Boran continues to be one of mine and my husband's favorite Thai spots so I'm not budging on the four stars, but we recently had a little bit of an iffy experience. I booked a reservation here for my dad's birthday dinner. He's been here in the past and loved it so I thought it was a good safe choice, but it fell a little lackluster for him specifically which is a bummer since it was HIS birthday. We started out with some Chicken Satay and Crab Rangoon, both of which were fire. We haven't ordered those here before so can confirm the satay is a new favorite. Can't really mess up the rangoon, but still it was delicious! My dad is a sucker for Panang Curry with Chicken but they will only make it here with salmon for whatever reason? Bummer number one. He went with the Crying Tiger as his back up and when they brought it out, we were all wowed! Presentation is a 10/10 for sure. He ordered it medium rare though and it came out WELL done which, for the price, was a letdown. I ended up doing something I never do and broke free of the shackles that their Pad Thai has on me. The Boat Noodles looked so delicious that I decided to full send and give it a try - as a huge soup girlie the curiosity was just too strong. The broth is very herb forward but also still has a complex, delicious flavor. Spice level was on point. The waitress told me it was very beef forward and boy it was - but it was tasty! TONS of generously sliced beef. Loved the rice noodles too. My sister ordered the Crab Fried Rice which was an insane portion and uniquely plated. Large serving of fried rice covered in a Thai style omelet with a HEAPING pile of crab on top, served with a yummy Thai spicy mayo. She let me try a couple bites and it was pretty superb. It's a little pricy at $40 but it's at least two meals so I guess it's justified. I put in my reservation notes that it was a birthday dinner and they were kind enough to bring out a free slice of cheesecake that was beautifully presented with dry ice and all. Even with a few hiccups in this dinner we will definitely still continue to frequent. Over the 5+ times we've been here this was the first kind of "meh" experience but it was still good! read more

Vistes on a Saturday afternoon for lunch with a friend, both our first time here, and we were really happy with our experience. The restaurant is beautiful and well decorated, and the staff were very friendly. I do wish they had checked on us a bit more since there were a few moments we waited even though the restaurant wasn't busy at this moment. The food was excellent and made perfectly. We ordered the crab rangoons, calamari rings, chicken fried rice, and the pad ka pao, which ended up being our favorite dish we ordered. We will definitely be back! read more

It saddens me to write this review, because I liked this restaurant, but given the circumstances- it's unavoidable. My partner and I recently had lunch at Boran Royal Thai only to leave with heavy hearts. After enjoying a delicious meal and good service by our waitress, we were given the incorrect bill from the table next to us. We paid it, 2X our bill including a generous tip, before realizing that knowing it was not the correct bill. Once we realized the error, we informed the waitress, confident that her oversight would be handled with care. Unfortunately, instead of it being handled in a professional and apologetic way, her "manager" claiming to be the "owner", came over and began questioning us and implying that we had done something wrong. We simply wanted a receipt showing proof of the cancelled transaction in case the first payment went through. Though, he didn't provide adequate documentation only saying- "don't worry, it didn't go through". Even after his rude response, I wanted to try and lighten the mood/offer another opportunity for him to provide a positive outcome. So,I shared that we were there to celebrate my birthday- literally the day of. Unfortunately, he continued his aggressive behavior and refused to provide even a small gesture of kindness or show any responsibility, so we simply paid (again) and left. Visited this establishment. The aesthetics of the inside are very beautiful and does provide a view of the water. However, the food is seriously lacking. The place was extremely cold. We even asked to turn on the heater at our table side, and this was never addressed. We ordered the banana blossom salad, and there was no banana blossom at all in the salad and it was extremely onion heavy, and you could taste that the dressing was made with fake lime juice rather than fresh lime juice which completely altered the flavor. We also ordered the khao soi. The dish we received could not have been further from what it should be. It was basically a yellow curry with chicken and noodle on the side instead of the appropriate soup it should be. Highly disappointing experience, and also extremely expensive. Fast friendly service with flavors you'll crave the next day. Wonderful ambiance and great views bolster the experience, but are not mandatory to enjoy this establishment. Can be pricey depending on what you order, but was worth it for me. Total bill including tip today $108.73. Could have fed 3 adults on the two dishes we ordered. Long story long, the parking situation is not bad. The garage is not overly full on a regular Friday afternoon and once you cross the street, the walk is less than 2 minutes. You're not directly on the water, but the views are phenomenal from the patio and even better from the second floor patio. Service is friendly and attentive. We wanted for nothing our entire meal and our server was very helpful with suggestions and knowledgeable about what ingredients were and what dishes contained what. That's important to me due to my food allergies. The food was amazing. We order the royal crab fried rice at a level 3 and the crispy garlic chicken at a level 2. The rice was phenomenal! Tons of flavor on its own with a tiny kick of addictive heat. Perfectly soft cooked omelette and a literal mound of crab with seasonings mixed in. It also came with a topping sauce and small salad to mix in. My favorite part was the egg with the popping salmon roe. The chicken was very crispy and not overcooked. I thought the sauce would make it soggy, but it's coated and not overly sauced so it stayed crispy even after about 15 minutes. The chicken was tender, juicy and sweet at a level 2. No signs of heat in the chicken at all level two so I suggest starting at a level 3 if you're looking for a variation of flavors. The tamarind in the sauce was prominent without the heat and was still quite tasty without it. We also ordered a Stella and a Strawberry Cosmo. The Stella was an average pour and the Cosmo was perfectly sweet and STIFF!! This is a wonderful place to have a girls lunch or afternoon date. If you have friends visiting from out of town, this a good place to bring them to experience the waterfront without all the crowds and drug heads you must wade through to get to the pier in Seattle. 10 out of 10 recommend! read more

