I have dined here twice of dinner. Top notch food, impeccable service, amazing cocktails, people who really care about food and your dining experience in a very unique setting. Yes, the Boiler Room is actually in an old boiler room in the basement of a building in the Old Market. You can sit on the main level and look down onto the bar and kitchen, where food and drink warriors are fighting the good fight to prepare you that which your mouth needs. Being one of the closest restaurants to my geographic location, I felt my familiarity was necessary. The venue is a really cool concept and a good use of space that makes for a nice ambiance. While the prices are generally a bit higher than typical Omaha fare, this place falls into a small niche within pricier dining experiences. At some establishments you pay a premium for the location. At others you pay a premium for the name, notoriety, and status, "Oh we ate at the [insert well known place here]". These places generally offer a very expensive menu that creates a perception of amazing food. If it's that expensive, it must be good. However, that's rarely the case. You're just dead-set on telling yourself it's amazing since you just spent $60 on a steak you could have picked up at Costco for $7. Luckily, in my view, the food here is the entire justification for their prices. While on the interior the venue is cool, overall the location kinda sucks. They have no status (yet). If their food sucked, they would have been out of business after the first month. This seems to be one of those rare places where culinary expertise reigns. Everything else comes second. The entrees are individually engineered rather than manufactured. The drinks are perfected rather than mixed. The staff seemed genuinely concerned about the dining and drinking experience. If I had a lot of money I'd love to spend some serious time at their bar and exploring their amazingly extensive wine selection. I give them four stars. The food was definitely worth five but I have to adjust for perceptions possibly influenced by prices and venue. read more

My husband and I went here last weekend for my birthday dinner. It was kind of spur of the moment, which was evident by our late (9pm) reservation. Parking is kind of a bear in that part of the OM, so plan accordingly. The facility itself is fascinating with original, exposed brick work and bizarre artwork. The dining area looks down on the bar/kitchen area below. Our waitress was exceptionally helpful, assisting us with deciphering the fancy words and making awesome recommendations. To start, we ended up only gettting a glass of wine, which I think disappointed our waitress (the wine/liquor menu is at least 20 pages long). We also ended up getting the charcutterie plate as our appetizer, a delicious selection of salamis, sausages, pate, home-made mustard, and home-made pickles. The complimentary bread served before dinner is also exceptional: very crusty with a soft interior. For the main course, I ended up getting grilled mackerel served on a portion of polenta with grilled tomatoes and calamari. Yum! My husband got the steak served on a spinach puree. Even though the portions were small, we were actually full at the end of dinner. The after-dinner course is a mixture of cheese platters and usually one or two desserts. Unfortunately, we did not sample either--hopefully next time. Though a little bit pricier than our average fare, the bill overall is reasonable. Granted, the idea of the restaurant is eat a multi-course meal, but each course is well worth the quoted price! Things I hope to see in the future: 1) Validated parking 2) Different chairs (I can't even begin to explain how strange they were-- you feel like you might be able to fold in half and slide out of the back). 3) One (maybe two?) vegetarian options (though the menu changes very frequently) read more

EXPLORE this place! Grew up in Omaha, gravitated to the east coast 'way back. Omaha was always a tough place for a restaurant to make it - food is their life in the Midwest, fer crying' out loud. I've read the reviews here, and my belief is a lot of local folk don't rate Boiler Room where it deserves because most meals are majorly inexpensive in the Big O (and darn good). This is better than darn good, dadgummit. Compared to where the joi polloi coast around in salt air eating top choice meals, this place is a bargain given the incredible quality and flavor you get. This is a different experience than to what you are accustomed. Take a chance and get over your tired steakhouse habits. Boiler Room is truly world class. Local (great) food hand-selected from the farm - seriously - by the same people who prepare it for you (and I'll tell you it is apparent in the taste that they lay their hearts and reputations out for you), transforming select elements into dishes you would pay treble for in "select" big city restaurants. Their charcuterie alone will bring me back next time I get back into God's country. I wanted to explore the cocktails more, but time and schedule did not permit. My drinks were an "AHA!" experience. Boiler Room has a fresh, locally sourced menu that rotates frequently and a wine menu so extensive it's like a short novel. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional from beginning to end, including coat check and parking permits (make sure to pick one up for parking right in front). The wine service is exquisite and caters to all types of customers, no matter what their knowledge of wine might be. The wine is bought, and often served, by a certified sommelier who is more than happy to talk about their purchasing process and flavor match with the available menu. The menu changes perhaps once a week so be sure to check ahead of time for the best experience. The lamb was mouth-wateringly good and the appetizers were unique and well made. The cheese selection is also on rotation and matches well with the charcuterie board. Could not recommend this place more! read more

