The price for food was reasonable - comparable to Idly Express or Mylapore. The food was OK - I felt that everything was made bland. The sambar lacked flavor, so was the curry. The Kurma was good but the remaining items were just too bland for me, hence 3 stars. The food needs more flavor and kick. We went to Madras Idli Kadai after playing badminton at the nearby Synergy courts. It was pretty quiet on a Monday afternoon at around 1.30pm. They had thali and mini thali specials going on for lunch both very reasonably priced at $13.95. Our group mostly got Thalis and one mini thali (all mini thali items are a part of the thali, except bisebilebhat). The portion size was generous with several items; easily sufficient for one. They were kind enough to accommodate minor substitutions. I asked for the white rice to be replaced with an extra chapati which they allowed. The taro stir fry was a highlight. Also enjoyed the pineapple Kesari which was not too sweet or oily/fatty. The rasam packed quite a punch and the other sides were mild as expected. The mini thali had the bisebilebhat which my friend really enjoyed. They offered 2 refills for any curries in the thali. The staff was friendly and the place was generally clean and not noisy. We also tried their mini filter coffee ($2.25) which we enjoyed post meal. Overall, great value for money - authentic and mild Indian food! 4.5/5 rounded up. read more

The staff seemed disorganized, and it wasn't clear who to approach for help. Seating isn't ideal for takeout either. As for the food, I wasn't too impressed. Some dishes lacked flavor, and a few were soggy. I don't remember all the specific items, but overall it didn't leave much of an impression. I should note I'm not the biggest fan of Indian cuisine, so this might be more enjoyable for someone who is. We got there around 3 pm and spent a wonderful 2 hours reminiscing about the good old days, and also caught up on family, career, and health. All while sipping on MIK's famous Madras Coffee ($3.95) and nibbling on punugulu (fried idli batter) and mix veg pakora, served with their tasty coconut, peanut, and tomato chutneys (both $9.95). I would've given 3.5 stars overall if yelp allowed half stars instead of 3. Service was friendly but efficient while ambience is a notch above " hole in the wall" kinda place. We lucked out as we realized they had a South Indian brunch buffet, which we didn't know till we got inside. Food overall was 3.5 with the highlight as follows: Idli was soft and large and medu vada large yet crisp. Pongal was also tasted great almost a bit creamy. All three get 4/5 for taste and freshness. The masala vada was crisp but a bit cold. Upma was also ok. The three items that fell short of what would otherwise have been a 4 star food experience were the suji halwa, the idiappam and the bonda. For a south India restaurant (most usually get the suji halwa right - think Saravana Bhavan), the halwa was too sweet. The idiappam was too cold and the bonda was kept by the dessert so we expecting it to be sweet, but it was savory (though taste wise it was still ok) The thing about buffet is you need to keep the food warm, but with items like medu vada and masala vada, if you keep them warm over a flame for a while they lose they their crisp texture so it's a bit of a tight rope walk... Overall though definitely worth going if you're craving South Indian food variety sans dosas. read more

