Vegan ramen was okay and on the thicker side, I appreciate that they do now keep a meatless option on the menu as when they first opened they did not always include one in their rotation. Enmi ramen was lighter though definitely still had strong pork broth taste. Sushi was fair but overall underwhelming. Strangely, croquettes tasted better after we let them sit for a while than when they first came out - initially they did not taste very strongly of crab and did not have much taste at all. I have been here twice and the food has been consistently good. The music was too loud for any conversation during their weekend nights. I came back when it was still daylight and the restaurant was peaceful. Ramen and hand roll were great both time. Noddle was good, broth was balance. The Rice and fish was good. You can't go wrong ordering the ramen and the hand rolls. I also try the croquettes. Each piece is a different flavor. I guess you just roulette it if you are sharing with other people.They look the same on the outside. The curry was my favorite. The corn was bland. The pumpkin was on the sweeter side. I had a fantastic experience getting lunch here! Not too crowded, bathroom was clean, decor is nice and there's plenty of seating for both solo/2-3 people and larger groups. Service was very fast and the server was extremely kind and attentive. The food was delicious and a good value for the serving sizes. I got the lunch special which I would definitely recommend. The umami ramen is SO GOOD, the texture of the noodles was absolutely perfect. I got the green salad, I wasn't a fan but the table next to me got the chashu rice and really liked it, that's what I would opt for next time. I took up the Boston Ramen Crawl and Bosso Ramen was the first place on my list and I'm glad for this crawl as it introduced me to new ramen shops. Bosso was #1 on the crawl and it was the beginning of their lunch hour. Nestled in Harvard Sq., the restaurant's decor had modern and warm feel to it. Lots of wood and an earthy feel, hence the tavern name. I ordered their umami ramen. It was beautifully presented, all the ingredients were delicately placed atop the ramen that peeked through the light broth. The half soft egg had a dusting of something tantalizing, the sliced scallion and kikurage (mushroom) lead to diced red onion at the end. The ramen was straight and silky and the broth was flavorful. The thin slices of pork were tasty. My only complaint was that the serving size was on the small side so be prepared to order extra noodles if you are hungry. I walked in with really high hopes since Bosso had such cool vibes aand then I left not impressed. The drinks were really good and the appetizers were decent- but pretty small portions. However, the ramen really had me disappointed. The meat was kind of dry and there was not really many other toppings that were included. I was full and happy with the soup and noodle quality but it wasn't a satisfying ramen bowl. The black sesame ice cream WAS AMAZING though. I love the Yelp community, but they're always wrong. Especially when it comes to Harvard Square. Donuts the shape, color and taste of sponges - 5 stars. Delicious, carefully crafted bowls of soup magic - 4 stars. Bosso is unique in that not only is it a good ramen place, it's also a good place. Like, a place you want to actually spend time in. Contrast that to Santouka, Yume Wo Katare, all the nonsense in Boston where people wait in line to have people put corn in their ramen. It's so classy you can almost forget the reason you're there is to stick your face in a bowl of pork fat. They have a really nice selection of sake and a staff that's more than willing to tell you why, no, they will not warm it up for you, you philistine. The ramen itself is really interesting. I'm not going to say it's authentic or traditional because anyone concerned with that in Harvard square needs to look around. There's some interesting ones in there like the one with tomatoes (sanmi) and the yuzu one (enmi). Each is pretty different and it's a little more exciting than just the standard miso or tonkotsu types. This isn't really a quick bite place, there are other nice ramen shops for that (Menya Jiro, Santouka if you're desperate). But this is a one you can take a date. If they don't mind you slurping, they're a keeper. The sushi hand rolls are...cute. I wouldn't say they're worth it, though. This was disappointing as sushi makes up almost half of the menu. We were also seated so close to another table of two women that we may has well have joined in on their conversation for the whole dinner. Came here as a party of two a little before 12:30pm on a Saturday. The place was pretty much empty, but gradually filled up by the time we left. I really appreciate the decor and how cozy, yet modern it feels. There's a QR code at your table for you to order, but a paper menu is available