I took my son, my husband and my son's friend for dinner. I felt like crabs and wings and that's what I got. The wings came hot hot and crispy. Unfortunately there was a problem with the refrigerator for the blue claws but I got the dugeness crab and it was delicious. My son had crab legs. My husband had wings and fish and chips and my sons friend had calamari and a crab cake sandwich. We loved everything and there happened to be quizzo when we showed up so we ate and played. I tried a few different beers and liked the cider, I didn't love the IPA. The bartender made me a mixed drink that I loved too. The boss but free credits in the jukebox for us to play some music and let us know what happenings they have during the week. We had a great time. So glad we decided to stop in today for dinner as we hadn't been here before. It's crazy because I live five minutes away! I got a Buffalo chicken cheesesteak. It wasn't traditional Buffalo sauce flavor which I love but it was very good and did the job (the job=made my face hot and glasses fog up a little lol). My boyfriend ordered a cheesesteak hoagie. We split Bonks fries. Everything was very good. Both bartenders (the shift switched while we were there) were so attentive and friendly! Had a really great brunch at Bonks this past weekend. Service was good, and food was even better. They have a large. menu, accommodating food preferences for the vegetarians and carnivores alike. The one thing I really appreciate about Bonks is their continued appreciation and homage to seafood being a part of their menu, given such a significant culture for Port Richmond. I tried their white fish sandwich, which was really tasty. It is heavy - so be warned, you will not need to order anything else with this, but really rich and smoked fish, topped with bacon, tomato, onions to add some savory cut to the dish. We also tried their breakfast quesadilla and breakfast tots - while these aren't necessarily any dishes with flare, they are executed REALLY well. Simple, but the quality of food you would go back to for brunch every weekend. Not to mention, their bloody mary was solid. Happened to be in the neighborhood picking up an auto part and did a search for Oysters and Bonks popped up. Glad we decided to try it. First off, the bartender took car of our table, she didn't miss a beat with any of her customers. Super friendly! We tried the pulled pork nachos as our appetizer, they come in a huge bowl, tons of cheese and pulled pork, even the lower layer. My wife got the Seafood Boil and I tried the Bonk Burger. Bonk's Bar is my new jawn! With new owners (the same owners, I am told, as the storied Grey Lodge) everything vastly improved and I am loving this neighborhood gem. Tuesday nights are my fave, quizzo with Jack is always a great time. The food is great bar food and seafood as well. Crab legs never disappoint and they usually have a seafood boil or seafood pasta situation on special. Bonks fries with cheese are tits as well. Had dinner here with a few friends last night. Our friends told us there was outdoor seating but there isn't. When we got there and looked confused the bartender offered to bring a table outside and set it up for us if we felt uncomfortable eating inside. We decided to eat inside since it wasn't busy or crowded at all and there was plenty of space. Very nice gesture by the bartender though. Food was surprisingly good. We ordered bang bang shrimp, cheesesteak egg rolls and calamari for apps and I got a pound of snow crab in a delicious Maryland-style sauce, my fiancé got a bomb burger and our friends got a chicken sandwich, Italian beef sandwich with a dip and a Buffalo chicken cheesesteak. Everything was really good and we did NOT leave hungry Good beer on tap too including several IPA and ales. The vibe is chill, doesn't look like much on the outside but definitely your typical neighborhood bar where people like to hang out. We will be back! read more

Bonk's is a local's local bar. Came here for an Eagles game one Sunday, the place was filled with lifers from around Port Richmond, customers and employees. We came for crabs. #1 blues were about 7 dollars each. There was a special on for what they called rock crab, at two for 4 dollars. These crabs came cleaned and split. They had the same shape and flavor as a dungeness crab, except smaller and with black tipped claws. I can tell these came in frozen and reheated, but they were good nevertheless. Blue crabs are served dirty (whole, delicious "mustard" and all) with or without a pool of Bonk's juice; a briny, spicy boiling liquid that sends the sea bugs to their graves. Then they were all washed down with dollar pints of Bud Light (shitty light beer is the only beer to have with crabs). And to top it off, the fries stay impossibly crisp forever. No joke. Maybe the lukewarm crabs when served were an issue, but I can't remember. All I can recall is a bright white light followed by shell fragments everywhere. read more

