shared a combo plate of fried chicken/shrimp and our daughter had a bbq sandwich. It was all perfect, including our sides...fried okra, collards, green beans and cuke salad. The mac n cheese was nothing special, but everything else was delicious. Best hush puppies ever. I'll have to say that visiting this unassuming place in the off season didn't raise my hopes for dining excellence too high, but I was really in the mood for some fried seafood. My expectations were reinforced by our being the only car in the parking lot half an hour after opening time. Styrofoam plates, plastic cutlery, and lemon out of little packets all kept driving my expectations lower - until I tasted the food. Easily the best Brunswick Stew I've ever had. Spot on, excellent fried okra, hush puppies, and collards accompanied perfectly executed fresh fried flounder and crab cakes that had a golden crunchy exterior that revealed crabby delights that had little filler. It was an awesome experience punctuated by the juxtaposition of religious music on the stereo while a game show played on the television...utterly fantastic. read more

Southern style BBQ is a favorite with the locals as is their hushpuppies, collards, clam strips and mac and cheese. Good southern food! Slightly pricey for the type of food though, expect to spend $10 to $15 bucks for lunch. I find it odd that a place makes you stand in line, get your own food when your number is called, fill and refill your own drinks, and clean up your own plate up has a tip jar though LOL! Good flavored chopped barbecue. Plenty of sides to choose from and excellent fried chicken. The hush puppies are sweet. They have a relatively unusual mustard-laced coleslaw that is very good. We're local and our family has been coming here for decades. We love this place. Everything tastes good. I'm only sad about two things: 1) I was disappointed when they redecorated several years ago. I liked the old-fashioned look better. 2) They don't have country fried steak anymore. Why? That was so good with mashed potatoes. (They served it with rice, but I always subbed out mashed potatoes.) There was zero atmosphere to speak of but the staff was friendly and helpful, the sweet tea was delicious, and the hush puppies were some of the best I have ever eaten. The Mac and cheese was good. I didn't think the shrimp would be so small but they were still good - not over cooked. The seasoned french fries had that yummy twice fried crunch on the outside but still soft on the inside - I love that. My husband got fried clams - we didn't think they were all that great - he ended up mostly eating his potato salad and Mac and cheese. I'm not sure if we'd make a trip to eat here again but if we do I think we'll try the bbq instead of the seafood. read more

I love this place. Indeed, it is where the locals eat. The fried shrimps are small but sweet and crisp. On Mon through Thurs they have special BOGO deals, so quite the bargain. For example, we had two shrimp and BBQ combos with 2 sides each for under $10. No atmosphere to speak of, but when you are in need of southern cooking, this definitely hits the spot! read more
