Most authentic Bengali food. The place itself is a small little hole in the wall, basic furniture. Ordered Shorshe Ilish and Fish Chop. I would rate them 10/10 both for quality of maach and preparation. I am very fussy about Mishti Doi and this was excellent. I would rate it as 9/10. The Fish Dopiaza which is similar to Macher Kalia was 8/10. I would highly recommend this place for anyone wanting to eat good Bengali food. read more

This is possibly the worst restaurant serving Bengali food in all of USA. I had ordered Ilish shorshe, then they persuaded me to get their special for that day ( I was on the phone) which was fried ilish (unfortunately it was a baby ilish which is illegal to export) , malaicurry and muri ghonto. The muri ghonto was made from stale fish it would seem and the rest of the dishes I almost wanted to throw up., gallons of bad oil and too much spice that destroyed the taste of the fish. I will never again order from this place or recommend to it anyone. How sad! read more

Authentic Bengali/Bangladeshi food. I haven't come across many authentic Bengali food places in the United States, so was really looking forward to visit bongos and I must say I wasn't disappointed. Lots of fish options- pabda/illish/katla/talapia/rohu and the list goes on and on. A bongs Disneyland. Shorshe Ilish was phenomenal. Didn't think I would ever come across such authentic hilsa outside Kolkata. Also, another must try- Muri ghonto. Cozy comfy place....the wait staff took good care of us. However cleanliness was an issue. The tables were stained and sticky, big big turnoff :( I hope they can sort that out, otherwise mighty impressed. read more

There aren't many authentic Bengali food in northern california. Bongo's is definitely an exception. Their Bengali food collection is pretty good. I really like their snacks and dessert. Their mughlai Paratha deserves special mention. read more

Did a take out and yes they are pretty good!! The fish chops were excellent. We had also ordered paratha with mutton rezala and both were awesome!! However I would definitely like to point out that they should do better with portions. 1 plate fish chops -just 2 pieces, 1 order paratha - 1 piece only. For the kind of price Bongo's you should improve on quantity, else you won't have repeat customers on a regular basis. For me - Bongo's I will definitely comeback but maybe once a week or twice a month - your price point is luxury right now.... read more

If Bengali food is what floats your boat.. (Full disclosure I am one :-) ) THEN THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU. Full marks on all the food items. I know a couple of reviewers have commented about the occasional absence of menu items, lack of space, etc. etc. but guys give these folks a chance and let them grow! I bet there would not be more than a handful of Bongos in the Bay who would ever be able to actually cook at a level like this !!! not to mention that the second and third generations probably would not have no memories of these things if they dont get a chance ! We are thrilled to finally have an authentic Bangladeshi restaurant in the Bay Area! We ordered rezala, chicken roast, polau and fish chop and LOVED it! The restaurant is small and was packed with people so we got it to go. I just really hope that Bongo's can maintain the quality of the food and hopefully can expand the menu over time. We went in a large group right after Saraswati Pujo (lots of rush), ordered a gazillion items from the menu, and got everything served in good time! And every item was superbly made. Authentic, tasty Bengali food that made us lick our fingers long after the meal was over. Fish cutlet: Crisp batter, perfectly seasoned, fresh-tasting fish inside. Burhani: Never had this before, what a nice spiced yogurt drink. Cross between a lassi and a chhas, but with green herbs blended in. Goat rezala: Rich yet not spicy, full of "patha" flavor. Lots of pieces! Fish dopiaza: Oooh...fish fried just right, lots of rice went happily with this sauce. Shorshe ilish: Enough said! Kosha mangsho (special): This was IMO the star. Roasted spices and perfectly cooked chicken with just the right amount of red oil seeping out. Kochuri (koraishuti): Lovely (daughter's favorite!), went really well on its own or to clean up the bowls above. Rosogolla: oh my god, these were huge, light brown, soffft, and swimming in syrup. Mishdi doi: melting in your mouth, so so good. We're going back soon to taste everything we missed! Mughlai paratha, Muri ghonto, and Goat biryani in particular... :) read more

