I came here on a last minute whim when a friend invited me to see a Jazz Show. I didn't know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised despite the $40 cover charge. There are live shows daily from 7 and 8:30pm with lines forming half an hour beforehand, so come early. Once inside, you're welcomed to this sexy and dark bar leading into the back room. There isn't really any bad seats in the house as it felt intimate. Before the show started, a waitress came around to take your drink orders and they were great about refilling drinks even throughout without disturbing anyone. The Jazz show was so impressive and such a vibe. It really brought you to another decade in New York. The cocktails were $20 each with mocktails being $16, which is pretty average for Manhattan. There's lots of Frank Sinatra inspiration on the menu, which fits the atmosphere here. read more

It's absolutely gorgeous inside, the velvet upholstered seats and mirrored walls along with that classic zinc bar top make you feel like you've stepped back in time to another New York. Of course the one time I went with my friend they didn't have any live jazz, but I'm wondering if that's the reason we were able to get a table as I've read other reviews saying this place often had a long line. Their cocktails are expensive, but strong and very creative. I got the Birth of the Cool, which had citrus vodka, grapefruit noice, elderflower liqueur and fresh lime juice. It was so tart and refreshing... but priced at a whopping $20 for that small glass. Whatever. We also got two Nutty Irishmen ($23), which had espresso, brandy, Bailey's, and hazelnut liqueur- super rich and very boozy indeed. Although cocktail prices are steep I would absolutely go back. Zinc Bar is one of the many bars in the general around on West 3rd Street in the Village a hop, skip and a jump from MacDougal (which is party city on Friday and Saturday nights). I have a deep affection for this area and I remember there being a different bar here in the past but in recent year(s) it has changed to Zinc Bar. Unlike many places in the area, Zinc Bar is not looking for a divey look or trying to attract a hot nightclub crowd. Instead, Zinc Bar is an Art Deco themes bar that offers live music generally skewing towards jazz music. The decor is *beautiful*. Small statues are displayed throughout. Art Deco style moldings and designs are found from front to back. The front area is where the bar is located while the back is the lounge area that feels like it could have come out of an old noir crime story from the 40's. As someone who absolutely adores Art Deco just sitting in this bar and taking in the atmosphere was really great. The staff is super friendly and welcoming, though sometimes you will have to wait at the door for a host to seat you (this appears to vary based on time of day) and how crowded they are. The bartender made me a King Cole cocktail nice and quick and the host was very kind about letting me stash a gift I had purchased for a friend in the coat area (not supervised so keep an eye on your stuff, folks). I fear I do not recall what was IN the King Cole but it was fruity, sweet and tasty. Zinc Bar is now one of my go to bars in the area if I need a place to touch down briefly. I've gone back twice since my original visit and I look forward to going again. read more

Dear General Manager or Owner, Consider this a humble suggestion: your waitstaff could seriously benefit from a class on customer service etiquette. The remarkable arrogance and negligence, particularly from the sullen short blonde with the puffy face and rat-tail hairstyle--whose name remains a mystery since she refused to introduce herself--left quite an impression last Saturday evening. As a seasoned observer in this industry, it's obvious that individuals like her--and the thick-headed old-timer at your entrance, who boasts of his 25-year tenure as some hybrid between an aging bouncer and a person with minimal managerial duties--are dragging your establishment toward failure. Last Saturday, as a brief detour before our main event, my acquaintance and I decided to drop by for cocktails at around 9 PM. We were seated near the bar and waited a good 15 minutes before our waitress sauntered over with a face seemingly etched by life's travails or perhaps difficult monthly cycles. Pressed for time, we attempted to order a second round of cocktails using what I believed was a universally understood gesture--a simple wave. After seven ignored waves, I resorted to a polite, "Excuse me, could you please come over?" She responded with such reluctance, as if she was a guest instead of being on duty. Suddenly, your waitress--who must possess some unknown royal lineage--arrived with our cocktails and began SHOUTING, flailing her arms, and spitting as she declared that we couldn't summon her like that. Perplexed, since we used a universally recognized gesture to signal a waitress, I attempted to clarify the situation. She turned away without letting me finish. I have no idea how long she has worked for you or where she was previously employed--perhaps there she was summoned with a bell and wore a ring in her nose--but that's her issue, not mine. Before long, your "manager"--who might find more success chasing butterflies than running a bar--stepped in to handle the situation. Unfortunately, his intellectual prowess rivaled that of a doorknob, which is common for those lacking in cognitive abilities. As I was delivering my highly reasonable explanation, by the third sentence he decided that our presence was no longer welcome. Apparently, in his world, asking a waitress to do her job constitutes shocking insolence. Naturally, he made no mention of a refund for the cocktails we had only just ordered, nor did he extend the courtesy of enough time to finish them. In conclusion, your establishment is quite irrelevant to me as a visitor, after all, New York is teeming with options. I do, however, extend my gratitude to your circus troupe for the unexpected entertainment. Were I the owner of this fine institution, I'd likely call a team meeting first thing Monday morning to clarify that despite their frequent presence, the venue is neither their personal lounge nor their sovereign domain. They were brought on board to ensure this establishment thrives through prompt and pleasant service. Otherwise, expect chaos to reign, customers to vanish, profits to evaporate, and your clueless waitress and the senior bouncer to find themselves seeking employment on society's fringes. read more

