Don't know how we have been moved to the area this long and had no idea about this place!! So this place is nestled in Arnold in a house. There is only 7 tables, but they do take reservations. It is a little darker and industrial which is what I prefer. They also have a bar with a decent cocktail program. I get the sense that there are regulars that become family. The food though is the star. They do operate under a smallish menu, but they do it well. I suspect the chefs are professionally trained as I felt like I was at a high end resturant downtown. We go salads and they were both phenomenal. I want to go back for the pasta where they put it in the cheese wheel to make the sauce. I will be back! read more

I'm talking you won't believe how good! You can watch Chef Scott working his magic at the grill while seated at one of the tables off the well-stocked bar. Looking around your can see elements of the dive bar remnants re-fashioned into a now haven the most persnickety foodie will love. We enjoyed...savored...mussels, crabcakes, Tuna Crudo with a fabulous pickled seaweed garnish, and I had a queso burger that was delicious and served with a Sriracha slaw (Best. Ever!!!) Wow. Just wow. Cacio e Pepe with Cajun shrimp is outstanding. Wedge salad is amazing as well & enough to share. You won't want to share the pasta and shrimp though. Drinks were amazing. Staff was friendly and attentive. It's small but we've always found seats- even if we sit at the bar. Food was amazing. I had the Pull My Piggy tacos. Melted in the mouth and bursting with flavor. Came with a choice of sides; salad, fingerling potatoes or siracha slaw. I chose the salad, a little difficult to stab with the fork but was fresh with no wilting. (Something other eateries can't seem to understand) Service was great, friendly and accommodating. The only problem was the noise level, very very loud. Impossible to have a conversation without shouting. Otherwise I would have given 5 stars. A great place to eat, and be on your phone. We don't get to New Ken often so this is only our second time here. I am so glad we made the decision to stop in for dinner and drinks. Firstly, the decor in this little place is very industrial and there are some great art molds on the walls. The bartender came over right away, gave us menus and got us some water. It was infused with cucumbers which was refreshing! My husband ordered the Blackberry Old Fashioned and I got one of the two specialty drinks- MALIBU BARBIE!! I was so excited but even more so when it arrived (see picture). The menu is not large, but there is something for everyone. As we were looking it over my husband called the chef over to see what his favorite meal was and he hands down recommended their signature dish-Cacio E Pepe. It is Imported Bucatini Pasta, Cajun Cream Sauce, Roasted Garlic and Fresh Herbs all spun together in an Imported with Pecorino Romano. We started with a wedge salad split and it was incredible. It had candied bacon, homemade blue cheese dressing, piece of blue cheese and roasted tomatoes. I could make this any everyday staple! We took the chefs suggestion and has the pasta- salmon for hubby and I had the chicken...WOW it knocked our socks off!!! We can't wait to be back in the area to stop in again. read more

I went to this place with some friends over the weekend and it was worth going to! It's kind of out of the way if you live in the city but it's worth the drive. The parking isn't great but there is a small parking not and street parking. The space is small and you more than likely will need to make a reservation. The drinks and food were great! I would recommend the Cacio e Pepe pasta that is pasta spun in a giant cheese wheel! It's SO cheesy and delicious! read more

This place is great. We had amazing food provided by a creative kitchen staff with what looks like good management. The front of house staff were exceptional and the service was fast. I started the night with one other person and eventually we turned into 5, usually something I would never do. I have worked in, and have many friends who work in the restaurant service industry. We did not experience anything besides friendliness, and welcomeness from everyone here. Mussels. Let me just say that I love mussels but they are such a cumbersome restaurant order for diners and staff in a restaurant. Lot's of shells, typically tons of broth left over that the diner wants to take home, usually to throw away or try to reuse. This dish broke that mold. It made perfect sense. There was just enough sauce for the bread and the mussels and a spoon was provided without inquiry. All mussels were open, not closed and dead or undercooked. Everything was cleaned and prepared fresh. This is rare and I really respected this. They were a little over cooked but I have no problem with this. Better safe than sorry and with a great sauce everyone free from grit everyone is happy. Nicoise Salad. I loved this. Dressing is a balsamic glaze, all veg is fresh and clean. The raw sushi grade tuna is a great addition, something that warms my heart. I love creative spins on a classic recipes and the chef is certainly doing this here. Crab Cakes. Best I've ever had. My partner agreed. I've had a lot of crab cakes. Let's take everyone into consideration though. If the reason you order crab cakes is to have something that is deep fried, filled with, mayo, canned relish and breadcrumbs ... go somewhere else. This crab cake is totally fresh and real, only the needed amount of filler is used and this is a rare case in the crab cake genre. This place is great! If you don't live in the area, it is certainly worth a bit of a drive if you are looking to have an enjoyable experience with a friendly group of people around you. read more

3rd time I've eaten here. Always excellent food. I had the special " I'm not good at names" was a marinated steak ( done rare) sandwich with fingerling potatoes. My Aunt had the chicken sandwich with the side salad. The chicken was thick, juicy and tender. The service was amazing. I wasn't sure we'd be able to eat there because of my Aunts mobility issues. No problem getting into the restaurant but the high tops were a challenge. The bartender brought her step ladder over and helped my Aunt to get seated. She went above and beyond to show care and compassion. Even tough my Aunt is 92 she loved the Industrial Design. Wonderful people, delicious food and all around great place. Thank you! read more

