We placed a pickup order on Tuesday evening (8/11), and unfortunately, this visit was a huge disappointment. The drumsticks were nowhere near as fresh and delicious as they normally are--they were very tough, dry, and just not enjoyable. What upset me the most, though, was the customer service. When I walked in to pick up my order, the server was closing out at the cashier. Instead of greeting me, she simply looked at me without saying anything. I was the one who had to say "hi," and even then, there was just an awkward stare with no response. I eventually had to say, "I'm here for pickup." That was such an uncomfortable and unwelcoming experience. I actually have interacted with this same server before. During a previous dine-in visit, there was a male employee and her working the floor. The male employee appeared to be doing pretty much everything, while she seemed more interested in being on her phone. Seeing the same lack of attentiveness again this time was very disappointing. I worked as a server myself for over 7 years while I was in school, so I understand that restaurants can get busy and that everyone has off days. But greeting customers and acknowledging them when they walk in is basic customer service. A simple "Hi, how can I help you?" would have made a huge difference. Between the poor food quality this time and the disappointing service, we probably won't be coming back. Normally it's a bit pricey and that's probably the main thing that makes me not go more than I do, it's pricey on the regular. However they have a $1 per wing up to 20 wings on Mondays and Tuesdays which is about 50% off a wing probably and I like coming for those deals because it's less busy and it's still great chicken but at a cheaper price. This is our first time Bonchon. We were enticed by the sound of Korean fried chicken to give it a try. We walked in were immediately greeted by a hostess, and asked to choose her own table. The ambience is nice and comfortable. We found a menu to be surprisingly simple with wings, chicken legs, and Bulgogi cheese fries as the main selections. We ordered 10 legs and we were able to choose two different spices. We ordered five crunchy and five spicy wings or spicy legs. The crunchy legs were incredible, salty crunchy perfectly cooked chicken on the inside. My son and I ate eight of the legs, but we're unable to finish the last two the food is filling. The fries were crunchy and salty, coleslaw was really nice and complimented chicken. We also ordered a side of kimchi, which was really tasty. Total bill was $45 with tip for two of us. Freshly eaten they are pretty good and there are several different sauce choices to suit your taste. This location is pretty small, but nice inside. For taste, this place gets a 10/10. The fried chicken and wings were light, crispy and ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. That's where the pros end. Everyhing else SUCKS! The service here was very slow. When my party sat down, we asked for waters and were waiting for 10-15 minutes when the server came back to take our orders....but still didn't bring out our drinks (water). We had to remind our server that we had not received our drinks and waited another 5 minutes before they came. Our orders came relatively quickly. Since we're eating wings and drumsticks, you would think that napkins would be provided. Well, they weren't, we had to request napkins in which case, they gave us 5....we were a party of 10. Jumping to the dining room, the place is clean and there are several TV's so that you could watch a different sport on each TV. Since the Lakers and Padres were playing, you would think that those games would be showing....They weren't. One TV had car racing, another had an NBA game that was taking place on the East Coast, and another TV had baseball (not the Padres). There was a TV that wasn't on and we asked if the Lakers game could be put on one of the TV's. Our server said, "No." After we were done eating, we had to use the restroom to wash our hands. The soap dispenser had no soap but there was a "Soft Soap" dispenser that looked like someone had just added water to it. Even with the added water, you had to unscrew the top to get the soap out because there wasn't enough soap for the pump to work. For a a place that charges an arm and a leg (or a wing and a leg) you would think that they would provide better service. Also, for a place located in Carmel Valley, you would think that their restrooms would have the proper toiletries, not some watered down soap from the grocery store. We were with friends that have been to this location before and have said the service has always been lacking. Though we really liked the food, we will not be coming back. read more

