But if you just want some wings, a beer, and to hang out, Bonchon will fit the bill. read more

Arlington store had a wait time of 40~50 minutes on a recent Friday night, so staff there referred us to this shop. I'm glad we couldn't get a table at Arlington, because the Navy Yard shop was great. Like the one at Arlington, but this shop is much bigger, with a dedicated "carry out" booth at one end and the main entrance at the other, and a huge bar and dining area with high ceiling. Most things on the menu are less expensive than at most other Bonchon shops, and we had the 6 wings + 3 drumsticks combo -$12.00- with one side of daikon radish. Here is one other difference - you only get one complimentary side, unlike at the Arlington shop. The dining room was not even half-full, the lights were kind of dim, but server staff was great and our food came out within 5 minutes! Great tasting chicken! It might get a bit chilly inside so bring a jacket just in case. Long Story Long: As soon as I sat down, I was given a glass of water and utensils. Within 5 minutes I was given my first Drink. It was the Happy Hour drink of the day - Raspberry Lemonade with Korean wine (I liked it... a lot) So don't order without asking what the drink of the day is. The waiter noticed I was looking through the menu a lot so he suggested I order the small serving of fried chicken. Although it says "small" it's actually good for 2 people. I also ordered the Seasoned Parmesan Fries ($5 during HH), this was also a serving for 2. Waiters dropped by every 5 minutes checking up on me... They had good timing because they weren't being bothersome or forgetful. The food: As I said, the small order is big enough for 2 people. I originally asked for all 10 pieces of my strips to be Hot n' Spicy. And I have to tell you - if you've never had this style of chicken before, it is absolutely delicious - crunchy, yet juicy, and seasoned so well. The atmosphere is hip and bright. They have a large bar set up, and more seating area in the back. We came on a week night, and it wasn't too packed. I've heard that there can sometimes be a wait, but this was not the case for my experience. The wait staff was also attentive, and that is something that I always appreciate when dining out. To start off the night, we ordered these vanilla lychee martinis - really well prepared, chilled with balanced hints of each flavor. Great job bar staff! We ordered the seasoned fries; and oh my damn folks, these fries are packed with flavor. You know how sometimes fries can come out soggy or not well fried; well, these fries had a crunchy texture and coated with parmesan cheese and parsley to taste. I don't know what it was, but I could not get over this flavor combination. My friend and I split a plate of wings, half soy garlic and half spicy. Now, these wings are on a whole other level. As you take that bite into the crispy skin, you taste that umami soy and juicy chicken meat. Each bite gets better than the next. Wow, I am starting to salivate thinking about these chicken wings. Bye-bye bdubs; that's a thing of the past. Overall, delicious meal and great dining experience. Taste seemed they were pawning old/about-to-expire chicken, and doused it in flour to cover it up. We couldn't finish ours. My favorite and what I recommend are the Bone-In Soy Garlic... the Spicy ones are a bit too spicy for me. I wasn't able to enjoy it cuz my mouth felt like it was on fire. Soy Garlic is delicious though, sweet and savory. I've had the boneless and don't necessarily recommend it... bone-in is the way to go. The fried rice is very tasty as well for a side. When I first moved from California to Virginia and tried Bonchon I was shocked that I had gone so many years without ever knowing that this delicious double fried Korean chicken existed. I've gone to Bonchon several times since then and they have been consistently good. This location specifically is one of my favorites because the service is always great and while the wait for the fried chicken can be long (its expected), the wait for most other items on the menu are very minimal. They're also connected to a boba/dessert place that gives you a small discount if you show them your Bonchon receipt. On my most recent visit I decided to switch it up and get the chicken katsu. It was delicious and quite filling. I really liked that they give you two different sauces to dunk/dip your chicken in. Definitely recommend the half soy garlic and half spicy mix. read more