We came here on a Sunday for lunch. Parking was plentiful as the restaurant is located in a complex. Right as we entered we were told we could sit anywhere. This location is definitely a lot bigger than the Pleasanton one. We did notice it was not as clean as our table and the booth had a few stains on them and needed to be wiped down. We ordered and appreciated that the food came promptly. We got the set dosa, benne dosa with masala, and the mega combo that comes with idli, vadha, upma, and Pongal. All 3 dishes came with sambar and 3 chutneys. The sambar was on the spicy end so we weren't able to enjoy that with our food. The benne dosa was also quite spicy and the inside was lined with a spicy powder. We have had this before and it usually comes pretty mild or we would have definitely specified! The set dosa was good but a bit on the oilier side. My favorite was the upma and Pongal. This spot is mostly self service. They give you a jug of water and a few glasses and you pay upfront at the register. If you need anything, you can definitely get someone's attention but they are mostly focused on getting orders in. But for the first half hour that we were there, there was only one lady handling everyone, and it just got more and more busy and it was obvious that she was overwhelmed. Another guy stepped in to help, but still I noticed that the fresh and hot dosa/poori were sitting on the kitchen counter waiting to be served to the table. So good was ready but no manpower to deliver them to the table. Highly recommend hiring more staff if you know weekends are going to be busy! Service affects everything else. Mixed Rice: Bisibelebath & Curd rice - there is scope for improvement here. Taste could be better. Kaara Kozhambu - Thali Highlight - Delicious and rightly spiced. If you want to know what customer service is , please visit this restaurant and Mr. Srini the managing partner is a prime example of it. He is so friendly and his hospitality is amazing. Me and my wife went to try out their weekend veetu soru special and especially Chettinadu Paruppu Urundai Kuzhambu. Since we went bit late, they were short of the dish but Srini obliged and made sure we got to savour it. True to its name , it was very homely and the meal was like how our mom's prepare at home. It was so comforting and no complaints about any dish. 100 out of 5 for their food quality. As a Chennai guy, I felt like having home cooked meals and highly recommend to try. It was a nice place when it opened last year. Good menu. Decent service. Reasonable prices. Now, it's an unkempt, absolutely filthy and disgusting place. Tables are grimy and slimy. Went in last week to be greeted by dirty plates on tables and food scraps that had t been cleaned up!! If this is the level of cleanliness in the front of the house I can't imagine what the kitchen and food storage areas might look like. Truly disappointing to see a total lack of respect for basic cleanliness and hygiene. This place is a public health hazard. I was hoping they would become a magnet for local patronage and become a place we could meet up frequently. Kind of a third place. We had dinner last night at the Fremont location of Madras Idli Kadai, which has been open for a couple of weeks. Since it was the weekend, we called ahead and reserved a table for 10. Even though it was busy, we were seated within 10 minutes. However, the cleanliness was lacking--the sofa seats had noticeable oil smudges, and the washroom was even dirtier. We ordered the ghee podi idli, ghee podi thatte idli, ghee podi mini idli, ghee podi masala dosa, curry leaf dosa, onion chili rava masala dosa, rose milk, mango lassi, and Madras filter coffee. While the ghee podi masala dosa and idlis were enjoyable, the curry leaf dosa was overly salty, and the rava masala dosa was disappointingly dry--definitely not something I would recommend. On the plus side, the food was served quickly, and I appreciated their prompt service. Overall, the experience was just okay for me, and I've had better dosas and idlis elsewhere. read more

Definitely a place to AVOID. This was my second visit, and the experience was even worse than the first. The service was terrible. The restaurant wasn't busy at all--only about three families were dining--but the waiter just stood around doing nothing. We waited almost 8 minutes without any attention, and I was already telling my wife we should wait two more minutes and then leave. We ordered a regular dosa, kothu parotta, and idli. The food quality was very poor. The podi dosa was especially bad--the powder was just sprinkled on top, not sticking to the dosa at all, and kept falling off. My son had a really hard time eating it. What upset me the most was the lack of hygiene. The same person was cleaning tables and serving food. Although I noticed him changing gloves a few times, he didn't do it consistently. Even worse, the chef (or "master") was not wearing a head cover and kept touching and pulling his hair while cooking. I highly doubt he washed his hands after that. One of the best places to visit for a sumptuous South Indian meal, dosas and idlis. Great service and ambiance! I loved the size of each dosa and the overall serving quantity in every dish. It's totally worth every buck. We tried the Madurai Malli Dosa which has a green chutney smeared inside, and an Andhra Karam Masala Dosa which is slightly on the spicier side. We love spicy! Ghee Podi Idlis were super soft and delicious to the core with the toppings they offered. Filter Coffee is a must-try. They have speciality dosas as well like Adai Dosa, Raagi Dosa and Pesarattu. We especially requested a small onion tomato chilli uttapam just to taste, but you'll get two large ones when you order. The chutneys and sambhar are authentic and taste amazing! I would give this place zero stars if I could. I ordered a raagi dosa, which came after 20 min and was half uncooked and very thick. When I told the server about it, and asked them to change for a different dosa, I was told the cook is making it again. It came after another 25 min and was thicker than the previous one and very tasteless. The customer service is terrible, no one came to ask how the second dosa was. They shouldn't put a dish on the menu that they can't make. Please save your time and money and go to another South Indian restaurant in the area. Will never return. read more
