5/27/23 Zach's parents were in town so naturally Zach wanted to take them up north to Napa for the weekend. We stopped by Bouchon for dinner before heading back to the Bay. We parked a couple blocks away and as we were walking towards the restaurant, we were amazed by the amount of people waiting in line for their baked goods at their bakery! We got a table outside on the patio since we brought Coco with us. I wish they had given us a bigger table because I felt pretty cramped especially when the dishes came, it felt like there wasn't enough space for everyone's plates. Also it didn't help that Coco kept trying to sniff the food and she's not a small dog lol. The menus are paper and recyclable which was new to me. Here's what Zach and I got: 1. Moules au safran (mine) 2. Soupe a l oignon (My appetizer) 3. Escargot (his appetizer) 4. Gigot d'Agneau (his) Service was speedy and the waitstaff were courteous. Zach was surprised by Bouchon's version of the escargot since it came inside a baked puff pastry. He said it tasted good but would have preferred it without the pastry puff. I thought the onion soup was delicious and I enjoyed the cheesy bread over the soup. The mussels were good flavor wise but they were very salty. I loved the saffron fragrance of the soup that the mussels came in. Fries were pretty seasoned, but they give you a lot and I felt bad that I couldn't finish it.... Zach said his lamb was delicious but wish they gave more than the two pieces. I don't remember what Zach's parents got but they said they enjoyed their dishes well enough. We came to celebrate our wedding anniversary and needless to say it was great in some areas and others not so much. We were told Happy Anniversary (good start) and were brought a complimentary glass of bubbly to cheers (better start!). I really enjoyed this :) For a Saturday night, the place was packed. Like others have mentioned, the bistro tables are so close to one another. The busser had to pull out our table all the way out so that I could sit on the booth side b/c there's no way I could get in from other side. He then pushed the table back in and then my husband sat down in his seat. At this point there was no way for me to get out as I was land locked in. I wanted to wash my hands but the thought of having to do this dance again and have everyone stare, I accepted that I was just gonna have to use hand sanitizer b/c I wasn't going anywhere. It was also really noisy and I could hear the couple's conversation next to us. Food: I ordered the steak & frites ($54) and upgraded to the truffle fries (+ $9). The steak was cooked to my liking, med-rare. However it tasted too much like a hamburger patty from In-n-out. Now that's not a bad thing, but it's not what I was expecting. The truffle fries were not worth the upgrade, I would just stick w/the regular fries b/c I could not tell the difference. The star I think were the steamed mussels ($19.50). The broth was so flavorful and the bread they bring was a good accompaniment. Get the mussels!! My husband ordered the Confit de Canard (duck confit) as an entree and was given the option of 1 or 2 pieces. He picked 2 ($54) but only finished 1 and we took the rest to-go. The portion was quite big so beware. He also got a side of Puree de Pommes Au Truffe ($19 truffle mashed potatoes). These were very good :) Something small but noticeable. The staff would come around to the tables with a little tool to scrape up the crumbs throughout the meal. From my booth-seat-view, I could see the dining area. But not once did anyone come clear the crumbs from our table. It's something small but it was noticed and not what I would expect from a restaurant like this. Our server was kinda MIA throughout dinner. My husband and I were stuffed. We saw him again around dessert. The dessert menu looked good but we decided to pass as we were very full. Our server was kind and said he'd bring us something anyways for our anniversary. We got a cute little 25th anniversary chocolate bar with a candle to blow out. It's something small but went a long way. He also walked us out to the front where the flowers are and took our photo with our phone. He told us too at the beginning of dinner that he would do this. I think one time at Bouchon is enough. There wasn't anything special to keep us coming back. First off, by seating my husband and I between two other couples and our tables were only several inches apart from each other. It was tight quarters that our table had to be moved out for me to sit inside and pushed up against my belly. It was weird, awkward, loud and I couldn't hear anyone except the conversations of the two couples next to me. I think everyone felt it was weird. As the host was leading us into the restaurant, I saw many