upon request (it has more detailed descriptions for specific dishes). We split the gyoza and each ordered our own lunch specials. In addition to my umami ramen, I also got the eel sushi, which I was surprised came with egg as well. For dessert we split a matcha ice cream. I was really pleased with the food, which was more than enough to fill us. I would definitely come back, especially considering how value the lunch special is. The hostess/server was also really friendly. This spot is the best spot to get ramen in Harvard Square! Their sushi is even more impressive. The portions (both ramen and sushi) are on the smaller side. I tried the yuzu scallop sushi ($8) which had a very fresh, buttery piece of raw scallop on top. I was extremely impressed by their sushi rice-- each grain held its own while being perfectly cooked through and chewy. They are not shy about adding vinegar to their rice, but it's not overly sour. The combination of savory, tart sushi rice with fresh scallops and crispy nori really hit the spot. We got the umami ($16) and karami ($18) ramen. The umami ramen came with thin noodles while the karami ramen came with thick noodles. The thin noodles tasted more al dente while the thick noodles were chewier and bouncier. The black garlic oil in the umami ramen added a savory kick without being pungent. I felt like the flavor of the umami broth was much more complex than the karami, which wasn't spicy at all to me. Both ramen bowls came with some thin, tender slices of chashu pork. I personally prefer fattier cuts of chashu but I appreciated that the chashu here could melt in your mouth. The ground pork/beef in the karami ramen was forgettable. I could see myself coming back for their sushi since it is made so well here! The service was very attentive, our water glasses were never empty, and our dishes were always bussed quickly (without being too rushed). The food was overall very good! The Ponzu shishito leaned heavily on soy and less on citrus, and they were slightly drowning in the sauce at the bottom of the bowl. The karaage was crispy and juicy! The vibe of this place is amazing. It's small and cozy and when you enter, everyone yells "welcome to Bosso". You feel like your family here. You can see into the kitchen, which is rare in Boston! I got the vegan ramen which had soy meat. I'm usually not a fan but this soy meat had an umami punch of flavor that was a nice contrast again the citrusy broth. This place is literal fire emoji - so good! We came here to celebrate a friend's graduation and we're able to snag a reservation the night before. The exterior of the restaurant looked super sleek and the inside was modern and clean. They have a rotating menu that changes day to day based on the fresh ingredients available. For sake, there were several portion sizes (cup, share, or bottle) - the "share" size was perfect for 3 people without having to go all-in on a bottle. For apps, we really enjoyed the chicken karaage (some of the best I've had in Boston!) and shishito peppers. We also tried one of their salmon sushi rolls which was good but probably wouldn't get again. The star of the show was the umami ramen - literal perfection in a bowl! The broth was so delicious and the toppings were simple but paired nicely. There were two thin slices of pork that I thought tasted more like beef but were nonetheless wonderful. We finished the meal by trying their black sesame and matcha ice creams - I'm normally a huge matcha fan but I actually liked the black sesame more (both were great though)! Read this as a 3.5 review. I got handrolls and ramen, but I like the handrolls more. 4/5 for handrolls, 3/5 for the ramen. We got 4 different handrolls. Spicy Salmon ($6.5) and Yuzu Scallop ($7) were my favorites. Unagiinu Eel ($8) was good, but a bit on the sweeter side. The Torotaku ($6.5) was a miss for me - I couldn't taste much of the fatty tuna. Umami Ramen ($15) Broth was rich in pork flavor and the noodles were perfectly al dente. However, I wasn't a fan of the toppings. The flavored egg wasn't like the typical ramen egg with the soft gooey yolk and it had a strange after-taste. There were only 2 thin slices of chashu which were leaner than I expected. Spicy Norisuke ($17) The broth was spicy but light in pork flavor. The portion was smaller than the cheaper Unami Ramen and this one had no egg. I think for the price, it should at least have an egg. Bosso Ramen Tavern is a super cute ramen restaurant with a beautiful interior aesthetic. I went for the first time today and it was amazing! I got the spicy salmon handroll, yuzu scallop handroll, tuna avocado handroll (not pictured), and karami ramen. All three handrolls were great and a good size for the price and I don't think I could pick a favorite. Karami ramen was some of the best ramen I've ever had. The broth was so flavorful and the ground pork and cha siu were great additions. Everything