Not sure why Bone Jour's average rating is so low, but they were very good with communication and efficiency! My senior doggo, Xena, got a simple bath and grooming appointment with toothbrushing (extra $10), for the grand total to come up as $77 (so $67 for the wash/grooming). The process to get a grooming appointment may seem daunting at first, but I assure you, it goes fast and is all online. You go on their site and fill out a form for grooming, your information, your pup's information, and create an account where you can fill in your payment information. Then, all you have to do is email your pup's up to date vaccination records to Bone Jour (they will tell you these steps if you call or email them as well). I believe they are doing this for safety reasons, which puts me at ease that my dog won't get any infections here. She came back happy, smelling very fresh even 2 days after, and they even sent her back with a nice red bone bandana. The overall appointment took about 3 hours and it looked quite busy since I saw 3 other people dropping their fur babies off as I was arriving. They are staying safe with COVID protocols and assigning people generous windows of time to drop off their pups (ie: we were assigned the 7-10am slot). Bone Jour is staffed by friendly, organized, and efficient dog lovers, everyone spoke so well of Xena and I could tell they were gentle on her weak teeth and detail-oriented with her grooming! read more

Not for grooming! I will never take my dog back to Bone Jour for a grooming. We have gone twice and both times had terrible experiences. The groomers are the main issue. They will accuse your dog of being aggressive when they are not. They will also accuse your dog of having matted fur and use that as an excuse to shave your dog instead of giving your dog a breed-appropriate cut. My dog looks like a rat and the fur on her tail will take months to grow back. The kids are literally crying. Do not go to this establishment for grooming. read more

They do a fantastic job grooming our two Newfoundland girls!! These are big dogs, and one is a new rescue that has not had exposure to many things including grooming. She was full of fur, matts, fear and I'm sure lots of energy overall. Bone Jour worked wonders and these girls look beautiful!! We have been customers at Bone Jour for over 13 years. Not once have we ever attempted to side step the Salon's policy on vaccinations. Despite this, my word that I would have the dogs vaccinated before showing up at the salon was not good enough for Alethea, who refused to relay my dissatisfaction to Becky the owner until I made repeated requests that Becky be consulted on treating rule abiding and non rule abiding customers the same. I was told in March of this year by Alethea the manager, "Mainly, we had to stop scheduling appointments prior to receiving proof of vaccines because too often we had issues at check-in." Becky did intervene and instruct that I be "trusted" to keep my promise to vaccinate the dogs. Today, I received notification from Becky, that my word as a long time customer is no longer good enough at the Salon. If you can't trust my word to abide by your rules; why should I trust your word that you will keep my dogs safe during their stay with you? I certainly have a very big issue as a customer, when you repay loyalty and adherence to your rules, with blanket policies that inconvenience me as much as your more "challenging customers". Went in for the second time for a nail trim for my 16 month golden doodle Messi - waited in the front area while he was taken to the back room -- heard many many crying dogs and saw on the computer screen, many dogs all over the back .. very loud.. a woman the. Closed. The door when Messi was returned I was told he must walk a lot outside he really only needed a little bit on each nail and that he really didn't like having his nails trimmed ... well NOW I KNOW WHY .. walked home and noticed that he was licking his paw - picked it up and saw blood everywhere - called the shop back and they explained HOW COMMON THIS IS , no apology money back etc, I had to explain how we minimally deserved an. Bone Jour did an amazing job with my poodle! The friendly front desk gals asked us plenty of questions and exactly how we wanted his hair done. We were recommended this place by our vet. Initial impression from our appointment by phone was horrible, the person on the phone lacked any people skills. "Do you want your dog shaved" !?!?!? No I do not want my 6 month old purebred golden retriever shaved! Where on earth does someone start off the conversation at that question. It was a red flag. Once we arrived the intake staff were ok but seemed more interested in what had to be done for intake then getting to know us and our dog, helping us feel comfortable etc. similar theme as the phone booking. Set our expectations at least. Ask questions about him and his behavior etc... Anything we need to know about your dog? This is what were going to do... basic stuff. Act like you care. Then when I come to pickup pooch the folks at the front desk were distracted and un personable again. They forgot my receipt after asking if i wanted one and didn't even want to go out of their way to help communicate how things went even after probing some. They could care less was the attitude. Someone was even eating their lunch at a table where I could not provide payment without crossing her to hand the person my credit card. So much for social distancing protocols. He looks good and smells good, but was limping, so their nail trim could have been more careful. Par for the course. I could be wrong but looking back at the grooming folks from the street the lack of diversity in the staff actually doing the grooming work was telling and felt more like a sweat shop. I suppose communication barriers may be a problem, team issues, hence why no feedback was given to the front of house from the back leading to their lack of desire to communicate better with us. We were happy with the cut but as much as I want pooch to be happy while he was there, owners should feel comfortable and pleased with the staff's people skills. At least fake it.... "oh your dog did so good and behaved himself and smiled and is such a good boy. Maybe I should give them credit for authenticity because my gut tells me its accurate. Due to covid stress I suppose it could be difficult with all the changes in processes. We may try again but if things don't improve on communications next time we likely wont be back. read more