From the outside this place may seem like just a corner bar, but it's so much more. In addition to a great drink selection, the food is also quite good. The servers are quick, attentive, funny, and very personable. I had the opportunity of going to a whiskey dinner night with some friends and although I'm not much of a whiskey drinker, the dinner was delicious, and it was fun to learn about the origins of whiskey along with getting several samples. It was a very enjoyable night, which I'm told they will be continuing to do on occasion (I highly recommend). Whether you're looking for a fun spot to stop and grab a drink, or do a full dinner- Bonks is a great option in the port Richmond area. Oh and try the crab Mac and cheese. This is our Sunday tradition spot. I love this place and will continue to patronize this place. The food is amazing, the bartenders are amazing and I just love the atmosphere. I always order the Chicken Nachos. They're a meal for me. The chips are like no other, seasoned to perfection. Their Bonks fries are delicious and the wings are juicy and flavorful. Last night Monday Night Football Devours came from the Bully Port Richmond section of the City of Philadelphia. @bonkscrabs have been a Port Richmond Favorite and last night I found out why! The service was fun; the bartender was a great spirit; and they bathrooms are clean! They are well known and respected for their Crabs . They serve Alaskan snow, Dungeness, and my favorite Maryland Blue claws! You can pick from four different broth/sauces for whichever type of crab you choose; and you can also get them "Dirty" or "Clean". Last night, I turned it up a notch. I ordered the Maryland Blues with their old bay and sweet garlic sauce. The Crabs were a really nice size for this time of year, and they were soooo juicy! The Crab meat was really sweet. The sauce was absolutely delightful and worth drinking . This is about to be my new Monday night football spot for sure! Been here twice: The good - Very comfortable atmosphere and the entire joint has been remodeled nicely. - The Irish bartender is very efficient and he did a great job of handling the bar AND the dining area. - The mussels in red, bang-bang cauliflower, chicken quesadillas and the fried oysters were all excellent! The bad - I get that they're trying to attract a certain type of clientele, but this place is pretty pricey. Plan on spending some bucks if you come here. - The bread pudding sucked. I figured if it's the only dessert being featured, it must be really good ... I was wrong. - Chicken sandwiches were underwhelming. Burger was so-so. Scoats has done it again! I visited this place with some friends on a Saturday evening, around 6PM. We were greeted by a very friendly bartender (I believe his name was Bobby) who quickly took our drink order. As for food, we ordered quite a bit of the menu items because we wanted to try a little bit of everything, and we were absolutely famished. I am pretty obsessed with the platter - I think it was called the Pol-Richmond Platter - It has keilbasa from Swiacki's, pierogi from Czerw's, and some of the best sauerkraut I've ever had. The pierogi filling also rotates, That alone will bring me back over and over again! Some other stars were the fried cauliflower, the seasoned french fries with dipping sauce (which are 1,000 times better than Chickie's & Pete's, by the way), and those wonderful cheesesteak egg rolls with sriracha ketchup dipping sauce. Man oh man, their food is damn good. As it is with any of Scoats' spots, the beer selection was on point and had something for everyone. The prices were just right, the decor is beautiful and perfectly suited to the neighborhood, and Bobby's service was very enjoyable. Sticky, licky, sucky, messy, dirty and wet. There is something better than sex for sale in Port Richmond, and no, it's not heroin. Bonk's crabs. Blue crabs in insanely spicy briny murky seawater were the best I've had in Philly. They were delivered less than hot, which irked me straight off, but were so tasty I forgave it. Fries were crisp and well-seasoned, with a side of melted white cheese that smoothed out the hot heat of the crab broth. Wings were good, of the well-done school. Not the best thing on the table, but respectable. Deep-fried beer battered crab nuggets were hot grease perfection, dipped in a side of tartar sauce. Dinner for three with a beer each, four jumbo $8 crabs and many fried basket things was $23 each. Better than sex, but you still need a shower afterwards. read more

Had to right a review tonight . I usually never do. Let me start that I'm from port Richmond and Banks bar always has a place in my heart . When friends of ours wanted to meet here for dinner tonight , I was a little caught of guard but they were coming from bridesburg so if made sense after hearing that . When we got there , the bartender seen us to our seats and told us the specials and shown us the beer specials. She was super nice and very quick with our drinks . We were waiting for friends so we looked at the menu and sat and sipped till they arrived . When they finally arrived they realized that they knew the bartender. It was a friend of theirs niece. We told her how we knew her and it was a cool coincidence. We ordered our food and my family got 4 appetizers and our friends got a loaded nachos I believe , which they loved ,fried pickles and the fried oysters and a pork sandwich which they said was good but they got