Oh my! Tuesday morning and waited 25 minutes for two lattes. Young barista was a nice guy, but too forever. And when we finally got it, he had to remake it because he used the wrong milk. It didn't help that the other barista had her daughter in there. Guessing she was 8-10 calling out orders and blending some of the drinks. We used to love this place, but they seem to need better management and allowing a young child behind the counter getting ice, blending drinks, and calling orders out. Hmmmm? Worst service. Went on a Saturday around 10am and it took 35 mins to get my drink. The barista and food workers were super slow, making small talk with each other. No sense of urgency. I then had to go ask a food person for my muffin (after getting coffee order) and he walked away to get a bag, walked back to muffin case, walked away again to get tongs, came back to muffin case, and then slowly opened pastry bag to grab muffin. Super excited and happy that this place is still here. It is such a local staple and a Tacoma favorite. Their drink menu is vast! Now featuring the energy drink called Lotus. Which apparently is a plant based energy drink which supposed to be a healthier option. My daughter's friend recommended it. I had the mocha latter with alternative almond milk and ugh it was as good as I remember. The hot coffee was perfect for the rainy weather. I had my usual Tuna sandwich which came with a house salad. The salad had tomatoes and the girl at the front couldn't tell me if it was Roma tomatoes or not. I just asked her to remove them. It would be nice for her ti check because it is allergy related but she didn't bother to go and ask so thats the minus star. It is important to cater to allergies. The sitting arrangements are great. Indoor, outdoor and upstairs. I usually like to seat in the enclosed wooden tables but they were taken. It is such a vibe! Free covered parking across the street or free 2hr parking right at front. Two stars - Average We went here for brunch on the weekend. It is in a good location near the shops by the movie theatre. The cafe has a lot of seating, and it is decorated nicely. I did not care for the food. It was like bland cafeteria food, but at a price comparable to other restaurants. Maybe we caught them on a bad day, but I probably wouldn't go here again. If I did, I would stick to the pastries and coffee. read more

Beautiful, relaxing cafe in Rustin near the Pt. Defiance ferry dock. Had the "zombie" iced tea, which was made with real strawberries and was heavenly. Staff were relaxed and friendly. Lots of seating. A great stop on the way to the nearby movie theater. Will definitely visit again. read more

I can't believe it took me so long to peek my head in this place and discover that it's a super groovy coffee house that makes me feel like I'm back in the 90s! The coffee and tea drinks are fine, nothing special, but the vibe is great. The interior is all wood and there's an upper level where you can get cozy in the booths. I've started going here regularly and the best part (besides being able to go for a walk along Commencement Bay with your coffee) is that - even though it's part of the Point Ruston development - it doesn't feel like you're in a mall. The only downside are the gluten free donuts That have taken over Tacoma. The baker must have a fabulous sales team because they're EVERYWHERE but if you're not gluten free they're just not good. Stopped by for a quick coffee drink. We came in just before the big rush. The young lady taking our order was super nice and helpful. I was able to get a good tasting drink for my mom who is a diabetic. They offer a few sugar free options. There is upstairs sitting and plenty of room for downstairs sitting. Super stroller friendly! They charge for creamer and sugar in your coffee! to get jelly for your toast is 35 cents a packet. and if you ketchup, mayo, ranch or sirachi on the side of your omelette 60 cents each. It was a bad day for an introduction to the Jewel Box. A very busy Saturday... crowded with no accommodation for disabilities; Inadequate seating and too cramped for wheelchair. No table service and you had to bus your own table. They were clearly understaffed and service slow: one meal was Simple eggs, and a cold, undercooked sausage and English muffin. Acoustics were awful and the noise level so high you had to shout (like a latecomer at a cocktail party). SO disappointing, will not be returning. read more

