First! My family and I have been enjoying BooeyMonger sanwiches for years!!! since the 90's. Today I decided to get a few classic sandwiches . ALL and I mean ALL sandwiches were not the classic taste i'm familiar Booemonger to have. The food was poorly seasoned, overcooked or stale in taste. I tried calling the location 15times and no one answered. $45 later i will NEVER order from them again. New cooks in the kitchen or Covid cooks made the food taste nothing like the historic taste Im use to. Not only is the food poorly executed ..the dynamic of the in dining restaurant is bad energy. The history of Patty Hearst in my life. Knew she was kidnapped and later was wanted by the FBI. During my college years she came into my life in the form of a delicious turkey sandwich with cheese and bacon which is all smothered generously, but not obscenely, with Russian dressing. It was served on an English muffin, but I would always ask for the substitute French roll. In more recent years Patty is now on the menu with a French roll so we don't have to custom order perfection. Extremely reasonable prices. Unique variety of sandwiches (with great names like Gatsby Arrow (roast beef), Fifth Avenue (pastrami) and others). Last night I was tired on the metro out of DC towards Shady Grove. Even though I'm limping due to recent knee surgery i got off at Friendship Heights... headed to the restaurant and picked up my Patty Hearst. Waited 30 minutes for the next train (no reviews of the metro system needed!!). Biting into the sandwich made it all worth while. Cheap eats even before the Valupak coupons in the mail, but I'd rather buy and eat a frozen meal. Dirty tables, so we wiped off our table while we waited. Home fries were so greasy and bland that I threw them away. The omnipresent smell of burnt food made me altogether unsurprised to find my toast burnt on one side; worse, they buttered the burnt sides and sandwiched them together, making it that much harder to scrape off the carbonized planes they tried to hide. Everything was underseasoned, overcooked, and limp. Skip it. read more

This place is a DC institution. Basic food with a little twist, plus they serve beer. There a few around. Lots of good breakfast options, although they also cater to the late night crowd. Being new to the area the frozen yogurt sign caught my attention since I can't have ice cream. I ventured in to find a completely empty establishment. There was not an attendant to greet me or find out my needs and attempt to meet or exceed them. I proceeded to fill up a container. I could have just walked out as I had to search for an employee to ring up the purchase. I left feeling extremely let down. I thought about how much better this cute little glass enclosed shop could be. So many possibilities to grab the attention of the hundreds of consumers passing by, to check out what looked to be a cozy restaurant inside . It was a dreary day. I had been walking in the rain for about a mile and I was a bit cold. Suddenly, I thought of something I wanted and hadn't had in a long time. A BLT. I headed toward this place in Friendship Heights and I had a vague thought that it had closed down ... but it was open. I searched the menu and ordered a BLT. When it came out I thought it was beautiful. The bread was perfect, the bacon was plentiful, the side pickle was good. (OK, well the tomato wasn't perfect but what can you expect.) I thought the sandwich was some kind of word from the universe that things would be better. I decided after I was done to put a $5 tip in the tip jar behind the glass partition. The employee there wasn't exactly impressed, but whatever. I walked home feeling good until I discovered one of my hands was red and so was my pants leg ... some kind of cherry cola syrup from the drink machine I guess. I was on my way to a free advance screening of "The Collector" at the AMC Mazza, THANKS YELP! A friend and I wanted to eat somewhere close to the theatre. Euuureka! Booeymonger a block away from the movie? Here we come! It claims to be a different. A self proclaimed "unique" deli. They carry regular grill items such as burgers, cheesesteaks, and reubens. What they did not carry was the regular (or in some cases, exceptional) taste of an average joe deli. The food reminded me of my high school cafeteria. Unique is right. The taste was something I have not experienced at all. The chicken sandwich I ordered was bland and gross. The "Perdue rotisserie chicken breast" as listed on the item description was miniscule (skimped on the meat BIG time). The highlight of my dinner was the potato wedges. I dislike it when my fries has to steal the show. I enjoy every food item to work as a collective meal. This disaster dinner cost me over 10 bucks as well... I dunno what makes this joint a unique delicatessen? They have nice store design and an extensive menu but other than that, This place stinks. The menu is quite large but that leaves tiny room for specialties. Another thing was the customer service. After years of consistent patronage at the friendship heights location, I am sad to say that it is finally going downhill. Over the last four months the quality of the staff has declined, so much so that recent wait times on relatively uncrowded days bordered 30 minutes. Times were that they moved sandwiches in and out even on the most busy days, a short 5-10 minute wait was typical. The quality of food is more or less the same, still quite good. However, the wait time and monotone staff are making it harder for me to come back again. Overall a solid place to eat with a great sandwich, but the staff and managers are ruining my once favorite sandwich shop in friendship heights. read more

