I have very thick, wavy Asian hair that I find difficulty in managing, and Lori was great in following everything that I asked for in a cut! I love the layers and blowout she did for my hair. She's also great in making sure I'm comfortable and asking ahead of time if it would be okay for her to proceed with doing something to my head. The haircut was fine but she shaved the right side of my beard bald and left the left side almost bald. I asked her not to touch the beard but to blend it in. She was rough with the clippers which is a bad sign. When I asked her why she cut my beard she stated that the left side was shorter than the right. She didn't make sense but I didn't make a big deal out of it. It's kind of funny because I knew I was risking it when I came here. I'll just have to fix it when I get home. I definitely won't return here. Looks like they have a lot of satisfied customers I just picked the wrong barber today.

Nobody rushed me with "hello what do you want" or shoved a color wall in my face before I even sat down. I actually felt like a person, not just another number to get in and out. It wasn't until I was sitting there that I realized how used to bad treatment I'd gotten. Other salons trained me without me even noticing, packed into a tiny space, treated like I'm on a conveyor belt, rushed out before my nails even had time to properly dry. No games with the price going up if you don't tip in cash, which is honestly tacky and rude and tells you exactly how little they think of their customers. Nobody crowding me in next to three other people either. It was calm, it was peaceful, it actually felt relaxing instead of stressful. And the cleanliness. Towels were fresh, equipment looked properly cleaned, none of that murky blue water sitting in a dirty container that's clearly been there for who knows how long. Even the bathroom was clean, and that alone tells you a lot about how a place is really run. Braids by Darlene in Union City!! One of the most pleasant and peaceful Salon experiences of my life ever!! Serenity, soothing calmness, safe, secure, trust, welcomed & relieved! This is everything and more of what I experienced during my appointment with Miss Darlene! My Angel, my hero!! I feel so compelled to tell the World of my personal healing experience during my appointment with Darlene. I was referred by a family friend to schedule an appointment with Darlene, to remove the horrific extensions that were roughly crucified on my head by another Salon in San Francisco on Market Street. Mind you, this is my first time to get extensions. The same day I got the extensions, I wanted them removed or shaved off immediately because of the excruciating pain I felt from the top of my head to my lower back and into my soul! ... There are no words to describe the nightmare that cost me almost $400.00, in such a plushy, blinged out Salon on Market Street in San Francisco! Ladies and Gentleman, this is why we "Never, ever, should judge a book by its cover"!! The most unprofessional, rudest, foul language, so called hair stylist/owner, lurked amongst his frightened & vulnerable employees! At Darlene's Salon, the relief came at such a low price! I wanted to give her triple the amount of the minimal fee she charged me to remove the arbitross & hammered nails that were crucified on my head by that Salon on Market Street in San Francisco!! I felt so helpless, I could not sleep! The first and only night I had to sleep with those awful extensions! It was TORTURE!!! It felt like cancer had taken over my body and my soul was too exhausted to fight the excruciating pain!! The only positive circumstance that came out of all of this was "Darlene", and scheduling my appointment at her Salon in Union City!!!! Darlene's gentle hands and kind soul removed the most painful of stones that felt like they were thrown on my head and attached with a hammer & nails, at that awful Salon on Market Street in San Francisco! What a nightmare! I have to say; because of the positive, respectful, comforting experience at Darlene's Salon. I am ready, willing, & excited to come back to Darlene's Salon and make an appointment for all of my future Hair needs, as well as try the hair extensions the proper and professional way I now know, could only be achieved at Darlene's Salon in Union City! I am forever grateful & honored to meet such a pleasant, passionate, brilliant individual that strives and cares so much about the exceptional service she delivers to all of her customer's! I first went to Darlene with very very short hair, and I did not expect her to be able to do anything with it. I told her I struggled with thinner spots around my head did not know what to do about it. She was very patient with me and suggested doing twisties. They were so cute, and I received so many complements about the hairstyle. So, I started going back more and more. I then noticed that my hair was starting to get a bit thicker, and since the length changed, I asked her for suggestions again. This time, she gave me cornrows with extensions. It gave me completely different look, and i loved it. Now my hair is much thicker and longer than when I first