empty tables but NOOOPE, she squished us with other people. Secondly, FLIES GALORE! Flies was landing on my forehead, my shirt, my eyelashes. I had to keep them away from our food. It was annoying and distracting. However, we had a good server. She was very nice, checked on us, refilled our water and even though she had many tables to manage, I thought she paid us enough attention. The menu was very thin printed on a paper bag material. We ordered the apple salad to share, butternut squash soup and the steak & frites. It was our first time eating steak & frites outside of Paris so we were excited to try it. The restaurant is pretty cramped. To the point where tables had to be moved for people to get into their seats. It's has a dark, classy ambiance. We were in Napa for the day and decided to try walking in at Bouchon. Luckily for us, there was seating at the bar and we could order food. We ended up with 2 appetizers and one entree. Escargot was only ok. The mini puff pastry on top of each escargot did not go well with the escargot and was kind of hard. I would skip that in the future. Beef tartar was good and all the ingredients went well together for a perfect bite. The star was the roasted chicken. I did not usually care for roasted chicken. This one was probably the best roasted chicken i had ever had. The skin was thin but crispy and the meat was tender and moist. Dessert was lemon tart. We enjoy Bouchon Bistro. It is casual.This Bistro was never meant to be an actual public Bistro but a cafeteria of sorts where Thomas Keller's employees would come to have their meals. It eventually evolved into a bistro the public could enjoy. It is a very authentic french bistro. Most sidewalk cafes in Paris France do not have air con. So you might be expecting a small open air cafe if you noticed the French bistro signage outside. Yup. The bakery goods come fresh from the bouchon bakery next door but they will only serve a few desserts made specially for the bistro daily. My favorite is the croque madame. Do not expect a jewish deli stacked sandwich. However the thick fresh fluffy Bouchon buttered toast with the calculated amount of each ingredient is perfection. Fries are yum too. Service at the table or at the bar are excellent. There is a bar tender who is a High School History Teacher who works the counter on weekends who is wonderful. She tells me about the actors, movie stars, tycoons, and politicia- business people she has served at the counter. Boyonce and Sting just to name a few. I suggest reservations. My wife and I decided to have our 10th anniversary dinner here. It's a bit of a nostalgia thing for us; Bouchon was one of our first fine dining experiences as a couple, even before we were married, and it was the first time my wife had tried scallops; they were so good that I dug out my Bouchon cookbook and followed the recipe to the letter, a recipe that has now become a household staple when we're feeling luxurious. Anyway, we arrived this time for our anniversary dinner a little before our reservation time and were seated promptly. Two minutes later, the adjacent 8-top filled up with a party where kids appeared to outnumber adults. (Look, I'll try not to judge too much - if you want only the finest for your rugrats, it's your money - but I'll be honest, it just wasn't the atmosphere we'd hoped for as a reward for making it to 10 years). I immediately asked the hostess, quietly but with an amount of insistence that in retrospect I regret a little bit (I'm terribly sorry!), if we could move tables. In an act of true heroism, she not only moved us, but moved us clear to the other side of the restaurant as far as we could have possibly been from the sources of concern; we likely inconvenienced the waitress a bit as well, since we were the first in that section (though other diners were seated near us not too long afterwards). The food itself was extraordinary. We had the soup of the day, a fantastic pea soup that actually tasted like peas with all of the attendant vegetal freshness and had little bits of bacon mixed in. We also had the salmon tartare, which is the product of exacting, tedious knife work; it's the kind of thing I would never want to make at home even if I had the ingredients and skill, so to have someone else make it for you, salted so perfectly, feels special. We also had deviled eggs, which at the price they are currently might be the best deal in Yountville. My wife had a nice cocktail with some St. Germain and citrus, and I had an enjoyable glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The only minor imperfection was the bread, which was not the pull-apart cloud that we remember from past visits; thankfully, it was served with plenty of high-quality softened butter. By the