This is a less pretentious place in the meatpacking. There are 3 floors, the top floor is a rooftop where you can go to smoke while freezing your ass off during the winter. You can see the rooms of the Standard Hotel next door. The bathrooms are not great, but they had toilet paper till 2am (not sure if they still did after that since I left). There are tables where you can stand or sit, both on the first and second floors. read more

I've only been here on an early Saturday evening, where the crowd was large enough to scope out eye candy but not too large that you have no room to walk over and try to pick up said eye candy. FIrst step-- try to get a seat up at the roof deck. Unlikely, but worth a try. Hover uncomfortably over people trying to enjoy their drinks and food if you have to. You get a gorgeous view of the sunset over the Hudson River. If you're so fortunate, they have lots of seats on the first floor. The prices aren't bad, especially for their happy hour menu. I recommend the tacos and the sweet potato fries. The nachos weren't that great. Best of all, the drink prices aren't too bad. Ask for a Lindsay Lohan-- it's a Red Headed Slut with a splash of Coke. I had this bookmarked for thee longest and stumbled upon here when my girlfriend and I decided to grab drinks after the Whitney - art followed by booze is always an ideal date for me. Came here when the weather was peaking - rooftop season, baby! It was fleet week as well so all them sailors were mingling - not my point. First - it gets crowded AF. After a certain hour - I would say 9 close to 10ish pm there is a slight line trying to get in and that means there will be a delay for getting your drinks as well. I left the bar around 1ish and there was a tremendous line..... I mean... a LONG LINE. Anyway, drinks are decent price. I highly recommend going anyway in New York during Happy Hours because NY is expensive as it is, right people? We ordered small bites - fries and chips - surprisingly great guac and salsa! Not many places can really capture the Mexican dips (that's just my personal opinion. Chiptole don't count, y'all). Service is a bit slow due because it's not really a dining place - more of a casual drinking spot. There are full bars on every floor and if you're at the rooftop, there is service. Brass Monkey has to be one of the more casual bars in the area. I don't think there is a strict dress code and I guess that can be refreshing at times. Front door staff is incredibly rude and sexist to women. Came here on a Saturday in the middle of the day during the post-brunch day drinking rush and watched the bouncer turn away girl after girl for being too drunk or dress inappropriately, and let every single guy in. You are a bar. With a roof. In Meatpacking. There are going to be LOTS of drunk people coming to your establishment to spend their hard earned money on your overpriced drinks. I really enjoy this place! This is a great place if you're in the area and need to chill for a little bit. They have a dimly lit inside area as well as an upstairs that is a bit more open. Our bartender was extremely rude. It was a busy Wednesday night and we were out for a special occasion, he came up to us very aggressively saying the more we cheer the less likely he is to serve us and attend to us, meanwhile what we were doing had no relevancy to him or his job. All right. Not too bad. The men were pretty cute (more Ben Affleck less Matt Damon)and their vodka tonics are good. Get there a little early in the evening to avoid long lines (10:30-11). Plus if you decide to go outside for any portion of the evening they give you a little happy face stamp and you can return without waiting. But get the happy face!! Whenever I go to a place that I absolutely cannot stand, I take heart in the fact that I can then go home and write a cathartic Yelp review. Thank you Yelp. I am not sure where to begin. The best way to describe this place is that it was packed. So packed I could barely get around. Packed with douche bags. (Yes, the people I was there with get a pass) I hate the phrase "bridge and tunnel" but it did come to mind. To be fair, it was not my scene. If your scene is packed to the gills with 20 and 30 somethings that work in finance or want to look like they work in finance, a lot of women with too much make-up, a sprinkling of tourists and at least 20 possible Patrick Batemans, you're set. Oh and the drinks were kind of pricey. High point of the night: the 2nd floor women's' bathroom: not a bad line. Nice place, the rooftop has a great vibe at sunset! However... Either very badly understaffed, or just bad staff. Apparently there are $7 drafts on the rooftop. Where is the bar? Oh, it must be the area where people are bringing drinks from. Oops no, staff only. Oh - it's table service? We've been sitting for 20 minutes nobody approached us. 10 minutes later we finally catch somebody. Another 10 minutes waiting for drinks. 