While in Omaha, me and three coworkers went out looking for the infamous Omaha steak experience. We were wandering around Omaha's Old Market District (way cool on its own merit!) looking for a place we read about. We stopped to ask a bike cop for directions and he told us to skip the place we were looking for and head to The Boiler Room. So that's what we did; we started walking in the direction he pointed. As we were about to turn a corner, he rolls past and says its one more block. As we turn the proper corner, he's riding in circles outside the place, pointing to the door. It was too funny to think you'd need a police escort to a restaurant in Omaha! The Boiler Room is, appropriately enough, in the old boiler room of a former burlap bag factory (most of the Old Market is renovated factories and warehouses). Very cool space, like something you'd see in NYC: exposed brick, sleek furniture, pretty waiters, great music (at just he right volume). Our waiter came to take drink orders as we were looking over the menu. There was lots of great stuff, but no steak. The waiter picked up on my quandary. Two of us really wanted steak and asked him where to go to get one. He started to mention a place or two and then said to sit tight while he went to talk to the chef. Moments later he came back with good news: there was a couple of steaks available! The Boiler Room tries to only use products from within 30 miles of the kitchen which means the menu can change several times in a night as things run out. Evidently steak had been on the menu the previous night but there weren't enough to put on the menu the night we were there. So, now to the meal... After more drinks arrived, the waiter came up and said the chef was sending some pre-appetizers: bacon-wrapped scallops and house-made chorizo! Yummy! After teasing the waiter about the scallops (you're not going to find scallops 300 miles, much less 30 miles, from Omaha!) he brought a salad of field greens, roasted hazelnuts, and a poached egg in a vinaigrette. Quite tasty. I wasn't sure what to expect for the main course since it wasn't even on the menu but knew it would be delicious if the first two items were any indication. The flank steak arrived on a bed of polenta with braised leeks. Everything was cooked perfectly. I finished the meal with a great bourbon!! My hat's off to the chef and staff of The Boiler Room. Fantastic! I don't always have the budget to go out but I felt like I got my money's worth at the Boiler Room! I brought some friends here come back to visit Omaha after years of living on the East coast and we were all impressed. The atmosphere was great, the service was well educated on their product and wine selection and the food was excellent. We each got something different. I got the skirt steak, my friends got the ravioli and the sea food dish and we shared a bottle of wine. The prices were comparable to the level of service and quality of food we received and we all left happy. read more

