Didn't know what the problem was. Pancho knew right away. Fixed it quicker than any shop I've ever dealt with. These guys are professionals. They don't fool around! I had a hard time trying to find a shop willing to work on my Volvo. Pancho didn't bat an eye! I had to order another part, but he fixed the car so that I could drive it and I will take the car back to replace the part. I will always entrust my car to him from now on instead of the dealer! Good, honest people. Have been taking my car for mostly maintenance work, although I thought I needed new suspension system. The first auto shop I took it to, they quoted some hefty price. After Aurelio test-drove the car, he said that it did not need new suspension. Aurelio and Alberto are competent, hard working and honest. They will tell you if it's something that they do not work on, e.g., anything associated with hybrid battery. The only thing is the shop is family run and they are so busy, it's hard to get your car in if you need immediate work. read more

AMAZING TEAM! TRUSTWORTHY! I used to go to Cars of America and boy were they expensive. They were good, but WAY TOO EXPENSIVE! So, I then transferred over to this auto shop. I experienced a dishonest mechanic at this place. My car had a problem. I dropped it off. Got a call back. Mechanic advised replacing 4 parts ($700 minus a $100 discount = $600) Do your job, guys. Shop around! Called another mechanic. His response was: "In my experience, 99% of cases you need only one part replaced". Went to Autozone, bought the part, 1 hour of labor - boom - my car is like new. Total bill: $150 parts + $130 for labor = $280. Takeaway from the story: shop around, seek second opinion, don't believe what you are told right away. Diligence and research will save you money and protect from dishonest people. read more

Leave it to the Latin American's to get it right again, Got estimates for my brakes from two places, both with nice waiting rooms and all the corporate feel for around $400 or more. That was Midas & another I can't remember. Then I was referred to Hernandez by the guys at "Value Plus Mufflers". I also thought I needed shocks. They examined my suspension and said I didn't need anything. They could have said otherwise and I wouldn't have known.They were honest, how unusual... Then they did my brakes for $180 including grinding my rotors on a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Naturally I tipped & demonstrated my magnificent dog Coral Reef III which they loved. I'm new to auto repair -- never needed it, never paid attention to anyone who talked about their car repair horror stories in the past. In fact, I dread having to take my bike to the shop, having to call a plumber, and Comcast --UGH. But, I recently acquired an older vehicle that I needed for work which, as it turns out, needs a few things. But, what seemed to be the most urgent was an oil pan replacement. Out of a whopping 4 places I visited, Hernandez was the only place that took a look at my car right away -- on a Saturday morning. The friendly mechanic put the car on his lift minutes after we walked in and asked if I wanted to see what he suggested doing and why it needed to be done so I could get a proper oil change in the future. He told me he would call around to compare new and used prices before he could give me a quote. None of the other places offered to look for used. I didn't even know that was an option (I'm totally new to car-ownership), of course I agreed. A couple of hours later I got a call with a used price and a new price and was asked if either sounded good to me. It sounded great and he was even fine with me coming for service later in the week. He just asked for a deposit (any reasonable amount) to ensure that I'd be back since he ordered the part. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who feels like they're getting ripped off at repair shops -- I honestly didn't get that vibe from this place, but what do I know. I am hypoconhdriac when it comes to my automobile and yet I really don't know much about cars. It would be easy for a mechanic to advantage of me when I ask questions like, "Are you sure the car doesn't need new shocks? Are you sure?" First, I want to say my car is not pretty my kids have had many parking mishaps but it's a 2006 Camry brought new with only 10900 miles on it. I have always taken care of it and its kept in a garage. No problems until the battery died from leaving the lights on. All of sudden when I take it in apparently new stuff like alternator which is understandable but apparently now my engine light is on I need a new oxygen sensor? From the first place I took it too. However, after I left the engine light went on again? (Never had this light on before)..Now I am questioning what just happened? After feeling suspect I go to Auto zone for a test and was recommended to Hernandez Auto for a new perspective. They let me leave the car and they tell me that all of sudden it needs an extra $500+ in repairs which was way more than I could have thought of but the car was due for an emissions test. I pay and of course after a day the engine light came back on?...I really thought they were going to be fair people. But I wasted time and money on them. After watching you tube I took a look at my car myself and found a tubbing going to the psv valve was cracked? I but some duck tape just to check and good ever since? They did on the car work not called for if they even did that? I did ask for the parts for prof. It's hard as a woman to trust mechanics. This place got my money but never again!! As a single mom, I can hold my own with house repairs, a job, my son...a lot of things, but when it comes to my car, I feel like that goat tied to a tree waiting to be slaughtered by the T-Rex in Jurassic Park. I don't know anything about my car except remember to change the oil and when it breaks down, I used to believe that being ripped off was inevitable. NOT SO at Hernandez Auto!!! I go here because they are close to my house, but I stay with them because they are just great. When you drive up, you might miss it, except for the bright hand painted storefront of blues and yellows. Don't expect a Kuerig cup of coffee or fancy bottled water, but DO expect GREAT SERVICE from experienced and talented mechanics. DO expect to be pleasantly surprised by their honesty and integrity! DO expect to be given an explanation of what is wrong-- from priorities to important things that can be put off for a bit. I have taken 3 different cars here various times and they always do a great job! Got a tune up and brake lines fixed on my 96 corolla. Had some front end suspension done on a 04 Yukon. And some work done on an 02 Civic. These guys take the time to explain what they are doing. There are no hidden charges and you can tell they are doing honest work. Luckily, I haven't had any car issues in a while since they leave them running great ;) but when I do, I will not hesitate to take it here no matter what the make/model. read more