10 minutes waiting to ask somebody for the bill. 10 minutes pass, still no bill. Ask somebody, waiting another 10 minutes for the bill, they forgot to bring back card. We pay cash, wait for card and change for another 10 minutes. Finally, we can't wait any longer and need to walk into the staff-only area to get attention, and demand card and change. Nice place, but customer service on the roof is a complete waste of time. As far as the Meat Packing district goes, this is one of the less pretentious, and less obnoxious bars. As far as regular bars go, this place is very mediocre...I came here on a Friday evening, around 8 before it gets too crowded. The lower levels were pretty empty, but I guess since the weather was really nice, the outdoor patio was pretty crowded. We were wandering around trying to find an empty spot and a server pretty quickly found us to take our order. She told us that she'd bring us our drinks, but we had to stay put. Ehh, we were hoping to wander a bit. It seemed like they were pretty busy, so it took some time before our drinks came out. We managed to snag a table in the corner, where it was less crowded, and ordered some fries and sliders. The sliders were pretty bare bones. Nothing really to rave about. One thing that's really odd is that while they should have a lovely view of the Hudson, they've instead blocked it off with potted plants. Additionally, it looks like they have a bouncer to keep people away from the edges. A few people asked if they could take a picture in the one spot that wasn't blocked off by the potted plants (it's a nice view when it's not obscured by the trees) and the bouncer said "one at a time". Place was decorated nice for the holidays. No wait to get in (yay) $2 coat check. Got served right away and drinks were cold and strong. Music was pretty good. Good place if your with some friends who want some dancey music and some friends who just want to stand around and socialize. I had a good time and met some new people while I was here. I can't really complain! Came here with some friends for happy hour! It was awesome! Came in, grabbed a big table in the back and ordered some beers and appetizers. The place was a little too dim. I didn't get to see the whole place, but I believe there was an upstairs. Looks good for happy hour, not sure about dinner. Our waitress was great and ended up coming over and taking some shots with us on the house. Sounds like the place gets pretty fun later on. I'd definitely go back. Overall a good bar. The place was jam-packed most of the night--if you want to be able to talk to your friends, come early or be patient and stake out one of the perimeter tables. Otherwise, brace yourself for a lot of pushing and shoving until it starts to thin out around 2am. Beer prices are okay for this area, but my friend paid 7 bucks for a rail tequila shot (who would order that anyway, right?) which seems way too high. Beer and liquor selection is great. You'll quickly cover the reasonable $20 minimum tab. It's a good spot for meeting people, too. There were many attractive, friendly and intelligent girls, and none of my female friends got harassed by lecherous creeps, which is always a plus. I happened to catch the end of the Jags/Steelers playoff game here and I wouldn't recommend it for sports. They have a couple small TVs and one huge projector, but not nearly enough considering the layout of the bar and the mass of people. I've only been to this area a couple times (Gaslight, G2) and always took a cab. I was shocked to find that, when I had no cash, it was actually faster to take the subway from and to the UES (4,5 to Union Sq. and L to 8th Ave). Brass Monkey is one of the more casual and fun bars you can find in Meatpacking. (Night time review) The bar is three floors; the bottom is a bar and an open dance floor; the middle is more of a bar area; and the top is a beautiful rooftop (if its not too crowded). I've been here a number of times and it has most of the time has been a great time. The crowd is usually a good casual crowd but to me this is a better location to go with a group of friends. You can drink and dance on one of the bottom floors or have a chat on the rooftop where it is more quiet. The wait can vary but most of the time it has been generous to me. I have no complaints of the staff And the drink prices are regular NYC bar but most definitely cheaper than the clubs around that area. I would recommend/ come back a couple times read more

Everyone's packed in there so you can barely move -- then large groups form around the stairs, these groups jut out and occupy most of the standing area while they are waiting to move upstairs. to then go upstairs and downstairs, to wait to go upstairs again. I saw one girl at least 6 times by the stairs waiting to go back up One weird thing - people why don't you dance ?! Like shimmy a little, not pretend like you can hear each other during the deep meaningful conversations you are having yelling over "Don't You Worry Child" And forget about the expensive drinks , but really? A rail vodka tonic and you charge me $9 , for real? And of course you're ripped off because you get a tonic basically And it's standard for the health and cleanliness to be low, and of course your standard bathroom with only one sink working and no toilet paper in any stalls I would give it 3 or 4 stars is the music was louder & actually good so I can dance with my friends, and people danced or attempted to (just sway side to side or something!). I've been here twice now (had to meet up with friends there)---a Thursday night and a Monday night. What can I say, it's the Meatpacking district. If you have the proper uniform (men: button-down shirt tucked into dark slacks, women: slinky dress), and if you enjoy $6 for a Coors light, then you'll love it here. The crowd is 20s/30s, and it's full of high-earning guys and the women who love them. But, there's some nice A/C going on, which is important, seeing as how there are a trillion people there. To sum up, you'll love Brass Monkey if (A) you're a guy looking to land a girl who loves money, or (B) you're a girl looking to land a guy who's looking to land a girl who loves money. read more