end of the main meal, we were feeling pretty good but had a bit of a sweet tooth, and we asked for a dessert menu. There were a lot of options we would have been happy with (a chocolate mousse caught our eye), but I hadn't had any coffee all day so I asked if they could make us an affogato. Our waitress not only assented but actually seemed genuinely excited that we would order one, and came back moments later with a beautiful DIY affogato with vanilla ice cream in a cup and the espresso in a little pitcher to the side. It was a perfect end to our celebratory meal. I am really impressed at how Bouchon can still elevate humble bistro food, often to the level of Platonic ideal. A pea soup that tastes like peas doesn't sound like a revelation, but it definitely tastes like one. read more

Let me preface this review by saying I have the utmost respect for Mr. Thomas Keller and his contributions to our culinary experiences. I flew in for this experience since I couldn't get a table at The French Laundry. Service was very good. They definitely have an effective system in place and the staff seem to know how to maintain on-stage behavior very well. Ambiance was nice overall. Great selection of music. Conversation was a bit challenging because of the noise level. I think the music was a tad too loud which forced everyone to speak louder. Very good vibe and feel overall. Food: Nice bread service. After about 10-15 min, I did have to ask for bread plates. I highly recommend the cold lobster starter (Demi-Homard). The gazpacho was incredibly fresh, well balanced and full of flavor. The steak au poivre was very delicious, however, the cut of American wagyu I received unfortunately had inedible gristle. It just wasn't a fine cut of steak. This was disappointing. The sauce was richly layered with flavor and beautifully silky. My friend had the sole with brown butter. This was fantastic. And the table side deboning was quite impressive. The crème brûlée was great as well. Overall decent experience. A special thank you to our waiter, BSapp! He had an incredible personality and good conversation. We celebrated our anniversary at Bouchon on a Saturday. Our reservation was for 6 but we arrived 30 minutes early. We checked in and they seated us right away. The interior not surprisingly felt like a French bistro. Tables were a little cramped but felt cozy. We were seated and immediately served water, pistachios and bread and butter. And of course the bread was warm and fresh. The food was impeccable. We had the beef tartare, lamb, and mussels. The tartare is something I'll be dreaming of. The lamb was tender and the mussels bathed in a delicious garlic sauce. For dessert we had the profiteroles and crème brûlée. The chocolate sauce was definitely the highlight. Service is was what really set the experience apart. Our waiter was attentive but not overbearing. Our waters were always filed and the silverware changed with each course. The efficiency of the restaurant was just impressive to watch. I highly recommend getting a reservation. Yes it's true that you do sit fairly close to those next to you. However, the service is excellent and the food is delicious. We enjoyed the Laitue salad which was light and flavorful, as well as the Croque Madame with truffle fries. The croque Madame was warm and gooey. The fried egg on top was cooked perfectly and the truffle fries were some of the best we have ever had. This was a perfect lunch spot on this sunny California day. read more

I started with the gazpacho which is a special, and it was absolutely wonderful. The sweetness of the tomato perfectly balanced with herbs and black pepper, and which the crunch of the cucumber. 10/10 The French onion soup was hot and featured a perfect cheese crust encapsulating a scrumptious bowl of caramelized onion and broth. My mother got the salad pictured, and said it well balanced but was light on the cheese. The steak frites is absolutely stunning. The steak is a flat iron, which the chef recommends medium. Bouchon has a long standing reputation as a mainstay in the Thomas Keller portfolio of restaurants. Living in the North Bay for the last decade or so, I've enjoyed dining here a few times -- most recently probably 10 years ago. So for me, it has a heritage to it but still felt "new" to assess. And things change over time, of course. Evolution is an evitable, and necessary. I think it's fair to say that when you go to an establishment with such name recognition and prestige associated with it, there might be a higher expectation felt. A brief summary would be: I find Bouchon to be a somewhat well executed and attended premium restaurant with premium service, with an associated prestigious cost factor located in a premier area in Napa County. The