I have been here many times. I had a reservation for my birthday, my party of 4 and myself waited almost one hour to be seated when I had a reservation weeks in advance for my birthday? The location was not busy on this day- after waiting about one hour to be seated, we then waited 20+ minutes to receive only our drinks! Waitress finally came to take our food orders after.... Fast forward to yesterday, I came back again to give this place another chance after ruining my birthday plans with my friends... the waitress was very kind and the place was very clean, however, this time/ the food and drinks were awful..... might I add, this place is very expensive for the food quality and presentation you receive. I can't say I'd eat here again. Boran Royal Thai Cuisine was located right by the hotel I was staying in for a conference, so needed to get some dinner nearby. I'm always down for Thai food, so it was nice to see this place just right across the street from me. Although the decor is nice here and service was good, with an outdoor patio area, the food was overpriced. I ordered the Cha Cha Seafood Sizzling plate, which included mussels, shrimp, scallops and calamari in a curry sauce and veggies. The spice was there, which I liked, but the seafood was not portioned out well as the plate had more squid than anything, so of course there was only one scallop and two shrimps. The jasmine rice it came with was very clumpy and sticky versus fluffy and tender. This cost me over $40 with tax and tip, and was not worth it. Overall, if you're in Point Ruston and you crave Thai food, this is by default the only place you can get such a fare. The food wasn't bad, but was not worth the steep prices, which I imagine is due to its location as most waterfront restaurants take advantage of. I'd get cocktails here and if you make it for happy hour then that's even better. But it's a pretty penny for dinner. read more

