Beacon Hill doesn't offer many options for local barbers. After trying the few options in the neighborhood I found Boston Barber Co. across from the state house and haven't gone anywhere else since. I've sat with each of the barbers and they are all very good at their craft. I have a wicked bad cowlick in the back of my head - which has been butchered elsewhere - and they've all known exactly how to work around that potential challenge. They listen to my requests, ask questions as they cut, and are happy to be chatty or silent depending on your mood. My only complaint is that they aren't open on Saturdays, but obviously that hasn't kept me from finding the time during the week to get there. In fact, I'm off to get my 15th consecutive haircut there at 9am today. read more

I was back and forth on whether I liked this place for a while. It's right near my office so it's easy to pop in for a cut mid-day and I've been doing so for the last ~7 months so I feel like I have a pretty good sample size of experiences here. Unfortunately, I feel like the quality of the cut is a bit of a dice roll. I've gotten outstanding cuts here (Christine, who no longer works there, was awesome) and I've gotten pretty average cuts as well. It's completely dependent on who cuts your hair and how busy the place is. I have a pretty easy haircut and always try to be as clear as possible about what I'm looking for but every time it comes out a little differently. The most recent visit, I was rushed through super quickly (in and out of the chair in less than 15 minutes) and the result was a little bit sloppy. I now posses a fun little cow lick that should persist for at least 3-4 weeks and the back is also a little uneven. If you find a barber here you like and gives a consistent cut then this is a great place - good atmosphere, good location, pretty reasonably priced. Christine was great but I can't seem to find a good replacement for her now among the barbers that seem to shuffle in and out. read more

Was never able to find a good, consistent barber since i moved back to Boston. Went to the north end location on recommendations from friends and was very pleased with the result. WONDERFUL I needed help deciding what haircut would look best with my face, and they were really honest about what would and would not work. So, for only $2 more than my normal barber, I got a fantastic haircut and made some awesome new friends! In addition, the lady that cut my hair gave me perfect advise on how to style my hair after the cut! Several of my friends have started making the trip from BU to downtown just for this place because it's relatively inexpensive ($18 for a haircut) and they give the most stylish haircuts in town. read more

Boston Barber Shop is a great barber shop with friendly staff! I've taken my son in here several times for a haircut and it always comes out perfect! The staff was extremely welcoming and offered drinks and friendly conversation as I waited with my son for a haircut! This is a "man's-man" barber. Simple and effective system for walk-ins. Just head in to too of stairs where the clipboard is, put your name in and head downstairs to waiting area. Plenty if room to do some work while you wait, or watch TV. Steve was my barber. He really took his time, working diligently the whole way. I got a too-notch haircut and neck cleanup for only $25. This place is awesome, period. I have searched far and wide using word of mouth and online reviews for a barbershop that lives up to my standards, I can rest at last. Their secret? They actually listen to what you want done, deliver based on what you communicate, and don't rush you out the door. My requests are extremely simple and I always communicate clearly (skin tight fade in the back, 1 up to a 3 on the sides, blend in top) easy right? So when I don't get what I want I think it's fair that I don't go back, end of story. My biggest frustration of all time is when a barber lines up my beard or the side of my head without asking. I walked in with my natural hairline, why am I walking out looking like Drake when that's very clearly not my style? This will NEVER happen to you here. I have had several cuts with three different barbers and I always walk out very happy. Benny: My go to. He's a master barber for sure. Attention to detail is top notch and I have never spent less than 30 mins with him. Richie (RIP): First time I came here I got Richie. Wow, I don't think I've been more terrified in my life. As I saw him walk out of the back room after clearly making love to a buff chic calzone, the remains on his hands and other parts of his body you wouldn't think possible, I said to myself... Might as well pack it in, how did I manage to get this guy. Mind you I had already read up on the barbers and Richie was exactly the guy I did not want because he was new. Turns out he gave me exactly what I asked for despite having buffalo sauce in my hair for sure I thought he did a great job... And if it wasn't for Richie I would not have returned, so Boston Barber Co has him to thank for one more life long customer. Francisco: Gave me exactly what I asked for although he never spoke a word to me. This place has a couple very hard to find attributes that push it over the top good and just one that hold it back from HOF status as the man amongst boys of all barbershops. First, the written wait list: no anxiety, no confusion, you choose your barber that's it. Second, if you are in a rush and can't wait for who you want you can rest assured that you will not walk out looking like Avici... Unless that's what you're going for, a true rarity. Usually barbershops have one barber and a bunch of other jerks who just show up to ruin your day. The one knock against this place... I've played team sports my whole life (football, lacrosse, hockey, you name it) and played four years of college hockey. I have never in my entire life endured more vulgarity or profanity as I do the 30-40 minutes I spend in this shop ever other week. I'm not easily embarrassed and I usually enjoy partaking in some x-rated looker room talk...this isn't that. The things that are said here have me longing for a door to hide behind. It's like it's not real life, like a bad movie that you can't believe you're watching. Come on guys, turn it down a notch (or 12) I'm begging you. That aside this place has won me over and I am no easy critic. I hope you take this review in the best possible way. They have taken the anxiety out of finding a place to get a fresh cut. Excellent place for walk-in men's haircut. Ask for Steve. He is an artist and very carefully listens to your preferences. I was just traveling thru the city for interviews and found this place online. I am always very very picky about haircuts but I had to get this cut before an interview. Rest assured that this place is worth the solid online reviews. Very clean, efficient but busy even on a weekday (so show up early or anticipate a decent wait - worth the wait imho because they take time to make sure each cut is done well). The new guy sucks. First, I thought he was on meth. He was rushing with the clippers around my head and super rough. I've gotten my hair cut from 4 other barbers there and they're never that rough or in a rush. So... I asked him if he was in a rush. Big mistake. The haircut is a good haircut. But he started with the retaliatory behavior similar to when waiters spit in your food. Every time he went to wipe hair off my face with a brush, he was hitting me in the face with the brush. He went line me up and smeared shave cream all over my face and neck. Then only lined up around my ears. He dragged the clippers all over my neck scratching the hell out of me. The finale was the best part. He loosened up the cape and started letting hair fall all over my shirt. Awesome. I was getting a haircut at lunch time. He started pulling my collar back and then shaving my neck. Then he started shaving the top of my back. He was really determined to make me itchy. I want to go to a professional barber shop. People who know what they're doing and practice their craft. Not some guy trying to churn through haircuts to make more money and beating me up / screwing with me in the process. I tipped him because I worked in the service industry. I get it. That's also how I can tell he was jerking me around. I really liked going there because everyone was so good. But this guy sucked. My experience today was enough to finally create a yelp account. I chose this shop because it had decent reviews and was close to my office. It's right at the top of Beacon Hill in a great neighborhood, it looks nice from the outside and has the feel of a pretty classic barber shop on the inside. I should have known better based on how much more the stylists were in socializing with each other instead of being attentive to the clients but I went ahead anyway. Well, my stylist asked me what I wanted, then told me she was done. The 15-20 minutes in between I had to listen to her socialize with the other stylist and a male with his young child who seemed to just be hanging out. I'm usually fine with colorful language but it got uncomfortable listening to them repeatedly say words like "a--hole", "c-nt", "sh-t", and hearing about the dudes probation officer. I might not have minded so much but it was clear that my stylist wasn't giving me even a tenth of her attention. In the end, the haircut is ok, neither at the top nor the bottom, but sadly the experience will keep me from going back. read more

