We ordered take out from here. The food was hot and packaged well. I had the shrimp szechuan and my wife had the beef szechuan. Our meals came with a large portion of white rice. Everything was fresh and the beef was tender. Will definitely be back when in Rocksprings!. read more

Just about anywhere else, and I would give Bonsai 3 stars. But, we are in Rock Springs, WY, which is a very small town. So...we'll go with 4 stars. The fact that you can get this food out here is fantastic all by itself. The sign says Sushi and Chinese cuisine. The staff are definitely Chinese (I could hear them speaking to each other), and the menu is comprised of sushi rolls along with Chinese soups and stir fry dishes. I ordered edamame, several nigiri sushi pieces, and a couple of rolls. I can eat massive amounts of sushi, and this was about the right amount of food for me. The sushi was pretty good. The rice was a bit harder than I like, but not terrible. The fish tasted fresh, but I thought the rolls I ordered were a little heavy on the imitation crabmeat. Service was very good, and the staff was attentive. It goes without saying that this isn't a primo sushi spot by any means, but it's a decent place to get your sushi fix in Rock Springs. read more

Bonsai deserves a 5/5 for exceeding expectations. I was expecting very little from a sushi bar in the middle of Wyoming, but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. We ordered the ahi poki appetizer, edamame, the pink fire sushi roll, and the cashew chicken. The edamame was fine. The cashew chicken was fine. But...both the ahi poki and pink fire roll were delicious. The ahi tuna is served sashimi-style mixed with jalapeño and onion. Really good stuff. The pink fire roll had tuna, shrimp, and jalapeño and was deep-fried quickly for a crispy exterior. I don't end up in Rock Springs frequently, but when I do, I'll eat at Bonsai. read more

Bonsai is pretty much a hidden gem. The building looks like it was an old Pizza Hut from the outside but inside it is very nice and very clean. They were pretty busy when I was there; over half of the tables were full. I ordered a California Roll and the Garlic Chicken. I was bummed they didn't have Moo Goo Gai Pan but most places I've been to out West don't. For being a small town and perhaps the only sushi place within two hours it was pretty good. I guess I expected a simple, classic roll to be really fresh since they roll them at the counter. It was lacking slightly. But, the dinner portions are huge! My plate and the others they brought out were heaping. My meal was good, but I was expecting it to be a bit better overall. I would come here again the next time I visit Rock Springs and next time try the Sesame Chicken (the table next to me said it was good). read more

Sat down and ordered a Cabernet. Obviously there was a bit of language barrier, even though I said it twice, I was brought a Corona instead. Okay, whatever. I figured that I'd be kind and settle with the beer and ask for a Vegas roll while I decided what entrée to order. Even though I asked for the roll well before I ultimately decided on the Hunan Beef, it showed up well in advance but looked and tasted pretty good. The beef was tender with a medium cook and the vegetables had a nice crunchiness however the dish lacked the spiciness that I had hoped for. The Vegas roll looked great but tasted ok. However, for Rock Springs standards, I'd say that it was pretty good. The staff was all friendly and attentive. Would I recommend it? Yes. Will I be back? Most likely, yes. read more

Only tip to the restaurant.... may want to reconsider seating a family with 5 children (under 10 y/o) right next to a couple. Very attentive and friendly servers. I'm not a big fan of Chinese, but my husband is. We visited on a very cold day! I ordered a cup of egg drop soup. It was very good. I also ordered the Asian salad. I normally love Asian salad. However, this one had no mandarin oranges, or crispy noodles. It came with thigh meat. So I didn't eat it. I only eat chicken breast meat. I was very disappointed. Hubby had seafood soup. It turned out to be miso soup with mussels, shrimp, and a couple of scallops. He didn't like the broth at all. Great sushi (the Chinese selections look great as well)! Staff was very friendly and professional, good and service were timely. Honestly, I was extremely impressed to find sushi this good in Wyoming!!! My only complaint is that while freshness of the fish and quality of the sushi was fantastic, a lot of their menu is a little TOO Americanized. Lots of fried options (taste great but not ideal if you're watching your caloric intake) and way too heavy on the sauce. I was not expecting to have sushi in Rock Springs, Wyoming but I did and enjoyed my meal. I started with an order of edamame and an order of crab wontons. They were so fast that I didn't even have time to do my normal eating-alone-social-media check! Edamame was nicely steamed and not over salted, wontons were fried to perfection and didn't skimp on the filling. Also, this place has the goooood sweet and sour sauce; the thick, bright red stuff. I then decided to order a sushi roll and they were really great about accommodating my salmon allergy. My roll came out quick too. It's not the best sushi I've ever had but solid for being inland. The other dishes I saw others order looked great too. The only mark against them was not noticing my glass was empty for quite a while, but other was the service was quick and attentive. We just hit Bonsai at 9:30pm on Saturday night. It wasn't too busy and it was obvious we had missed the rush. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the service was great and amazingly the sushi was excellent. We ordered miso soup, salmon and tuna sushi, a rainbow roll and baked mussels. The salmon and tuna sushi were above excellent; rich in texture, not too cold and served quickly. The Rainbow roll that followed was no less enticing; the white tuna, shrimp used to wrap the roll were just as rich in texture and flavor. Bonsai does not skimp quality on their rolls. Hooray for that. The baked mussels were good but not great. We can only compare baked mussels to those from Namiko's in Denver; they use a specially imported mayonnaise or recipe from Japan that truly sets the mussels as second to none. With that said, the baked mussels were rich in flavor, with a creamy mayonnaise that was slightly spicy. So Bonsai is a great sushi restaurant with great service and great food. Since I'm from Denver, it would rank in the top 3. Great job guys!!! read more

We eat here probably twice a month. It is hands down our absolute favorite sushi, and we've eaten sushi all over the world. Granted it's Americanized sushi - but it is still our favorite. The fire roll and tropical roll are my favorite. It's a little on the pricey side, but the fish has always been very fresh and the rolls are pretty big. Don't hesitate to stop here! read more

Fine. Definitely better than cafeteria/deli/grocery store sushi but not what I'd call "good." Notwithstanding the positive reviews, I still had pretty low expectations, which were exceeded. Two stars due to my wife and son having severe nausea overnight. Two of us were fine so can't necessarily pin it on the sushi but that's the common denominator. read more