Food: Got fried wings and drumsticks, jap chae, and bibimbap. The fried chicken was good, but the bulgogi in the jap chae and bibimbap was really dry. The bibimbap overall didn't taste very good. It was dolsat so the rice was good, but the egg was scrambled and they added lettuce. The jap chae was a bit better than the bibimbap, but it included bell peppers which didn't play well with the rest of the dish. The manager (Jeff) made note of my shirt (I must have been channeling spicy Asian today bc I was wearing my sriracha T-shirt). I wasn't hungry-hungry so I went with the steamed pork buns. My dining companion ordered the strips and received wings (Oops) but Jeff was ON IT (SNAPSNAP!!!!) and we were allowed to keep the wings even while the kitchen was hard at work on my friend's strips. Waitress was gracious. Ish happens. I noted a difference in texture from the pork buns I had for lunch the other day and I was informed as to the preparation difference between the two locations. Sorry, Jeff, but I like the crispy rind pork buns I got in waldorf a little better than the steamed center cut. Some crispness would have been the BOMB! Still delish though. Spent about four hours there one night last year to catch a hockey game and was only able to get the attention of the bartender enough to get two beers. Separately, we felt forgotten in the restaurant side multiple times. Thankfully, the place is well-kept; it's clean, well appointed, and has plenty of seating to accommodate busy game days or even just the standard dinner rush hour. If you know what you want, just order takeout. Both traditional flavors of their wings, spicy and soy garlic, are delicious with the former being pretty hot. The seasoned fries are a must. The more traditional Korean dishes (bibimbap) are not as good as the authentic restaurants in town, so I'd highly recommend the wings, or anything from the chicken menu. Came in for a late Saturday lunch, happily they serve their full lunch menu instead of my despised brunch menu. Husband and I ordered way too much food, starting with the gyoza half and half and seasoned fries. For our mains he ordered the soy garlic wings and I ordered the chicken crazy spicy dish. For the gyoza I would say that the gyoza skin is a little thick and they are fried making them a tad bready, but they are still hella good. The spicy actually are spicy and this is coming from a heat seeker. The seasoned fries are excellent. I think they are double breaded, you get a lot, but $8 is pretty steep for French fries. My husband's Wing order was massive. He struggled to finish it so you get great bang for your buck and he said the wings were excellent. My chicken dish is supposed to be even hotter than the gyoza, it sort of was but not in a good way as at some point all you taste is that it is hot and not the flavor. That said the serving size was positively massive, I barely ate half of it. I'm not really sure why they top it with cheese and serve it with raw broccoli, but otherwise it's great. I would love to see more rice cakes in the mix. Or an option to do all rice cakes and no side rice. I've been to a couple different Bonchon's in the Tristate area as well as one out here in the SF Bay Area, and I think this one was my favorite one. The ambiance is chill but feels pretty clean. The food (my favorites being of course the chicken, but also the fried rice and rice cakes) was actually better than what I have had at the other locations. I'm only reviewing this one because it's my favorite out of all the stores. That being said, overall, I think you'll be able to get a similar quality anywhere you go. As for more details on the chicken, I personally don't like dealing with the bone, so I like the strips, 1/2 and 1/2 for the soy garlic and the spicy one. Never once have I ever tasted unflavored or burned wings the many times I have eaten here. It's seasoned and has the best --most flavorful, crunchy skin. So, what makes their wings so special and hold helm to such high regard!? I know the secret....its in the sauce and it so addictive. Their frying technique, coupled with the sauce is insatiable. On top of that, the fried-crackle crust is like 'crack' and leaves you salivating for more. I have had this stuff as leftovers the next day....and the crispy-crunch factor remains even after being refrigerated!! You have two choices of flavors: Soy Garlic and a Spicy flavor that resembles a Sriracha profile. The ground red chiles and garlic flavor....add a burn and ting....that even your lips are on fire! Everyone's tongue and sinuses were on alert at our table. LOL. Personally, for me, the Soy Garlic flavor sets the wings off the best and is my favorite. My only suggestion to you....Eat this stuff in moderation! You have been warned; I'm telling you to proceed with caution otherwise this place will soon become "Your Pusher" baby...food drug addiction for sure! Not enough sauce, and just didn't wow me like I expected. I also wish the format of the restaurant was more fast casual than the emphasis on full sit down. I came here for lunch with several coworkers after hearing several of them rave about the place. We all went for lunch specials; I ordered chicken strips (half & half) with steamed rice on the side. The portion that came out was good (I brought about half home), but it was so dry from insufficient sauciness. I asked for extra sauce but they don't do that (what?!), but the server could and did bring some ranch and some sriracha-mayo dipping sauces. The ranch didn't work well with the spicy strips, but the sriracha mayo was okay with the ginger strips. I wanted and was expecting the chicken to be sticky with all the delicious sauce, hence the rice to soak it up, so this really disappointed me. It might have been even more pronounced with the strips since they're white meat, which is naturally drier (in a bad way). Apparently in other locations you get a free side of a small amount of pickled radish. Not sure why that doesn't happen here, and it would have really improved my meal to have that crisp sour note. Sure I could have made that my one side, but that's really stingy. I don't get why this has to be a sit down restaurant. Is it just because of the time it takes to cook the food? Why not follow more of a Nando's model? I wanted something more relaxed. Also, be warned that the chairs and stools make a horrible sound on the concrete floors. Someone went too heavy on the industrial vibe here. Presumably they could do something to the bottoms of the chairs and stools to stop this nails-on-chalkboard effect. All this adds up to why I don't feel a desire to come back, at least not to this location. I think my coworkers enjoyed it more, so I'll wait to hear from them that the side and sauce disappointments have been addressed. read more

OUr server Pierreline was from Haiti and seemed a bit shy but accommodated all our requests. It's a bit cold in the restaurant, but if you're in the mood for crispy chicken this is the place. I haven't had Bonchon in a while since my shady experience at the Arlington location. I came here on a whim and good wings are always on time. I even made it in before happy hour was over. We shared the delicious salmon and avocado ball to start and then half and half wings. The spicy wings were a bit spicier than what I remembered. This time I only ate one wing because the heat was intense. The greeter and waitress made my night. Greeter Antonio ensured me that I would have an awesome meal. He said if it wasn't, he'd personally make sure that I was taken care of. Rochelle was friendly and attentive. On the way out Antonio was as pleasant as when I came in. If you are going to make Korean food - make it. Ok, ok, I tried their Korean dishes and they just did not taste good compared to real Korean food. Friends of mine swear by the wings. Again, according to me they are not fantastic. Now I'd spice level is your thing, you might want to go for the spicy wings. But I'm of the opinion that hot spices should highlight the marinade/taste of the dish, not overpower it. I do appreciate happy hour prices but it's still DC so everything is expensive regardless.