Pros & Cons added on August 28, 2018: Pros: 1. The sandwich was delicious (although there are better sandwich places) 2. They are fairly quick Cons: 1. They are unfriendly! They seem like they could care less about my business every time I've been in there 2. It's relatively expensive compared with other similar sandwich places. Sandwiches are generally around $8, and they aren't big. 3. I got the potato wedges a couple of times, and they give you only like 6 of them. Once they weren't even hot. 4. In April 2018, I had a Spot Luck app deal, and they refused to honor the deal even after I talked to the manager. I emailed the corporate office, and corporate at least conceded that they should've honored the deal and gave me a 25% off for next time, which I used in May. ----- How I heard about this place (Written in 2016): A couple of friends mentioned it was good, and it was a convenient option by the Mazza Gallerie since I've had some free advanced movie showings. Perception (This part was written in 2016): This is one of the only relatively inexpensive options in Friendship Heights beside inside the mall food court (McDonald's, which sucks). Reality (Written August 28, 2018): There are actually multiple other inexpensive options with a block of Mazza Gallerie/Friendship Heights Metro: 1. Upon walking back to my car after one of the advanced movie screenings, I discovered there is a Cosi next door. I hadn't been to a Cosi in at least two years. Cosi sandwiches are pretty good maybe not quite as good, but I would be willing to go to hopefully get better customer service & be a little cheaper to boot. 2. Potomac Pizza (They were very nice, & I need to give them a good review) 3. Cafe kiosk inside the Mall (I had a salad there once, but they also have sandwiches) 4. Whole Foods (Buffet...if you don't get too much food, it's not too expensive) --------- Update I had written in Jan. 2018: Thought of this one as part of my dating series, but realized I reviewed this in May 2016. I actually had 2 dates here both involving free movie screenings. First was back in June 2014; relatively uneventful. Second was a final date in February 2017. We had gone on 8 dates and wasn't going anywhere, but I was starting to see another woman. My one friend really liked her and suggested that I give him the green light to pursue the other girl. I ultimately decided to end it since things were developing with the other girl. Well, it was a good thing that I gave him the green light because things developed quickly between the 2 of them, she moved in with him 3 months later in late May, and now last week she said 'Of course' to being asked to be proposed for marriage. As for me, it didn't turn out quite as good. Yes, I did date that new girl from February to June 2017, but there were some issues. On a positive note, I met another girlfriend in September, and that is going well. [Slight edit on August 28, 2018: That g/f & I broke up in April; she had a lot of issues, and it was starting to unravel a bit even back in January.] Conclusions (written on August 28, 2018): Overall, while the sandwich is good at Booeymonger, my main issue is the unfriendly customer service. read more

I love going to Booeymonger. I've been going for years. They have a large menu and I've yet to get something I dislike. The palate is perfect for everyone from the pickiest eaters to the most adventurous. I recommend the BLT, I get it almost every time. I came here with a friend in the midst of a hunger phase that occurred while we were shopping like crazy . having never tried this place before I thought was looking forward to the experience. I had a turkey wrap which came on in this role as well as potato wedges the price is very reasonable .came out to under 10 dollars. restaurant seating area was quick clean there is no problem finding a table . the bathroom is clean. This place used to be great, going back to the 80s or 90s. Today I ordered carry-out: the Scheherazade sandwich (turkey, cheese, lettuce, Mayo, and chutney), and a roast beef and cheese for my husband. The Scheherazade had a MICROSCOPIC amount of chutney - until today it was consistently perfect, never so stingy. Also, got a small container of tortellini salad, which tasted like it was sitting out all day. Again, it was always good in the past. The service is very slow and indifferent. The physical restaurant itself I think hasn't been refreshed or painted in decades and is dirty. I've put up with that in the past for the good food, but since the food and service have declined, the icing on the cake is the increase in prices. I came here for lunch with a co-worker who swore by their sandwiches. They have a TON of options and maybe I just chose wrong but I wasn't completely thrilled with my sandwich. Their fries are the thick kind, more like potato wedges and they were alright. If you order their special ($1-2 more, I believe) then comes with a drink (yes, they have iced tea, thank you and hallelujah for all my non-soda drinkers), a pickle, and potato wedges. To be quite honest with you, the turkey was quite dry, but the bread was warm and toasted well. I wasn't exactly expecting a fancy sandwich or anything, but it's worth what you paid for it. We got the frozen yogurt. Thus, review is only for that part of restaurant. Not many flavors, and they came out semi-melted. Toppings looked old and surrounding area pretty dirty. I was afraid to even grab any. To top it off I look up to the fudge machine to see an ant crawling over it, and that was when knew I had to write this review ! This review is only addressing sanitary conditions of this location. It is attached to Frozen-Yo. As I was standing in Booeymonger waiting for my lunch to go today (8/18/15), I watched as a male employee with short hair on the sides and long on top with a yellow t-shirt picked rotten blueberries out of a big container he was prepping for the toppings bar at Frozen-Yo. He was touching his face and running his hands through his hair while hand picking bad blueberries from the container he was about to bring out to the toppings bar at Frozen-Yo. He wasn't wearing gloves, just his bare hands. If he thought one was bad he would pick it up, play with it in his hand to inspect it, and if it passed inspection he would put it back in the container to be used as a topping for frozen yogurt at the toppings bar. Booeymonger is already extremely gross and dirty inside with food on the floor everywhere and the ceiling is a completely different story. Nobody should be handling food with their bare hands when everyone else is wearing gloves, and especially not in this environment. I have already reported this to the health department for inspection. Do not eat the blueberries or any other produce from Booeymonger or Frozen-Yo. This is unacceptable and disgusting. read more