We came in last weekend ordered 2 coffees and a Nutella crepe and the crepe took over 20 mins. (We were there right at 9 before the crowds got there) The place was not booked or full of visitors. Used to visit this place often even though it usually had long waits. Our Go-To was avocado smoothies until one night my wife and daughter tasted something off, like an old taste. When we brought it up to the workers they only asked if my wife needed more sugar or a different drink altogether because they didn't want to make another avocado one since it was the end of the day. They also gave us weird looks like we were the problem rather than listening to the customers who have been tasting it for years. No refund offered, they then stated they would call the manager and took my wife's number but this was obviously a lie to get rid of us because haven't heard back from the manager or staff since then. The parking isn't straightforward, and while they have a QR code for parking info, I didn't see clear signage that it's free for retail visitors. Inside, they offer free Wi-Fi and have two unisex restrooms that can only be opened with a key. It was clean but not the most convenient. The setup is a bit different here; food orders are self-pickup since they aren't a full-service restaurant. What really killed it was the long wait for coffee. I understand weekends are busy, but it dragged on so long that people in line were visibly frustrated and even chatting about the slow service. Came in around 5:15pm on July 8th since I had a smoothie here a bit ago that I fell in love with. We ordered an avocado smoothie and also a peanut butter banana smoothie. The drinks took a really long time to make even though there were only a few people inside, who already had their drinks. I had one of the worst experiences of my life today. The staff at this coffee shop were unbelievably rude, arrogant, and completely unprofessional. This is by far the worst coffee shop I've ever visited. When I first got my coffee, it was extremely sweet. I politely asked if they could make it less sweet. Instead of remaking it, they dumped half of it out, added water and milk, and handed it back to me. Obviously, it tasted like nothing -- completely watered down. So again, I politely asked if they could just remake the drink. At that point, the staff member rolled her eyes, smirked, and angrily dumped the entire coffee straight into the sink, splashing it everywhere as if to make a point. Shocked, I asked her why she was acting like that. She sarcastically said she was "trying to be fast" and asked if there was a problem, all while smirking at me. I was so humiliated. I asked to speak to the manager, but what came out was a so called "supervisor" who didn't care at all. she said, "What's the problem? She'll just make you a new one. It's not a big deal." When I asked to speak to the owner, she said, "figure it out yourself." Meanwhile, the staff who had thrown away my coffee stood in the back, laughing and whispering with another male employee, clearly mocking me. This place treats customers like garbage. I paid for my drink, but instead of receiving basic service, I was mocked, humiliated, and treated like I didn't matter. Is it because I'm Asian? Is it because my English isn't perfect? I've never in my life felt so disrespected and humiliated. The staff at this location have zero respect for customers. Their behavior is absolutely disgusting. Met up with a girlfriend to have coffee and had never been here before. I'd missed the sign on the door, as I stepped inside. She had her coffee and wore a frown on her face. She was upset by the sign on the door, so I went outside and captured a photo to share. I can see why it bothered her. It's not warm and welcoming, it's kind of a rude tone, and I'm wondering why it's printed & posted? I'd ordered my coffee at the counter. They took my order and immediately the kiosk asks for a tip. I get it, as this seems customary these days. The irony is, they don't bring your drink to you, or your food, they shout out your name. I'd missed hearing my name called out as it is LOUD inside. The music is very, very noisy. Plus, the high ceilings make the acoustics kind of weird. I got my drink and we left. Ambience is super cool inside! I love the decor. Coffee is basic, nothing to write home about. No cute foam pictures or anything crazy. But the postings of "expectations" on the door seemed super weird to me. The staff was basic. Not smiling or happy to be there, just bland. My friend wanted a refill on the drip coffee she'd ordered and the original worker told her it would cost .25 cents! The next guy didn't charge her. (Obviously inconsistency in "rules" based on which staff member is working). The turnoff is on the heavy-handed "rules" as it's not warm or welcoming. Cool vibe, no wait, we ordered at the counter because our table didn't have a QR code, but it was nice to order at the counter because we decided to add a few donuts to our order- on my! I'd been wanting to try this place since it opened, but I was never around during breakfast (not that it's the only time to go). A few days ago I got lucky. The food and service were great, the cleanliness of the place, not so much. The floor was covered in dirt and goodness-knows-what. One of the restrooms was is so dirty that there is some sort of black substance growing on one whole side of the hand dryer and part of the wall. The glass doors and other poly glass still have Valentine's Day decorations drawn on them. The tables were dirty. It felt filthy and sad. I was afraid of how the kitchen might look. Again, the food and drink were good. If I'd paid closer attention before ordering, I'd have walked out because of the dirtiness. I'm going to give it another go.