about this bowl was perfect but the noodles were the highlight. Thick, chewy yellow wavy ramen noodles made this ramen next level. I will definitely be coming back to try the other ramens/handrolls and to have the karami ramen again! I looked at Yelp for new restaurants to try before visiting Boston and Bosso was on my list. They now offer online reservations through Resy. I came when it opened and there were a few other patrons. I sat on the counter where there's an open kitchen; I definitely recommend sitting on the counter. I only ordered handrolls: torotaku, spicy salmon and yuzu scallop. My favorite was the spicy salmon, but nothing mind blowing. I would maybe order the spicy salmon again, but not the torotaku and yuzu scallop. It was mostly rice with little fish/seafood, where some bites was just rice and nori. I do like the presentation. Next time, I would skip the handrolls and try the other dishes. Service was great, food came quickly and the interior was modern and simple. I would rate it a 3.5/5 but will round up to a 4/5. read more

The taste was very heavy and masked a lot of the flavor. Wasn't a big fan. Big disappointment was that sushi menu wasn't available that day. That was a big point of us going since we read the reviews and the pics of the sushi looked really good! This place is so underrated, my mom and I had an absolute EXPERIENCE with this food. Walking in, the staff were super welcoming, and it's the perfect space to go on a nice but not stuffy dinner in a small group setting. The menu is kind of confusing, and leaves out a lot of information that I had to clarify. For example, the ramen section doesn't list the common topping of pork or what kind of broth is used. The sushi section oddly just says "sushi" (without a size description) even though everything is a hand roll--they could have been more specific. I'm familiar with Japanese cuisine, but definitely would have benefited from more descriptions on the appetizers. In any case, our waiter was very helpful with my questions! Onto the FOOD--everything was really really good! Enmi ramen: 4.5/5. This was my ramen, and it was so nourishing! I do wish the yuzu flavor was stronger given that's what is advertised, but nonetheless it was a comforting and delightful bowl. I really like the bite that their thin noodles have. Umami ramen: 4.5/5. My mom's ramen, and she loved it! It's your classic ramen with all the fixings. I think it might have been too heavy for me personally to have a full bowl of, but it was perfect for her. Chicken karaage: 4.5/5. Tender and well fried, but nothing super special! This was a great side dish to pair with the ramen. Torotaku fatty tuna hand roll: 2/5. Sadly this one had really stale seaweed, you could smell it from a good distance away. Where to begin? My visit to Bosso was a mixed bag, to say the least. Since they opened a couple of weeks ago, they've been super popular as the newest ramen spot in the neighbourhood, and when my friend and I showed up just before opening at 5pm on a Saturday, there was already a line gradually forming outside the door. That's when things started getting a little odd. First, it struck me as unusual that we (along with many other parties) were asked to wait near the entrance for around 5 to 10 minutes, despite a majority of the tables being empty. I'm guessing that it might be just to space out how many tables were ordering all at once, but it's unclear why we couldn't have waited after being seated. It was also very unusual that they seem to print brand new paper menus daily, updating the selection based on what they have available for that day; and it was disappointing in particular that on the day we went, the menu was about half its normal length - only offering 1 type of ramen and a handful of appetisers - and noted some of their supply issues. We started with the chicken karaage, which was by far the highlight of our meal. The chicken was delicious and juicy with a wonderful breading and texture. We also had two of the hand rolls: my friend's spicy salmon roll was quite tasty, but my torotaku was more underwhelming, with the tuna tasting a bit old. (I liked the complementing flavour and texture of the pickled radishes, though.) Unfortunately, the karami ramen (indeed, the only option that day) was nothing to write home about. The portion size was unusually small, the noodles were too hard (even for my al dente preference), and the broth was extremely salty and not really flavourful. The ground beef/pork didn't taste fresh at all, and the singular slice of chashu pork was bland. Ambience was a bit hectic with really loud music and the staff's periodic chorus whenever anyone arrived or left (which felt a bit uncomfortable and forced here). Service was fine but disorganised - the servers seemed quite uncoordinated and at least a few times, multiple waiters came by for the same reason (to take our order, give us the cheque, etc.) It's already been a few weeks since opening, so I'm a little hesitant to ascribe all of these bumps to their inexperience, especially the tragically reduced menu. For the quantity and quality of food, price point was really high ($18 for a small ramen?!). I think I'll come back in the future - I do want to try some of their other ramen options - but I might give it a while for things to settle down first :P read more

