My husband and I were meeting up with his parents in Batesville and was in search of a place for dinner. We found Brau Haus on Yelp and saw that it had pretty good reviews so we decided to give them a try! Brau Haus was situated in the cutest town with a lot of German influences. I honestly did not know this existed in Indiana and definitely want to come back in the future to drive around & explore more. We came on a Saturday night at dinner time and we were able to be seated right away. The restaurant was full most of the time we were there with very little wait time. It also seemed to be filled with locals which I love when trying a new place! We started our meal with the Bavarian Pretzel with Beer Cheese. The pretzel was warm and soft, so yummy! My husband and I decided to split the Whole Chicken for Two. I missed the "whole chicken" part and just saw it was "for two." It was SO much food! In the town of Oldenburg, there was a small parking lot and next to that small parking lot was a place called Brau Haus. There was a bar side and a restaurant side (and apparently a back area with more tables). The decor gave it a feel that one might experience in Germany even though I've never been there. We were here to try the chicken even though there were other items on the menu that sounded good. We each ordered a Half Chicken only ($7.99) and I ordered a soda ($1.99). It took a while before our food came out, but at least as far as we knew, it was made to order which was good. All that happened while we were waiting for our food was Tony M. and Adam B. were betting to see if the Yankees or the Red Soxs would be ahead. The loser would buy only the entrees at a new restaurant in Kansas City. The food came and it looked like a lot of chicken with a dinner roll on top. There definitely was a lot of salt and pepper on the chicken. There was nothing amazing about the appearance of the chicken to me. Each piece was pretty hot temperature-wise even after minutes of eating. It was a little too salty for my taste but others would say otherwise. I thought it was just okay. My friend and I went yesterday to Oldenburg originally to eat at Wagner's (they were closed). So we decided to try out Brau Haus and were not disappointed at all! The food was really good and we would have to recommend especially the German Potato Salad which was much better than any I have had anywhere else! The fried chicken, cod filets, and cole slaw were better than we expected. I didn't get our waitresses name but she gave us very attentive and great service. My only disappointment was that they didn't have cobbler for dessert so we ordered the cheesecake instead. I also was very uncomfortable in the straight back booth and had to get a cushion from the car to keep my back from hurting. We would like to drive down again in the future to visit this restaurant but will sit in the more comfortable chairs next time. read more

My wife and I ordered the 2 person chicken dinner and it was very good. I have never had a fried chicken that had a black pepper coating and I would definitely order it again. Splitting the meal came out to about $14.50 person and we definitely did not leave hungry. It came with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and coleslaw. If we ever visit Batesville/Oldenburg area again we will definitely eat here again. Our waitress was a dark haired lady that was also excellent ! She came by the table multiple times and made sure our experience was excellent. As I was about to leave, I went and met the owner and manager to tell them what a great job she had done. Excellent food and service in a very old Oldenburg house. Most of the eating establishments in Oldenburg are in original old houses. Places aren't fancy but food is worth the trip. We had the chicken dinner for two which was very good. Sauerkraut balls for an appetizer were also very good. We will definitely be coming back to sample some of the German dishes. read more

We randomly decided to try Brau Haus on a road trip and everything was so good! The wings are breaded, crunchy and seasoned more than sauced. Pork tenderloin sandwich was a huge piece of perfectly breaded and fried pork, pickle fries were hand breaded in a cornmeal breading and also perfectly cooked. Terrible experience. Family meal for my mother was a horrible afternoon. My mom is 78 years old and said that was the worst meal she had ever had in her life. Didn't get all of our food and all we got was " sorry about that " when we had to pay. No service or server to be found. Actually had to get our own refills at the bar. Terrible management and terrible servers!! Fried Chicken way to peppery and again never got our sides. My sister NEVER got her food. But we still had to pay full price because I guess when there is no one around to ask why, it can't be addressed. Just awful. Yes the coating on the skin was good; meat was dry but flavorful. Pretzels were tasty though coated in butter and I'm not sure why since they were served with beer cheese. Pass on the beer cheese. Brau Haus is in the small village of Oldenburg, which