It makes me happy to eat at a place to stands up for itself and their menu. This visit we had a meat and cheese board, a pasta appetizer, and a blood sausage type dish. For my entree, I had the waygu steak. So delicious. They also know how to make cocktails the right way. I always order a Pimm's Cup and too many places cheat and use ginger beer (which is not correct at all and you can taste the difference). If I can put a restaurant in a hip black suit and dress it with a glass of scotch, this place would be it. The ambiance is definitely something worth remembering. The open layout where the majority of the dining is above and the bar/kitchen area is below surrounded by old brick walls and oversized posters that you can't keep your eye off of. The food is complicated in a sense where it is obvious the chefs took their time to coax out the flavors from every ingredient for every dish. On rare occasions, the dishes can be a hit and miss (sweet with a green bitter after note does NOT go well together) and there is a whole lot of braising, broiling and pureeing. It's great and all, but for those who'd like some bright veggies to accompany that rich and fatty portk shoulder entrée, it's not gonna happen. Oh, and their cocktails are deliciously stiff. Delicious food. The atmosphere is a bit industrial and trendy, but it works. The service is extremely attentive and friendly. The menu changes daily so there is no point in recommending a dish, but our steaks were excellent. The wine list is more of a wine book, which is either a plus is you are a wine nerd or a turn-off if you aren't. Fortunately the servers are well versed in their selection and can make a good recommendation. Cost is approx $100 per guest if you assume a ~$100 bottle of wine. This has got to be one of the best restaurants in Omaha - if not between Chicago and Aspen (wow, that's snotty). I was expecting a (hopefully) charming attempt at upscale steak house and it turned out to be a real foodie experience. The decor is charming and the staff was stereotypically midwest friendly but also very competent with the menu and the wine list. The signature retro-cocktails were well executed and the food was very solid - even the sea food. A great space and a wonderful wait staff. My wife and I celebrated her birthday there recently and had a rabbit croquet, salmon (hers) and lamb (mine) followed by a cheese course and a couple of very good glasses of wine. Rabbit was very good. Mains were alright - chef included a sausage with my lamb that was quite spicy and overwhelmed the meal a bit. My wife's salmon had a lot going on, and may have been a tad cold. My husband and I dined here for Valentines Day, and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We opted for the special Valentines Day dinner with wine pairing. Between the two of us, we had the celeriac ravioli, yellowfin crudo, pan roasted bass and chocolate raspberry mouse. Wine pairings and food tasted perfect, especially between the dessert and banyuls. Beautiful setting in an old factory. Upstairs tables overlook the kitchen. Menu is somewhat limited with mostly fresh, seasonal choices. I Ordered the Faro Island salmon, medium rare, which was delicious. Prepared with an ancient grain, spinach purée, butternut squash pastrami, shishito peppers, and a smoky foam. Very nice meld of flavors. Also ordered an exotic rum based cocktail (to start things off). So good I had two! Dessert was a bit of a disappointment... Fir the fall season, pumpkin bread pudding with vanilla ice cream. Twice the dessert was not cooked enough. If it was, I think it would have been delicious. Every dish was a thoughtful and unexpectedly awesome experience. Setting: The space is a magical, brick-laden, two-tierd job with a wide-open kitchen. BR gets a 9.5 for ambiance. Staff: Our waitress was fantastic and friendly. We ordered somewhat unconventionally, and she timed things out perfectly. Chef Paul is one of the brilliant stars in Omaha's (and indeed the nation's) culinary arts. The entire experience at the Boiler Room is crafted to cater to excellence in every field, with the entire staff wholeheartedly dedicated to the art of food, wine, spirits, aperitifs, coffee and tea. It would be enough for the Chef's meals to be exquisite, but it's not only the food at the Boiler Room which is perfect: the cocktail program exemplifies the kind of craft bar in which Omaha is desperately lacking. The Boiler Room has been consistently dedicated to making only the best drinks, and for the longest time served as Omaha's one and only craft bar for REAL cocktails of any kind of seriousness. The wine program is not to be matched anywhere else in Omaha, due in large part to Master Sommelier Becker who still hosts structured wine events at the Boiler Room on occasion. Not even -1- and done! First time there, we promptly ordered a btl of Rose' off the wine list, it took the waitress 15 minutes to locate it. it was brought to the table room @ temperature and opened, we told the server to chill it to a drinkable temperature, That took 20 more minutes, so we are 30-40 minutes into this thing no food or drink. After the wine was chilled we ordered our starters, the manager served the apps and upon doing this he told us we would have to leave by our table by 7:30! It was already 6:30. I asked if he was joking and he rudely said "no you will have to be done eating and off the table at 7:30." We we're in shock as there was no way we going to be able to enjoy our meal, let alone finish! Absolutely one of the worst customer service situations we have ever been in. We threw in the towel and left, not eating. Appalling is a good adjective. In summary, 1-why would any supposedly higher end restaurant even serve a white/Rose wine at room temperature? 2-how could any professionally trained mgrs(or not) even think to run a paying customer out the door for their own lack timely service!! 3-we will never go back, as there are too many great restaurants in Omaha to take that kind of abuse. 4-hopefully the owners of this establishment will read this and fire that person in charge. read more

