Being a Maharashtrian native, I always take offense when vada pav is served with a burger pun instead of the Mumbai pav. Strike one. The chutneys on vada pav were also not the authentic garlic groundut flavors you'd expect from the classic snack. The ragda patties was flavorful and tasty though. There is so much rave about their chaat and our experience was just okay. There was no line so we ordered quickly. It took minutes to get it. It's a food truck that sits next to a lot of Indian food. This is my third or fourth time eating here. I would say it's okay but definitely not wow. Most of the dishes tend to have a sweeter flavor profile. I expected the samosa chaat to be a bit spicier and tangier, and the pani puri could have used aloo. A lot of the dishes are made with ragda, which I am not a huge fan of. There are lots of other food trucks nearby. The food truck prices in Austin have really gone up. The starting prices are around $8.99 to $9.99 which feels very expensive. Good lightening and seating options available. It has Gujarati good, South Indian, North Indian, halal, indo-chinese, ice cream and couple more places. We got the dahi puri and vada pav. I wanted to try dabeli but it was already out by that time. Vada pav was ok, have had better in Austin. It felt dry and spicy. Dahi puri was amazing!! Definitely would recommend to try it. It's in the big food truck park on Anderson mill road. I'd heard so much about this place, so wanted to give it a try. I didn't like it the first time but given how popular this place is, I decided to give it another shot only to be disappointed again. I tried the pav bhaji, bhel puri and dahi vada. Only to be disappointed by all three. :( Vada pav want served on the classic Bombay Pav, was unnecessarily spicy not favorfully spicy. Dahi vada wasnt fresh - the vada was hard and tasted something fatty like buttery. I don't get why this place is so popular? We've been here a few times and have enjoyed every visit. We've had their bhel puri, raj kachori, samosa chaat, ragda pattice, dabeli, etc. Flavors are great every time. First time trying this chaat truck. I was pleased with the food quality + taste, and was impressed by how quickly and efficiently it was prepared. We ordered the sev puri, papdi chaat and dabeli. All items came in generous portions. The sev puri had a nice tangy kick, the papdi chaat was crunchy and delicious (I love that they added Dahi). dabeli was tasty as well though my friend claims it does not taste like authentic Mumbai style dabeli. I have been here multiple times, and I would say the food is average. Every dish tastes the same, and most are made with ragda. Last time, I tried their pav bhaji and dabeli, which were just okay. It could be better, and there are other places that stand out. There are lots of other food trucks so our plan was to try out from multiple vendors one or two items at-least. As a person who had never had chaat before, I really enjoyed this place!! I ordered the chaatpati special chaat and the two piece samosas. Both were great! I had no idea what the flavor profile was going to be like for the chaat and it was surprisingly sweet! It had crispy flour strips that had some sort of sweet and savory sauce on them with deep fried rice and lentil on top. The samosas were also great and was served with a sweet chutney. It was super filling so I have a ton left over, not sure how it's going to reheat though. The staff was super kind giving me suggestions of what to order and there was plenty of seating outside. This place has excellent customer service and opened on time. I got the Papdi Chaat and the balance of ingredients is excellent. Chutney and chick peas are tasted good. The seating area is shaded to get away from the sun and fans are available! Overall nice ambiance! They are currently short staffed but still received our order in a timely fashion. Awesome place! People are nice, service is self serve as its food truck, park your car and enjoy a decent chat at this place. For pulling of a decent chat ambience I give u 5 stars. On food, there is so much more to be desired. Pav bhaji was great, 4 stars for being a fresh pav bhaji prepared with love. Vada pav, a sad 2.5, overly spicy, pre made buns(not pavs) and meh flavor. More fun than a barrel of monkeys. Of course, I have never spent any significant time with a barrel of monkeys. I imagine the bottom of the barrel would smell pretty foul. But Chatpatti Chaat is still just a whole lot of fun. Never mind how many primates you have climbing around your living room back home. * * * Chatpatti Chaat is a Mumbai style street food truck. You are not here for dinner. You are here for snack-a-toodies. Chatpatti Chaat is in a very very cool food court at the corner of Anderson Mill and Pond Springs. Nearly all of the food trucks here serve non-US cuisine . They are generally staffed by entrepreneurs from the appropriate nation. The menus all around look absolutely fantastic. I have been big on the food courts at 5000 Burnet and at the corner of South First and Dittmar. However, in terms of getting interesting cuisine from around the world, The food court at Anderson Mill and Pond Springs looks hard to beat. * * * Technical Geographic Note: The Anderson Mill Pond Springs food court is divided into two halves. The court runs on either side of a gigantic Brazilian capoeira studio. You can't see Side B from Side A. You can't see Side A from Side B. It is therefore kind of easy to think that your truck is not here and it must have moved. Do not despair. If you can't find your truck on your side of the Capoeira studio, Just go around the studio and look on the other side. The studio is huge so this will be a bit of a hike. The other side of the studio probably has everything you are looking