The service is friendly and the bagels are basic. Every time I go, they are missing something that I want. Tuesday, they didn't have butter. They also don't have strawberry cream cheese anymore. Yet, they tried to improvise by mixing cream cheese and strawberry jam. Yuck! I'll try out some other bagel spots nearby because this wasn't it. read more

To start, my order was messed up. I ordered basically a classic without capers and what I got was a classic without red onions (with capers). As soon as I got home and opened the bagel and saw it had capers on it, I called the restaurant and they were very sorry and offered a refund. Since I live relatively close I just asked if they could remake it for me. I just picked it up and started eating on it and wow, this bagel is incredible. Not worth the $15.50 I paid for it but it was a pretty good bagel, a treat. I don't know what to do with this bagel with capers on it, maybe I can give it to a family member when they get home? I really don't want to throw it away but I won't eat it because I hate capers. Still a nice place to go to, just check your order when you get it. Giving 4 stars because it is overpriced and because I had to drive back. read more

I didn't realize that this Boichik location closed at 1 pm, but fortunately I was allowed to order when I came running in at 12:58 pm (after experiencing typical Bay Area traffic). It's great that they offer a non-dairy cream cheese alternative and atypical garnishes, such as daikon sprouts. I was very pleased with my bagel sandwich and took home some regular and pumpernickel bagels for a midnight snack. I might return for one of their cute t-shirts. read more

as a life long Berkeley resident, it's incredibly disappointing and frankly disgusting to see a business which opened in West Berkeley maybe a year ago so aggressively push for the displacement of unhoused people who have lived in the neighborhood for years (as another reviewer describes). The owner responding that the neighborhood isn't safe... ok. why did you move here then? The solution to our housing crisis is not to continue criminalizing and violently removing the people living on the streets. This is my second visit to a purported "New York Style" whatever in the East Bay over the past month, and this was definitely better than the last one, but... First, the bagels are very good. Proper. But somehow, even with sky-high commercial real estate, there's not a bagel shop in NYC who would dare charge anywhere near these prices and expect to stay open. Wow. I spent almost $30 on 9 frozen bialys. So, there's that. I had the "Mensch", which featured whitefish, cucumber, and tomato. Whitefish should not leak. Whitefish shouldn't be liquid. It shouldn't be prepared as fancy canned tuna. Not in New York, certainly. I couldn't say if it was good whitefish or bad, because I couldn't taste it, really. I saw my friend's cream cheese leaking everywhere as well, which, I don't even know how that's possible. Also ridiculously expensive. The most authentic thing on the bagel was the tomato, because New York tomatoes are godawful, as this one was. So, all in all, it was pleasant enough, and it's just bagels, but if the stated intent is to recreate a specific experience, they fall well short. Take out a loan, pick up a bag of Boichicks, and schmeer them yourself at home. read more

Not impressed. I have been looking for a good bagel since I moved here from NYC. This tastes like a grocery store bagel. It is dense and not big and fluffy like a New York bagel. 2 stars for the good cream cheese. That was the best part! Also what kind of NYC bagel shop doesn't have bacon egg and cheese?!? It was also barely toasted which would be ok if it were warm like you can get at H&H in NYC. I didn't even finish my second half. The cream cheese was good. The tomato was good. The oj was good. But I hate to say it - because I used to love their bagels in Elmwood - the bagel was terrible. A wonderful and flavorful chewiness has been replaced by a tasteless and empty doughiness. Is it the fault of the big, bad machine behind the plate glass window? I have no issue with their bagels. They are very good. However, the service here is poor. I ordered a toasted bagel via the app. When I got there, the person behind the counter couldn't find the order. When they finally found it, the bagel wasn't toasted. The order slip clearly reflected that it was supposed to be toasted. How hard is it to read an order?