I was excited to try something new in the square! This was really busy: When we arrived at 6:20 pm on Friday, the host said the wait would be an hour. You can wait indoors; there are tables to stand at where you can order drinks. Heads up: the host says there's no calling system, so you need to wait nearby (either indoors or standing outside) for a table. I found this weird; it's 2022, and there are a lot of systems available to make this easier. One good thing: the wait ended up being closer to 30 minutes. I started off with a sake cocktail. I got the one that had Bosso in the name, thinking it'd be good or else they wouldn't put their name on it. It had curaçao; see the blue drink. It tasted like a slightly spiked Gatorade. It was $9.5. The glass was fairly small. When my partner and I were seated, we were in front of the bar. Heads up: most drinks are made with store bought juice (e.g., Simply Orange brand). It's $6 for a glass of juice here. We started off with some apps: "tsunami". Some of the old menus I've seen on Yelp have said it's $9 for one, $25 for three, or $40 for five. It's now all $9 for one. I tried the following: - Smoked salmon potesala. This is quite literally smoked salmon wrapped around potato salad, with some roe on top. It wasn't a mind blowing combination; I feel that some sauce would have helped a lot. It otherwise just tastes as described: smoked salmon and potato salad. - Umami chicken karaage. This was really juicy, and flavorful. It could maybe have used a sauce. - Ume fried gyoza. The presentation was really nice! The sauce (mayo-based?) didn't stick very well. It was deep fried, rather than pan fried. Next, we got the hand rolls. Note: By 6:50 pm on a Friday night, they had sold out of ramen. In some old menus, I've seen multiple varieties of ramen: umami, enmi, karami, sanmi, vegan miso. Today, there was only karami, which I didn't get to try because they'd sold out. I found it weird that a place with ramen in the name would only have one variety of ramen available. The hand rolls that we got included: - Spicy salmon ($6.5). This was the highlight. Our waiter recommended it, and I would go for it again. - Unigyu ($8). I would not recommend this, although our waiter recommended it. I've seen mixed reviews from other Yelpers, but was intrigued by the description (sea urchin and beef) to try it. There was barely any sea urchin flavor, which suggests that it's either not good sea urchin or there isn't a lot of sea urchin, relative to the beef. Moreover, the beef was really small in portion too. This felt almost like a rice wrap, with the protein as an afterthought. - Torotaku ($6.5). Tuna with pickled radish. This was alright. It's slightly fatty tuna, and I could taste both the tuna and the radish. - Yuzu scallop ($7). This was alright too. I felt that I could taste the same things here. The service was really nice throughout. They filled our water up a lot, and answered all questions we had. In sum, there were some hits and some misses. I would come again to try the umami ramen, which some Yelp reviewers seem to really like, but it appears difficult to determine when the menu will have that or not. They also serve hand rolls which I love and always get when I come. The dessert with the sweet potato is also a nice touch. The only downside is the quality seems to vary of the times I did visit. One time the hand rolls had way too much rice and the ramen broth was too salty. This place feels very catered towards rich white people / stereotypical Harvard Square? Food was okay but very overpriced. Egg and eel hand roll - the egg overpowered the very little amount of eel. I love and crave unagi but this did not satisfy that craving at all. 2/5 Yuzu scallop hand roll - scallops were very sweet and fresh! But it was chopped up and the rice was awfully sweet too so everything was just a homogenous glob. The ratio of filling to rice is also disappointingly low, you end up with so much rice on the bottom and soggy nori that's hard to bite through. 2/5 Shishito - seasoned with ponzu, solid and basic. 3/5 Chicken karaage - highlight of the night! The breading was not too thick, light and delicately crispy but could have been crunchier. The meat itself was tender, juicy, succulent with gelatinous bits and nice briney flavor. The broth was porky and nostalgic tasting but thinner in viscosity so maybe the broth isn't stewed for that long to extract all the collagen?
