The quality of their food has been on the decline since my first raving review. I've been here plenty throughout the years and continued to enjoy it whether indoors or delivery. During the last several years, it just hasn't been consistent. Yes indoor atmosphere is very appealing, but the execution of the food lately has left me disappointed including a recent delivery.. A simple order of Pad Thai and Chicken with Pineapple should have resulted in an above average, if not excellent, dinner. However, it didn't even go beyond 2 stars. We stopped in to escape a snowstorm on a Sunday late afternoon and it was nearly empty, super quiet and tranquil which is just what we needed. The staff were kind and the décor felt distinctive but nostalgic. I got the Meang Pla Tod (mackerel appetizer) and the Khao Knook Gapi. The appetizer was served in porcelain soup spoons with a pile of noodles and piece of fish each, to which you could add the spicy sauce. Very flavorful, a nice way to start the meal and try a fish I don't usually have prepared in a traditional way (reminded me a bit of the Korean breaded fried mackerel dish). But the standout for me was the main dish, which had shredded mango, scallions, cucumber, fried rice, juicy sausage, and flavorful pork to mix all together almost like a bibimbap. It was the perfect amount of food, the flavors were married beautifully, and the meat in particular was like nothing else I've ever tried. It was just such a cozy hidden gem in Carroll Gardens, and I want to try so many other things like the pad thai and duck curries. So delicious, quite reasonable pricing, a calming atmosphere. I came here for dinner as a back-up option after failing to get into Ugly Baby, a renowned nearby NYC Thai restaurant that was closing that week. It's a small, but cozy restaurant adorned with bright decorations and colorful plates. To eat, I had pad thai with tofu. They uniquely prepare this classic dish by covering the noodles with a blanket of fried egg. The peanuts, scallions, and crushed pepper are arranged on the sides of the plate for mixing in. Boran has to be my favorite Thai restaurant in NYC. Maybe even one of my top 10 favorite restaurants of all time. I came here on a Saturday around 2:30 PM with a group of six for lunch. The wait was about 30 minutes. There's no indoor waiting area, so we had to wait outside. There's parking nearby so you can also wait in your car until they text you that your table is ready. We ordered the mixed appetizer platter, fresh young coconut green curry with chicken, duck garlic, maing pla tod (their signature fish), crab meat fried rice, and beef pad Thai. Mixed Appetizer Platter: This is a must if you're indecisive and want to sample all the appetizers. It came with chicken satay, grilled honey pork, sausages, fried crab dumplings, curry puffs, steamed tapioca with sweet ground pork, and shrimp rolls. Plus, four dipping sauces to mix and match. It's perfect for sharing or just treating yourself to a little bit of everything. Fresh Young Coconut Green Curry with Chicken: You can pick your protein (we chose chicken), and they don't skimp on the chicken. The coconut flavor came through strong, but the curry itself wasn't as bold as I expected. It had a bit of heat, but nothing overwhelming. This used to come with sticky rice, but now it's served with regular white rice. I wish this came with sticky rice again. Duck Garlic: This dish was a standout! The duck was tender with crispy skin and served over Chinese broccoli soaked in a rich, flavorful sauce. Every bite was perfection. Maing Pla Tod (Signature Fish Dish): The fish was already cut into pieces (no bones!), making it super easy to eat, but they left the whole fish intact for presentation. The flavors were amazingggg, a mix of sweet and salty. Add a pepper if you want some spicy. Crab Meat Fried Rice: This dish was simple but so well done. It came with plenty of crab meat on top, and the sauce and lime were served on the side so we could customize it. A drizzle of sauce and a squeeze of lime made all the flavors come together. Beef Pad Thai: The presentation was so unique!The noodles were wrapped in an egg "blanket," and you had to cut it open to get to the Pad Thai inside. The toppings (chili flakes, peanuts, lime, bean sprouts, and chives) were served on the side, which was thoughtful since not everyone loves them all. We tried it without lime at first, and it was a little sweet, but adding lime balanced it out perfectly. Heads up: the chili flakes are super spicy! The waitress was helpful in explaining dishes and smartly asked all tables about allergies. It was pretty empty on a Saturday afternoon but it was one of the Thai restaurants I wanted to try out in Park Slope. Place isn't too big and can probably seat less than 10 parties at once. I ordered the Meang Pla Tod appetizer, which is basically a mackerel salad, Khao Knook Gapi Boran (one of their specials) and Mackerel Fried Rice. Presentation of food was A+++ and the taste matches its presentation. The mackerel salad was delicious and refreshing. I loved their spicy