These guys seem to be among the rare mechanics who don't lie to you and try to sell you things you don't need. They changed my brakes for a very reasonable price, and even let me bring my own parts. I know they used quality parts since I bought them myself, and I saw them do an excellent job. This was a big relief because the last place that changed my brakes used some cut rate pads that only lasted for a few thousand miles; what a ripoff! I've changed brakes before myself, and would've done it myself, but living in the city means I don't have a garage to change them in. Years ago Brakes for Less was recommended to me by a Grandfather from my daughter's school. Two years in a row I had to have all four of my brakes replaced and the work was done by Valezquez Brothers. My brakes were so worn down and it makes me wonder if Valezquez ever replaced them in the past or just screwed me out of thousand of dollars. Brakes for less did all four of my brakes for a fraction of the cost and were fast and efficient. Recently (2.5 years later) I had to get a new timing belt for my car and got numerous quotes both inside and out of the city that were double from what Alvaro Macias quoted me. Within a day's time I had a new timing belt, water pump and serpentine belt plus front brakes put on. Alvaro checked in with me and I asked him to tell me if there was anything else that needed to be fixed and he said my front brakes needed to be done but my back brakes were fine for a few more months. I thanked him for not trying to get more money out of me and for being honest as most places would say that they would need to be done now. I totally trust him and plan to come back to the city just to have repairs done on my car. Finally there is a place out there that is not going to rip of a patron, a woman one. New Resonator. New catalytic converter. New Oxygen sensor. Oil change. New battery. New spark plugs. Two new belts and a flange gasket. All installed in under a couple hours, for under 1k at breaks for less. Reliable auto quoted me at around close to 3000 for just The catalytic converter, the oxygen sensor, the battery and a belt. If you can't do the math, breaks for less saved me about $1800, I wasn't forced to leave my car overnight AND I had more work done. Not to mention, Alvaro showed me some other things that were legitimately wrong with my car. The level of his integrity is just staggering. I have a 06 scion xa that sounded and ran TERRIBLY before I brought it into brakes for less. I hardly recognize my car now. It runs so smoothly and quietly. Just like a new car. Very honest, reliable and quick auto repair men. I went in for a tune up and oil change and my maintenance light was on. Alvaro told me that the catalytic converter needed to replaced but didn't push me to repair it as most other mechanics would have. He explained that the catalytic converter wouldn't affect the run or safety of my car but it would affect my cars ability to pass an emissions test. He made sure to explain things so that I could understand. I really appreciate his honesty and excellent customer service. I'd honestly give this place 6 stars if I was able to. I've never met such a nice group of guys that worked at an auto shop. I'm getting ready for a road trip down to Nashville and knew my car needed new brakes and an oil change. I decided to call these guys because of they great reviews they were receiving - they gave me a rough estimate $35 for an oil change (for BMW) and $100 for brake pads - not bad! I took my car in later that afternoon and they started working on it right away. Turns out my car needed a little more work than I thought (of course). I needed new back brake rotors and needed to fix the suspension on the left side of my car. My heart dropped and suddenly I was thinking that trip to Nashville wasn't going to happen. But they were able to fix my suspension, replace the rotors, and do an oil change all for $400 flat (labor included). Did I mention that after I paid they found out the sensor on my dash was broken because the brake light wouldn't go out? Turns out the guys that replaced my front brakes in California broke the sensor and lied to me and said they couldn't turn it off and I had to take my car to a BMW dealership. Nope -- these guys fixed it for me for free. I'm just so amazed at how nice this entire staff was -- not to mention how affordable and efficient this place is. As long as I live in Chicago, this will definitely be my go-to place for all of my automotive needs. read more