long hots on it which were too hot for them . I also got the fried oysters . WOW . . Now I got them , and fish and chips , mostly , everywhere I go . Now the fried oysters were amazing . They were more on an appetizer portion , then a meal . But probably top 3 I ever had !! And I order them all the time . Fish and chips were amazing as well . Top 5 ! I was kinda shocked how good it all was honestly . Rest of family had fried raviolis , which they loved ,and I'm missing one more appetizer but I can't remember . Overall experience was awesome ! When we first got there my young daughter was kinda scared because the name said "bar " on it and we were the only ones in there eating when we sat down , but when we left she wanted to know when we were goin to go back . Food , atmosphere, bartender,staff , all A plus . Owner should be proud of his staff . When we were driving home , I mentioned to my daughter that her grandfather once lived in the bar upstairs as a child . My grandparents once owned that bar .Bonks runs deep in my family , even if owners have changed ,it makes me proud that they are continuing there tradition of a neighborhood bar that loves their neighborhood. Small spot with a good pub grub menu. Their draft list could be better I feel but overall they have great food and good staff. We really enjoy their wings. You can choose from buffalo, Cajun rub, rum BBQ and honey Sriracha. Yes honey Sriracha! Some if other favs are the loaded nachos, pork Italiano and Pol Richmond (polish plate with kielbasa & pierogis). They also have specials on crabs daily. Bonks USED to have good crabs, but since they changed hands, their crabs suck & are WAY over-priced. Can't really get good crabs in Philly anymore since Boncela's closed. Damn shame. I know it's winter, but how does a "crab place" NOT HAVE BLUE CRABS???? All they had were snow & king, which we had to settle for. Could've went down the street to another establishment that starts w/ the letter B & gotten blue points..........also, here's a question.......HOW DOES A BAR RUN OUT OF DRAFT MILLER LITE, arguably the most popular beer on the planet?? (They did have bottle & cans, but that's not what we wanted!!) NOTE: There were 3 taps out of commission on HOCKEY SATURDAY, not just Miller Lite!! There are how many beer distributors in Philadelphia that they could've gotten a keg or 2out of ? Inexcusable.........Also, 2 of our party left early & put $20 on our table to help defray the cost of the check; the rest of us went outside to smoke, & lo & behold, when we went back, the $20 was gone.....my buddy inquired to our waitress as to where the twenty went, & it materialized in her shirt pocket. "I didn't want anyone to walk away w/ it" was our response. Well, we weren't leaving, so did she think this was a tip? And, the service was atrocious. SSSSSLLLLLOOOOOOWWWWW as hell. Really wasn't that crowded, & it's bar food......our 1st order of food took some time,(and it was average a @ best) but I ordered a 2nd order of snow crabs, & they took 1/2 an hour to arrive. Crabs take 10 minutes, & that's tops, & the crowd had thinned by then, so what the hell took so long? Overall, I was glad I got to see old friends,& maybe it was just a bad day, but too many inexcusable things happened; I figured I would give them another shot, but after all this, you won't see me here anymore. My husband and I were in the mood for crabs and heard about Bonk's. We drove an hour to get there and were happy to see that the place was nice. We ordered the crab bisque and steamed clams and the Jumbo Crabs @ $8 each. The bisque was quite tasty, not great, but good enough. As soon as we saw the clams we ordered we thought uh oh. They were those cheap white clams that come from the very polluted China waters. We thought a place that supposedly is known for seafood would serve top necks or little necks, not those cheap clams from China sold in Asian supermarkets. And we were equally disappointment with their crabs! The crabs were at best medium and light in weight and had zero flavor. If you are going to have a crab for a logo and charge $8 each, you should really have great crabs. We eat crabs all the time and we consider ourselves connasieurs. But these crabs were out and out awful. I would never go back here, not because of the crabs, but because they had the audacity to serve white clams from China. read more

Just up Richmond Street from Port Richmond Books is BONK'S BAR, as the stark black-on-white square sign proclaims. Heard that Mike "Scoats" Scotese (of Grey Lodge and Sawtown Tavern fame) had taken over management of this place, that had slipped considerably after the original Bonks let go of it. It's had a proper going over--the pressed-tin ceiling has been cleaned up, everything else is just a touch brighter, and there is now a solid selection of micro-brews alongside the BudMillerCoorsLight stuff. We did NOT try the crabs on this visit, but a cream of mushroom soup, nice shoestring fries, and a good, crusty roll and butter made for a quick, delicious stop. The waitress was on point, knew her beers, and everybody we met there was nice to talk to. It's always great to see a tavern being revived, without a single fern in sight.