As a complete newcomer to the Boiler Room, I was initially impressed by online reviews for this restaurant -- like, WOW, the reviews! -- and greedily booked a table for four: for myself, my mother, and two friends. But, alas, pretty much from the get-go the waitstaff at this restaurant were bizarrely -- and unnecessarily! --pretentious & rude. We were first seated in what felt like the kids' table -- the only table (as far as I could tell? not sure?) on the bottom floor, under a low concrete ceiling, and far away as possible from the other guests on the main level. When I first saw the table I kindly (but, really, seriously, in the nicest possible way) asked whether it would be possible to be seated somewhere else -- seems like a normal/everyday request, yes? The waiter told me that since I hadn't made any special requests along those lines, and all the tables on the main level were booked, I was out of luck. Apparently, though I do not live in Omaha, and have never been to the Boiler Room, it should have been obvious to me to specially request that I *not* be seated as far as possible from the rest of humanity. I said, "Oh, okay, I totally understand, no problem" (again, not exaggerating -- I was nice!) and the waiter said he would go have a second look. He came back a few moments later and reseated us at another/better table that was surrounded by 3-4 other empty tables that remained empty for the duration of the evening (leaving us to imagine either that he'd lied about all the other tables being reserved, or that he just didn't like us for whatever odd reason, or both). Every subsequent interaction with the waitstaff for the rest of the night was hilariously brief, like they could barely take the time for us, and they took great pains to let us all know how uneducated we were about the menu & the drinks every time we asked a question. My poor mother, who's also strictly a very nice person, was appalled that a restaurant in Omaha could have such a pretentious atmosphere and vowed never to take anyone there again. She was also appalled that they only gave us 3 1/2 slices of bread for four people. It must be said that the food was totally fantastic -- it was! It was really, really, really great food. But, for obvious reasons, the staff kinda ruined the experience. Good Lord, this was without a doubt the worst dining experience I've had to date...no exaggeration. In town for a wedding and a group of 7 of us had heard good things and read the reviews. After looking at the menu on-line, I had second thoughts based on the fact we were in Omaha, they had one steak option and it was a sirloin, but the reviews sold me. Limited options on entrees, I think 5-6 total, with an ever-changing menu, I guess I get it. I went with the Swordfish which was accompanied by some veggies and shrimp in a cream like sauce, as did 2-3 others at the table. 2-3 others went with the steak option just to find out that they were out. 6 entrees on the menu and they were out..wtf? We waited forever for our food, seriously 45-60 minutes. When my meal was finally put in front of me I have to admit that aesthetically it looked phenomenal. However, I smelled a peculiar aroma (more like a stench) coming from my food, seriously it smelled like something rotted on my plate. I questioned my nose with how the meal looked until my friend's wife, who ordered the same thing, mentioned the a** smell coming from her plate. We did hone in that it was a veggie in the mix, some sort of root veggie/type of potato...If I recall correctly I think it was a s**ttato. Staying on the theme of the side the shrimp was chewy, soft, rubbery and flavorless...I'd say borderline end of it's shelf life. Additional side item was some sort of sweet potato / quasi turnover with a flaky type crust. Tasted decent, think this was supposed to be warm but ice cold. Onto the entree. 60% of the swordfish was excellent, the middle 40% that was completely undercooked and raw, was absolutely disgusting. I thought to send it back but seriously couldn't wait after 2 hours to just get out. It's a shame, as based on the other reviews, maybe I experienced an off night. This place has so much potential and the set up and environment were very cool, but just a miserable experience. I think we spent close to 500 on a couple apps (not memorable) a couple bottles of wine and the opinion from the entire group was 'horrible'. Best thing about this experience was leaving and buying a bag of chips and some fruit from the gas station around the corner. Seriously, gas station fruit was a huge upgrade. read more

Our first visit to this 2-year old establishment was last night. Strengths: inventive daily menu; locally raised meats; locally-grown produce; friendly, knowledgeable wait staff (though a bit strong on the sales side); out-of the way locale. Weaknesses: a bit too fond of their "upscale" label; the menu's inventiveness would be significantly enhanced by vegetarian offerings; pricey (especially the wine list); tone down the playbook for the wait staff and simply let the honesty of the food speak for itself. So few places in Omaha can boast of doing so much for local food and it's done quite well here. We look forward to our next visit. read more

