Don't like to give negative reviews, but this has to be said. Just tried to have dinner there and was stared at by server and bartender. No one said Hello, be with you in a moment, nothing. My wife and I were staying in Metamora for our 25th Anniversary and was told that that food was good. It may be, but it might be helpful to at least acknowledge patrons. My friend and I had lunch here for the first time yesterday and really enjoyed it. We started with the kraut balls, which are really good. We each ordered the breaded tenderloin and the salad bar. We stopped for a late lunch today, and found the food to be good and the service fast and friendly. My only complaint is that I have a severe allergy to onions and asked the waitress if the soup had onion in it. She checked with the kitchen and assured me it did not. Best German food I have had. The sauerkraut is fresh, homemade deliciousness. The fried sauerkraut balls and mustard are delicious. I had the pork schnitzel and it beat out many world famous schnitzels I have had. The red cabbage is so absolutely delicious. Tried my mom's fried chicken, excellent as well. Our first visit to Brau House did not disappoint! Larger than it appears on the outside, the Brau Haus has a nice selection of rooms, all with different themes...a local sports room, a local history room, a larger party/banquet room, and, of course, a bar. Our server, Pat, was a treat. She did a great job of telling us the history of the place (and the town) and gave us a good explanation of the menu. We chose sauerkraut balls for our appetizer, and they were awesome. Nice mix of flavors, without one overwhelming the other. I REALLY like them. Being a breaded tenderloin fan, that's what I chose, and it was absolutely amazing. You can really taste the German influence in the breading and seasoning, so it's not "quite" traditional.....but it's over the top good. All in all, an amazing experience. read more

Ladies like the pickle fries the pork schnitzel was passable had chopped up boiled eggs on top. potato pancakes were pretty good with the red sauerkraut I really did like the fried sauerkraut appetizer. German potato salad was OK service was a little slow because it's Friday night I'm sure. left wanting drinks refills for quite a while. What stood out the most about the place is how friendly the bartender and other patrons were, even though it's a small local joint. They only had one German beer on draft and 4 bottles (that I could see); good, but not as many choices as we'd hoped to find. We tried the sauerkraut balls, potato pancakes, and warm German potato salad. All were quite good. I did see the salad bar that would have been nice with a meal, but didn't partake. This is a great German place to check out if you are in Oldenburg! Oldenburg is an adorable, quaint town and this restaurant fits right in! It's bigger that it looks from the outside. Parking was easy, and it was starting to get crowded at noon. I had the chicken noodle soup. It was a little peppery. One person had fried chicken which was good and plentiful. This restaurant is located in the exceptionally picturesque, bucolic, town of Oldenburg. A very Geman flavored burg and so very nice. Being in a nearby town on business and dining alone I chose to sit at the bar. My old friend Mary eventually noticed I was there. I reminded her I had been there previously twenty-five years ago but she didn't remember me. It's OK. I told her I remembered her, she asked me what her name was while fiddling with the cash register. The fellow next to me reminded me it was Mary and I told her "Mary!". Everyone in the bar laughed. I struck up a casual conversation with the fellow sitting nearby at the bar and within minutes I felt as though I was a life long resident of Oldenburg. We spent a couple of hours just chatting which is so nice when you are out of town alone. I think I signed up to be on their annual festival committee. I love it here. Bottom Line: Excellent food! Have you ever taken a bite of a meal that just made you happy? At the risk of sounding like a total cheese ball, that's how I felt here. I'm from Tampa, and although we have German restaurants which are delicious in their own ways, this meal reminded me of something my German grandmother would serve me. I had the pork schnitzel plate. For 17.00 I had a huge mug of beer and more food than I could eat- it came with salad, red cabbage and several potato pancakes. The schnitzel was seasoned very well and was tender inside while still crisp outside, even while lying in gravy. I'm not sure what is in this gravy but it was peppery and had a flavor that I couldn't quite put my finger on- way better than any other gravy I've had in the past. The cabbage and pancakes were equally delicious. The bartender/server was attentive and efficient. It is a very simple place but it was exactly what I needed on a cold night in a new town. read more

We just love this place! The Fried chicken exemplifies Hoosier fried chicken, peppery, salty, crispy skin and juicy inside,,, great with an ice cold beer or iced tea. Salad bar is excellent and fresh also,,, has everything from pudding, pasta, toss salad, cole slaw etc,,, other menu items are good also, sauerkraut balls w spicy mustard,,yum. There are lots of good things on the menu if you don't like chicken. We eat here about once every 10 days or so even though it is about a 20 mile drive. There are about 37 or so restaurants on the chicken trail in south east indiana, we have, not intentionally, eaten at about 27 or 28 of them and we think this is the best of them all. read more

After reading all of the rave reviews, I was looking forward to my first meal at the brau haus. The salad bar was very, very good, but was disappointed with what came next. The chicken batter was so thick with pepper that it really seemed like the lid came off of the shaker during the preparation process and dumped into the batter. The batter was so thick with pepper it was barely palatable. Mashed potatoes were instant which was too bad as the gravy was very good. The sauerkraut was out of a can. My brother got the sausage patties and it was rubbery. I doubt our families will try it again. read more