Mostly authentic Bangladeshi food. The chicken curry and kolija bhuna/beef liver curry (special menu item) are my favorite. Other items that I liked and tastes authentic are fish dopiaja, chicken roast, goat rezala, mughlai porota and kacchi biryani (Bangladeshi style goat biryani which is different than regular goat biryani). It's a must try order-to-go place because the ambiance isn't that great. read more

Tasty food, small menu, handled overwhelming opening weekend with grace. 1. They got overwhelmed by interest in them. 2. Queue at 1:30 was 30 minutes to get to the order counter 3. Another one hour till we go our food. 4. They handle the long line with patience, even chatting 15 minutes helping a customer order (that of course added to the delay in ordering, kitchen was overloaded, so not sure it made any difference in food delivery. 5. They started running out of dishes as we got to the ordering counter. 6. Like dhaba than a restaurant, which was fine by me. 7 Food items: 7.1. Pulao - good 7.2 Elish - good 7.3 Goat Rezala - good 7.4. Fish Chop - not what I expected but good 7.5. Roshogulla - not the traditional one, to be fair, they did say it contained other ingredients. Would not order again. Too sweet. Will revisit when supply meets demand aka dont have to wait 90 minutes for food. :) read more

The food here tastes finger lickingly delicious. Interesting preparations and use of spices. One should definitely try their Fish Chop, Veg / Chicken Biryani. They are as good as you can get it anywhere. And if you like deserts, Roshogolla should not be missed. I also really loved their version of puchka. Insufficient biryani portion and inconsistent. No where close to Kolkata biryani. Polao was a huge disappointment and tasted more like colored pilaf rice. Chicken roast was promised as two pieces but turned out to be only one when we got back home. Looked completely different from depicted picture in menu. Just a piece of bone mostly. Never picks up phone and cited ridiculous reason when brought it up. Very disappointing since we had high hopes and hope they learn from these feedbacks. read more

In fact its a good change to the overly spicy Indian food in and around Fremont. 3 Stars - for the Food 2 missing stars - for the smell that hits you when u walk in there. Owner if you are reading this, I don't mean to shoot you guys down but please, you are food establishment. Your store has to smell of food.. not stink of some weird smell. This has happened both times I went in there to pick up my food. The odor is terrible. It just puts you off when u enter. I always choose wait outside of your store for my food to be ready. Ordered chicken roast , paratha, and fish chop. It was a take out. Chicken dish was cold. Seemed like they microwaved it just before packing. Flavor was awful. I am confused whether I was eating a veg dish. Owner said it's one of their favorites. Found seeds of bitter melon in the dish. Paratha was made of white beached flour. It became rubbery and difficult to chew after couple minutes. Big let down as I visited this place before. They should taste everything before dishing it out. read more

Ordered some to go food, the staff had serious attitude issue. Doesn't understand how paramount importance it is to server customers waiting for pick up. He spent 10 mins talking to a confused person in phone but won't bother prioritizing in person customers waiting for pick up. They deserve to be closed during covid-19 days and can reopen post covid-19 as they don't look like following covid-19 protocols. read more

As a Bengali writing a review for a Bengali restaurant, I wanted to point out that most Bengali households have their own micro-variations of iconic menu items such as Hilsa with Mustard and Goat Rezala, two items we ordered for lunch at Bongo's recently. While they were both delicious by themselves, they were not quite what I was expecting. For example, I had expected the Hilsa to be drier (more mustard paste than gravy) and the Rezala sauce to have more of a yogurt base. It might make sense to look at what the "majority preconceived notion" is for various dishes (kind of market research) and tailor accordingly if not done already. It is a small restaurant with limited seating, but the decor is quite tasteful and has improved since I last visited. I thought the wait staff was friendlier as well, but this could be because I had limited interaction prior to this, ordering over the website and picking up the food when ready. read more