started, and I have continually loved every hairstyle she has chosen for me. Darlene has been very patient with me and my indecisiveness about my own hair. She is very nice and personable which, ( when it comes to getting your hair styled), can make a world of difference. Its always a pleasure chatting with her. I am impressed by her wide range of clients and her versatility. She takes pride in what she does, and takes extra care to make sure the style is done right. Her prices are reasonable and visiting her shop is always a pleasant experience. My latest style suggestion from Darlene was to do Nubian Knots... and let me tell you... I LOVE THE WAY THEY LOOK! I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate Ms. Darlene and my experience at her shop. Let me start from the beginning, it was the day before New years eve and I desperately needed loc maintenance. I didn't want to bring the new year in raggedy and my original loctician had cancelled. I called around and nobody was willing to work on New Year's Eve (understandably). Finally, I called Ms. Darlene and she was willing to schedule me, despite the shop being closed that day. I went early that morning, and to my surprise it was around the corner from my childhood church, and was super easy to get too. When I walked in, she was very friendly and the place was decorated nicely, looked clean, and felt welcoming. Before we even started, she asked what product I was okay with using and if she should know anything that was important for me to share. Now, I can't tell you how important that was to me because of my skin sensitivity and particular nature. She also asked me about my experience with my locs that I didn't enjoy, so that she was mindful about anything that would potentially bother me. We had great conversation while I drank tea and I felt comfortable to be honest about all I wanted and how I wanted it done. It was quick and honestly, a therapeutic process. My experience with Miss Darlene was one of the best. I was nine and a half months pregnant when I called to set up a consultation and understanding the urgency to get my hair styled, she was able to start my braids the next day. She was very accommodating, kind and extremely professional. Miss Darlene takes great pride in her work and provides exceptional service. My natural hair is very thick and course and although I tryed to prep it at home, it still needed more work. As she detangled my hair and prepped it for braids she never made me feel uncomfortable or embarrassed, instead she just worked her magic and gave me a scalp treatment to help with the dryness and also shared some useful hair maintenance tips. I have not always had the most positive experiences with hair stylists, but I left feeling encouraged, refreshed, beautiful and excited that I would be able to focus on my new baby without fussing with my hair too much. (P.S. my baby girl came three days after this hair appt!). I wore my Marley braids for over two months and could have stretched that time out further because my braids were still in tact. I've been going to Darlene's for about 10 years. It was the best thing I done concerning my hair. I remember looking for someone who can do dreds and not very pricey. For about a week as I drove to work. I would always pass by this shop that specialize in braids and dreds. So one day I just drove by park my car and walked in. I already felt comfortable and relax as soon as I walked in the door. I told her my problem and she walk over to me felt the texture of my hair and she looked at what need to be done. Then she said, "when you want to come in, we got some work to do." I came back a few days later and have been going to her ever since. I have since moved out of Union City, and I live in Oakland, and I no longer have dreds, I now do press and curl. She recommended Domique who reminds me of Darlene when we first met. When I don't go to Domique, Darlene braids me up without a fuss. She is about the only person I trust in my hair, cause I'm very picky and will go without even going to the shop. I found Ms. Darlene on Yelp! I have recently relocated to Houston and wanted to get braids so that I could grow my hair out and refrain from putting chemicals. I called Ms.Darlene and she invited me in for a consultation and then we made an appt for a few days later. When I arrived she was very professional and ready to wk. We knew we had a long day ahead of us she advised about 6-8 hours. I brought my iPad, headphones snacks etc bc I couldn't imagine sitting with someone I've never met for 8 hours and not having my own entertainment! After talking with Ms.Darlene for ten minutes I felt like I had known her for years! I didn't break out any of my entertainment, the day went by fast as Ms. Darlene worked diligently on my hair as we talked and talked and talked so more!! Ms. Darlene did it great job on my braids! I love them! I expected to leave with a headache...didn't happen! She has them tight enough to where they won't come out that's for sure, no headache was definitely a plus!! Ms. Darlene was a HUGE lifesaver. I have a 2yr old son who has a lot of hair. He hated getting his hair