Great place for fresh and often local produce, dizzying cocktails, a well paired wine selection, and pure spectacle. The kitchen is open and lively but quiet. The food is always cooked perfectly and they seem to use every part of the animal. It's generally amazing unless you're not a brave eater. This place isn't for a typical steak and potatoes kind of guy - the servings aren't big enough and they can be a bit unusual. For those who like reasonable portions and interesting combinations, the Boiler Room is a lovely little find. The negatives: Although the restaurant is completely affordable in the fine dining scale, they charge a bit much for offals and cuts of meat that are usually thrown in the trash. I'll forgive this because they make them taste like heaven but I still can't help cringing a little when I see people pay twenty-some dollars for six ounces of hanger steak that costs $2.75/lb at the Asian food market. The cocktails are amazing but they come with a price: dealing with the very arrogant, rude bartender. His actions and attitude are so scathingly condescending that I want to find a way to shove his body into his own martini shaker and shake him!... or at least muddle him... one of his soft parts... talk about offals. Everything else is excellent. The rabbit, house made pastas, fish, the amazing things they do just by roasting, presentation and service make for wonderful dining. read more

We had our company holiday dinner there on a Monday night. The food was great as were the drinks. I am not sure if they were short staffed but we received poor service all night being left unattended for 20-30 minutes at times and long waits for drink refills. It didn't appear to be overly busy. The waitress dropped off a dessert menu and we all found something we wanted to order but she didn't come back for 30 minutes and people in our party had to leave. So none of us ordered dessert. At an upscale restaurant like this you wouldn't expect to receive service like that. I contacted management via email and never heard back. read more

I have been to this restaurant twice, and have been blown away each time. We are still talking about the peaky toe crab pasta from two years ago, and the wine selection is phenomenal. The servers here are amazing...they seem to intuitively know when you will need them and are simply impeccable. My wife and I went to the Boiler Room for the first time a few days ago to celebrate our anniversary. It seems like we've been to most of the restaurants downtown but we had never visited the Boiler Room. Our reservation was for Friday at 7 PM and surprisingly parking was relatively easy. Because the Boiler Room sits just outside the busiest part of the Old Market, there seems to be a little less traffic and parking space are more prevalent. The signage above the front door is a little small but because we knew where we were going, it wasn't a problem but for someone new to the area, they might drive by and miss it a time or two. The host at the front collected our coats and lead us to the table. It's uniquely set up that the entrance is on the street level but the kitchen is below the ground but both areas are open to one another. We were able to sit on the main level which overlooked some other diners and the open kitchen below. It seems that they kept the interior true to its original nature. I don't know the history of the building but I imagine it was a factory space of some kind. Also they keep the tables fairly separated from one another so it feels like you have a bit more privacy at your own table then you would at another restaurant. For dinner, my wife and I shared a cheese plate and then she had the steak while I had the lamb. The menu was small but sufficient. We didn't find any salads though, unless we misunderstood the menu. Our server was very good about explaining the menu items to us since some of the vocabulary was unfamiliar and he did so in a way that was informative and without making us feel silly for not recognizing some of the entrées. We both said to one another that we really appreciated the alert but relaxed manner in which he served us. Even the recommendations he made to us felt more sincere than they do most of the time. Frankly all the service staff working nearest us was great. It appeared they all worked within intentional synchronism. We have several people serve us or collect something from us and they all did so seemingly on purpose (rather than just to help a server who has fallen behind). We were impressed with their service on an individual and overall level. It was obvious that the pace of service was meant for a longer, slower meal but our server was quick to adjust to our pace. We're naturally quick diners. Without having before or after dinner drinks and knowing what we wanted to order, we pushed the pace faster than is typical but we didn't feel like it was a problem for our waiter. Our whole meal was probably just over an hour but there were many diners who were there when we arrived and still seated when we left. We were too full to try dessert but I think we would return for it. It all looked quite good and I think would be worth the drive to try a few things. Frankly, another night we might do dinner elsewhere (just to try something new) and then return for dessert and coffee. I think our final impression was that it totally competed with other restaurants of similar caliber but may not knock out another one on our personal list of favorites. The dining experience was amazing! The host/wait staff was extremely attentive. To top things off, I left my hat there and went to a bar a few bocks away, they called me to let me know and then brought my hat to me!!!! JUST, WOW! read more