itself deserves a review. It was founded by German immigrants who must have really wanted to recreate their home town (which I totally understand) and they did a good job on it, and the atmosphere remains in the 21st century. Soaring church spires, functioning bell towers, ornate street signs in German no less, with the English translation in smaller print underneath. Quaint little shops and storefronts, stone buildings; even the local grocery store is a tourist attraction. This restaurant & tavern fits perfectly into the scheme. You feel like you've stepped back into the "old world" when you step inside. The atmosphere is cozy and old fashioned. You walk in to a dining room with booths and tables against the walls; the salad bar is here too with plenty of floor space so the people at the tables aren't disturbed. You'll find the specials board here too, which on our visit indicated no less than four tempting varieties of homemade pie. To your left you enter the barroom, which includes tables as well, but again with comfortable walking space. The bar was also manned at all times. Beer selections included at least 4 German varieties; I don't remember which were tap vs. bottled. Wooden bathroom doors are painted "Damen" und "Herren" with a picture of a person of the appropriate sex dressed in colorful German peasant costume. In the rear are two more dining rooms. There's some good solid German items on the menu, of which we tried the sauerkraut balls... Yum! Secret recipe includes diced corned beef mixed in with the sauerkraut. They serve the balls on a bed of nicely browned kraut, with mustard. Very tasty, only wish they'd been just a little bigger, or that the price maybe a buck less. The flavor of southeast Indiana is here too, as prominent on the menu is their version of the famous fried chicken. We enjoyed a very good deal, whole chicken plus salad bar for two at $18.50. The chicken? What can I say. It's absolutely delicious. It's a style of fried chicken that apparently is not found anywhere other than Southeast Indiana; I call it the "crust that's not a crust." There's no breading but the skin is so crispy and it's coated with spices. The emphasis is on pepper, but its flavorful, not spicy-hot. The meat is very moist, the white meat too, and it really is out of this world. High marks on the salad bar, which in addition to fresh crisp mixed greens and assorted homemade dressings, including many cold side dishes which went perfectly with the fried chicken. And it also included three dessert items: strawberry Jell-O with fruit, tapioca pudding, and a wondrous something they simply called "the pineapple walnut." It was pineapple walnut heaven, let me tell you. Creamy, crunchy and delectable; it would probably have made a pie filling to die for! But with this stuff surrounded by piecrust it might've been too much to take. As it was I had two helpings. If I could say that the service was prompt, attentive, and with that warm friendly small-town atmosphere, I would give five stars. Unfortunately, I can't say that last bit. Service was really lackadaisical; I actually had to speak up and ask for a refill as the server passed my table. And they were not super busy. We were not checked on it all, and when we asked to have the leftovers wrapped she was unfortunately not really helpful. I almost sensed an attitude of "we know you're tourists and you're here for our wonderful local food so we're doing you a favor." However, go in expecting only fair-to-middling service, and you will enjoy some scrumptious food in a great old world atmosphere! We've been to the Brau Haus three times in the last year or so, as we are traveling near Batesville/Oldenburg. Cheryl and I believe this to be the best chicken joint on the planet. They even have Beer and a Full Bar. Last night we were there with fourteen folks from the www.BuckeyeMinis.com from Cincinnati and the www,MiniCCI.org club from Indianapolis. Were taken to room we had not seen before at the rear that probably sat 60 more people. It started as us being the only table and soon that room started to fill as well. I did call them about an hour before and they were more than ready for us with the table for fourteen already set. Again, we had the chicken, each meal cooked to order. We always order the Whole Chicken at only $11.50 with some extra trimmings like salad bar, fries, rings etc, We order the whole chicken as we know that we won't eat it all and we take the balance home. Decor/Ambiance: The decor/ambiance reminds me of an old rustic restaurant when you look at the outside and inside of the restaurant. I mixed up a fruit salad thinking it was tuna and put it on my salad (they really should label it). Our family of 4 ate here for $38.99. They were packed for a Tuesday so service was a tad slow. I look at this from two perspectives. Part of me says the service was slow and the burger was good but not the best I've ever had. The other (and more vocal) part says... Sauerkraut balls were AMAZING! I'd been craving some, and these really hit the spot. So much like the homemade ones I grew up with!