Stumbled upon this cute little art-deco spot on a walk in the West Village and loved it! It was mid-day, so there was no live music but the cocktails were fantastic and the interior was soooo vibey. It literally feels like you stepped into a time machine and Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday is about to come out on stage. From the wooden walls, to the powder room, to the velvet seats--everything feels so vintage. The low lighting, candles, and fresh flowers everywhere make the perfect ambiance. There are cute areas tucked away for a romantic date night and I'd love to come back and catch a live show here! The earl gray martinis were excellent. read more

The arrogance of the door staff is astounding. Still having trouble picking my jaw up off the ground after being turned away for having a Blue Note tote. This isn't my first recent terrible experience with Zinc either. Very surprised to see this low rating. My experience here was nothing but outstanding. Fantastic jazz music, amazing cocktails, timeless and very old school theme, takes you back in the time. My friend and I couldn't make it for the jazz performance on time but when we arrived initially we were seated at the bar and could hear the jazz music playing from performance section area of the place. We ordered black and gold and espresso martini at the bar. Drinks were strong and yum. We were then moved to the inside section. The vibe was still pretty cozy. Overall service was very friendly. I will def visit again for the jazz performance the next time in I'm in NYC. read more

After having dinner up the street at Spicy Moon West, a friend and I decided to look for a bar to have a couple more drinks. While walking we came across Zinc. I looked through the window and noticed that there were no seats at the bar but the gentleman in the front invited us in and asked if we would like to listen to music and have drinks in the music room. We agreed and were pleasantly surprised, a live jazz band was already in session and jamming. The lights were dim and the seating was cozy. We enjoyed the music and drinks and left after we found ourselves being the last two in the place. On another note, I have passed this place so many times and never "saw" it. Zinc Bar still has the old 1930s speakeasy vibe. Low ceilings, good acoustics and musty dark reddish velvet close booth seating. It's first-come first-served confusion upon entry. Tonight was just okay, and we frequent many jazzy spots. The staff however, clueless and not very attentive upon our astute observation. We will stick with Smoke, Blue Note, Dizzys Lincoln Center and Jazz Forum for now. Guess Zinc survives on reputation at least. Three stars. Thank you read more

My first jazz bar in New York! This was an amazing experience: I went on a Sunday around 8pm and it was empty but that meant it felt a lot more intimate. It was a beautiful performance; the musicians incorporated a lot of non-traditional jazz instruments like shakers and bells which I loved. The drinks were also very good! Upon walking by we were enticed by the music first and foremost before we were greeted by the gentleman at the door. "Welcome to NY, come on in" he said. I looked at my partner and we stepped in. Upon stepping in I felt like we were being transported back into the 1930-40's era. The entire place had a really great vibe going on even right at the moment we walked in past the bar. The gentleman at the door led us to a couple of spots as options for us visit. He showed us the bar, a small seating area across from that, and then walked us back behind a pair of dark red curtains where there stood a stage and a whole other area of seating. Of course we were WOWed by the ambiance of the back seating area. The plush and vintage looking seating that had vases with fresh flowers in them were just super inviting to come in and spend some time with your company under the dimmed lights. I absolutely loved the vibes in the back room. Although we came on an evening where there was no band or talent booked I bet this spot is a great spot to come chill out while having a classic cocktail with your loved one. Who cares if there is a minimum drink limit - come in and enjoy yourselves. You know you will meet that limit after a round and a half so relax. Take in the vibes and take as many pictures as you can (without the flash, please) so you can always remember how dreamy this spot can be. read more

