Came with my girlfriend to relive a bit of my younger days. I used to frequent the Boll weevil on shelter island drive in San Diego Bay when I was working on fishing boats out of nearby fisherman's landing. The original Boll weevils went out of business several years ago but a couple of franchises are still around. Home of the steering burger. Boll weevil brings me back to those days and fond memories. Server came to the table, took our drink orders, returning with the famous Boll weevil condiments tray and our drinks. She then took our burger orders. The food came out quickly and we dove in. Burgers were solid and tasty. Just not quite how I remember them. The menu has changed and been updated from the 1980's. So we ordered 2 different burgers, cut them in half and sampled both. I have been coming to this Bald Weasel since 1987 and it remains the same time capsule. Great for lunch or dinner especially with the kids 16 and 22. I Had Dropped off a Client next to this establishment that immediately caught my eye as a Familiar Burger, Bar, and Pool Hall restaurant Chain that I had went to as a Child in National City California. I had not eaten Dinner and was way out of my neck of the woods as I live in Chula Vista CA. So I stopped in to this remnant of a truly Delicious Hamburger Franchise I have known since I was a child. I was Greeted with extreme Hospitality from my Female waitress as I sat at the Bar. I spoke with her about were I grew up in National City CA which was the home of one of the oldest Boll Weevil spots in San Diego CA . Long story short. I Ordered a Classic Steer Burger as I would have as a Adolecent and as my parents did when I was a child. I also had a side of Onion Rings . OMG when I laid eyes on my Burger it just reminded me of the first time I went to Boll Weevil 46 years ago as I am 51years old now . The waitress asked me is there anything else I wanted Ketchup, Ranch, Special, Sauce. I immediately remembered the Special Sauce and the Yellow hot Peppers and She provided both. I took a Bite of my Burger. I immediately got a flashback of when I was 5 years old and took my first bite into a Boll Weevil Original Steerburger. Suddenly the cook Came out to the Bar and asked me how was my Burger is everything ok. I told him yes this is exactly how I remember the Steerburger when I was a child. He told me that the Owner orders an Angus Beef and Wagu Blend for the Burgers. I was shocked that the Burger was so Juicy and Flavorful and exactly delivered the Taste of one of the Oldest and Original Boll Weevil 's in National City CA. Many have seen my reviews on Burger Joints here on Yelp San Diego. I can Honestly tell you that Ramona CA Boll Weevil has preserved the Flavor and taste of the Original Boll Weevil Steerburger. If you are ever in Romona CA or if you just want to Taste an authentic Boll Weevil Steerburger, its Definitely worth it to Drive out. Stopped in for dinner while visiting family in the area. The place is really big and very family and child friendly. Plenty of seating and games for the kids. My guy ordered a pastrami on sourdough but didn't want Swiss cheese. Asked for provolone or mozzarella but they didn't have those cheeses so he said whatever. Unfortunately they put cheddar on the sandwich which we all know does NOT belong on a pastrami sandwich! He said the sandwich was really good as far as the bread and pastrami but the cheese ruined it. He managed to eat all the parts that didn't come in contact with the cheese. I had the peanut butter and jelly bacon burger (choices were grape or strawberry...I chose strawberry) and it was great! Don't knock putting peanut butter on a burger till you try it, it's amazing! This is a staple here in Ramona. If you want a good family atmosphere, then Boll Weevil is a great stop, even if you are just pass through. My wife is a huge fan of the chili cheese...well everything, but the fries definitely stand out. My kiddos love the cheese burgers and eat the whole thing pretty much every time. The Patty was pretty thin and tiny overall. Just ok. Not like we remember it from years ago at the other ones in Escondido and San Marcos. Fries were subpar and needed salt. The biggest disappointment was the condiments tray they brought us. The onions, peppers and pickles were barely 1/4 full. Not freshly topped off and just looked tacky. We told the waitress and instead of her taking the tray and refilling them she brought us two additional barely filled containers. So stupid. Sort of a dingy waitress. I wasn't expecting much from the look of the place. It is very dated but I am so happy I gave it another chance. Everything was amazing! I even got the courage to try the peanut butter and jelly burger, and WOW! It sounds horrible, I know, but somehow everything just goes together perfectly. The service goes above and beyond what you would expect. I have gotten Paul multiple times, and he is the best! So kind and friendly in the most genuine way. I came to Boll Weevil with my family to visit my brother in law. He recommended a lunch spot that I most likely never tried so we stopped by Boll Weevil. They are know for their burgers, so I was told. We ordered several different types of burgers. I ordered an Hawaiian burger which came with a grilled sliced