Bolay is one of the best places to eat in Gainesville. I love it so much, I don't think I can put it into words. If you've never been to one before (I hadn't before coming to Gainesville), it's kind of like a Chipotle but extremely healthy and with more types of cuisine. You make a bowl with bases, vegetables, and protein. You always get two vegetables, but one protein and base with a normal size bowl and two proteins and bases with a large bowl. My favorite base is the Asian sweet potato noodles, I love all the vegetables (Bolay is what made me enjoy broccoli and Brussels sprouts), and I enjoy the miso-glazed tofu for protein the most (I was also not a tofu person before this year). All of the sauces are good and the strawberry chia seed pudding is unlike anything I've had before (life-changing)! Towards the end of last semester I became unmotivated to cook as often and it got to the point where I'd get Bolay multiple nights a week. I would get a large bowl and eat half, then heat the other half up the next day (it is still good reheated). I always feel so healthy when I have it and it is extremely fulfilling! The staff is also friendly and the inside is very clean. I love Bolay and could not recommend it enough. The only downside is that it closes at 8:30 p.m., so if I have a late-night meeting or other responsibility I usually can't get it. This place definitely knocks Vale out of the picture, hands down. TLDR: don't want to cook but want a healthy, gluten free takeout option? Bolay is the place to go! FOOD: 5/5 Bolay's concept is simple: a healthy bowl of food. I am a small person, so I get the small bowl which consists of one base, two veggies, one protein, one add-on, and one sauce. My absolute favorite combination is the cilantro noodles with broccoli (I am OBSESSED with their broccoli; I've tried to recreate it so many times and have sucked the whole time which is why I come back so much), mushrooms, lemon chicken, and parmesan cheese. Other pretty good options are the cauliflower, BBQ chicken, and the steak. I'm told the shrimp is delicious as well, but I'm allergic and can't offer an opinion. I like how the food tastes on its own, so I don't typically get the sauces. They come on the side though, so if you want to try one this is really convenient! A small bowl with tax comes out to $8.55 AND if you're a student the Gator Greenbacks have a BOGO coupon for this spring. Such a steal!! SERVICE: 5/5 I've never had an issue with any of the staff. They're always polite and if you haven't tried something they happily offer samples as well. DECOR: 5/5 The logo on their wall is totally Instagram worthy. Their decor is open and modern. I fell in love with this place, as a vegetarian the options for different versions were more than you receive in most fast food places. The flavors were ecstatic and fresh. The boy taking my order even waited until the new potatoes came out instead of giving me the bottom of the last serving. This is a review on their Catering. The company I work for bought lunch from Bolay for over 20 people. When I went to the store to pick it up the food was still being packaged so it was definitely fresh. There were 4 big bags of food that I had to carry out to my car. full disclosure I am a large guy who probably looks like he can carry a bunch of food at once but I would have liked it if they offered to help. Some of the containers leaked during transport due to the type of container they use and how saucey a lot of the food is, but the spills were caught by the cardboard lining of the bags and the sturdy plastic of the bag itself. The food made it in one piece and was very good. This is one of the better places for catering when you want something healthier seeming because all of the parts and pieces travel well. The biggest hits were the potatoes, cauliflower, and lemon chicken. My personal favorite is the pork. All said and done, I don't know if I would go there outside of work but we will almost definitely be getting catering from there again. read more

I knew about this new restaurant ever since it opened, since I have been diligently keeping track of all of the new businesses in Butler Plaza. On the day of their opening, I chose not to attend because I did not want to be disappointed by this restaurant due to my disappointment with others that had opened in the area with similar concepts (read: Vale, Grill Fresh). Fast forward to Wednesday. I went to the food festival in Celebration Pointe and Bolay was a vendor. I had a sample of the food they brought and it was good. My husband and I made a mental note that we should visit the actual restaurant. Fast forward to today. We didn't have time to cook dinner so we went to the physical location. Oh my goodness! The food was amazing! They had a huge selection of well prepared food. After talking with one of the food preparers, She pointed out that sometimes people think that the food there is spicy but it's because they use SEASONING and that everyone in town is familiar with that. Flavorless food is my main gripe with restaurants in this town. I hope Bolay continues to properly season their food and not water it down to appease the masses. RUN don't walk- go here NOW! I was lucky enough to come across this amazing restaurant while visiting my daughter at UF. From the moment we walked in, the DELICIOUS smells were calling to us. We had no idea what to do- or what to get. This VERY kind employee took us under his wing, and let us sample items. There were so many amazing choices, it was HARD to choose. I went with