green sauce. All their sauces that accompany the dishes are pretty spicy but so good. The mackerel fried rice was one of the best fried rice I've had. The mackerel serving was generous -- slices on top of the bed of fried rice and surprised to find mackerel bites within the fried rice as well. The Khao Knook Gapi Boran comes deconstructed style but you mix all the veggies, egg and meat up with their sauce and you have flavor packed in a plate. All the dishes we tried were so good. We ordered one large tom yum soup, a mixed appetizer platter, khao soy kai, pad thai boran, and khao knook gapi boran. The best part of the meal was the appetizer platter with a variety of fried crab dumplings, curry puffs, chicken and beef satays served with different dipping sauces. The appetizers had a good balance of sweet and savory flavors, the fried appetizers are crispy, and the meat is tender. The rest of the food either was too salty or too sweet. The tom yum soup was too salty and too sour, the entrees were not salty at all. It's as if the kitchen at Boran misplaced the salt shaker when they served our entrees. While the seasoning of the food could use some work, the flavors were all there. Aside from the food, the service was friendly and the ambiance is cozy casual. So I decided to eat authentic(?) on my trip, so I went to this Boran Thai place(and was initially hopeful because it had nice decor. However, a few things led to this... "unsatisfactory dining experience" as they say... I ordered the Salmon Choo Chee, which was ok, for the 5 seconds it was in my mouth... Problem was, there was worm in the fish and it was still wriggling. That made me rethink my decision to tryThai food. Bleh. Anyway... The service was quick, and the staff were attentive. But, when I discovered the worm, I packed up after the first bite(luckily I spit it out.) without paying. I left a tip for the busser, but I wasn't paying for a parasite. The atmosphere was "visually" appealing, but the solid wood benches lacked any padded seating, so that was kinda uncomfortable. Regarding pricing, the meal was more expensive compared to restaurants I have visited at home, where similar dishes are priced $10-$15 lower. Staff are friendly and nice, albeit often a bit busy rushing around. The appetizer platter is a must-get and is only served as a dine-in option, which was both aesthetically pleasing and delicious with its multiple dipping sauces. The duck curry was decent but not my favorite, for the bamboo shoots was a bit too overpowering in my opinion. This is definitely a must order because it's just too good. The problem is I loved all the appetizers and wanted more of each. Most people normally order the classic Tom Yum Soup but I highly recommend the Tom Kha Soup! It's a coconut based soup with mushroom and galangal; it's really tasty with great mix of sour flavor but its not overpowering. I was here with two others as the menu looked more unique and the reviews singed high praise. The portion sizes are large and the food is different from other Thai places and in a good way. Overall everything was quite good. The prices are a tad high but for the portion size and especially for being in a nice part of Brooklyn, I don't have issues with them. I personally had a butterfly pea flower tea to drink which was lightly sweet with a bit of sourness from lime. It was fine. We started with a few appetizers, the Miang Pla Too and the Chicken satay. Miang Pla Too- Thai mackerel lettuce wrap with noodle, ginger, red onion, lime, peanut, and Thai seafood sauce This is one of the more unique dishes. Nice tasty combination of a lot of different flavors including sour, spicy, pickled, and sweet. Chicken satay- Peanut sauce and pickled cucumber The satay here was very moist and the pickled cucumber/achat went well with it. My only complaint is that the peanut sauce was a tad too thin/watery compared to some places and the chicken needed perhaps a bit more grill marks (more like one of my dishes below) with the latter being a personal preference. In terms of mains, I got the Taste of Isan while others got the Khao knook gapi boran and the Fresh Young Coconut Green Curry with chicken. Tastes of Isan- Thai northeastern food with somtum (papaya salad), roasted chicken, spicy minced pork, sticky rice. Somtum/green papaya salad. The somtum here was nicely flavored and it reminded me of the one from som tum der (perhaps a bit less spicy here.) It went well with the other dishes (and especially with the sticky rice as expected.) Roasted chicken- Said roasted chicken (or gai yang I believe) was served with lettuce wraps as well as a sweet chili sauce. The chicken was very moist and it went well with the wraps outside of it being a tad messy to eat. Nice grill marks also. Spicy minced pork: As expected, this was larb or a cold pork salad. This was also excellent and very well flavored. Khao Knook Gapi Boran (Signature of Boran-) Fried rice with shrimp paste and mix sliced shallots, cucumber, shredded, green mango, dried shrimps, sweetened pork, eggs, chicken sausage. I tried a very little bit of this