I came here today (Sunday) with my family of 5 (two under 3) for lunch. We decided beforehand to eat in and it was empty when we got there. We were greeted when we walked in by the young man behind the counter as we were getting the young ones settled. It was a simple vibe inside with long bench seats and huge tables. Ordering was easy, we got the boss family combo and a half pound of the pastrami (my favorite). The food was out quick, the service was great and they checked on us multiple times to make sure everything was good. The food was great, not too Smokey (like liquid smoke), and the different BBQ side options were excellent. The Mac n Cheese was some of the best I've ever had out. My kids enjoyed the meat and sides alike. I would recommend this to anyone who wants high quality BBQ right here in NJ. Absolutely the best bbq I've had in the state. It's so hard to get my wife to agree to get bbq because it's always terrible, but 1 bite of this and she said, "I forgot how much I like bbq when it's good." Brisket was just the way I like it, and apparently they asked my wife lean or fatty. Ribs were insane. Smokey, tender, rub just right. Didn't need bbq sauce at all. First time here, staff was so nice. They let us try samples when we asked. The pulled chicken wasn't the best but the pulled pork and ribs are so juicy and flavorful especially with their sauce. The bratwurst is also good but i just couldn't eat a lot of it, he also added in an extra rib just because for free. Alsoo before we left i was trying to buy 2 pieces of cornbread because they were fire and he let us have them for free. As a disclaimer bbq is one of my favorite foods so I've tried a bunch of places. The bbq here is extremely reasonably priced, but taste was just okay. My main issue is that it has no smoky flavor. Tasted like it was cooked on a pellet grill. I didn't smell any smoke in the store either which makes me suspicious. Ordered brisket. There were massive chunks of fat so it seems like they didn't trim it before smoking. As a result I couldn't see any of that beautiful bark. Brisket was way too mildly flavored and really depended on the sauce, which was good. Texture was a little rubbery. Street parking was fairly easy. read more

I've been here several times and here's what reorder: the brats and brisket. Both are excellent. The ribs are tender and I loved the rub but wish they weren't so fatty. I may give them another try. The chicken was dry and the pulled pork was good but I wasn't a huge fan of the pepper rub. It was a lot of pepper. My dad liked them though. The cornbread, baked beans and coleslaw are soo good! I'd definitely reorder them. Loved the Alabama sauce and KC. Everyone is friendly and attentive. There are a couple communal tables inside but I most order takeout. Place is very clean. After my negative experience with Mighty Quinn's BBQ, I still wanted to find a place in CNJ that provided really good BBQ, so gave Boss Hog a shot. So glad I did because it was night and day compared to Mighty Quinn. Ordered the Rib and Brisket Sampler, with Cornbread, Beans and Mac and Cheese. When the food arrived, it was still nice and warm. Brisket had great flavor and was not dry. Ribs had a great rub and practically fell off the bone and the sides I ordered were very good as well! Even when I re-heated the leftovers the next day, the brisket and ribs were still moist and tasted great! Will definitely be back here to try the rest of their menu! read more