a pre determined choice (the vegan bowl) and I was 100% impressed. EVERY bite was full of fresh, delicious flavor. My daughter went and made her own choices (white rice, potatoes, Brussels sprouts, BBQ chicken and pesto) As "odd" as those flavors sound- it blended together like magic. The pesto was so delicious we didn't want to waste any- the bowl was completed clean. To add, their drink choices were not like any I had ever seen. They had a handful of flavored tea options. I had the pineapple ice tea- it was refreshing and delicious. Their soda machine had many different choices too. I've had Bolay for work delivered and everytime it has been messed up. Either missing ingredients (like not getting tuna even though it's an extra charge) or swapping ingredients (like getting Brussel sprouts instead of broccoli). It's delivered though Bite Squad so you can't even get a refund. The only way to guarantee a correct order is if you are in the restaurant pointing at what you want. I am so glad they are open that I have not only been once, but been 3 times since they have opened their doors. Why you may ask? Well let me tell you! 1. It is so fresh! They are constantly cooking here to put out fresh, great quality, and amazing food that really is great quality. They let you have samples of pretty much anything and everything they offer while you are going down the line creating your bowl. 2. The offerings here are some of the best I have seen. First you choose your bowl size and then you get either 1 or 2 bases, 1 or 2 veggies, 1 or 2 proteins, 1 add on and then all the sauces you want. I usually get the larger bowl which is $10.99 for all the basic items. 2.5. Going with the offerings I am going to talk about what they offer. For bases you can get lots of amazing stuff. Here is what I have had as my bases: Cilantro Noodles, Sweet Potato Noodles, and Forbidden Black Rice. These noodles are AMAZING! the cilantro noodles are my favorite base and taste wonderful. I could eat a bowl of just that! Then we go to veggies. I have tried the Brussels Sprouts, mushrooms, and the sweet potatoes. The mushrooms are my favorite! Then proteins: I have had the BBQ Chicken, Spicy Thai Shrimp, and the Miso Glazed Tofu! The tofu is out of this world good and the shrimp are in the perfect sauce with the perfect taste. For my add on each time I have gotten the mixed tomatoes to give a little cooling taste! The sauces Spicy Thai is actually spicy and has great flavor! 3. Cookies here are crazy crazy good! They are gluten free which, hello who does not love eating that. I have ate way to many cookies here so far. The cookies are amazing! 4. The staff! So friendly and nice. They will make any accommodations for you and make sure you leave their location nice and happy! They will walk you through the menu if it is your first time and are gracious to help! Now this looks like a 5 star review and here is the only reason it is 4 stars. The price is very expensive. If you get the prime items your bowl could end up being close to $15-$20 dollars. My new favorite place! My husband got the power bowl which was delicious. He has a very big appetite and couldn't finish it because it was so much food! It was two meats, two veggies, and two bases. He said he would get it again for sure. I created my own and it was great. When I started the server offered to let me try samples. I tried the cilantro noodles which were delicious, and my husband tried the tofu and said it was good too. I ended up getting a small bowl with basmati rice, Brussels sprouts (SO good!), sweet potatoes, lemon chicken, Avocado and goat cheese (both an up charge but worth it), and the cilantro pesto sauce. Clean cut atmosphere, fresh and flavorful options, and super friendly and "actually gives a crap" kind of service. Now I'm no regular but I've been to Bolay twice now (one dine in and one take out) and both times have been exceptional. The first time my friend and I were greeted at the door by Jalyn who was mad welcoming and gave us a little menu 101 course, which was super helpful for us first timers. (You eventually realize it's just basically Chipotle's build your bowl formula but with more options.) Anyway, so we go through line and have some great suggestions on some of the staff's favorite picks, and sit down. I look at my bowl and holy moly was she pretty. I definitely had to snap a pic and then snapped some more around the restaurant (even the Uber clean bathroom) because I loved the vibe with tons of natural light, the huge fan, and the bright colorful decor. Now we get to the food itself. Man I'm telling you, I had a little sweet, savory, tart, spicy, salty, umami all in one baby! Sweet potatoes done RIGHT, balsamic mushrooms that weren't too heavy on the bals, some very interesting "forbidden" black rice that I got just to feel like I was breaking a rule, mint rubbed cherry tomatoes which were superb, and I got the lemon chicken the first time and the Thai shrimp the second time and both were super solid choices and didn't take over the other flavors in the bowl. A lot of the times it's hard to pick out flavors from such an amalgamation but somehow they pulled it off and you taste everything that's actually in your bowl! (P.s. a little bonus, our old friend Jalyn the greeter came by a few times too to see if we needed refills or anything else which was mad considerate of her) All in all both experiences were just as great as far as taste, quality, and service and I'm going to be going there a lot more before it starts getting way too popular.