pineapple on top. The burger was outstanding, I must say. Fresh soft buns, crisp lettuce, juicy grilled burger patty, and served piping hot. Their fries and onion rings were all great. I remembered liking it then but guess I didn't know any better as a kid Definitely not amazing. Guess nostalgic reasons weren't enough to make for pretty bad food. Had 1/2 steer burger with cheese and some onion rings Onion rings were ok but the burger was pretty bad. Shredded white/yellow lettuce and a stale generic bun like you get at Burger King. Most awkward dinner I've ever had. I'll just dive right in... the younger male wait staff (never caught his name) very off-putting to say the least. Girl came up to the register to pay & that dude just STARED at her boobs the entire interaction & followed up with a "I really like your shirt" (trump shirt ) Then when serving a table with 3 young girls the one told him she ordered a root beer & not a Pepsi his response was "well aren't you sweet" and put his hand in her shoulder. You don't touch people's children! When time came for him to serve that same table their food he went on to tell the parents "oh, letting the kids lead grace? At least some folks are still doing it right" KEEP YOUR RELIGIOUS VIEWS OUT OF THE WORK PLACE! Our server also decided that having a VERY uneducated conversation about satanists with her coworker was appropriate and about how our god blah blah blah. Firstly not the place to disrespect people's views and second.... Satanists hold nothing higher than themselves. FYI The male server decided to visit our table (not our server) and proceeded to go on about how he likes our tattoos and how his sister is tattooed blah blah blah. It honestly was the most awkward situation I've ever been. Food was absolutely subpar & tasted mostly of what I'd assume a weeks old grease trap would taste like. This review if for the All You Can Eat Fish & Chips and not the hamburgers. I know it's a burger place and you might say "Why would you order Fish & Chips at a burger place?". Good question. Thursday Night between 5-8PM is an AYCE special on Fish & Chips...that's why. I was apprehensive when I walked in but I figured "Hey! The parking lot is full so that's a good thing"..Inside, I saw that almost everyone was eating burgers...Hmmmm, that should have been a clue. We ordered the Fish & Chips, that comes with a salad. The salad arrived and I knew right away it was a pre made product, bag type, with a absolute minimum amount of dressing. It tasted odd and was wilted so I knew it wasn't fresh. The Fish & Chips arrived, fish was extremely hot, chips not so much more on the warm side and they were a frozen product. The fish was an unknown type, I just couldn't tell. Tilapia maybe? It was thin, mushy and more batter than fish. You just couldn't tell where the fish began and when the batter stopped...but it was all greasy. A combination of incorrect batter, oil too hot and fish cut way too thin. The flavor was like a thin mushy grease sponge. Right after we ordered we heard the cook calling out "No more orders, we are almost out of fish" The thing is, something like this is fixable. It really is. Thicker but fresh fish, fresh cut chips and a proper batter. The issue is will a change be made, and that I just can't answer. A plus is the staff was very friendly, down to earth and made sure to check in to see if we needed anything. read more

As someone who grew up in San Diego and then moved away, seeing Boll Weevil when we camp in Ramona is a flash back to some wonderful memories. Every time we camp in Ramona (which is 2-3 times a year) we make it a point to eat at least one meal here. This last visit, on 7/18, we made it in just time from Los Angeles for the AYCE fish and chips. It had been almost a year since our last visit and I was pleasantly surprised to see the new floors, table tops and a "refresh". The food was exceptional and plentiful. The following night we sent our daughter, her boyfriend and some friends in for the famed Steerburger - they ordered 1lb Steerburgers LOL! I think the staff was stunned but the ate every bite and raved about them when they returned to the campground. The staff is always top notch and the craft beer selection is amazing. Pitchers are a reasonable price and we always get frosted glasses. Keep doing it right Boll Weevil! Looking forward to our next visit! read more

We come here fairly often when we visit Ramona. We have our favorites. My wife's is the cowboy burger and mine is the triple cheese burger. We also get two baskets of fries. When our sons are in town for summer break we make a special trip for lunch and also enjoy the shakes. The owner works hard especially with what restaurants have gone thru with the pandemic shut down. He has a consistent staff that we see every time. Homey, welcoming environment. Have been here many times and have never had a bad experience. My boyfriend and I were seated in greeted immediately upon arrival. He ordered some mozzarella sticks, which arrived at her table within five minutes. A lot of people started to walk in, but at no point did the crowd affect the service we received. I want to stress that this place is known for its hamburgers so probably don't come here if you were looking for a salad.
