This is the very first time I've tried Korean porridge and I'm very impressed how good their porridges are! We ordered the Abalone porridge and the Crab meat porridge. Both are delicious! The moment the waitress put down the tray on our table, the smell of the seaweed goes right into my nose, triggering my mouth to water. The texture of the porridge is thick, very soul-comforting. I felt bad of course so I decided to get her some jook because Korean girls love jook and jook makes everything better. I dunno why or how but it just does...based on Korean drama. I also had to look good in front of her family so I bought jook for her whole family. Smh. Anyways. This is a good jook place if you can't boil rice and cut up chicken at home jk. Once you've had Bonjuk in one location, you've had them everywhere. This Korean porridge chain is 100% consistent on taste and presentation in all their locations wether its in Korea or US. Whenever I want to be nice to my body, I come here to have a healthy meal. I have the non spicy choices when I want to be completely healthy and the spicy ones when I don't. The food was really good, healthy and delicious, especially since they don't use MSG. I found the juk to be a little bland, but that's nothing a little spice can't fix. My dish ran me about $16, which I find a little pricey for porridge but it does hit the spot when you're feeling a bit under the weather. We ordered the sea ear porridge (which is abalone). The porridge here is much denser than the chinese version. The juk was top with a little bit of crush black sesame seeds and some pine nuts. Itfor 16.00 its a big bowl and can be shared between 2 people. Comes with sides (kimchi, shredded beef, pickle ginger and pickle daicon juice) The abalone was cut up in little pieces, blends well with the juk and just big enough for you to feel them in your mouth. Jangjorim (small little meat dish) had a weird smell/taste to it. I'm Korean and I know what jangjorim is supposed to taste like, and that wasn't it. Eaten there before and it never tasted like that. #4. One spoon though I ordered 2 dishes. Not sure what the little ol' lady's problem was but it left a sour taste in my mouth. Off the beaten path of Flushing and located farther away from Main St. on Northern Blvd (few doors down from the old BCD tofu house) is this excellent Korean congee place. Portions are huge and prices are steep, and comes with a few tiny/very simple dishes of banchans. However, you can tell that the ingredients are high quality (and real stuff in it!) unlike certain watery Chinese congees. And if you think congees are bland and boring, you are wrong here! These congees are thick and super flavorful - look at some of the pictures, they are dark orange colors! Both the kimchi and chicken flavors that we ordered were excellent, and yes we each almost finished that one huge bowl. This place is also super clean, quiet and calm. The first time I went to Bon Juk was 10 yrs ago. I was visiting Korea, ate some street food, and had gastroenteritis x 1 week. I went to the hospital, got a shot in the buttock, and ate Bon Juk to nurse me back to health. Last month, I had my second bout of gastroenteritis. I went to the hospital, got IV fluids, medications to keep food down and up... Went to Bon Juk and the abalone juk once again nursed me back to health. this place is such a gem for the winter time. I've been here three times in the past two months. I've tried the bulgogi, kimchi with octopus and kimchi with pollack. the kimchi with octopus is by far my favorite. it is the most flavorful of the ones I've tried and has a good kick. the other flavors were subtle and can get bland after downing a whole bowl of the same thing. I was under anesthesia for a procedure and was told to have liquid food, and all I could think of was going to Bonjuk. They have a variety of jook/juks. A bit steep of a price for "juk" but being served in this "zen-like" porridge house is a worthy experience! They are specialized in porridge and only serve this with some banchan, or side dishes. However, there is a wide selection of ingredients for your juk - you can choose octopus, chicken, beef, abalone, etc. My favorite is "hobakjuk", pumpkin porridge that also contains mochi and red bean. This place specializes in Korean rice porridge (Juk) and has a number of varieties with meat, seafood and or vegetables. For those not familiar with Juk, think congee on steroids. I had the octopus kimchi Juk and was pleased as I was in the mood for spicy. I think, though, that you can go with any Juk that appeals to you and just eat it with the kimchi that comes with the banchan. The only place i would go to in LOS ANGELES for JUK (rice porridge) I have tried a few but i always come back to BON Juk. They have free parking in the rear. The staff is very friendly. I have tried almost all the variations of JUK. All pretty good. Keep in mind it takes them a little bit of time to get your order together as they make it in the back. take out is at least 10-15 minutes from the time you call your order. The restaurant is clean and has a contemporary decor. Classical music was playing soothingly in the background. It was not very busy on the Wednesday night when we dined there. We were quickly seated and cups of hot barley tea were served. We decided to order the bulgogi and octopus porridge, as well as the mixed seafood porridge. These came with small side dishes of kimchi, flavouring paste, shredded beef, and a garlic onion radish cold soup. The bulgogi octopus porridge was delicious