A small, exclusive and somewhat pricey (compared to other nearby venus) local semi-hipster semi-fine-dining spot that opened in a smokey old dive bar. The decor is "industrial chic" and the food is crafted not cooked. My two experiences here have been positive, though one appetizer dish seemed a bit under my expectations, the others have been exemplary. Pittsburgh is known for its "fries on steak/chicken salad", and botL elevates this to a new level. While most "steak salads" from nearby pizza places use diamond cut "steak-um" style thin cut beef, botL uses real steak, and subs the fries for roasted tiny potatoes. This is an A+ menu item, as it not only is implemented well but is also a local staple done differently and yet better, which is hard to believe. You will probably need a reservation. The place is not big and fills up quickly. And although they have a bar, it's really a place to not only drink but also dine. The open kitchen concept is grand: you'll watch the chefs and bartenders work together right out in plain view, not hidden behind a ticket window. Their cocktail specials are often just that - special. Sometimes, you'll get something truly amazing, but there are one or two offerings that are better than others. The key to botL's successful implementation is fresh ingredients, creativity and craftsmanship. We've not seen any issues with consistency, which is sometimes the unintended consequence of creative cookery. Wedge salad wasn't bad. I don't know that adding steak or salmon would have helped it much, but I like to see a good Wedge. However, I expect that wedge to be a big ol' wedge. I think the roasting of the tomatoes could have been skipped, but I have had lots of wedge salads. It's good to see it on the menu, regardless. The lackluster items we found were: The hummos plate. Having been to many wonderful Mediterranean restaurants around Pittsburgh, this one was not on par with what this kind of thing could be. I'd pay a few dollars more to see an amazing plate of hummos, rather than this item which was as described but nothing special. I don't think the Naan is warranted, as warm Pita can be equally stimulating, is cheaper, keeps longer and is less calories. The "New Ken cuban" sandwich is basically a panini. All of the sandwiches are "panini" style. While I cannot speak for the other sandwiches, I personally don't like panini. Perhaps this biases me, but I feel like the panini is not the reason I didn't like them. While a panini does feel like a "kid's sandwich" perhaps, if the food is good it will shine through even if delivered this way. Not the most authentic, nor creative, in our opinion. It was described beautifully on the menu but didn't impress. The brisket was brisket but it wasn't anything to write home about. The "mojo" was also a bit underwhelming, as it was a vinegar-based dipping sauce that just didn't impress. Since this is one of the more expensive sandwiches, we'd rather pay slightly more for something as amazing as the Pittsburgh Steak Salad. It's basically flavorless, as I find "panini" to be, and I think that's because they aren't balancing the flavors of all of their ingredients. I should taste the brisket complemented by some amazing mustard, not some mustard hiding the lackluster brisket, you know? Also the quantity of brisket -- this sandwich has both ham and brisket. I think this competes in a bad way, and one may detract from the other in quantity and quality of both items. I feel like people who implement "cubans" in their own way are missing the point. It's one of the most ruined items from Little Havana. Once you visit Miami and experience the amazing foods of Cuba, you might come back and rethink how to include this wonderful ethnic food in your restaurant. I'd rather see a truly unique sandwich, made for the region, than something claiming to be the "Local" "from Cuba" sandwich. Let me just say, it's equal to what I expect from a "Midwestern Cuban" at a local college deli. This needs further thought and "elevation" just like the Pittsburgh Salad. read more

The only problem is Scott (head chef) has been absent the last five times we've been here and now it's not a coincidence that the food quality has suffered greatly. I took a trip across town to visit botL over Christmas break. The atmosphere is comfortable and classy. Sean the owner said he wanted to design a place where women would feel comfortable going to, and I definitely did! I got an old-fashioned which was made very well, the soup, and the salmon BLT. My friend got the Cuban sandwich and really liked it. The BLT was good, but a little overdone for my preference, and could have used a little more seasoning. Omg! I came into town late one night for work. I stopped here because the reviews looked good and it was one of the only places open and it's the best decision I could have made. They went above and beyond to make a "tourist" feel welcomed. They didn't have to serve me due to the time I arrived but not only did they serve me but they gave me recommendations to check out in the city. The short rib tacos were delicious! I've driven past this place numerous times, but apparently never noticed it until it was pointed out by a coworker. We went as a large group for drinks and a late lunch. I didn't order any alcoholic drink, but the rest of the party was pretty happy with the drinks they received. Also, one of the folks made a request that wasn't on the drink list and they happy made that happen. The table shared a charcuterie board that had a mix of cheese, a nice portion of sliced meats, and some mixes of fruit and nuts. They served it with a portion of warm pita. I thought it was good overall, and the table finished it off completely, which is never a bad sign. Another person ordered a wedge salad and it came out presented pretty nicely along with a nice amount of a homemade blue cheese dressing and he said it was delicious. They had a selection of cheesecake for dessert and I tried the sole of a berry cheesecake and a crepe brûlée cheesecake. I thought the desserts were ok, but the rest of table spoke highly of theirs, so the majority of the table raves about the desserts. This place is very close to me, the staff was very nice, and I like the atmosphere, so I hope to go back again and try an actual meal. I live within walking distance and eat here regularly. As a single woman, I feel safe as they do not tolerate people getting ignorant. I am so happy I live in a neighborhood with Botl in it.
