This unassuming little restaurant is a perfect slice of India! Love the masala dosa and aloo tiki. Definitely order the masala chai. They don't allow for free refills but it is so soothing before a big meal. I love the idli sambar here. come in with an appetite and leave happy. Don't expect a lot of ambiance. They place is definitely a hole in the wall but totally worth it. And if your mouth is on fire from all the spicy food. DO NOT ORDER ONLINE USING RepasO!!!!!!! Total scam! First of all, really hard to navigate payment page, a red flag I should've paid attention to. Text alert said our order would be ready in 20 minutes. Nope. More like 40+ minutes. The food was good but they initially forgot our chai. Then owner got them for me. Then the poor young girl hurried over and said I hadn't paid. I showed them my text receipt and the owner said it was fine. This was at about 2:20. At 4:30 we got a call from the restaurant saying our order was ready and we needed to get it. My daughter tried to explain that we has already gotten our food. Hours ago. Didn't get thru to the caller. I called back and tried to explain that we had ordered and paid online and picked our food up hours ago. The caller said yes, our order was ready. I said i had not placed a second order. She said yes. Etc etc etc. I called my bank and sure enough there was a second charge to my account by RepasO for Bombay Express. I had to cancel my card. While I still prefer Hot Breads over on McNeil Drive and San Antonio's India Palace, Bombay Express had really good Indian food. And if you are a vegetarian, it is better suited for that. I got the feeling it was authentic, which always helps. Their samosas are probably the biggest I have ever seen, and nice and crispy. And I really enjoyed trying Kachori for the first time in my life. It was almost too spicy for me, but I wouldn't alter it for the world. The medu vada was also tasty and fresh and delicious. The Dahi Vada was not the best choice. Having never had it before, I can't really say how it would stack up to other dahi vadas, but next to the other things we tried, it just wasn't interesting. Kind of like a bread pudding texture, but drowned in unsweetened yogurt. A gentleman eating next to us told us one of the aloo dishes was amazing. I can't remember whether it was the aloo paratha or the aloo tikki. So while I still think you should try Hot Breads first, Bombay Express is also fun for those who love good Indian food. read more

Went back for lunch after a two year absence. Definitely still good. This time I tried the lunch special and it's definitely worth the price. I couldn't tell you what was on the special because it's a rotational menu. You get rice, a salad, two pieces of naan (maybe not Naan since it's not as thick), and two entrees. This is the best Indian food in Austin easily. I have tried all the other contenders and none can match Bombay Express. I like Bombay Express because the food tastes home made. It is like you are visiting someone's home because the food is not too rich or greasy. It is has good seasoning. I would like it a little hotter, but I love spicy food. The roti is the most delicious bread in the world. I have gone here a bunch of times and I definitely prefer some of their daily specials over others but this place sets a high standard every day. read more

One of the few vegetarian Indian restaurants in town. I go here when I have a craving for their Yummy dosas and idlis, honestly I have not gotten past those two every time I go there. They do have some north indian dishes but I have not tried them. Food is delicious and the service is great, and I really appreciate the cleanliness. Austin, TX is probably more well known for oversized margaritas and breakfast tacos than it is for Indian cuisine. Don't let that stop you from hitting up Bombay Express, tho. I don't know a whole lot about the difference between North and South Indian food, but all-vegetarian Bombay Express is the latter, and they serve lots of fried street food type snacks plus a daily special and Thali plate on the weekend which is very good. If you are looking for something other than what you would typically get at an Indian restaurant, this is the place for you. Yum. I finally convinced my "must have meat" eating husband to come with me to try out some vegetarian Indian food after learning he had never had a dosa before(!). This place definitely lived up to the hype from the other Yelp reviews I read before going in. We both ordered mysore masala dosas and though they were pretty spicy, they were absolutely delicious. I like that they fold the dosas into triangles and place the filling mostly underneath the dosa so that it doesn't get too soggy too fast. And unlike some other places I've been to, they give a very abundant amount of potatoes/filling. I'm definitely coming back to try the rest of their goodies very soon, especially their chaats and dhai puri. read more

Waaaah.. a hidden gem in Austin. I moved to Austin few months back an was very excited about food...but hit a very big disappointment after finding out all Indian restaurant below avg Latino cooked, randomly spiced, weirdly cooked. But this place is great... Authentic central Indian test in all chats, great South Indian food and good service. The best part is they do not put carrot an peas vegetable mix in every freaking item including Dosa. I think they can improve their breads and make food little less oily but hack its still better than any other Indian place in Austin. I talked to the owner and he told me his family makes the food, who I met later and they can't find anyone who can match their taste so they are not able to expand. read more

I came here thinking that this place would serve some good food. I ordered the Thali, Puri was good, eggplant curry was ok, But rest of it, like Paneer Butter masala was real old. Rest of the stuff was blant. After going this restaurant I decided not to enter to any Indian Restaurants in near future. The food used to be authentic here but it literally sucks now. We ordered two orders of aaloo parantha and those were too salty. Then i ordered thali and the food really sucked. They had some weird beetroot potato thing and a beetroot pakoda so both were sweet even paneer was extremely bad. You cant buy some cheap beetroot and put it in every dish. read more

Gosh i hate north austin. reminds me of living up there, depressed, working for peanuts at dell. so since i left that hellish place, i seldom go back. but ever since bombay express opened, i've been making weekly treks. my fiance and i are OBSESSED. everything is delicious here...and there's no better place in austin for chaat. fresh, delicious, always brilliantly prepared. and i always order two or three things and take the left overs home. the couple behind the counter is amazingly sweet and always knows exactly what my fiance wants, because he pretty much orders the same thing everytime. i on the other hand, rotate from dish to dish because everything is so yumlicious. im so happy there is a vegetarian place in austin that serves up mouth watering treats at a great price. if they had a vegetable tikka masala, i would probably go every day. i wish they were located in central austin!!! read more

Bombay Express is a great Indian restaurant off the Parmer exit off I35 (Walmart complex). Owned and operated by a family (Falguni and Mehul), the food is prepared by the family on the premises. They usually offer a thali (a selection of several dishes, some chapatis and rice) and have a pretty big a la carte menu. The food itself is broad ranging - covers food from south India to some north indian dishes. Their Gujrathi oriented dishes are excellent. The place has a large seating area - not very fancy - but comfortable with plenty of light coming in thru large glass windows. The place is definitely kid friendly - my 2 year old loves it. Most of the food I have had there has been great. I usually get the thali since they keep changing the dishes that get served with the thali. It usually comes with a couple of vegetable dishes, a daal, some rice and chapatis and a sweet dish. The quantity of the food is good without being excessive. I would also recommend the spicy paneer roll - they don't have this on the menu, but will make it for you on demand. It is SPICY - but very very good. Ask them to tone down the heat if you don't like your food hot. My wife loves to get their chaat, samosas and south Indian dishes (idlis, dosas) and she likes them quite a bit. The prices of the food are very reasonable. Go as a large group so you can try different things. Seek recommendations from the hosts - they are very helpful. In fact, in terms of food that comes closest to what we eat at home on a regular basis, this is probably the best match among all the Indian restaurants in Austin. They have kept the quality of food consistently good and we are always made to feel welcome by the hosts. A vegetarian place with many options without onions and garlic. This is the type of place where you order at the cash register and the food is brought out to your table. The food is served in paper plates. The quality food was hit-or-miss. Some of the things tasted fresh, others not so much. The samosas were so stale I could not eat it.