and was more flavourful than the mixed seafood porridge. Apparently they have dessert porridge too but we didn't order this. Growing up in a Chinese family, jook (congee) was always on the stove any time someone was sick. I was recently feeling under the weather and was really craving some juk - (Korean porridge), though I've never had it before. I had just seen a video on Youtube about a Youtuber eating at a Korean porridge restaurant in LA. That's what inspired my craving, so I set out to look for a place that served juk in the city. After a quick google search, I found Bonjuk and also discovered it's a chain, the same chain the Youtuber I watched went to in LA. Hooray! My friends and I came in late afternoon. The restaurant was pretty empty. The whole place radiated a calm, zen vibe, from the colors of the walls, to the plushness of the seats, to the classical background music. The menu is all about porridge. The price ranges from $11-17, depending on what flavor you get. I ordered the samgae (chicken and ginseng) porridge. It came on a tray with three side dishes and a clear radish broth. The sides were small in quantity, but very flavorful. I believe they are intended to be added into the porridge to give it more flavor. We each received a small side of kimchi, soy sauce flavored shredded beef, and spicy pickled radish. The radish broth had a couple pieces of radish and was sour and garlicky tasting. It gave off a cooling effect when eaten with the steaming hot porridge. I thoroughly enjoyed my porridge. It was on the light side, but it was the perfect comfort food. In addition to rice, the base was also made up of mini chunks of carrot and scallions. Because I ordered the chicken and ginseng porridge, mine included hearty chunks of chicken. I loved how they top each of their porridge with seaweed powder and sesame seeds for another flavor dimension. Overall, I was extremely satisfied with our lunch at Bonjuk. While the prices are considered high for porridge, they do not skimp on quantity or quality. With so many other Korean restaurants in the area, it's easy to overlook a place like Bonjuk, but I guarantee it'll quickly become your winter go-to once you give it a try! read more

I came here to try to vegetarian congee, it was absolutely yummy!! I told her I was a vegetarian which she suggested the vegetable congee, but when she brought out my meal I noticed the extras - kimchi (normally made with fish broth) and thinly sliced beef haha but it's ok...I just didn't eat it. The bowl WAS HUGE, I was able to eat most of it and that left me feeling really full along with 2 cups of tea/water to add to the fullness. I live a street away from Bonjuk and I was always skeptical about spending $10-20 on congee. Congee is usually priced at around $5-10 and it already taste amazing. I gave it a try since it was getting cold and there was nothing to eat at home. I was worried that take-out would be less of an experience and the food wouldn't be as great, but it was delicious! I ordered the Beef and Vegetable jook/juk ($14.07 after tax). Portions were pretty big even though I was still able to finish it on my own in one sitting, there were generous amount of meat in the congee, and the texture is perfect, not watered-down and not too-thick. The side dishes offered really added to the taste of the congee, but I was given really little (about a bite of each). Overall, it was worth a try but it is on the pricier end for a simple meal like congee. read more

This restaurant is in the northern heart of korean Flushing. Compared to its drab neighbors, the restaurant looks quite contemporary and clean. I had the Abalone Juk and it was very good! The only recommendation I have for the owners is that they open up a location in Manhattan. It is tough to get to this restaurant by subway, and in our current comfort cuisine craze. korean style congee would do very well. Love the kimchi squid jook. I get it for any of my family members when they're sick. I get two, one for them and one for me. One portion is huge so it can be another snack/meal. They take cash only. They have a small parking lot to the left of their left adjoining store. I usually park on the side streets where it's residential so I can avoid the street parking on Northern. I usually call before I leave to place the order and it's ready by the time I arrive. But sitting in is a treat too, clean and they play classical music. This time around I asked if I could get more of the side dishes and she looked at me like of course and packed me some more. I took someone's advice once and started mixing in all the side dishes into the jook. I guess it'd work really well with non-spicy dishes but with already spicy dish it's saltier. I should stop but now I'm hooked. I keep meaning to try other ones but when I'm there, I crave the kimchi squid. And by the time you're done, you're just way too full. There are a variety of different types of porridge and they all look delicious. Since I couldn't eat anything with a lot of seasoning I tried the veggie and the sweet pumpkin (one of my favorites) porridge and both were amazing. The food is not too salty and the portions are very generous. It's the next best thing to homemade-maybe even better. There are a lot of different flavors and options for the soup dish and we decided to get the ginseng chicken and spicy kimchee octopus. They were both pretty good. I liked the ginseng chicken a little more than the spicy kimchee but no complaints. Each dish comes with a little assortment of korean appetizer dishes.