good: kind, courteous service, ambiance for days, abundant wine and cocktail options, outstanding (still complimentary!) bread service (infamous epi baguette), desserts worth saving room for. The opportunities: menu options could be better (and if I recall properly in the past they were). Food prep slightly off the mark. Salt factor a little more than I'd desire. Wait staff often distracted in lovely conversations at nearby tables -- which is engaging to them -- but might be comprising service elsewhere. We were a walk in party of two on a Friday night during prime time. Can you imagine? This is definitely the state of the restaurant industry, so at the end of the day -- if we love our establishments, we need to get out there! Seated immediately on the outdoor sidewalk patio, we received our epi baguette with a plate of soft whipped butter and pistachios while we ordered drinks. Kudos for maintaining a by the glass wine list that has both approachable and more eclectic and premium options. The Bouchon Bakery, right next door, provides the outstanding bread and other menu items for dessert. We ordered a flat iron steak frites dish and Mussels - substituting a corn / sweet pepper dish for the fries... as the waiter insisted that if we had to dishes with fries, we would have way too many fries. Note to the waiter: I wanted more fries. Not the best suggestion. The corn fish was lovely but a little too sweet honestly overall and the fries were consumed rapidly off of one plate. The flat iron steak ordered medium was nearly rare. There was a ton of warm red -- little pink at all. If it were a Filet Mignon, even then it would have been borderline reasonable in my opinion. And I try to go with cut appropriate preparation as per what the chef would suggest typically. The mussels were well prepared and delicious. Some epi baguette was provided to dip -- a nice add. Dessert was a raspberry macaroon. Definitely something Bouchon Bakery does well. In summary: a very nice evening and experience - but did leave me wanting and expecting more. I feel like I would have been seriously upset if I would've purchased a more costly main course (the flat iron steak was a "less expensive" $48... for perspective... and the mussels less than $40). What would have made me upset is: I did not sense a direct correlation between the quality of the food, it's preparation, and the price you pay. If I am Thomas Keller and the leadership of Bouchon, I would be carefully reviewing this nuance. I'm all for supporting ambiance and service and mystique and allure of reputation, but when the menu selection options and ultimately preparation falls short, it's just not making me want to come back or recommend wholeheartedly. read more

What a treat to revisit Bouchon. If you've watched "Emily in Paris" and seen the numerous bistros portrayed the Bouchon Is for you. Noisy, lively, attractive-- you could be in Paris. The food is very consistent and the usual French favorites grace the menu. Steak frites , lamb specials, leg of lamb, chicken of course, sea food. Salad, Lyonnaise ( wonderful) fresh oysters, caviar. You get the picture. One note, Bistro Jeanty is similar and has a lovely menu- feels maybe a tad more authentic and just another choice--you won't go wrong with Bouchon. Service very good. read more

I've been wanting to try Thomas Keller's Bouchon for a few years now. I had a friend visiting from out of town a couple of months ago and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to go. Shortly after dining at Bouchon, I dined at Thomas Keller's famous French Laundry and the two restaurants really can't compare. Bouchon was a bit tight inside, they even had to pull out the table just for my friend to squeeze into the bench seating. We were seated near the door, and it was heavy traffic behind my chair that one of their staff members even accidentally bumped my head. I know he didn't do it on purpose, but that just shows how cramped it is in there. Upon seating they served bread and butter, but what was awkward was that it wasn't even served on a plate. They just placed the bread on a table. You would think for the price you pay, it would at least come with plates to use. We ordered the Escargots de Bourgogne $19, this was actually great and I loved the pastry baked on top. For my entree I ordered the Steak Frites $54, this was alright, made pretty standard, but it didn't stick out in my mind. For dessert we got the Cherry Pistachio Ice Cream Sundae, we both didn't really like this and regretted ordering it. Overall, our experience was just alright. I think I had higher expectations for Bouchon since it's affiliated with Thomas Keller. My suggestion is to go to French Laundry instead for a better dining experience. read more