It wasn't worth the wait, too bad. I was thrilled to see fantastic reviews but only to be extremely disappointed. Barbers felt entitled to bad mouth customers in front of others. Customer service is bad. Cut was uneven, crooked and I had to make multiple requests to fix the length. Please don't lie and say you can cut then in the midst of cutting, tell me my hair type is different and it cannot be accomplished. I tip well because my parents raised me well but I wouldn't recommend this place. The wait is not worth it. The cut price isn't worth it. I recommend Barbers Den. Check them out :) read more

The barber who delivered this news shrugged when I asked why and then said they were short staffed, which would make sense if they didn't have barbers on every chair. I USED to go here all the time...now I need a bodyguard... I got there and was PREPARED to wait For a Barber. What I was not prepared for was what happened after my hair cut. I was somewhat pressed for time but I still managed to squeeze myself in. I have no problem with barbers socializing, but when they are leaning against the wall and chatting AT LENGTH, about extremely inappropriate topics, I take issue. It's not bad enough that they have hustler and playboy in the waiting areaS of this popular barbershop in a prestigious location in Boston, but when I hinted that I was pressed for time and that I had to be at work at a certain point, they just dismissed it. The real issue happens at the end.. When I was walking out of the Barber shop, I was approached by one of the managers who are standing outside. He told me it only took 20 minutes to get my haircut, and that it was very rude for me to clear my throat. He proceeded to tell me that the Barber's gave me 100% of their time, which is not true, and to "never come to his FUCKING barber shop again." That's right, folks, he SWORE at me. I told him I was pressed for time, and while I do not have a problem with socializing, when you're taking a coffee break with someone in your chair...time to reprioritize....he continued to blatantly violate my personal space, and continued to raise his voice, and continued to swear...i simply told him to "cool it," and he SCREAMED, RIGHT IN MY EAR, that he's going to "knock my FUCKING brains out..." mind you, there were over a half dozen witnesses to this....didnt stop him.. I'm all of 180 lbs, this guy exceeded 300 lbs and was all muscle, probably in the marines. Police were involved!!! But were unable to do anything...so here's the next best thing. He threatened me He SWORE at me He intimidated me He followed me down the SIDEWALK, There were witnesses This is a where the creme-de-la-creme go, and therefore should be a TOUCH more personable...but no... Threatening and swearing at me because I CLEARED MY THROAT.... Big man....compensating for other small body parts, I'm sure....hence the supply of PORNO mags at this location.