brushed, combed, or anything. Basically he didn't like no one touching his hair. His father and I agreed that we should start locs in his hair. I found Darlene here on yelp and I called her. She was very friendly and professional. I took my son to see her a few days later and within a few hours he was done. He sat really good with her and did not cry at all. She made him feel comfortable and assured him everything would be alright. Once he was done he was all smiles. The parts and sections that she did were perfect for us and was exactly what we wanted for his hair. He loves playing with his twists (soon to be locs) and looking in the mirror. Especially after wrapping his hair up at night he thinks he's a pirate....lol. I took him in for a touch up/re tightening a few days ago and he walked in with all smiles saying Hi Ms. Darlene. Miss Darlene, Miss Darlene!! lolz. I have been using her services for years now. In fact, it started when me and my best friend used to go to her house for hair services. She moved her salon to a very nice area in Old Union City-right by Century 25 Theater just off the freeway! She has a very diverse selection of hairstyles and braids! I personally used to only use her for fishtails while I was in school because the style was so neat and clean looking. I am Filipino & Latin and wanted something quick and pretty and nothing too shocking for my family. Lol. I must say that my parents really liked it and my dad wanted me to keep it that way. haha. However, I have since let her do much more than that and she is the bomb! Me and my bff still go there every chance we get and neither one of us has ever left unhappy. Hey everybody... I have to admit, I was a little skeptical at first BUT Braids by Darlene is LEGIT! I was their a few weeks back and her braid-work is uncanny. She had my lines looking clean and fresh for weeks. The locale is right on the corner, easy to find. She had a great attitude and was quick to get my hair braided, and to note, my hair's over 16 inches now.(and it's extra "curly", Juss sayin.Cant lie). It was a great to finally find a GOOD SHOP after so many bad experiences. I've had plenty of nightmares folks, including sum braider tryna play me and double charged for giving me the wrong braids. IT WAS A RELIEF TO FIND DARLENE'S BRAIDS. SHE EVEN HAD AN EXACT BOOK OF HER PAST WORK NEATLY CATALOGED AND VERIFIED MY DESIRED STYLE BEFORE SHE GOT TO FAR INTO THE PROCESS. I have nothing bad to say. Darlene is AMAZING! I'm of Middle Eastern dissent with short hair and have never had extensions weaved in before so I was kind of scared at first. I spoke to Darlene on the phone and she very sweetly advised me on the type of hair I needed to buy and kindly answered my dozens of questions and offered me a complimentary consultation just to make sure the weave I bought matched my own hair. Darlene worked her magic and I instantly went from short hair to long beautiful natural looking long hair!!! I was scared it might look fake and unnatural since I had short hair with an ombre color but everything was well blended and looked AMAZING! She also let gave me a few tips on how to take care of the weave and keep it looking it so great! She's very on point and a super sweetheart! I recommend her to anyone! Was in desperate need to find someone to weave up this head...so I could go back to my usually Bombshell standards. On a whim I gave Darlene a call and she was able to fit me in at a reasonable price for a full sew in. She gave me a hair consultation, which I needed since I am in the process of going natural from years on years of chemicals, she trimmed my ends and greased up my scalp before braiding me and weaving me up. My particular style didn't need to be cut, so she had my 14" deep wave remi self strutting out of her shop feeling all types of fabulous in no time. She also let me know that I would need to come back for tightens, I had never done so or bee advised to do so before, which tells me she is about making sure her client looks good. Following up on my previous review posted about how pleased I was with my first visit to Darlene, I've now gone back a second time to get my singles re-done for winter in a darker color and different style. Darlene is an ANGEL! She never ceases to amaze me with the fresh touch she puts on my braids, and how pleasant the atmosphere is as I get it done. I knew that once I was more than willing to make the trek from my residence in Los Altos to Union City, that Darlene's shop was definitely the place for me to continue going to. It's been a bit over 2 weeks since I got my braids re-done and they still look amazing and aren't falling out, which is rare considering I have thin and sleek caucasian hair and pull it up a lot to exercise, putting strain on it. Miss Darlene is the best! After months of headaches trying to get my dreads right, I finally tried someone new. I don't like having lots of people doing my hair so I was reluctant to make a change. I am so glad I did. Miss Darlene gave me a phone consultation in which she asked me about my hair, the method used and how much her services would cost. She was very professional setting a time