I dislike giving less than good reviews but when an employee is unnecessarily rude to me, it is hard to ignore it. I stopped by the shop because I tried to call but their mailbox was full. I mentioned this to the employee with the mauve colored hair - she ignored my comment and was not apologetic or interested in this. Then she could not find my record in the computer despite our having been there at least a dozen times over the past few years. Finally, she found the record by the dog's names. I asked what owner's name was associated with the record - she seemed agitated and snappy. I asked her if she was always like this with customers. She replied: "Yes, customers that 'talk too many questions' deserve this."  Somewhat appalled, I left the store thinking it was time to explore other options for grooming our two small dogs. Later, visiting their Yelp page, I noticed it is marked as "unclaimed" further reinforcing my suspicion that the owner simply does not care. Sadly, I had good service in past years. read more

I would love to give five stars, but it can be next-to-impossible to get through on the phone lines. Once the lines were down for a whole day. This can be really frustrating to customers. Otherwise, though, Bone Jour is the best place in the area for doggy day camp!  My doodle LOVES going!  They are open 7 days a week.  They do not kennel the dogs for two hours in the middle of the day, like most places do, which makes both of us very happy, and allows for mid-day dropoffs and pickups!  ALSO, they take your dog outside for a walk once if there a half-day, twice if there for a full day!  The shop is super cute and has adorable doggy items, from cookies to toys to leashes and collars.  Once our regular groomer (a friend who lives 40 minutes away) got sick the day my pooch was to be groomed, and Claire was able to groom her.  She did a great job.  Highly recommend! read more

I took our Coton de Tulear puppy to Bone Jour for grooming on Friday 4/7/16. It is the second time we have taken our puppy there. The first time there was only a minor problem the first time because one leg was not trimmed evenly. I pointed it out and the groomer fixed it. This time they called me to let me know that he was ready to be picked up. I sent our babysitter to pick him up because I couldn't make it and I paid in advance over the phone. Our babysitter texted me pictures of our dog from our house and it was clear there was a HUGE problem. There was a huge hunk of fur out of the middle of his back near his collar. I called Bone Jour and asked what happened. They sent a note home with him and -- apparently the clippers "slipped." I said that from the pictures he looked terrible and I wanted to speak with the manager. It is Tuesday and I have not heard a word from the manager.... read more