Great little jazz bar. Came here with my best friend on Thursday for the Cuban jazz. I had the elderflower cocktail, which was so great I had another. The music was engaging and the performers were having so much fun with us. It seemed like a warm environment in a classic vintage setting. Very 1930s/40s. Arrived about half an hour before the show and didn't have trouble getting a table, but it was packed very quickly. Staff were friendly. Here's a story about who the people at Zinc Bar genuinely are. Last year, my girlfriend and I found the Zinc Bar on our final night in town during a weekend NY jazz club trip. We immediately fell in love with the romantic Art-Deco-era Paris jazz bar vibe and vowed to return next year. This year, we came back, and I decided to propose to my girlfriend at Zinc Bar. We came in on a Friday night to have a few after-show cocktails, and while there, I spoke to the doorman, Ansel, and told him I had a plan to come back tomorrow to propose to my girlfriend. The next night, Saturday, we returned, and Ansel said, "Hello, Chris, welcome back! Your table is waiting!". He then walked us to one of the best booths in the corner. HE SAVED US A NICE SPOT! I was shocked and touched. Our fantastic waitress from the night before, Mulan, greeted us with a huge smile, and we enjoyed a few drinks until I finally got up the nerve to pop the question. She said YES(!!), and the crowd cheered us. Later, Mulan came over with two glasses of champagne, and we enjoyed (too) many celebratory drinks. HERE'S THE KICKER: The Zinc Bar staff didn't know me, owed me nothing at all, yet they went OUT OF THEIR WAY to make the night magical for us. I came here for after-dinner drinks. Around 9, the lounge area was not very crowded but by the time we were leaving around 11, it was packed with a diverse mix of patrons. As you'd expect from a jazz club, the main lounge has a very old school New York vibe with low lighting and velvet seats. However, I was disappointed that on a Saturday night, they didn't have any live music. Drinks were a bit overpriced. I ordered a mojito and it was fine, nothing special. They don't have any signature cocktails. It's a cool venue and was a welcome relief on a hot summer day, but probably best to check their schedule for music performances because there's nothing super notable about it otherwise. read more

Zinc bar is a stellar joint! It provides a very authentic old school speakeasy vibe-- not because there is a passcode to enter, or because it looks old, because it IS an old speakeasy thats been running under one name or another since the 30s! Still family owned an operated, Zinc bar has hosted true greats like Billie Holiday, and Thelonious Monk was the house pianist. As a NYC tour guide, I fight between telling everyone and keeping this place to myself. Inside it still looks like the 30s and 40s. You can catch great live jazz and enjoy a cocktail down a few steps in a true old school bar. Highly recommend! read more

Decided to stop in on a Wednesday night after an early dinner. Yes, we fit right in with all the other tourists and yes, $35 per person seems like an unnecessary price for admission. BUT, this place has a history and a feel that if you allow it, then it will transport you back a 100 years in time. The music by Konstantin & The Konstellation was a perfect for this place. In fact, Jay's drum set was over 100 years old and fit perfectly with the set the band played. Did not try the food, but had a few drinks and they weren't amazing nor were they terrible. From the outside, Zinc Bar doesn't look like much, but trek down a few steps and you're in a bygone era. You don't need to hide your alcohol in the hollowed out heel of a shoe because the bar is fully stocked and the bartenders are pretty good at keeping up with a pre-show crowd. My friend and I came here for comedians Krystyna Hutchinson and Wendy Starling's comedy show Glamourpuss. The performance space is great and there's not a bad seat in the house. The waiter service was also pretty good and we weren't without an empty glass for more than a few minutes. I was a little surprised that they don't have a bigger wine selection, just seems like the place where wine would be a heavily featured drink. The bar area is quite cushy to hang out and there are a couple of places for group seating, but perhaps get there a bit early if you are in a group to make sure you plant yourself before the show. Looking for a wonderful and clean place that has live music? This little bar is a really nice place to try out. Walk in to a nice cozy space and then lies the bar...then onto the DJ area...then onto the sitting for the stage. When you come in especially on Tuesdays you don't know who you may see. Anyone from Anderson Paak to Casey Benjamin. The drinks were pretty good. I don't think they serve food but honestly I had already ate right before coming so I was worried and if you do happen to get hungry while there, you can always wave and there is a few food places on each block surrounding this place. They still have outdoor seating but within the last year they opened up the indoor seating.