for me as well as a confirmation. I received a long overdue wash, residue (gel, wax, etc.) removal, individual parts and crochet needle. Her shop is clean and quiet minus the extras (gossip, traffic, overlapping clients) and she lets you know what she is doing in the process. The service was well worth it. Had my hair done here yesterday by Angela and she did my box braids perfectly! I tried out box braids for the first time and went for A$AP Rocky's style and she got it accurately. This has been a local stylist I have been coming to over the years, and both Darlene and Angela continue to deliver excellent service overall. There was not a single appointment I had where I was dissatisfied. And I receive many compliments for my braids all thanks to Darlene and Angela (sometimes even 3+ weeks in - considering that my hair is hard to braid). 10/10 will come again. Tips to new patrons: Darlene typically prefers text when scheduling appointments. I called this shop for the 1st time today, hoping my 10yr old daughter could get her hair braided by this weekend. Darlene the owner, asked if I could bring her in now as she had a cancellation. Thank Goodness I did! I just love the young lady Shanika(sorry if misspelled) who attended us. She is nice & was very familiar w/my daughter's hair texture.. and based on our convo, she is knowledgeable of various hair types. Shanika untangled & style braided her hair. My daughter said she was gentle. Anyway we are very happy w/the hair do & feel the price was fair. Both ladies were easy going with a professional manner. Very worth the overall service. Miss Darlene at Braids by Darlene is a gifted stylist and she runs a fantastic salon. I brought my adult disabled son to have her clean and tighten his dred locks. We first had a consultation during which she was very friendly, showed him various styles, thoroughly explained the options and what she had to do with his hair, and was always attentive to his comments and concerns. The day arrived! Miss Darlene was tender with him (he had not had his hair professionally done in awhile), very attentive to his comfort and wishes, always very professional and amazingly efficient! I recently decided to finally get locks, so for sometime i tried to do it on my own with rubber bands and wax, didn't quite work as well. So instead of waiting for my hair to natty it self up, I sought help and Braids by Darlene was the first name in my search engine, and boy am I glad it was, what a pleasure it was meeting her and hiving her inform me on what needed to be done to lock my hair. I started my natural hair journey in 2012. I've been looking to have my hair braided in box braids for some time and came across Darlene through a friend of mine and Yelp. I have a very busy schedule but Darlene was very flexible with timing. She was able to fit me in on President's Day. She is very patient and accommodating. The appointment was supposed to take all day, but Darlene was very quick and finished my style in five hours - faster than expected! It's a total experience that you cherish. It wasn't by chance that I walked into her salon, but I truly believe the almighty led down her path and she did exactly what was suppose to be done to my hair. I got back from 5 day trip and luckily I found a stylist who could fit me in for a complete take down and redo. I thought I was clear as to what I needed. My braids were loose and falling apart. Hair was added to loose braids and some sort of tightening was done which wasn't tight at all. 3 tracks came out the next day. It was frustrating. I think Dee Dee is great for certain textures of hair and types of styles but the type of hair I'm using right now, she didn't seem to be able to install it properly. I wish her the best!

All things I've let go because life happens and she does quick work. My last visit was the final straw when I pointed out 3 braids at the top of my hair I wanted to have redone with a different color so it would look perfect for my honeymoon, and she responded so unprofessionally I was in complete shock. She started ranting she didn't have time for this and I should have pointed it out earlier (with no mirror available) and she wanted to go home to her child. This is all while she's pulling hair out and slamming on her table clearly upset and raising her voice. I paid her and said it's unfortunate this is how you treat your longstanding clients (I'm on her website). She will NEVER get my money again. My hair is long, but it isn't completely straight like most common Asian hair. My hair had gotten to the point where I really needed a trim to get rid of a lot of the split-ends, but I didn't have time to drive all the way into SF (where I use to live before moving to Hayward) just to visit my usual hairdresser/stylist. I contacted Lien via text and she was super responsive. I was also able to schedule an appointment with her the next day during the afternoon. Not only that, Lien is super nice and friendly! She listened to my concerns about my hair and made sure everything was to my liking before I left. Great person and great service. I will definitely be contacting Lien as my go-to from now on!