It is with great disappointment to write this review. This business needs to be seriously investigated by the authorities. I took my dog to this groomer to have his first groom done ever, as he is only 8 months old. Unfortunately, the cut was not as we expressed and detailed to the groomers and staff. We were communicating via email and the owner offered a re-do. I made an appointment and took my puppy again to this groomer. My 13 year old child was accompanying me and was humiliated in front of some other customers witnessing the owner by the name of Becky speak to me in a demanding loud voice, no we don't do redo's. It should also be noted that after showing her the email I received from her establishment inviting me back in, she continued to neglect the agreement and make my daughter and I feel uncomfortable in front of other customers. What was even more concerning is that I mentioned to her "Why are you speaking to me in that manner", and her other employees were signaling and pointing to her that she is a bully. She loudly said "take your dog and get out of my store". I then felt even more embarrassed because my daughter and I didn't do anything except want what we paid for and expected for our puppies first cut. I ended up paying and leaving shaking in my bones with frustration. Even more sadly my daughter had a traumatic experience. I highly don't recommend this business for service or employment. I brought my dog here in November after making an appointment for a hair cut (his first). When we showed up, they claimed that the appointment was only made for a wash, and that they couldn't cut his hair. I was annoyed, and someone that subscribed to a "the customer is always right" would've made time to cut his hair, but they didn't. My appointment was at 10 am and they said he would be done by 3. Five hours for a wash seemed a little long. However, he wasn't out until almost 5 pm and when I continued to call back after 3 when I thought they would be finished, not only did they underestimate how much longer it would be, but she got increasingly more rude to me. I wasn't really annoyed until she rang me up and it came to $80 for a wash, and no cut, for a 40 pound dog. The quality of the wash was good, but for the price, service, and number of hours they kept him, I will not be coming back. read more

We have two poodles, both of whom we groom here. We have had them groomed at several other places including petsmart, and will never return anywhere except here. While it is a tad pricier, and often takes longer for my dogs to get in and out, it is worth it for the quality hair cut they get. I have not been to ANY dog groomer who could groom my two poodles as well. One of them is also a behavioral wreck and probably couldn't be groomed with any other less patient groomers. It can take a while, often the dogs are there for several hours, however it is worth it for the quality hair cut. There is not another groomer in bethesda that is worth going to. I would recomend making an appointment in advanced as slots fill FAST. read more

We've never boarded our dog there, but we have had numerous hair cuts there. We have a dog with a sort of unusual cut, and they have always done a fine job (although we did have to provide them with a lot of photos....). They're efficient and clean. There's a small pet boutique with leashes, treats, etc. Of course, it being Bethesda, the cuts are expensive, but in my opinion, worth the money. read more

at my last visit one of my pups wound up needing an emergency visit to the animal hospital after getting an ulcer I. one eye and in extreme pain due to them using the wrong shampoo. he also had a small cut near his neck. no one called me to let me know or responded to my calls for days to discuss what happened. with the exception of one employee I received no apology or offer to make things better. I was also accused of sending the wrong shampoo which I never bring on my own. they also lied about why my groomer for years left. pls do not send your fur babies. read more

ok, a friend recommended this place and told me to look for sam, my dog is very sweet and friendly and old 15 maltpoo about 10 pounds, when we walked in the person at the reception tells me oh he is old :-/ i was like, ok yes as u call tell, then she told me to sign a paper saying that they r not responsible if sonething happen to my dog during the grooming because hes old :-/// i took him at the same spot in alexandria for 9 years and never never had any issue, even when i moved to toronto for 6 months we didnt have any problems anyway i signed the paper, then a guy walks in with a small, younger dog, then she greets: oh he is sooo cute! i was like?! WTH?! so unprofessional, then i ask to see the groomer, and the answer was like no, may i see the place, no, i was really not happy to leave my dog there. My dog had been going to BoneJour daycare for over a year when he came home with Kennel Cough (KC). Its a risk every owner takes when sending a dog to a kennel or daycare and I knew that. What I didn't know at the time is that the owner, Becky, had known about the cases and chose to not reach out to BoneJour clientele to warn them that KC was going around. I was told by several workers that Bone Jour staff was well aware and still no warning calls, texts or emails went out. I kept my dog home for 2 wks after the diagnosis and prayed that my elderly dog wouldn't catch it...but she did and it turned into pneumonia! Sadly, she is terribly sick. I called Becky to discuss the situation but she wouldn't take my call. And she never called me back. I relayed my disappointment to the manager, who was lovely as usual. I am truly disappointed in Becky and the way this outbreak of KC was handled. Transparency is the answer! Just let clients know so they can protect their beloved dogs, both at daycare and at home! I will not longer send my dogs to BoneJour - not because of KC, but because of the way it was (or wasn't) handled. read more

