Yesterday I had one of the most thorough eye examinations I have ever had, and this is over 50 years of vision correction and includes 20+ years of care at an academic medical center. I went into Botwin yesterday with my broken glasses, expecting to be buying new ones. Ashley (I think) suggested she would try to "shrink wrap" them for me to see if that would work. She came back, instead, with my lenses (not in the best condition but serviceable) in a new set of frames. Nothing fancy, utilitarian though. And it was no charge. Worst experience I've ever had, could not believe how horrible Dr. Botwin treated my family and I. So sad to think that even though we had been patients since he was located, inside Villa Linda mall he'd treat us so terribly. I was under treatment for macular degeneration by another office and had what ultimately was diagnosed as a hemorrhage significantly distorting my vision. While the original, macular degernation, office was unwilling to schedule me for an appointment right away, Botwin stepped to the forefront. The front desk got the facts over the phone and at first worked in an appointment in three days. After some minutes they called back and set me up the same day. The service was professional, pleasant and thorough. The tests were made on site and a diagnosis was rendered. They called the other office for an appointment with a specialist for follow-up treatment but ran into a roadblock because it was late Friday and their key doctors at the other office had already left. My Monday appointment for treatment was confirmed. Botwin is by far a superior service and I highly recommend using them. read more

Very thorough eye exam and refraction with Dr Jeremy Botwin. By the way, Dr Jeremy did the refraction, unlike many shops where a tech does it. Last time I had a change in my distance vision, but not enough to change the contact lens prescription. I asked if there another way to accomplish it, and Dr Jeremy pondered for a minute. He suggested we could change the astigmatism strength and get the distance vision where I wanted it. Worked perfectly. read more

I would like to go out of my way to heap praise on the "optical" manager, Ray Ortiz. First, I had been having trouble with my lens prescription and he figured out the problem. Then, as someone else was replacing lenses in a 5-year old frame, she broke the glasses in two. Quite remarkably, Ray insisted I only deal with him directly in the future, went out of his way to replace them from the store in New York where they had been purchased, and charged me zero. This review is long overdue, I had an eye emergency and also I have medicaid which means adults on medicaid are only covered for eye exams every 3 years!!! I was in a jam with no more disposable contacts, I called up the office and they practically moved mountains to get me in and helped to get my insurance to cover it! I couldn't believe it I was so shocked that they helped me as much as they did while other eye doctors office will just tell you "Sorry your insurance wont cover you for another 2 years!" Good exam by the doctor, but after that everything falls apart. As you can see in other reviews, service after the exam is terrible. They didn't notify me when my glasses came in, I had to keep calling. And try getting through on a system that never answers your call! Then you have to make an appointment. I went for my appointment and stood out in the hot sun waiting for them and then they told me I did not have an appointment. I angrily asked for my glasses. They left me standing outside there even longer while waiting on someone else before they finally dumped the glasses in my hands. No fitting, nothing. I will not be going back. read more

I ordered glasses and was told they would be ready in 2 weeks. Called several times to check on the status of them and only got rude staff answering the phone with excuses as to why they are not ready, one woman even hung up on me while I was still talking. A little over a month and half later glasses were In, but when we received them they were bent and when we tried to get them to adjust them upon pickup they said we had to make an appointment to come back, wow are you kidding me . What good are these glasses to wear if they are bent and have to wait weeks to go back to adjust them . No thank you. Place is nice but staff and customer service really needs attention to. The assessment was spectacular. The Dr. was thorough and professional. The customer service from eye ware-was atrocious. They broke my glasses, broke my new lenses, didnt put my progressives on correctly and took an extremely long time to fix the decripancy. They used a lesser quality product without my consent. I felt like I was not wanted in the shop; i guess I didnt look like their desired demographic. Management did not take responsibility for the poor service. read more

Unhappy with service. It appears that they are a money mill. They are friendly when you spend lots of money. When I went to another optometrist she discovered my lens was not set correctly. When I got my blended glasses with transition lenses, I walked outside and no transition. Obviously, I had to return them and wait another week. Buyers beware. read more

I do not recommend this practice. Beware of additional exams that cost extra with no prior approval. Billing manager said I should have known what they were doing cost extra....sorry when I specifically request that I just want what is covered by my insurance that is what I expect. I didn't think I had to follow the doctor around asking if it was covered. read more

