During the pandemic I was only able to experience Bonchon through carry out but today I found myself in SE DC and decided to treat myself, so bonchon it was! As usually I ordered the Bulgogi which was delicious! To change it up instead of ordering their wings or shrimp I got the takoyaki... it was weird! It was the first time my food has ever moved in front of me! Anyways, I read that the Takoyaki is fried octopus balls! Personally, I didn't like it because of the leaf like topping (May have been the octopus) and the filling, it was weird but was happy to try something new! First impression: the staff took a really long time to seat us when there were plenty of seats available. Maybe it was because I was hangry, but it took longer than it needed to be! The food itself was pretty good! I always love Korean fried chicken (KFC) so it was nice having one in DC! If you aren't familiar with KFC, it is very crispy and flavorful!! Would definitely recommend soy garlic and spicy (it was pretty spicy). Do not get the sweet sauce, it does not taste good and is not worth it!! Was able to get a table as soon as we arrived but service was very slow. I was as looking to get some good Asian fusion but our waiter suggested to get the fried chicken. He explained the different flavors and said the plates are large and are usually shared. We decided to get a small plate of the chicken to try it and then get some Asian fusion appetizers. We ordered the 4pc and it took about 30m to receive our meal. We regreted not having an appetizer first. When they brought our food it ended up as an 8pc. I told the waiter right away that we had the 4pc but he said not to worry and we would be charged for the small plate. We felt guilty to eat it all and no order any more food. We were also unsure if it would take a long time to wait for other food. The chicken itself was good but nothing amazing or special. I had thoughts about seeing this place, and when I came here I think it stands. I've had legit Korean Fried Chicken, and I mean it's pretty hard to match. What results is Bonchon. It's sort of good, but it's not amazing. I wouldn't say after eating here that I would be a complete die hard fan. It's not bad, not at all in any sense, but for me it just was okay. Walking in, it's pretty much staged as a sports bar, and that modern/simplistic look with metal bench with tables. It wasn't anything special. The service was great, no issues there, but the food to me was just alright. It was a little bit all over the place, but then again I guess it sort of works as bar food? I know banchan is Korean for side dishes and Bonchon is hometown...so was it a play on banchan or taken literal as bonchon? Anyways, looking at the menu it was a bit of everything? Pork belly baos are from Taiwan, and then Tacos was well, Latin American.. So, definitely a fusion spot. They hit that right on the head. The food was pretty tasty, but not memorable. I've had fried chicken that was better, better flavored, and also crispier. I've had tacos that packed a bigger punch, and baos that melted in your mouth. This place does it well, but doesn't excel in any one of them? If you get that. I would definitely recommend this place if you're trying to branch out and it's a safe option. Came with kimchi and daikon, we ordered more kimchi (oops not oops) and a plate of japchae to share (fail to photograph!). Happy that they have traditional entrees, have to go back to tteokbokki. Everything was perfectly tasty and it the spot. Good choices of beers on tap too. I'd give a five star but it wasn't mins blowing, just really good. No idea what this dish is like in Korea, but we really loved it here! Some of the crispiest wings I've ever tasted. The hot flavor is hot (but not too hot!), but I liked the soy garlic more. Highly recommend. No idea how the wings stay so crispy with that sweet glaze, but they do. The soy chicken bibimbap was just okay. I really missed the fried egg on top; there were more like scrambled egg strips in the bowl, which I didn't like nearly as well. The red pepper paste played nicely with all the other ingredients. I wasn't super huge on the vegetables they threw in there. A lot of it was just kinda chunked lettuce, which I'd never had in bibimbap before and didn't super love. The quinoa was an interesting addition that I DID like, however. When we carried out the second time, I had potstickers and seasoned fries instead (I was clearly looking out for my health, lol). I had the potstickers brushed in soy garlic sauce. Woo boy, if there's one thing this restaurants excels at, it is making fried foods SO DELIGHTFULLY CRISPY. My potstickers were perfectly crunchy, savory on the inside, and sweet from the glaze on the outside. Just a little sticky, which I felt enhanced the experience. The fries, too, were outrageously crispy. They might have gone a touch heavy on the parmesan for my taste, but we still devoured them. Amazing customer service. We did not know that Boneless wings are new on the menu and didn't realize that we used to order Chicken Strips which are way larger. I would NOT recommend the boneless wings because they are super tiny and not worth the price, but we will be back to try the strips again sometime and hopefully they are as good and as large as we remember! I'm not gonna lie, I'm a snob when it comes to Asian food so I was a bit skeptical coming in, but after seeing the reviews I went in with a friend. We sat at the bar and had some drinks and ate some appetisers and had a main meal as well. The takoyaki was super yummy! The service was also pretty good and our waitress was very attentive, always a plus. There's TVs all around so there's something to watch if you're in there just chillin and eating. Good ambiance, not too loud (and we were there on a day there was a game). There is also indoor and outdoor seating, just in case the weather's nice. A group of us decided to try this establishment for happy hour. I read the reviews here and saw that they were responsive to customers. I felt that it was a plus. We ordered the wings, the chicken sliders, the bulgogi, the popcorn shrimp and the pork buns. The food was ordered through scanning a QR code at the end of the table, at which time we placed our table number and our orders. I will admit that we are an older group and using mobile phones to place orders was a bit challenging for some people in our group. I think that there are advantages to the mobile menu: cuts the cost of traditional menus as well as allowing the guest to always have access to the menu. I didn't necessarily care for having to continuously charge my card instead of being able to open a tab. One: financial institutions (those that are alert anyway) are monitoring the use of cards to watch for fraud. If they suspect fraud, it could be embarrassing as well as annoying to have your card deactivated. Two: each charge brings up a tip menu when placing an order. Not necessarily the thing that a customer wants to keep seeing. Overall, the food was good. The only complaint from a couple of people in the group was that the pork buns didn't seem to have seasoning throughout the meat. The chicken was good, and the selection of the amounts that you can order is good. The drinks came relatively quickly. The customer service was absolutely top notch. The seasoned fries were amazing and in particular the orange dipping sauce was pretty addicting! They have the best (and I mean BEST) French fries that I have EVER had. And I am nottttt being dramatic. You will become addicted, so take it slow.
