I think my expectations were too high. I went with another adult and kid. Our orders were a fried chicken sandwich combo, Nashville hot chicken sandwich combo and kid's chicken nugget meal. Everyone got sweet tea which was not overly sweetened. The kid's meal comes with a juice box and fruit cup, but you can get fries and a regular drink for an upcharge of $1 for each item. The chicken overall was juicy, but lacked flavor. The Nashville hot sandwich just added sauce to the sandwich rather than the chicken being dipped in sauce. The buns were basic and I think a custom one would elevate the sandwiches. They give you soooooo much fries. Two or three people could share an order. Inside is a pretty good size. I've read the other reviews. From the highest to the lowest. And I still went in with an open mind to make my own decision. Their chicken sandwich is good. Is it worth the price? Depends on who you ask. But for over $18 for a Not So Waffle chicken sandwich, fries, and a drink that is pretty steep. You can go somewhere like Chili's and get food that not only is just as good with bigger portions but at a fraction of the price. I get it you're running a business but if y'all are strapped for cash then so are we. I'm not asking you to make your prices "dirt cheap" by no means but maybe slightly more affordable? Yes I will be back the food is good however with their prices it's more of a treat and a luxury to eat here so maybe every other month. read more

The chicken was so delicious and juicy, the bun was toasted and warm. I'm not sure about pimento cheese, but that's on me. I did try it and I can see anyone loving the combo. The spicy mayo was perfectly spicy. The fries were cooked the way I like my fries, wilty and a perfect amount of salt. A few of my other friends went to another location and said the fries had too much salt. Employees were friendly, helpful, and quick. While this particular location is small and the parking could be a nightmare, on this Saturday at noon, neither was an issue. The appearance of the restaurant was clean and tidy. We were excited to try out this location of boxcar. Years ago there was one in Summerville and that was our favorite location. When we came back to visit this was the main location and it was a little different. Still very good, but it's crazy how times have changed. Everything is way more expensive, and even the breading seemed like it couldn't stick on the chicken very well like how it used too. Another wonderful experience today! We stumbled across this location a year or so ago, as we were enjoying some time away from home. We have since been back two other times, and each time it has been delicious! The Boxcar Combo is a favorite of ours with a steaming hot fried chicken breast topped with pimento cheese, peach slaw (don't worry...no strong peach flavor) and the best homemade pickles we've ever enjoyed. While a bit messy, it's definitely worth the effort. We've also thoroughly enjoyed the smash burgers and build-your-own chicken sandwich...make it what you want. The fried pickles were also a huge hit amongst our crew. And everything was piping hot!!! The only inconvenience you may experience is getting in and out of the parking lot, depending on the time of day and direction you are coming/going...but be patient, a nice southern friend will eventually let you cross over. My turn to pick lunch for myself and co-workers again this week, I always want to introduce them to amazing local options. With a vegetarian in the group I was able to get him the pimento cheese stuffed portobello sandwich and he was thrilled! Everyone else who had never had the Boxcar chicken sandwich before was just as excited. The bun is always so fresh and soft with the delicious fried chicken, peach slaw, pimento cheese, pickles and spicy Mayo. I never taste the peach in the slaw, but everything together in one bite makes it a perfect bite. Their fried pickles and French fries are great. Was having a hard time picking somewhere to eat lunch yesterday but as soon as someone mentioned BBC the answer was yes! Since I've been there are now a selection of burgers and I was not disappointed. They also have Nashville Hot Chicken. I took a bite. The chicken was juicy but I'd remove the pickles. I've been here before, to this location even and the food is always been good. But today I don't know why but the boxcar chicken sandwich was extremely bland. The chicken was juicy but not very flavorful and pimento cheese and slide just really didn't have any flavor to it at all. The chicken was really fresh and high-quality. The fries were fresh, seasoned well and crispy. The buffalo sauce was delicious and the ranch was amazing- obviously made in-house and I could taste the herbs in it. The only drawback for me was that the breading on the chicken had SO MUCH black pepper in it. Even being dipped in buffalo and ranch, almost all I could taste was black pepper. It was just too heavy in the breading flavor. I'm a midwesterner here visiting, so maybe the problem is me, not them. That might be the flavor people prefer in Charleston!