After finding this place online, I dropped in on a busy Saturday morning to see if I could find some frames I liked. My prescription was from my ophthalmologist, thus I am not a patient of Dr. Botwin. Nonetheless Martha was gracious and took me in turn, apologizing to me for the wait. I would love to give The Botwin Eye Group 5 stars, heck I would give them 10, but only of the Eye Dr.'s were separate from Oculus.... I have been a patient for quite some time and the Doctors are superb!!! I have had an opportunity to see all four Doctors and have never had an issue. They are thorough with the exam from beginning to end. Their techs are great too! The issue is a man by the name of Ray, he is so rude and condescending. He acts like you are stupid and don't anything about glasses. He makes snide comments about the glasses you pick as though he is going to be the one wearing them. If you have a repair he down talks you as though you messed up your glasses on purpose. Sadly, he helps make money for them so when you complain about him they just brush it off like its no big deal. He up sells so much to people that really don't know what is best for them. Im sure he has ripped off plenty of people..... It is a shame! He needs customer service training or a new place to work. read more

Beware the Botwin Eye Group! They have what appears to be an insurance scam going. On your first visit, they tell you that they are doing a medical exam, not a refraction, and if there is "any diagnosis" (even "no problems" is a diagnosis), they won't do a refraction that day, and they will charge that appointment to your medical insurance provider. You then have to make a second appointment for your refraction, which they charge to your vision insurance. If you don't want to come back for a second appointment, you can opt to pay $75+ for the refraction out of your own pocket on the first visit (so they're either going to get it from your insurance or from you). Naturally, they neglect to tell you any of this until you're actually there for your appointment. I've been wearing glasses and going to optometrists for almost 40 years, and in all that time, nobody else has ever tried that. I walked. read more

I have usually gone to Botwin because their doctors are excellent and their prescriptions are the best I've ever had. I need progressives and they do a great job with those. The problem with Botwin are their optical groups. They are extremely expensive and, more importantly, they take forever to get glasses done. I recently ordered two sets of lenses and after waiting almost one month! I finally called and they said that the clear lenses were in but the polarized sunglass lenses were back ordered but their lab had not notified them of this. I told the lady in charge that their lab was massively incompetent and should have notified them immediately of the problem. When I pay premium prices for glasses and lenses, I expect far better customer service. This place is a business but I will look elsewhere for eye care from this point on. read more

This was the worst experience I have ever had with any kind of medical environment. Dr. Botwin is careless and unknowledgable. He must have gotten his degree out of a cracker jack box because I have never seen such incompetence. The staff is not much better. Very rude and ineffective communication. When attempting to clarify some information with a woman at the front she was rude and unwilling to explain. They have a real elitist attitude there and if you want to go to a place that makes you feel unwelcome and unappreciated as a customer then this is the place. Visiting from out of town - tore a contact lens and needed a new prescription. These folks were just awesome from the first point of contact - Holly in the Contacts department was helpful and sweet, the nicest of all the places i called. Their walk in policy is great, and it took only 20 minutes to begin the comprehensive process. Everyone was efficient, polite and friendly, and Dr Mark is warm and to the point. I loved the fact that he was generous and understanding, easy to talk with and gave me a copy of my test results. New contacts are super! There were lots of people there - they have complete optical service, and I saw young folks being outfitted with contacts, older folks getting new bifocals, hipsters getting new shades. Everyone seemed happy and the staff there kept things moving a whole lot more efficiently than any place I've ever been in California. read more

I am completely disappointed in the Botwin office. I called to schedule my year appointment just to be told that they no longer accept Medicare. I asked them why that was and they said they don't want to serve any one with Medicare insurance and because they don't want to pay the fee to accept Medicare. It would have been great for them to send out a email or letter letting the customers know they need to find a new doctor. I also called to get my records just be told that they need to get the doctors approval to release my own records because I am no longer a patient. read more

Ray Ortiz, you are the greatest. I walked in with a very difficult repair, my dog chewed the horn temples on glasses that I purchased in Venice, Italy. Other local opticians said, I would never find someone in the USA that could repair these. Ray said, I can do it. He did it perfectly with no charge. I was so unbelievably happy.
