Vegan brunch paradise! There are not a lot of places that offer a good vegan brunch but this place does it! They seated our group of 10 very quickly and the service was great. Two weeks ago I enjoyed perfect mushroom quiche with exquisite service and a full coffee cup at all times. Today the quiche was barely warm, the salad lightly grazed with a tiny bit of dressing, an empty water glass most of the time and a coffee cup that was grudginly refilled once when I begged. My waitress Sarah was more interested in sweeping the floor. Next time I want mushroom quiche, I'll take the metro downtown to Le Pain Quotidien. read more

I have been wanting to go in there for a few weeks. Today, I decided I needed a muffin and maybe a cup of coffee. Prices are comparable to other coffee shops, the cakes look amazing. I got a banana nut muffin and an orange cranberry. Do not waste your money: muffins from Costco and Walmart are way better. The banana nut one is is dry and tasteless. I am hoping the other one is a little better. For over $4 a pop, I expected quite a bit more flavor and less dryness. I'm giving 2 stars because the ambiance seemed nice and relaxed. read more

I ordered a boba and asked them if they could use oat milk, to which they said yes. I can't drink dairy for health reasons. At first, I didn't realize that the drink had dairy because the strawberry flavor was too strong, but I had a full-on flare up after drinking the boba (which only happens when I accidentally drink dairy!). What's worse is that I even doubled checked with them if the drink didn't have dairy, but apparently they were wrong. Whether it was an accident or not, they should be more careful because we are talking about somebody's health here. read more

I live right near here and always considered but reviews are mixed (though recent reviews are strong). The breakfast was fantastic. The homemade muesli, which I don't eat often, is unbelievably great. And the service, which has been called out before, was really friendly and fast, on a busy Sunday morning. Plus, it's cute inside with a little breakfast counter you can sit at. I will try again for certain and if consistent, I will be here often. read more

Yikes. Just paid $17.22 for two chocolate and one almond croissant. Not a single flake to be heard or tasted when biting into them. More gummy of a texture than anything. Came here with my mom-- great because we found parking in back and came through the back door. Always bustling atmosphere and great for chai lattes :) Our waitress was very kind and service was wonderful. I had a lamb gyro yummm. It comes with chips or a salad. It's quite filling. Stumbled upon this little cafe. Was super tempted by the pastries but decided to sit down and got the bircher muesli. Never had it before so I didn't really know what to expect but the dish is served cold which I was kinda happy about. Reminded me a little of a parfait. Tons and tons of fruit including grapes, strawberries, green apple, cantaloupe and a little bit of orange. I ordered an Americano and asked for milk on the side. Americano is a good size and pretty strong. Used up all the milk ha! Anyway, plenty of seats inside and a cute patio out front. I'd give it a try :) read more

I hadn't been to Bread and Chocolate in about 3 years but used to love going there, so when my kids were in town we brought them there for breakfast. They had checked out the menu on their website and liked the all-inclusive brunch, which had a reasonable price for what you get listed on the website. When we arrived, there was a sandwich board out front that had that same price listed. However, when we sat down and looked at the menu, there was a price several dollars more. In fact, the price was even higher than that listed on one of the other menus. We asked the server about it and he said it was the price that was in the middle between the highest and lowest. I wanted them to enjoy their meal so I told the kids to go ahead and order it. I mentioned to the server that there was a lower price on the sandwich board, and if that isn't the price they should take the board down. He ignored me. Meanwhile, we ate our breakfast, although my daughter-in-law said she didn't think it was worth the price. The food was just average, not like I remembered it. When the bill came, we were charged the highest price. When I pointed that out to the server, I told him that now I wanted the price that was on the board out front and also on the website. He told me that he has to ask the manager. He comes back and had taken some money off, but did not give me the price that was listed on the board and the website . I also pointed out that he had not removed the board out Front with the wrong price. He told me that nobody else has noticed. I told him we would not be coming back. He brought us back a check that was unchanged, but he had crossed off the line where you add a tip. I'm someone who always leaves a tip and usually a generous one. It felt very uncomfortable to not leave a tip. We all were very confused by what had just happened. Unfortunately, I will not be going back. The food quality wasn't what it was and the customer service certainly has gone downhill quite a bit. We did notice as we drove past on our way home that they had removed the erroneous sign at least. The croissant was just ok, I was excited since it is a pastry shop but definitely a good little coffee shop if you are in the area. read more