Very poor customer service. Not only did they not follow my specific directions, they didn't even give my dog a haircut. Then they tried to charge me for a full groom. After numerous phone calls and complaints to the owner, she never contacted me and wouldn't make any accommodations for their mistake and my time. Very poor customer service and dishonest. I took my first standard poodle, Rosie, to be groomed at Bone Jour almost 18 years ago, and I am still entrusting my poodle, Rollo, to their great care and grooming today. I know Rollo will be safe and beautifully groomed while at Bone Jour, and the staff is great at writing down your wishes for your dog and any special needs. I have used Bone Jour for years and they usually do a good job. This last time will be my last. First they lost my "card" which describes previous services. After picking up my dog I noticed that her paws were bleeding. I brought it to the attention of the attendant who then asked if I had requested that they cut her nails as short as they could. I hadn't. Sorry, I can't deal with anyone who tries to transfer the blame to me for something like that. For as much money as they charge, I expect better customer service. My two dogs were groomed beautifully. They were both over due for a grooming, with lots of mats. They've never looked so good! I dropped them off at 9 AM, and discussed what wanted with the groomer. I was told they'd be ready around 2 PM and they were! Very happy with the services! read more

Took my puppy to petsmart, and she had two horrible experiences. I looked on yelp to find a place nearby to use as my new groomer, and this place was amazing. Drop off is in the morning and they call you when they are done. Everyone has complimented my dog on her new haircut, when they said her haircut looked poor every time after I took her to petsmart. They also have some cool treats to buy and give to your pet after if you want. Definitely going to use this place again. read more

After running into a random woman at the vet with new fear and trembling in her dog and finding out that she was also just groomed here, I decided I needed to post a review. Please watch for behavior changes, especially fear, in your dogs after a grooming. I brought my dog here ONCE because they could groom her without delay in 1 1/2 hours. They did groom her fast and she looked good, HOWEVER she immediately started having panic attacks, trembling uncontrollably when she saw me pick up a brush-this used to be our relaxing couch activity- and trembling in fear at the vet cowering in the corner, and trembling when I would come up to her from behind and even when I accidentally touched her in bed . I ran into a neighbor who mirrored this experience with her small poodle as well and she shares my same sentiments. After two months, my dog is finally getting better with me and her panic attacks aren't as frequent, but her brushing and grooming has become almost impossible. I'll never be able to drop her off at a groomers again-it's that bad and heart breaking! Please read the one star reviews that are not posted for some reason, but I found some similar one star posts. I took my shih tzu to Bone Jour because I thought an upscale groomer would take terrific care of my dog. This was so not the case. I would have probably been better off at petsmart. When I picked my dog up this past Saturday after being at Bone Jour for over 7 hours, she was scratching profusely all night, into Sunday. On Sunday morning, I noticed a large swollen area on her neck, (hot spot); as the morning went on, the area began to puss. I immediately took her to the vet and was told she had an infection. To treat the area, they had to shave her, flush it out and give her an injection to help with the itching. Not only was this traumatic for my dog and myself, but I incurred a vet bill of $70.47, when I just paid $75 + $10 tip for grooming! While my vet stated that the cause of the infection could have been anything from an insect bite to trauma, I am extremely disturbed that the groomer did not mention anything to me when I picked her up. After talking to my vet, it was clear that there is no way it was not visible to the groomer. My was in Bone Jour's care from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and I am certain she was fine when I dropped her off Saturday morning. I would expect that when I leave my dog in a groomer's care, they would take notice of an abnormality such as this. Instead, when I picked her up, she had a bandana wrapped around her neck, and was told nothing. I have to say that I would never feel comfortable leaving my dog in their care again after this experience. I must also mention that when I got home on Saturday after picking her up, she ran straight to her water bowl and guzzled water like she had been deprived for hours. This is very unlike her normal behavior, and again, I am disturbed by this. Clearly she was not given any water for the 7+ hours she was there. I contacted Bone Jour Monday morning and spoke with the manager, Becky. She asked me to send her an email which I did and I also attached pics. and vet notes. Becky took 3 days to get back to me and when she did, instead of offering to reimburse me, she offers me her unsolicited advice on pet care and hot spots/allergies, and a free grooming! Needless to say I will not take her up on this offer and will never return to Bone Jour or refer anyone there. read more