Brass Monkey: My cool friend who has been on hiatus in Miami for a couple years met me here and said, what the hell has happened to New York? We were surrounded by suits and ties, not to mention seething prides of cougars prowling the room. Yes, ladies, its a shame that there's some immediate attraction to a guy in a tie and slacks, but there are plenty of those here. However, my good girlfriend who shares that attraction said that there wasn't a single guy in the room who she'd want to talk to. Price? An overpriced pint of Stella for $6. Between my group of friends we had probably 8 rounds plus food and not a single buy-back. After last night my wallet is in a recession. The only thing that I actually thought was good about the place was the music. Upbeat, somewhat dancy, balanced deftly between the familiar and the obscure. It really helped the place out. In summary, the west village has fallen to the suits. Don't believe me? Cruise by the neighboring BierGarden. I'd rather have cigarettes and leather any day of the week. I did get a good laugh though when the bouncer made us wait a few minutes because it's too crowded, then let us in though nobody exited. I have only been here once but I had a great time. First of all there were quite a few of us out that night - six to be exact and we were actually able to sit together comfortably. What are the odds? My drinks were all great AND I saw a fist fight! Two knuckleheads egged on by a dumb drunk girl who didn't know when to keep her mouth shut. Then she gave the bouncer a hard time because he didn't clean up her mess and break-up the fight. The fight was outside on the sidewalk, so you know what dumb drunk girl - Good for the bouncer. I also saw some other girl harass the poor bouncer because she didn't have her ID. I know not all bouncers are cool, but this guy was really nice which I think says something about the place. One of the "better" free bars in meat packing. Its basically 3 floors of bars with the top floor being a mini rooftop with a view of the bay. The music is basic top 40 but no real dance floor. This is a more laid back and divey bar compared to the pretentious hip bars of the Meatpacking District. It is extremely spacious inside with upstairs seating too. Came here on a Saturday night when this bar was in full on club mode. Perhaps I should preface this review by saying that I'm not really a clubgoer. My friends arrived at 10:30 and got in fine. I had some transportation issues (THANKS MTA) and didn't make it until midnight. The line was ridiculously long. I would've turned and left had my friends already not been inside already and having a really good time. The line was hardly moving except when large groups of people got tired of waiting and left. I was about to do the same when the bouncers finally let me in. Took about 90 minutes. People kept cutting, and I'm pretty sure people were also pay to get in. I'm not mad that they let people willing to pay get in cut the line, amusement parks do the same thing. After finally getting close enough, though, I was able to see small groups of really pretty girls walk up front and they were let in. That was frustrating for me because, there I was, all by myself, but I still had to wait. Guess I wasn't cute enough! The people inside did seem to be enjoying themselves. It was packed, as one would expect a club to be on a Saturday night, and the music was so loud I had to wear earplugs. My friends had found a little corner table in one of the bars in the way back, same room as the DJ (aka a guy with a MacBook.) I was able to get to the bar and would've had no problem ordering, but after my experience getting in, I didn't want to give that place my money! I just wanted to dance! It wasn't super packed in that particular area, but there were people so drunk and spilling things, it made dancing difficult. We kept getting backed into the wall. Oh, and we got to watch a number getting thrown out for reasons unknown. Not so much fun. I think I spent more time waiting to get in than I did inside. At least, it certainly feels that way. Went early after work on a Friday. First two floors have full bars with friendly bartenders and wait staff. Great service. Had the Mac & cheese and app sized pizza. I LOVE Brass Monkey!!!! It's true that Brass Monkey is "just a bar" amidst all the fancy-pancy clubs in Meatpacking, but it is precisely for that reason why I love it. It's not pretentious and nor does it pretend to be. It's just a chill, relaxed atmosphere where you can have a good time with your friends, playin connect 4 or inviting others to join you in a game of Jenga. Fun place to meet exceptionally cool people -- sans pretensions. Of course every now and then you might be approached by some obnoxious prick who clearly has no interest in talking to you and only wants to get shagged, making no apologies for it. but that's just a risk you bear whenever you leave the apartment or step into any establishment where alcohol is served. and hey, if that's what you like, even better~ Brass Monkey can get a bit too crowded on the weekends but you can always find a lil corner to surround yourself with those you love. read more