Came here because I had passed it so many times and wanted to try a new latte! The interior is huge! We decided to sit outside on their sidewalk patio that is covered because we had our dog with us. I was surprised it was a formal sit down restaurant. I had assumed it was a order-at-the-counter place. The service was super friendly. The latte was delicious!!! Exactly how I like them. Not too sweet w strong coffee flavor. The quiche was also very very good! The salad was meh. Basically just spring mix w a little bit of dressing. I do think this place is a bit overpriced, but that probably is necessary for the location and huge size of the inside. I would come back for the latte and maybe a quiche! read more

Solid coffee, pastry and brunch cafe. Nice variety of menu items, breakfast, salads, sandwiches and of course the pastry counter. It was difficult for me to tell what was actually made fresh in house (like if the kitchen was also a bakery), even the pastries up front in the counter. We tried the Meusli, quiche lorraine, tuna sandwich, and hot chocolate. All were pretty average, good but didn't blow me away. The quiche and sandwich came with side salads which was nice, I asked about the dressings and unfortunately all were bottled. Still good though. What was really good was the hot chocolate, the bread on the sandwich, and the fruit on the meusli. Everyone was really friendly, the atmosphere was nice (there is a nice outdoor patio) and family friendly, and the prices were decent (about $50 for three lunches and non-al drinks before tip). read more

Love this place for a quick muffin and soup (leek and potato is superb). Our dine in brunch experience was nice nothing to brag about ambiance wise, but everyone, even my picky father, enjoyed their meal. He had a gyro sandwich, my mom had the Greek salad and my partner and I both enjoyed the salmon sandwich. Solid place for a short wait time and local vibe. read more

Blueberry scone was soft with blueberries that were there but were more of a mildly flavored scone. Best thing about the place is the comfortable Coffee house atmosphere. We got the shakshuka which was so flavorful and fragrant! The eggs were perfectly poached. The shakshuka came with a toasted bagel which was unusual. I would have preferred normal toast or a baguette instead. The service was subpar and when we told the waitress we didn't receive the chai latte we ordered, the waiter seemed annoyed. I would come back for the shakshuka but I am not sure why the server was annoyed about the forgotten chai latte. read more

Came here for a quick lunch with my mom. I remember the Chinese restaurant that was in the space previously but had never tried this spot before. The food was delicious. Came here on a Saturday afternoon while in the area looking for a coffee shop. We ordered the Mocha and Vanilla Mocha along with a croissant and Key lime tart. Overall the food and drinks left a lot to be desired. Because this spot has chocolate in their name we were looking forward to the mocha drinks but I could barely taste the mocha. We were taking a walk around our neighborhood and decided that we wanted to grab a coffee and a sweet treat. Bread and Chocolate was open and seemed inviting. Several people were sitting out on the front patio, despite the chilly weather. While inside we ordered at the counter-- a napoleon and a slice of tres leches cake. We were told that anything we wanted to eat in the cafe had to be ordered through table service with the wait staff. We found a table and ordered our pastries and a few drinks. The coffee and hot chocolate were warm and tasty. Coffee was served with cream and sugar on the side. The slice of Tres Leches cake was large -- the filling was creamy and sweet and the buttercream frosting was dusted with spices. It was delicious. The Napoleon was my favorite. The pastry cream was thick and not too sweet and the pastry was light and crispy. The best part is always the fondant on the top! While the cost of everything seemed a bit steep (adding on tax and tip: $25), I would go back again for more treats and warm drinks. The cafe was quiet but with several people eating and chatting. The waitress was friendly and helpful and got everything we needed quickly and without issue. Stopped by bread and chocolate to grab a coffee and a pastry; we live down the block, but a year or two ago a friend had brought chocolate and vanilla cakes to us for a dinner party dessert and they were awful- so we kept putting off returning. We ordered a mocha latte, a vanilla latte, two ham and cheese croissants, and a Napoleon (the reason this spot was put on my list again). We both agreed the vanilla latte was by far superior to the mocha (the mocha tasted more like a slightly coffee-y hot chocolate), and we both enjoyed the ham and cheese croissant. The top had a seasoning that really enhanced the flavor! We'd definitely get one again. As for the Napoleon, it was decent but I'm super picky with them. The cream was a bit more whipped cream like than custard. If you're popping in, get the ham and cheese croissant and a vanilla latte! read more