We came here in hopes of having a delicious birthday meal unfortunately, we left with a fairly high bill and low satisfaction. Our waitress Katie was wonderful and had a great personality and was very helpful upon being seated. The table fireplace lamp was not working and they ran out of lighter fluid so she improvised and used house liquor to light it. What a great idea. When two of our guests wanted hot coffee and they did not serve hot coffee in the restaurant. She made sure that that could happen. We ordered several dishes and only one thing was a positive mention the soup. The rest of the items were probably not even a one star, including a combo fried rice dish chicken,beef & pork that was so dry the meat almost had to be cut with a knife and it was over $40! It had hardly any flavor. We order chicken Lard That had decent flavor and came with the seam of cabbage, we then had to ask for lettuce wrap. This is one of the nicest Thai restaurants I've ever been to. The decor and ambiance is first class Thai without feeling 'Americanized'. The service from the front door, to the server, to the busser was great! Very attentive and timely. The food was delicious. I've had great Pad Thai many times in my life, and I'd rate theirs top ten percent. Went with number two heat. Just right! I'll start with the good: Food was delicious, I've tried many Thai places and this was a hit (taste wise). We chose to sit outside they have covered lounge area with fire pits to stay warm. We were the only ones outside for a while. The not so good: We asked multiple times to turn down the music. It was so loud and the server said "this is the vibe". After we said we don't want drinks (just water) with our food, the server turned up the music again and never returned. Someone else dropped off our food, no napkins, literally never came to check on us or add water. After ages they came with the bill. Personally I don't think service should depend on if you order drinks or not. It seemed like once the server realized we weren't racking up a drinks tab they gave up on us and never returned. I love Thai Food and the heavenly beef appetizer was super yummy! I ordered their Yellow Curry with spice level of 2 it was a tad sweeter but I love pineapple with the carrots potatoes and chicken. They are more of an upscale d restaurant so rice here was considered a side but it was worth it!! Their Mocktails are super yummy if you don't want to drink and they offer happy hour in their bar as well! On top of that an older lady who was clearly management was so rude to this hostess (who is a woman of color) it wasn't her fault she kept going back to the kitchen and she kept getting sent out. if she's reading this please work somewhere where you are respected. Also when I asked for money back some guy came from the bar area barely acknowledged me and handed me my receipt. No apology or anything. This is only for the Crispy Garlic Chicken. We have gotten it many times, in person and to-go since they opened. It's always been flavorful, crispy and amazing. Today we got a to-go order of it and were disappointed. The chicken was not crispy, was less flavorful, and the pieces were quite large. What made the chicken good before was having it in the smaller pieces, which meant they were more breaded and thus crispier and more surface area for sauce. Wonderful deconstructed crab fried rice. Some of the best chicken satay I've ever had. Masaman curry was rushed, though, and had undercooked potatoes (one of the main ingredients). I ordered meat balls (appetizer), beef salad, pad see ew, and pad ka pao. quality wise, the pad ka pao was probably the most successful - I could tell if it was plated it would look really nice(20.95)! The meatballs were a few meatballs and a little side of sauce, definitely overpriced and underwhelming (12.95). Pad see ew was standard except I paid $4 extra for mushrooms and there weren't any (24.95). Beef salad had a decent flavor but the beef was neither an appetizing color or texture (19.95). Generally, this place is overpriced but I think I can lump that in with being a "waterfront" restaurant. Would not return, do not recommend. read more

Our Server was fantastic and friendly. Appetizers and entrees arrived in a timely manner. You're welcome to inquire and request spice level in dishes. Our party of five ordered: Spring Rolls: Crispy on the outside. Filling with dipping sauce was yummy. Vegan Fresh Rolls: Loved the fresh green, leafy lettuce, fresh shrimp, shredded carrots rolled in rice paper and dipped in warm peanut sauce topped with minced peanuts. Pad Thai: Delicious! This place was awful. The manager was serving us and the food tasted horrible. It tasted like microwaved food. DO NOT EAT HERE if you're looking for authentic Thai food. The vegetables that are listed in the yellow curry were not in the curry. The Massaman curry had a cup of whole peanuts. The Chicken Satay was so dry. The bowls they delivered were dirty and my son found a black hair in his Jasmine rice. Even after we told the manager that we asked for no spicy, they still put whole chili peppers in the yellow curry. A wonderful place to bring a good size group of 10-12 people. We went for happy hour which is so great at this location. Every item on their menu was beautiful, tasty and good. Affordable prices which was a bonus! Plus the happy hour is longer than all other places around here. When you arrive you can get your parking validated. Wifi is horrible in this area so you can get their code and be set. The group had a great time! The wait staff could be more friendlier and helpful but overall ok. I understand we had a bigger group, but they were already going to get a 20% tip because of our size so was hoping for great customer service. I would say it was good so gave them 4 stars. If they were more helpful and attentive, then 5. The owner was great and gave us tours of the private room and explained what they are doing with their new chef and menu. Thai food from Boran Royal Thai place is a winner for both authentic and for presentations!! Their ingredients is top notch and very fresh!! 2nd visit (not on weekend) the flavors of all the dishes are so different (that's the reason for lowering to 3 stars instead of 5) -- we ordered similar dishes but also ordering Larb that supposed to be sour but it came out mostly too sweet. Fried rice was not much flavor as well as Grilled Beef or Crying Tiger. The wonton noodle soup also really mild so we need to remind ourselves if we come back, it has to be Sunday!! read more