My brakes were very worn down. I found this place on yelp and went to check it out. Small shop in the neighborhood. They were very friendly and fast with their services. Was given a very reasonable price and they got everything done within 50 minutes. Only thing is that the entrance is small and can be hard to back out to the main street. It gives me no pleasure to write this negative yelp review. Before today, I thought of "Brakes for Less" as my go-to auto shop, a place where mechanics are honest to a fault, competent and reliable. Even more importantly: a place that could provide my '99 Toyota P.O.S. with just the right amount of care to keep it rolling for awhile longer--at the very least, until my next paycheck floods back into my ever-arid bank account. What a poor, poor, misguided sap I turned out to be. The facts of the case: on Thursday afternoon (a couple days ago) my car began to bounce up and down alarmingly every time I drove over every bump in the road, even minor ones. When I took it in, some of the mechanics were sitting around eating pizza, and the garage was almost empty. I very clearly and unambiguously explained the problem by stating that whenever I drove over a bump, the car would bounce up and down on the driver's side. I repeated for emphasis: on the driver's side only! The mechanic elevated my car and pointed out to me that the front strut on the driver's side was shot. Of course, you can't just get one strut- you need a pair of new ones on both left and right (I understood- that's always the deal with wheel-related repairs) and also a pair of stabilizers, and a left front bearing for good measure. I asked for a precise quote, and got one: $560 for everything: parts, tax and labor included. Whoa. I told him I needed to think about it, since that's a lot to put into a 10+ year old vehicle. After some deliberation, I called the next morning and gave the green light. When I came in for my car that afternoon (yesterday) the mechanic pulled out some auto part and started jabbering on about how he had to order it to fix an unforeseen problem. Once I managed to establish that he had, in fact, put it in already and that I owed him an additional $40 over the quote, I said fine, but I'll have to bring it in tomorrow, since I barely managed to scrape together the agreed-upon $560. When I drove the car home, it seemed okay. The next day I drove back to pay the $40....and wouldn't you know: the problem I took the car in for (bouncing up and down on the driver's side) was as bad as ever. When I got there, I asked him if he had ever taken my car for a test drive, before or after the repair. His simple reply: no. (Hey, what was I expecting for $560?) I then asked him to take it for a test drive right away. He did, and when he got back he blandly conceded that the problem was not so much the front struts, but the back one. How much was it going to be to fix the back struts too? Oh, an additional 300 bucks. I balked, and pointed out that he had clearly mis-diagnosed the problem. He countered that I was the one who had said it was bouncing "in the front"--a blatant lie, as I had unequivocally said "on the driver's side." Right away, it was apparent to me that what had gone down was the result of either (a) GROSS INCOMPETENCE (the mechanic never test-drove the vehicle, and further, did not even check the rear struts to see whether they, too, needed to be replaced--the minimal diligence one might expect from a decent mechanic) or (b) DEVIOUS INTENT (Since I had made no secret of the fact that I was reluctant to put $560 into the car, and since the mechanics there clearly needed work (see: guys sitting around eating pizza above) he had purposefully misrepresented it as a two strut job, when in fact it was all along a four strut job. He knew damn well that if I had known I was looking at a $900 repair that I would have said "no way" and left. By pretending the problem was really only the front struts, they got me to part with $560. In sum: The "Less" in "Breaks for Less" stands for "Less than Competent," "Less than Honest," or both. If you value your vehicle, your bank account, or your peace of mind, stay the hell away from 6130 North Clark Street. read more

Today really showed me that there are still decent people in the world. Decided to get my rear rotors and brake pads replaced at Mufflers & Brakes 4 Less cos they quoted me $250 for both, including labor (another repair shop quoted me $390). After 30 minutes of waiting, Alvaro (the owner) walks inside the waiting room and says, "I see you hit something, huh?" And since I can get defensive about my driving, I tell him, "No, something hit me. " He then motions for me to go with him to my car and shows me MY DENT-FREE FENDER! My jaw dropped and I'm standing there all amazed and happy cos I've been wanting to get it fixed for such a long time but just didn't know of any honest auto body repair shop. And then he writes up my receipt and the total's still $250! He repaired my fender for free!!! I wanted to jump over the counter and hug him, I was tearing up so much! No more hair ties and zip ties to keep my fender together! It's like brand new again! AND IT'S FREE! My brakes were loud and grinding. I was worried that my car was unsafe to drive. I called to see if I could bring it in. I didn't get there until late afternoon, but they were able to get me in immediately, check the front brakes, tell - and show - me what was wrong, and fix it quickly. They also noticed a problem with my lower control arm and fixed that while I was there. I asked them to check the back brakes as long as the car was up. Our '98 Camry was making a few noises and brakes were feeling soft, so I took it to a few places. Now, I like competent service without having to pay for fancy facilities, but many places recommended here seemed overpriced to me (although they might have been competent and honest). I ended up at this place almost by chance: I stopped at their sister location Mufflers 4 Less to take a look at the brakes. The guy there was busy and pointed me to this place, adding "He knows more about brakes anyway!" This was a most pleasant car repair experience. The place was neither abandoned nor too busy. The owner seemed competence, friendly, inclined to factor in my interest as well, gave clear advice but let me decide. He diagnosed all the problems, helped me arrive at a repair package that made $ sense for me, and finished the job efficiently. For $650 that some were demanding just for the brakes, I got with full brakes job in front, partial in the back (just what was needed, as he showed me), new struts in front (source of some noise and wobbliness; rear ones still good for a while), and new control arms in front (they were about to fall off and were unbalancing the car while turning). The car drives like new. The place does look "basic" and will not be my favorite hangout on a 100-degree day, :) but you don't really have to sit and wait here. There is a nice diner (Alexander's) a few doors north and with minimal planning you could simply enjoy a breakfast/lunch along with some reading while your car is being worked at. read more

LOVE these guys. I've taken my car there for brakes and muffler. I also needed a belt changed, and they were able to help me out. They're fast, inexpensive, and do fantastic work. Most of all, they're honest. When fixing my muffler, they told me what I wanted was too expensive. They fixed it for less money than i could have bought the part from at the auto parts store. I send my friend there to have his shocks replaced. Something came loose after 2-3 months; he took it back and they fixed it on the spot, no questions asked.