though I couldn't exactly try more than a bite ortwo. Very nice mix of flavors and an interesting tasty texture. Would order this next time. Fresh Young Coconut Green Curry- Choice of chicken, beef, shrimp or tofu. Fresh goong with coconut, eggplant with green curry, bamboo shoot, and basil Said person got this with chicken. The curry as expected had pretty light spices. It wasn't to my cup of tea (as I tend to prefer spicier Thai food) but it was still good and the portion size as per the other dishes was big. For dessert we got two, the coconut rice pudding and then pandan flavored coconut jam with roti. The former was more akin to a coconut custard found in many places and it was topped with some type of unknown fruit (maybe Mango but it could have been some other tropical fruit) and it was very tasty. The other dish was served in a very pretty container with the pandan flavored jam (or kaya in Malaysian spots) being an excellent version; not being too overly sweet. Both were good with me preferring the latter as I love kaya and the others preferring the former. Overall I don't have many complaints. The container for the white rice that came alongside my friend's dish (massaman curry) was sooo cute. 5/5 - Khao Knook Gapi Boran - the mix of rice, tasty sausage, pork with refreshing cucumbers and mango really made this dish pop! The Shrimp was huge and tasty. But the mvp was definitely the sausage, it had so much flavor and you could taste the Lemongrass in it. It had enough heat to feel it without being too hot or too mild. The Issan Classic had A grilled style Chicken similar to a moo ping but chicken instead. It was tender, juicy and flavorful. It also had a Som Tum/Papaya Salad, sweet, spicy, cool and really good. Some reviews mentioned that the food was on the sweet side/too sweet - this is definitely true, but it also didn't affect my enjoyment of the dishes too much. Overall, the food is good and I'd be returning to try some different items! Mix Appetizer Platter ($20): you should absolutely get this! I love when restaurants have sampler platters of all their appetizers, as I normally want to try everything before committing to a whole plate of it, you know? There's two of each item. The standouts were the thai sausage and the grilled pork skewer. 10/10 would order those items separately again! Thai sausage is super lemongrassy, the pork skewer is juicy and has a wonderful char. From this platter, the grilled chicken satay was extremely rubbery, the curry puffs are standard, and the deep fried spring rolls weren't the best either. I kept thinking the circular one would be crab rangoon, which it wasn't. The sauces accompanying each appetizer were all quite sweet so I didn't end up using much except for the grilled honey pork one. Duck Curry ($19): Boran was super duper generous with the amount of duck given! It's all hidden underneath the platted slices. The curry is pretty good (even better the next day!) and has bamboo shoots, peppers, and pineapple. Hate cooked fruits but surprisingly the bites of pineapple were actually good! The curry isn't too creamy or rich, but has a good flavor. Not spicy, sadly. Meang Pla Tod $24: Boran specialty. Aka deep fried dorado fish. This is the one where the sauce really didn't do it for me, as it's too sweet. I enjoyed the fried fish and all the toppings per bite, but probably should've picked a basil version! I've pretty much been happy with everything save for one massive exception-- the seafood ginger dish (squid, shrimp, mussels). It sucked. I recommend you skip it! That aside, it's all good! Came here for a late lunch during the week after Christmas with family of 4. We ordered 3 apps and 3 main dishes of many varieties. The challenge for us is that we have eaters that want very spicy and some that do not like spice at all. This was a perfect restaurant that was able to advise us on what to order for varying pallets and all very amazing! We had Num Tom, Chicken Satay (probably the best I've ever had), Chicken Larb, Masannam Curry, Pla Lad Prick (boneless fish), and Khao Soy Kai. Beautifully situated and decorated. Wine margarita was different and refreshing. The varietal app plate was gorgeous and tasty. Especially the tiny savory gluten balls and the sausage. We also loved the fried curry puff skin. Tamarinds duck was delectable furnished w 2 pails of rice that made the presentation adorable. Really vibing this spot turning out flavorful Thai dishes in a lovely somewhat subdued romantic atmosphere. read more

This is my second attempt for food here and today was a success. I ordered chicken pad Thai after seeing the pictures of it wrapped in egg and the site saying it will be the best pad Thai I've ever had..... ummm, ok. That would be a no. It was good and they paid attention to my request (online yelp ordering) for Thai spicy and extra peanut sauce. That part was perfect.... but not only was it not wrapped in egg I never saw any! I'd still order it again if I called to verify the egg questions. Masks required with service through a window. Outdoor dining available too. read more
