I got off the streetcar, walked down the street, and glimpsed this gelato shop. Now, gelato wasn't on my agenda for the day, but I couldn't resist. So my wife and I walked in and were instantly delighted by the sight of gelato and fun decor. The service was amazing. After trying a majority of the flavors, we settled on two--basically a combo of brownie and caramel goodness. It was incredible. Some of the best gelato I've had in the US. I've walked past many times and when I saw their LONG list of dairy free options, I had to stop in. Sampled the matcha and was hooked! Got it paired with the Mayan Chocolate. The gelato at Bonata Gelato is delicious. The staff lets you sample different flavors before you purchase. The taste is delicate and creamy (little to no ice crystals). There are not many unique flavors, but the few "standard" ones that I tried were well done. I ended up getting the orange blossom and poppy seed, which was very bright and had no acidity. A small container actually holds a lot of volume; they really packed it in! There is a large, indoor, casual sitting area at Bonata, which I love at ice cream places. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but not much different from other local ice cream places. read more

I came across this gelato shop through an online post stating that a famous Bend, OR, gelato establishment had opened a new Portland outpost. So while visiting Portland, I decided to check it out. It was worth the stop. They offer a good variety of flavors and the pricing is very reasonable. I tried their Lime Cream & Raspberry and Orange Blossom & Poppy Seed flavors. Both were unique in taste and had a good flavor profile. The lime cream was tart and the orange blossom was smooth and subtle in taste. Both were creamy. Really excited to see Bonta now in Portland! We had been numerous times out in Bend and finally got the chance to check out their new location. It's actually quite spacious inside and they've done a nice job designing everything. The gelato itself is great and they are generous with the portions which I appreciated. Went with the cookies and cream and strawberry. Will definitely be back more once the warmer months roll around. Our scooper was very nice and offered us numerous samples which is always helpful. A new gelato spot from Bend! Space is big and open. They got a few fun flavors to choose from, some were a miss though. But the ones that are not are the Straccaitella, Orange Cream, and Strawberry! Some of the better gelatos I've had around here. Will definitely be back for more. read more

There are 2 different chocolate flavors here with very different flavor profiles. So if you'd like a more rich and classic profile, I'd go with Salted Chocolate. Mayan chocolate has a spicy aftertaste. The atmosphere is modern with clean lines, yet it still feels warm with mural art in the background. There's ample seating space. Bonata is surprisingly great! With several good ice cream options within Portland, it is hard to differentiate between each. However, Bonata does a good job at being quirky with a story, while offering yummy treats. On my recent trip the the shop, I tried several of the seasonal flavors. I was impressed with the broad range of Italian styles and American options, so anyone who loves cold treats will find something to love here. The waffle cones were soooo yummy, and I really enjoyed the pumpkin pie ice cream. Lemon poppyseed is a close second. Parking is ample, there are both indoor and outdoor seating, and the organization of the space from queuing to seating is well organized. read more

A newer gelato place that opened up in the Pearl area. They took over the old Cosmic Bliss location. I really enjoyed their flavors and have been there twice now. Some of my favorite flavors are their roasted strawberry, brownie + coffee, and peanut butter +fudge. The gelato is very smooth and easy to enjoy. space: spacious, warm & brightly lit, family friendly vibe. located in the pear among many restaurants, breweries and bars, so the introduction of a dessert shop is a nice addition to the neighborhood. staff: super friendly and helpful! i was told about the different flavors available and encouraged to try samples. overall service was informative and amiable, and also smooth & efficient. food: there was a good variety of regular and seasonal options available! there's no novel/distinctive flavors, but still interesting choices beyond the basics, such as "lime cream & raspberry" or "orange blossom & poppy seed", so there's something for everyone! they were able to do a split singles scoop, so i got straciatella and pumpkin pie with cookie crumble. usually i'd get a kids scoop at most ice cream shops because they're too sweet/indulgent, but i didn't have a problem finishing this whole scoop at Bonta because the gelato taste is much lighter and cleaner! some flavors can taste more bland/too light (I've tried the strawberry at my last visit and wasn't wowed, but that could be due to strawberries not being in season?), but if you're looking for not too sweet dessert, definitely consider Bonta Gelato! read more