for. * * * The star of the food court is Chatpatti Chaat. Lots of the trucks get business and customers. But the biggest crowds by far are at Chatpatti Chaat. While we were there, carload after carload of Indian families pulled up to the truck. Six or more people would pile out of each car and order. There was Mom. There was Dad. There were the kids. There were Mom's friends and the kids' friends. Some of the cars also had Grandma and Grampa. Amazingly, Chatpatti Chaat serves all of these people fast. No one had to wait long for their food. In the middle of this customer deluge, Food was on our table about five minutes after ordering. We were the only Anglo family there. * * * Their website says they do dosas, but there was not a dosa to be had on the menu. They do do puris. They do do samosas. They do do chaats. They do do yogurt drinks, and Indian milk tea. THE DISHES ARE ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY TO DIE FOR. My wife had smashed samosa with ragda. Nearly everything here has ragda. Ragda is a combination of peas, tomatoes, chutney and onion. The stuff is insane. If I ran a food truck, I would put ragda in everything too. In this case, dump two samosas in a bowl, add a ton of ragda, stir it until it becomes smoosh, and serve it like oatmeal. I could eat that stuff all day and all night. I had puri - another house staple. These are hollowed out fried bread balls. They look like someone made miniature brandy snifters out of breakfast cereal. They look like cereal but they are addictive like popcorn. The house fills them with ragda ... a fine idea if there ever was one. You dip these into flavor sauces. How did it taste? OH MY GOD. The three sauces are tamarind, onion dal, and clear-hot. Tamarind sauce makes everything good. You could put tamarind sauce on sandpaper and sandpaper would be good eating. Tamarind with ragda and puri? All three of life's essential food groups all in one dish. The onion dal is almost as good as the tamarind. It wouldn't cover for sandpaper. But it is still fine fine fine eating. The clear-hot sauce cleared the palate from the other two items. It couldn't compete with those other all-star wonders. * * * Just for the record, Serving sizes are small - but sauce sizes are big. My wife and I finished our dishes in no time flat. But I still had 2/3 of my sauces left. I took all three sauces home and have been putting them on pita bread. I have found true pita bread happiness. * * * Sitting here at night by the food trucks Having one fantastic treat after another I felt like I was at the food carnival on the far side of the world. A lot of people said that this is similar to the street food you get in India but if Sev Puri is being served in a Pani Puri ka puri then you are from the wrong part of the chat loving India. Food does not taste anything like home and is very very average. The paneer puff is a frozen tortilla filled with weirdly marinated schezwan paneer .... Whatttt!!! The only good or wait .. half decent thing was the mango lassi. Hard pass on this place. I'm so happy that this place is so close to my apartment. I can easily hop on my scooter and get a quick bite to eat. They have many popular Indian street food items. The ladies inside are also super friendly. I love their Vada Pav (pronounced Wada Pao). It's a very popular Mumbai street food consisting of a fried ball of spiced mashed potatoes in a warm bun. Theirs is very good and affordable! I love the heat and if you need a bigger kick, they also give you the traditional green chilies. The garlic chutney they put on this is fantastic. Highly recommend getting one or two of these. Their special chaat is really well balanced. There's something magical that happens when you get a bite with the cilantro, pomegranate, and chutneys. Their puri is also good, though I wish they were the more flat ones. I really need to try the Bhel Puri next time I go! I'm thankful they don't pre-fill the puri so they don't get soggy. While the samosas were okay, I didn't enjoy them because they were cold. They were nothing to write home about. Not pictured here is the Gulab Jamun. Came here with my kids. We ordered the chatpatti special chaat, the sev puri, and the pav bhaji. First time eating this type of Indian cuisine and it was an absolute home run. The three dishes each complemented each other. The special chaat was sweet, the pav bhaji was savory and spicy, and the sev puri bridged the two!! A rollercoaster of flavors! First of all, it's in a food truck park--the kind you used to find all over Austin with tons of various cuisines. It's got Indian, Jamaican, Middle Eastern, Thai, bbq, Mexican, etc! Second, chaat is awesome and I'll definitely be going back for more. I got the samosa chaat, which had sliced up samosas covered in slightly spicy, tangy sauce with white peas, tomatoes, and onions and fried crunchy things on top. I also got a thandai to drink (also new to me) which was milk with saffron, almonds, and masala. So good! The owner also asked what spice level I wanted my chaat at, which I appreciated. I made the long trek from downtown to this food truck up north as we have been hearing from friends about this new place serving authentic North Indian chaat. And I will say that I was not disappointed....no, intact I was so happy! We finally have a place close to Austin for chaat. I went bonkers and ordered vada pav, dahi puri, Raj kachori, mango lassi. Every single item was authentic, mouth watering and beautiful to see and taste. The to go packing was impressive considering these dishes have sauces which can make the chaat unappetizing if soaking for too long. The kind man and woman at the window told me that they will be moving to a better location soon and I am hoping and praying they come closer to the city! read more
