Sorry! I have to give 1 star to this restaurant. Last night we went for dinner at Bongo's and had a horrible experience. I wonder how come it got so many good reviews. We ordered Sorshe Ilish, mughlai parota. Sorshe Ilish gravy had such a strong haldi flavor that we can't eat the gravy at all. We only ate fish, so that it is not wasted. Mughlai parota was too much oily, we ate only two slices and discarded the other two. They gave rice which reminded me of street-side Kolkata ghumtis where these type of rice was served at very cheap price for labors. Only good thing we had was misti doi. We had to fill our stomach with parota and misti doi. The ambiance was horrible, reminded me of the tea stalls in our hostel life. I would NEVER go to this place again!!! read more

My brother & I have been looking for Bagladeshi style biriyani for a while in the bay area and we finally found our place. Been here twice so far. First time came on a Friday and tasted the kachhi biryani (which is available only on Friday though). The ambience of this place is very casual and lackluster. We went in on a Saturday afternoon and the place was relatively empty. There aren't too many tables but since the place was sort of empty we were immediately seated. We ordered Fish chop(fish croquettes), Shorshe Ilish(Hilsa fish in a mustard gravy), rice, Shukti Begun Bhuna(spicy dried fish with eggplant) and mishti doi(sweet yogurt dessert). The food tasted quite ordinary. The spicy dried fish was extremely oily. The mustard curry was oily too. The fish tasted fine. The Croquettes were fine. They serve free tea with the meals. Loved the place, the friendly service and the homey atmosphere. No fuss, but awesome finger licking food. Fish curry (islish sorshe) and Egg chicken roll is really good, must try (5/5). Misti Doi and Chicken roast are good (4/5). Mughlai Paratha is deep fried item which is too much oily and did not taste that good (2/5). Service is good and you can enjoy the food with the complementary tea. Do NOT go here. Such a ripoff! Horrible experience! I am a Bengali person and went to Bongo's with so much excitement to have finally find a Bengali restaurant in the bay area. Let me tell you, it was an utter disappointment. I ordered kachi biriyani ($14.99) pabda dopiaji ($10.99) dudh chitoy pitha ($4.99) to go. They charged me $14.99 for biriyani that came with one giant piece of goat bone (not edible) and a giant potato. It was so dry and lacked flavor. It was awful and tasteless. Biriyani should also come with lime, onions, chilli pepper and salad. They provided nothing. Dudh citoy pitha was NO good, overly sweet, pitha piece burned, and super runny tasteless gravy. To go order, they should have at least supplied napkins, and plastic fork etc. They provided nothing. All dishes were over priced and tasteless. The service staff never asked if my order was OK. The place was very loud where you can hear the kitchen staff arguing and microwave door shutting loud in the background. Bad ambience. read more

Aah...Bengali cuisine, albeit from the Bangladeshi side of the fence..you remind me of childhood, and long forgotten flavors..I grew up all over the world, but there's nothing like some traditional Bengali fish curry and rice to take me back to memories of my mother's cooking. The last Bengali restaurant I ate at in the Bay Area lasted about a year. I hope this one lasts. They have great, small batch, fresh food. Loved the short menu - that means they make few and fresh items. I didn't mind they didn't have the chicken roast..though I suggest they skip on menus and just use a nice signboard a la hipster eateries. Also, I didn't hear microwave dings - always a good sign - the chicken biryani was perfect - very delicately flavored, and not doused in spices, chilies, and all kinds of greasy stuff so commonly found in Indian/Pakistani restaurants. Instead it was whole spices (cardamom, saffron, cloves, bay leaves), saffron-ghee rice, and very lightly flavored chicken in mild gravy. Meat was fresh. All just like mom used to make. Rosogollas - just like home made. Delicious, sweet steamed balls of ricotta cheese heaven. Mishtoi doi -nom nom...delicious sweet thick-like Greek yogurt (all not so good for my waistline) I didn't care for the moglai paratha - it had a pastry crust, vs. a true paratha wrapping. But that could be the Bangladeshi way. It tasted delicious, though. Fish chops...omg..delicious, albeit a little too chili-hot for my liking. The tamarind chutney with it was so good, though. I personally like places with small menus, and that make small batches, and run out (like my favorite Santa Ramen in San Mateo), vs. tons of food going from the freezer to the microwave. This is the only Bengali Cuisine restaurant in Bay area. I have checked this place twice and liked the food. I ordered Chicken Biriyani (Morog Polao), Roshogolla on my first visit and it was really good. It's the exact Morog Polao you will find in Bangladesh. And the Roshogolla, just wow!! This kind of Roshogolla is famous in Khulna, Jessore. Highly recommended to try. It was their grand opening, so they were not offering full menu so decided to try again next day. On my second visit, ordered Polao, Shrimp malai curry and ruhi fish curry. Reallly liked the fish curry. Very fresh and full of flavor. Polao was also good. I was expecting bigger shrimp but still it was good. The amount of food they give is pretty good. Two people can eat the order I made. YMMV. This is a very small restaurant. They have few tables placed inside. But you can sit outside. I like the ambience of the restaurant, there is a big flag of Bangladesh and some small photos representing culture of Bangladesh. They also play Bangladeshi popular music, so people from Bangladesh will definitely like that. Overall I give 5 star for the food. read more

This is a really good place to find good Indian (Bengali) food. This gives a good "bang for the buck". This place serves authentic Bangladeshi cuisine. This restaurant is a family run joint, and the interior decorated with a little touch of Bangladesh. From appetizer to dessert you can find a variation of taste with each bite. We had Palau, Chicken Roast, and Shorshe Ilish in our main course. All of them tested like homemade authentic Bangladeshi food. I will highly recommend their "SHORSHE ILISH"(Hilsha Fish (ILISH) which is a National Fish of Bangladesh cooked in yellow mustard gravy). It was delicious and nicely cooked in an authentic style. For our dessert, we had "MISHTI DOI" (A traditional Bangladeshi sweet yogurt). It tasted as good our Bangladeshi sweet shops. I have already become a repeated customer here for its authentic Bangladeshi food. Unless you cook at home yourself, you can't get such good in Bay Area! I like Muglai Porota, my son likes goat resale and Polao (me too) and my wife likes mosh to doi and roshogolla! They have inside and outside seating arrangements. I've tried Bangledishi food in multiple places and I've never been a big fan of this kind of food but this restaurant made me love the taste of authentic Bangledishi cuisine. I would say it is the best out of all the Bangledishi restaurants i've been to. I went in for soft opening and it was very welcoming. The people are very friendly and easy to talk to. I tried Shingara and Mishti Doi and those are a must try! The food is delicious and very affordable. I'm really looking forward to their grand opening! read more