Nice restaurant to enjoy some Thai food and right by the water! It's a win-win in my books! Love seeing a variety of restaurants down at Ruston with the option of asian food! You have the option of dining indoors when it's chilly or outside when the sun is out. It can get quite busy during the weekend if it's nice and people are out but wait time is decent. My go to for the food is pad thai and the flavors are spot on every time which I appreciate! They also validate for parking! Awesome! read more

Absolutely incredible Laarb Salad. WOW. I asked for extra herbs and they piled it on!!!!!beautiful place, I hope they get more business because it would be sad to lose them!! Second visit... tried the Banana Blossom Salad with prawns and Chicken. It was very flavorful with a sauce of coconut, lime, maybe ginger, garlic, tamarind, fish sauce, and fresh herbs. I'm have a few experiences to share regarding this Thai restaurant. First time eating here was a take out experience, not great. Our noodles were dry- both dishes were horrible. Two additional experiences: tried to give Boran Thai another chance. This is the closest Thai restaurant to my home, and along the waterfront in a great area. I came with a friend of mine during lunch, hostesses have been un-welcoming everytime. We sat down, no one approached us for over 15 min- we just got up and left. Third time, tonight, with my family- walked in at dinner time- no hostess present. Stood at the front waiting for acknowledgement- took 10 min. Eventually he came over, but was busy doing something- no acknowledgment - until eventually he said "I'll be right with you", then walked away. This is 5 of us awkwardly standing in the lobby. Then someone came over who looked like a Manager and asked if we had reservations. We said no. He looked beyond annoyed. AGAIN- so unwelcoming. He eventually sat us. At this point, we looked around at each other and said, "Do we really want to eat at a place where we feel unwelcomed?" We all got up and left. Third strike. Don't waste your time at this restaurant! Great location, spicy flavorful dishes and amazing service. This is my new favorite Thai place in Tacoma. I tried their papaya salad and pad Thai and I had 4 stars for both and my mouth was on fire! I could not get enough and I can't wait to be back to try their lobster pad Thai. For guests 21+ you can sit upstairs on their outside patio, so romantic and the inside decor is unmatched! Oh my GOSH! This place was phenomenal! I started with a lychee martini. Soooo good! We each had curry. I had red curry with tofu and my partner had yellow curry with chicken. We were both blown away by how delicious it was. We also got a side of jasmine and sticky rice. We sat at a table in the bar and our bartender/server was super nice. Really, everyone we encountered was extremely friendly. It was very mellow and had a nice chill vibe. Excited to bring my daughter next time! As soon as I walked in, I appreciated the ambiance and atmosphere. We had a reservation and were seated right away. Our food came out in a timely manner. However, there was a bit of confusion. My friend ordered the same Pad Prig Khing with shrimp but asked for gluten-free and her's came with literally no sauce while mine came covered in sauce. We asked one of the servers about the situation and she didn't seem to fully understand what we were asking and didn't give a clear answer either. It seemed like she was going to ask the kitchen. We waited but no follow-up. We ended up asking another server and thankfully he was able to resolve it rather quickly. Visited on Saturday during our burst of sun in the PNW. The menu looked amazing and my mouth was watering for their lobster pad Thai. It seems they might be going through some staffing issues because my food took a long time to be served. While I was excited to try my dish, I was extremely disappointed that the lobster was overcooked. They tried to make it right by offering shrimp as well as a discount on the meal. For $50 dish, my expectations were pretty high (and rightfully so). I'll definitely try again based on the location, service and my love for Thai food. read more

It was our first time trying this place for lunch. We got a nice table by the window. Staff were friendly and great atmosphere. Service was fast. The only issue was the chicken was very tough and dry like jerky in both orders (kao soi chicken and cashew chicken), flavor was good for both. Our main server had a beard, was super cute, and fun to talk to. He actually talked through tequila options with us and made a fire recommendation.