The good: The flavors are good. The bad: boneless chicken is way below mid. I've been to other Korean chicken places and the boneless chicken pieces resemble tenders or on the bigger size, fresh and juicy. The boneless chicken here though is literally chicken nuggets, size and texture of chicken nuggets. Ours were way over cooked/fried with it being very dry inside almost like cardboard. We ordered takeout twice now, and the food is so tasty that it could never fall under the "fast food" category. The first time, a few side orders were left out, so I called the manager to see what could be done. He promised to note my name down so that next time we came, he would compensate us. True to his word, our next order was even better than the first. We ordered their signature soy garlic drumsticks, chicken katsu meal, and the pork belly Bao. Beyond YUM! He gave us an extra side of slaw and the Bao dish was free to make up for last time. So 5 stars to the manager and his friendly team for their excellent service and kindness. This spot is like a self serve and bar like atmosphere that I would say is pretty on par for their franchise. I would skip out on the bao buns as they were smaller but they did have great flavor. Since it was our first time ordering, we did half soy garlic and half Korean barbecue sauce. My kids preferred the soy garlic and I thought the Korean BBQ had a nice tangy flavor. My mom and son had the popcorn shrimp which they said was good but definitely needed a dipping sauce, the spicy mayo was a good choice. This place is in Pacific Highlands Ranch and oddly enough was not that busy during the lunch hour. We ordered right at the stand at the door and took our number to a table of our choice. Sadly, this location did not serve chicken strips even though they used the same menu as the convoy location which includes strips. I ordered Japchae instead. The food came out quickly and they packed it in Togo containers, even for dine in, as if anticipating that you may save a bit to bring home. The Japchae was a bit on the sweet side but the ratio of ingredients to rice noodle was good. The rice noodle was a bit soft and overcooked. Sure enough, I saved half to bring back. Our server was fantastic, he was friendly, efficient, and came by just the perfect amount of times to make sure our water cups were filled. read more

First time here for lunch . I ordered the BBQ chicken strips with seasoned fries lunch menu. Not too impressed with the taste of the bbq sauce or the crunchiness of the fried chicken. However the size of strips was generous. The seasoned fries were quite tasty and had a nice crunchy texture ..the way I like my fries cooked. The accompanying soy garlic sauce tasted more like ketchup. You order when you enter and pay after you are seated and served your food . It was confusing what ambiance they are trying to create . Music was too loud for the lunch time. And, the genre did not seem to go with the place. There is a sports bar area or "pseudo"sports bar in the middle having 3 TVs on the wall : the end ones on a sports channel and middle one on a food channel. There were no bar stools. Two tables for a party of 4 each are situated next to the counter of the bar. My thought would be to replace those tables with bar stools and keep the seating areas as is. Maybe they do this in the evening to make it more hip for the later crowd... I have been to other Korean BBQ Chicken restaurants in the San Diego area that have been more to my liking. However , I would encourage you to try this place and maybe you may get a different opinion . read more

In general, I love the food and this was the first time coming to this location. The area is absolutely beautiful and certainly feels a lot less chaotic than the convoy location. However, we were very disappointed by the service and the food this day. We're not sure what was going on because nobody took the time to explain it to us, but you could tell that there was a lot of tension inside with the employees....the food took a very, very long time to be served with no communication and when it was served to us, it was all on Disposable paper plates, and bowls. One of the dishes we ordered was the bibimbap bowl so having that come out on paper just did not work, the food was not cooked like it normally should be and had they given us a warning that they didn't have actual plates and bowls that day we wouldn't have ordered it. The chicken did come out well (thankfully), but it was just a tense and uncomfortable situation inside. I'll stick to the convoy location for now and maybe after sometime, possibly give this location another chance. read more

I actually really like their japchae and appreciate that they can make it totally vegetarian. But this time I tried their bibimbap, and it was ok but definitely not more than that. It's good that they have tofu as an option, but there was no egg and not much sauce. So it was pretty dry. It's nice that they have quinoa mixed with rice. But it was not even as good as the decent mall food court bibimbap I got in UTC a few months ago. So this wasn't terrible, but I can't really recommend or gush about it. The food was good. I have no problem with that. The crispy breading stays crisp even after a while. How do I know that it stays crisp after a while? Well, when I ordered my order was taken by a very young girl who was surrounded by multiple friends and just chat, chatting it up. While waiting for my order to be called, I noticed that I've been a while and I was just about to ask a question about when it would be done. Well, it turns out that it was already done and it was placed on the rack with delivery order pick ups. The teen and other teens who are employees we're so busy in their conversation that they didn't even pay attention to what orders were for pick up or delivery. They just put them all on the rack so they can continue talking to each other. This was today, Sunday 3/8 at about 3:50PM. One of those kids noticed I was sitting for a while to start calling off the names for delivery pick up area and then my name came. I said, "it's been sitting there getting cold this whole time?Come on now." and they all look baffled as I walked out the door. So yes, the food was still crispy even when lukewarm.