"It's just whatever," I say to myself as I walk back towards the Friendship Heights metro. I had myself one of their classic pastrami sandwiches and it was just, alright. From reading their entire menu it looks like nothing is really that special, besides the quarky names for some of their more famous creations. Everything just seems so standard. It also comes across as a place that tries to cut down on food costs. I doubt their food ingredients are the freshest. A lunch here is the kind you won't remember the next day. On the other side, I do understand that it's a staple in the Chevy Chase area along with a few more locations scattered throughout the DMV. Cute name, HOLY SHIT DID I GET A LOT OF FOOD. I got the veggie sandwich, and I'm glad I didn't get the potato wedges that came with it (only $1.35). About $7 for my sandwich, which is more than I would have paid at Subway, but whatevs. Two huge pieces that I totally couldn't finish, especially after I found out there was mayonnaise deliciously smothered all over both of them, peppers, mushrooms, cheese, etc. I definitely had to spend time on the treadmill after that. My friend got the tuna, and also was floored by the amount of sandwich she received. It's been a while, I came here with Soccerballgirl for some lunch the other day. They give you a serving number now - no ordering by name. Shame - i liked that - it was endearingly old fashioned. I had the Manhattan and fries, and a fine glass of cheap beer, Soccerballgirl had my pickle and a bag of chips. She told me she was not hungry. Of course, she had her eye on dessert and the frozen yoghurt place that has now taken over their outside patio. So the negotiations began when we finished our lunch. " But you did not eat your lunch" "Daddy, I did eat my lunch, I ate your pickle and I ate my chips" "Yeah, but that was not a very big lunch" " I know it was not a big lunch, but I ate it all so now I should have dessert. Please Dad, please Dad, can I have some frozen yoghurt with the toppings. I will share it with you." This was only going to end one way, the way most things end, with Soccerballgirl getting her way, but in the middle of all this a beautiful thing happened. A retired / older couple had been sitting near us and they got up to leave, as they were walking out the door the guy came over to me and put his hand on my shoulder and said " it's pretty obvious you have a great relationship with your daughter, well done, you're an example to all of us " I was pleasantly shocked, and managed to mumble thank you before he walked on out with his wife. Of course, it's really easy to have a great relationship with a seven year-old. The tough times are ahead for both of us ! We only stopped in for the frozen yogurt in the front. The self serve style in common for FroYo so be carefull of the weight as the price goes up quick. FYI Marshmallow an gummy items become rock hard when added to cold items. The yogurt was nice and the topping selection good. The dinning area and restrooms in the restaurant were not very nice. It all looked dirty and the toilet in one did not feel like it was connected to the floor well as it tips. Will look for another frozen desert place in the area. read more

I eat at Booeys all the time. It and Panera are the only places in Friendship Heights that I actually crave. This is an old school, throwback kind of place however. It's not like a NY deli necessarily... it's really unlike any other deli/sandwich shop. But, it's darn good. And the service is excellent. If you're a regular, they will even make an effort to learn your name. Come in with moderate expectations, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Hubbs and I were hungry after snacking on popcorn during a movie and wanted real food... and of course that late you don't want a sit down meal... so what better than a good deli sandwich? SO we took the advice of the super nice Security Guard and made our way across the street... The menu board was a bit overwhelming at first... it had more than a few sandwiches... breakfast, soups, desserts, what appeared to be 10 or so sandwiches they had pre-designed... and the MASSIVE build your own board!!! So, I built a simple fresh roast beef and turkey with provolone, caramelized onions and lettuce with the house dressing on the side. (House dressing is a Ranch with a curry seasoning) on a fresh Kaiser roll.... Hubbs got an Italian with banana peppers and baby spinach (which was a little extra). Both sandwiches were HUGE! We were able to eat half that night and have half for lunch the next day... (mine made 3 meals!) And the bread was so soft and fluffy and delish that I could have just buttered that and made a meal on that alone! We didn't try any of the desserts, it was almost 10pm and weren't sure how soft the muffins would be, but the girl helping us said they are made daily, and they looked amazing! They had chocolate chip cookies, lemon poppy seed and blueberry mini-loafs, rice pudding, yogurt and granola cups... I can definitely see this being an after movie tradition being started with the hubbs and kids, because I enjoyed the food, the restaurant was clean, the staff was pleasant, the prices were reasonable... it was overall a fun night!!!! read more

The tables are positioned so close to each other that today at lunch, a person at the next table was able to go through my coat pocket (hanging on a back of a chair) and steal my credit card.
