Edison, what's been going on with you lately?? You look--different. You've totally changed, for the better! I've only been here once, but there were a few clues that indicated this place was gonna be good. Firstly, 4 Yelp stars. Secondly, I get there and it's full of Asian (assuming Korean) people. Thirdly, I pick up my to-go order, and I notice the box isn't shut closed, but is taped open to allow the chicken to vent. Lastly, the aroma building up in my car as I drove back home. I had a feeling this chicken was going to be good and grew more anxious by the minute as it took me 30 minutes to go home. With fried foods, you wanna try it asap, right?? Anyway, finally got home, bit in, delicious. Skin is crispy, chicken is cooked just right, flavor is very much there (although I'm no expert of Korean-style fried chicken, this was delicious). My only gripe is that the wings are on the small side, but eh, given everything else, it's easy to get over this. I will be back here many, many times. Oh Boom Boom Chicken....it was such a tease knowing you were planning on opening in Edison, and waited 2 years for it! Maybe my expectations were too high, it didn't compare to the original Fort Lee location. The chicken tasted greasy, the mild version fell short in terms of flavor, and even the spicy version lacked punch. I can't handle the spicyness at the original location, and when this one didn't even burn my mouth, I knew something was wrong. For those who have been to the Fort Lee location, they usually give a can of soda with every large order, but this one did not, even after we asked about it. The decor was modern, with lots of space, but not enough tables and chairs. On the wall were rows of the following: "Why did the people cross the road? To get to Boom Boom Chicken!" It's the same owner, but I'm hoping they're just working out the kinks because they've only recently opened. 3.5 might be more appropriate but on strength of the main attraction, the chicken wings, I will be generous. Ended up having lunch here the other day. Price for lunch special is great and the amount of food at that price was awesome. It's great that you can choose white rice instead of fries. That said, the rice itself was sort of mediocre quality and the salad that came with was just lame. We got one of the spicy and one of the mild. Usually I'm all for spicy over mild but I thought their mild garlic sauce was way more delicious than the spicy sauce which really was just kind of... semi spicy and that's all the flavor I really got from it. The only reason why I I ever come here is for their lunch special (not worth coming for dinner) and need something closer to me. Otherwise, you're better off getting your Korean fried chicken fix at BBQ Chicken Edison inside Lotte Mart. The last time I came here, the cashier went to bathroom first before giving my order that was all ready and sitting on the counter... & took FOREVER. I would've just taken it if it wasn't in the back counter. All she had to do was hand over my order that was already ready... bizarre. The taste of the chicken here is honestly not bad at all. But the portions are just SO small. I also hate that the radish doesn't come with the chicken for free like most Korean chicken places, and you have to pay additional for it. I first tried their Newark location which was walking distance from Rutgers University, I would stop in on my break between classes and order popcorn chicken at the small counter. I was helped by the owner many of those times. After college, I found their Highland Park Location, which is big & beautiful and made for eat in diners. Wow, the spicy chicken was SPICY! So unassuming too, all mixed into the batter. I loved it, my wife couldn't eat it. Too bad for her, it was awesome. My only issue is the menu is small- and the sides are all strange. We got some sort of pickled radish (maybe?) that was gross... but I have no idea what it was supposed to be so maybe it was perfect and I just didn't like it. I've only ever had Japanese fried chicken, never Korean, and I was pleasantly surprised. If you are in the mood, these guys are doing it right. First things first, this chicken is GOOD. No going around that. I've had both the Popcorn Chicken Lunch Combo and the Wing Combo (6 mild/6 spicy). Lunch Specials are $7 meals everyday from 11am-3pm and include (usually, salad and a choice of either rice or french fries and I believe sweet and sour cut radish). Most of the chicken comes with the choice of mild (soy garlic) and spicy. I got mild to test the waters while my boyfriend got spicy. Both were pretty good, albeit not exactly visually appealing (minimal breading), but I found the mild to be just a tad too sweet. The next time I came here I got the Small Wing Combo half mild/half spicy. And. It. Was. Amazing. The skin was so crunchy and flavorful with the spicy side packing a nice quite heat. There was so much meat on the bone and it was so tender/easy to pull off. Rice isn't included but only a dollar extra so its not too bad. Now for the (slight) downside. I deducted 1 star from a near perfect chicken place for two reasons. One, its on the pricier side and while the portions are good, they don't quite match the price. Two, and this is a big one for some people, the wait. Even with one or two customers in, ordering a meal can have you waiting at LEAST 20 mins, and while normally you can taste the cook-to-order freshness, I've heard people complain about their room-temperature orders. Came in here after a visit into H-mart, but anyone else would probably want to do it the other way around. While this place does have good chicken, it doesn't fully live up to the hype. As a few people have already mentioned, the spicy sauce is not really spicy at all. It is very tasty though. The meat was tender and juicy inside, but also a little bland. It's almost as if they cooked the chicken and just added the sauce at the end. The interior of this place is pretty well designed and organized. The ratio of open space to tables is a little weird for a restaurant though. It almost feels like an Apple store. While this minimalist approach makes it look very cool, it's not very practical if it ever gets really busy. Everything from the furniture to the decor is immaculately clean. There are very limited options on the meals you can order and they're only available at only two price points. $12 or $20. My 12-piece wing meal, which does not include any sides, ended up costing me about $1/Wing. It's even more if you count tax. I don't know about you, but that seems ridiculous for a casual dining of chicken wings. I did not eat in, but the cashier who rang up my take out order was pleasant to interact with and was eager to explain the different meal options. Used to having great friend chicken up in Bergen county or in nyc, so definitely a bit spoiled with some high expectations. Only down fall I'd say is the long wait for your food and it gets packed during peak hours, which only make the wait for your food even longer... And if you're hangry, it's not the best place to go! I ordered their lunch special which comes with 5 pieces, salad and rice. You can choose between mild or spicy flavor and I got spicy. Spicy wasn't spicy, but I have a high tolerance. Rice and salad were average, and is used to help fill you up. The skin was crispy and had a lot of the sauce. The wings and drumsticks had a lot of meat. One of the problems is the price. It's pretty expensive, especially the side dishes. But I ate by myself so it should be cheaper if you split the sides. Also, even though the skin was crispy, there were some parts where it wasn't.