The guys here are always nice, do a great job and the prices are amazing! Dan has helped me on numerous occasions and I would refer anyone to him. He is honest, nice, informative and the price can not be beat! I don't know a lot about cars, but I don't like when a mechanic does all of the work while I sit in a lobby then get smacked with a giant bill. I LOVE HERNANDEZ AUTO REPAIR! I own a 1998 Rav 4. It's pushing 130,000 miles and has served me very well over the years. Needless to say it is a little rough around the edges but still runs great. Over the past month (ok , ok it's been a lot longer than that) I've noticed that the car just wasn't stopping well. I kept putting it off until I found myself trying to stop the car like Fred Flintstone with my feet through the floor. After numerous Yelp reviews of Auto Shops in my neighborhood I came across Hernandez Auto Repair. 11 Reviews and all but 1 was 5 stars, I was sold. I took my car in at 3 p.m on a Monday. By 3:30 p.m Aurelio had called me back to tell me that it looked like I needed two new front tires, a complete front end brake job and possibily a back rotor resurface. I knew all of these things to be true but was waiting for him to drop the bombshell that it would cost me 1 MILLION DOLLARS! He quoted me a price that was unbelievable. I asked him twice if he meant per side for the brakes at which he laughed and said nope complete! Aurelio called me back about an hour later to tell me that the tires needed to be ordered and would not be in until the next morning. He also stated that the tires he quoted me for were not in stock and that he had to go with the more expensive ones. I knew it, I knew it, I KNEW IT!!!! This was where he was going to tell me that what he quoted was now $300 more. To my surprise he said that the quoted price would remain the same even though I was getting better quality tires. I took my car to Robert here for brake work, and goodness did they need work. New pads, 2 new rotors and 1 new caliper later, I can brake again. The turn-around was very quick, he showed me the old rotors to show me they really were too thin, not grindable. The pricing was reasonable. read more

this one is pretty cut-and-dry... called around to see who could give me the best price on an oil change before making my four hour trek to Ohio. i was waaaaaaay overdue for one and my car was making a horrible "clanking" sound. I called several places... i didn't need anything fancy, just change it for cheap. Hernandez said the price would be $20. Sold. my boyfriend took the car to the shop. and guess what? $20 out the door. I had at least expected it to be $20 + tax... i was even happier when my boyfriend told me that they fixed the "clanking" noise too: some loose brackets under my car. no additional charge! awesome. awesomeawesomeawesome. this is not the first time i've used Hernandez. I went on Yelp to see who was located in Edgewater and had good ratings. That's how i found Hernandez auto. They completed the work I requested,saved the old parts that they had replaced,and saved me $ on work I thought I needed,but they told me I didn't need. I recently had a near accident on the expressway due to sudden brake troubles and as soon as I got back to my apt I started calling all auto repair shops in the area. Hernandez Auto was the third phone call I made and i explained my situation and the mechanic said he would get ahold of me in about an hour. When he called back he quoted a far better price than the competitors and even had a part delivered from Indiana! I limped my vehicle to the garage and was instantly greeted and and was explained what was needed to be done and how much the cost would be. I chose Hernandez auto repair based on their yelp reviews. I have an older car now and don't want to pay the high dealer repair prices, but I was not sure where else I could take my car for reliable repairs. Hernandez is blocks from my home and based on the reviews seemed perfect. I took my car in to get a power window regulator replaced. I wasn't sure I could make it home from work, get my car, and make get it to the shop by 6 when they closed. I called and they offered to wait till I could get the car there. I ended up making it on time. It took only minutes to get the car checked in. The next day i got a call letting me know that indeed the regulator needed to be replaced and the window itself was fine (it had fallen into the door). The quote was very reasonable so I had them do the repair. It took a day to acquire the correct part for my vehicle (03 Acura CL) but after that the repair went quickly and I picked up my car fully operational. The part came with a 6 month warranty. I felt I was given reliable information and I was comfortable that I wasn't being taken advantage of. I do know a lot about cars so that helps but it is still very possible for a repair shop to pad their bills with unnecessary parts etc. That didn't happen here. I will certainly take my car back to Hernandez the next time I need something repaired! read more

After living in Chicago for 7 years, I found a trustworthy mechanic! I have a 2001 Volkswagon Jetta and because its an "import" Ive had numerous auto shops tell me that I am going to always pay more. So, for this particular repair I originally received a quote that I thought seemed a bit excessive from another shop. I stopped into Hernandez, originally for a $20 oil change - which is a reason alone to go there! - and mentioned the quote. He told me 50% less! So I ended up leaving my car for the repair. When i came to pick it up the next day - they actually told me same-day service but I was too busy - the headlights had been cleaned for free. And since I was late they figured they may as well wash my car for me since it looked dirty. I am in awe of the honesty for the repair expense, but then in addition to that I was treated like one of their friends that they loved doing a couple extra favors for, on the house. Nicest, most honest, reliable and professional place I have ever taken my car. And this includes living in L.A., Portland and MI. Too bad I cant take them with me to my new home-state. read more

My check engine light came on and my motor started shaking quite a bit, so I took it to Auto Zone for the free reader check. Of course, it's not always accurate, but it showed a repair that was going to cost over $500, so I looked up reviews for car repairs near my home (luckily I'm walking distance from here!) I took it in and Aurelio seemed confused at what the Auto Zone reader showed, so he said he would plug it in to his computer and call me back in a few hours, since there were about 5 cars ahead of me. He called back in about 1.5 hours and said rodents were chewing on my wires, so the parts would be very inexpensive, just a few hours of labor and time to order new connectors. He had my car done in less than 24 hours at a VERY reasonable price, and took the time to show me what they replaced, what they had to order, and where the rats were nesting. It's no big fancy place but they do good, honest, quick work, and they update you every step of the way to make sure you know what's going on with your car. After being in the city for almost 6 years, I finally have "a guy" to take my car to from now on! read more