Unfortunately, the food here is very mediocre. On a recent Sunday, my family and I stopped in for brunch. The almond croissant was dry and tasteless. I really wonder if they make any of these bakery items on the premises. The chocolate crêpe and eclair were also just 'meh'. My 14-year-old son did not even finish his a clear and hot chocolate. Generally, food is below what you could get elsewhere. My Mediterranean omelette was bland and unoriginal. Hash browns inedible. It's really too bad because it would not take much work to make this food spark a bit more. On the positive side, the location is great if you live in the neighborhood and the vibe in this cute little setting can be charming. read more

I was actually expecting a little more from this place. I have driven by so many times and I am glad I finally got to try. I got the flourless chocolate cake. It was pretty rich, but something didn't sit right. I feel that the flavor was "watered down" a bit for a lack of a better term. It was definitely rich, and it definitely tasted like a flourless chocolate cake but something wasn't right. The sticky bun was pretty good, very buttery. Would I be back? This is a terrific place to meet friends or family in town to visit. It's the antithesis of today's fancy eateries such as TATTE and others. I find it comforting as a member of the Greatest Generation, Baby Boomers. The waiters are nice and if you tell them exactly what you want, you'll get it. They don't have pistachio croissants like TATTE, but I get three scrambled eggs and coffee - no toast or bread - I'm off bread now for 2 years and I miss it badly, but it is impossible to lose weight eating bread daily. Parking in the old broken up parking lot in back or on Connecticut Avenue NW out in front. After you depart, head to Magruder's, the 150 year-old grocery story a block north next to the old movie theater for a similar experience, but in grocery shopping. They also have a huge selection of alcohol - I'm not a drinker - but I suspect that's how they make most of their revenue. I have been here twice and have had mixed feelings about the place. The first time I wanted a quick bite before work and tried the croissants. They were excellent. So crisp and delish. The second time, I wanted a sweet treat. The eclair did not impress me at all. I never had a more disappointment with an eclair. The dough tasted fine, but was surprised to see it was topped with milk chocolate...I have never seen That. Then the cream filling was not tasty at all, it was smooth and loved that the size and amount of filling there was but the overall effect of the eclair was disappointing. Both times I have also had the same experience with the staff. Nobody is paying attention and I had to wait a good while, and when I did I was met with disdain/attitude. Like I was bothering them. You don't like being in food service, then leave. There are better attitudes out there. read more

I've sat on this review for nearly a year now, trying to decide between 3 or 4 stars. After tonight's meal I'm settling on 2.5 Stars, rounded up to 3. It isn't that anything specific went wrong tonight, but more an overall realization that the best meals might be the anomaly. I end up here every few months as it is a convenient spot to meet a friend. I almost always order the shakshuka and she orders crepes. I've also had their omelette and a variety of pastries, and we always order coffee. My advice to you if you eat eggs is to try the shakshuka, which is as fun to say as it is to eat. Two eggs are poached in a spiced tomato sauce. Best with bread, so ask for a bread basket if none is offered. The pastries I've tried have all been good, but I've only visited at the end of the day, and I'll bet they are even better at lunch. The coffee is ok, but not worth getting anything beyond a standard cup. Too bad, as the espresso machine is impressive. This is a nice enough place to while away an hour or so with friends, but does not reach for anything higher. If you go, know that they share a parking lot behind the buildings, and that parking is free for 60 minutes. If you think you'll be longer there is plenty of street parking in the neighborhood. read more