Came here on a Friday afternoon. I always had this place on my yelp and was in the area and decided to finally try it. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. They explained the menu to me and gave recommendations. I got the pulled chicken sandwich with coleslaw on top, with beans and mac n cheese. The food came out quickly and was served to me since i decided to dine in. I tried all the sauces and the pineapple habanero was my favorite. The beans and the mac were good. This place is a pretty decent BBQ spot in South Plainfield . Would liked to have been greeted when we arrived but I guess staff aren't the warm and bubbly ones . A little small with two long communal tables . Seems they have A lot of take orders given the seating . We ordered Boss Hog Family combo which to be honest only feeds two and was a bit pricey for the amount of food we got . Brisket was on dry side and same for the pulled pork. The ribs were the best part of our meal ( very tender and the meat didn't stick to the bone ) . The pulled chicken was very dry and bland . The green beans were way over peppered but decent . The Mac n cheese was also decent . The corn bread was pretty good . The BBQ sauce options weren't that great no real depth of flavor just tastes like tomato. Before I write my review, I would just like to bring this page to Yelp's attention. There are several reviews that appear to be fake. I have noticed several reviews from people with different names and the same profile picture. Onto the review... I just finished getting my hair done and noticed a BBQ place across the street. Since it was lunchtime and I was hungry, I decided to check out Boss Hog Barbecue. I looked at the reviews and they seemed to have a good rating which made me even more excited to check them out. When I arrived, I was greeted and I placed my order. I ordered the chicken combo and a small order of brisket. The combo comes with two sides. I got the mac and cheese and baked beans. I thought the food was pretty mediocre. It was edible, but nothing that really excited me. I'm no bbq connoisseur, but I believe good bbq doesn't require sauces. You will definitely need sauce for this. The meats were a little bland. I saw a review where someone mentioned they used a lot of pepper on the meats. The pepper didn't bother me, but I wonder if they used any other seasoning besides that. Honestly, I've had better at a chain (Mission BBQ). The staff were nice though. read more

Summertime I always have a taste for bbq I live in south jersey area buying bbq.. you'll do better making it yourself But not at boss Hog wow 3rd time there and it been consistent. Ribs one of the best I ever had, brisket the best I ever eaten it was seasoned alway through not just on top sides green beans, I have to figure out that recipe at home. Nothing but great things to say about Steve, Tom and the BBQ they prepared. Steve and Tom where on time and ready to go. Steve even gave me a tutorial on how the smoker works. They both were very easy to talk to. The time to eat was 2 and they delivered right on time. Now, for the food, it was a hit. My guests could not get enough of the food. Tiny place, there's 2 picnic tables inside and some counter seats. They have a smoker outside so you know it's fresh. My brother had the pulled pork sandwich and baked beans, and they didn't skimp on the meat on a nice large roll. I went with the ribs & brisket platter, with mac & cheese and Southern green beans. I got the sampler which was Pulled Pork, pulled chicken, ribs and brisket and 4 sides. This basically completed the menu. Pretty much everything is weighed to proportion. So I'll say it's not really a lot of meat when you look at it. The ribs and brisket was the best of the four meats. Smoked flavor for sure. The pulled chicken and pork was not so good I think it's because he was not cutting and pulling it with the grain. So either was as tender. The many sauces. Each had a different taste, spiciness and liking for me. The boss sauce being more to my taste. The sides were seasoned and tasty the greens beans the best of the 4 I had. I would not be a reg hear. If I could give this place 1000 stars I would. I have never had the chance to stop by for regular dining hours, however, this is the second year in a row where I've pre-ordered their smoked turkey and sides for my Thanksgiving functions. This year, I actually placed a very late order (I appreciate Mark for still taking the order despite my lack of preparation). I arrived and long story short, just provided the most amazing service I could have asked for. They even brought all the food out to my car. Little things like this go a long way in the restaurant industry and now I will make it a point to stop by for lunch in the coming weeks+months. This place is the real deal. Jersey is not known for it's BBQ and 95% of the places around here are either horrible or Portuguese BBQ which is not what i'm interested in at all. Yes the menu is limited but what they have is all spot on. The ribs are cooked to perfection - the meat falling off the bone. No need for any sauce, it's the perfect dry rub. Everything is juicy, seasoned well, and super tasty :-) Brisket, pastrami, turkey, brats, chicken, ribs, and pulled pork are excellent. Only thing I haven't tried was pulled chicken because I keep opting for the chicken leg quarters or turkey over and over! The Mac and cheese isn't anything to write home about, but it wasn't Kraft either, and I greatly appreciate that. Bosshog BBQ was a delightful experience for me. The brisket was very tender and pretty much falling apart which made it easy to eat and very delicious. I also ordered a side of Mac and cheese which was very good.
