I really love this place - the M St. location is near our place, so we frequently go there for brunch on weekends, as well as afternoon coffee and pastries. The waitstaff have gotten to know my young daughter and me, and they are very kind. Their coffee is good, strong in the European style, and their tarts and pastries are wonderful (in particular, the raspberry tart with dark chocolate). The croissants and brioche are great as well. For brunch, I never pass up the shakshouka, a Mediterranean/Northwest African dish with a tomato, onion and pepper sauce and poached eggs on top. They serve it with crusty grilled bread (this is traditional, but sometimes you have to ask for the bread), and it is amazing. My husband favors the omelets, and they are very good as well. One note: For weekend brunch, if you arrive much after 9 am, there will be a line out the door! read more

I love this place for an easy, comforting brunch! Sure, it's not a 5-star restaurant but it has pretty darn good coffee and breakfast selections. The egg benedict is pretty solid and is my go-to when I want something savory. The nutella crepes are AMAZING and hit the spot every time. I enjoy their lattes and large coffee selection as well. If you're a tourist staying in the area, definitely try this place for breakfast as it is probably less expensive than breakfasts at the hotels. read more

I had a Dr. appt at Kaiser Permanente at West End, DC this morning and after stopped in to Bread and Chocolate (same bldg) for coffee and a large filled pastry. around 8:40a.m. I went to sit down and the young tall African man at the Cashier's desk yelled to me very loud and rudely: "You cannot sit at that table - that is for meals only; you must sit at the Counter". There were 5 customers in the entire Restaurant. I am an older person (70) and have back problems so unable to sit at a high counter. I just sat at the table and the man at the Counter stood there and glared at me the entire time as I drank my coffee. There were a couple of people that came in, paid and left and I observed that he never smiled or seemed pleasant once. He operated with lightening speed, grabbed at the pastry bags and handed them over as if he could not wait to get rid of the customers as quickly as possible. Considering that there were 5 customers in the entire place, I just think that this man is a poor representation of the Hospitality industry. I would not hire him for interaction with anyone, and definitely not in a customer sales or service position. I will never go back and certainly tell my friends of my rude experience there. read more

Came here for brunch on a Sunday, just in time as a line formed behind us. It seems like a pretty good restaurant for what it serves, but I wasn't blown away by anything except the fresh orange juice (which was amazing, by the way). The pastry I bought for later was also pretty good, and probably would have been better earlier in the day. I went for breakfast today and was horribly disappointed. I ordered a hot latte and granola with strawberries and bananas, which the man at the registered told me about when I asked if I could have fruit and yogurt without melon/cantaloupe, which I hate. So I got the latte and went to sit outside...and waited...and waited. Finally, the food came. A huge bowl with a little granola in the middle surrounded by bananas/strawberries. Ok, it could have used more granola, but the fruit was nice and fresh. Then there was a side bowl of fruit: grapes, strawberries, and mostly cantaloupe.. Hmmm, guess that comes with all the breakfasts??? I pulled out the few berries/grapes and left the lopes in the bowl. Finally tasted the latte : BITTER, awful. I asked the waitress to take it off the bill and returned it. I waited and waited to get the bill only to find the granola was $7 (ugh, ok, it's dc) but they charged me $6 for the unasked for little bowl of mostly cantaloupe! Damn it. It had taken so long to get the bill that I didn't have time left to complain about the extra fruit and charge. I'll never go back. Bad coffee, bad service, bad practices. read more

Only reason I am not giving 5 stars is for the poor service-- had to ask multiple times for basic things. Order came wrong the first time... ex-- order berry berry pancakes, and no berries came. We bought a chocolate cake two days ago which was Monday and we left it in the fridge and we were gonna celebrate my sisters birthday yesterday so when we cut the cake and we taste it and then we found out that taste and smells like alcohol or nail polish. Really poor experience here. We came around 10:30 for breakfast/brunch on Saturday. We sat at a table outside, the waiter had brought waters to 2 of the 6 of us who had arrived first. Once the rest of the party arrived, no one came to the table for 20 minutes. We had to ask 2 different people for service, then wait another 5 minutes for them to bring water, and we made sure to order since we had their attention. When they finally brought our coffees after we ordered, they forgot half of them. I had to go inside and ask for them. Then had to go inside again to ask about our food after another half hour, and was told they would check on it, and given a major attitude. When it finally came the order wasn't all correct, they didn't add or subtract the ingredients we requested (no tomatoes, sauce on the side, etc). And again I had to go inside to get our check. The only quick service was when they'd seen us put our cash in the check folder. Granted the food was ok, but not great or anything. And certainly not the wait or the service. We barely received an acknowledgement, let alone apology, for the poor service. I'd have been more forgiving if they had at least tried to apologize. But they didn't. read more

I used to go there often to grab coffee\\OJ and a pastry on my way to work, on the weekends with my boyfriend, when company came in, etc. Today was the first time I went in with the intention of sitting down and eating something cooked in their kitchen, as I was working from home today. Maybe it was because I was alone, maybe it was because I wasn't wearing a suit today, or maybe it was because I looked like a young student and they don't like that image, but I had the worst dining experience I've ever had before. I walked in, and the manager looked me up and down. I asked if they have free wi-fi (which they advertise on their website), and he reluctantly said yes. He sat me at the bar (even though there were several empty tables), but this didn't bother me much as I understand I'm by myself and I could have said something if it was that big of a deal. But this is when it started to really be a bad experience. I was never waited on-- I had to stop a waitress to ask for a vanilla latte and a water. I never got my water, but that didn't bother me much either at the time. I intended on staying for a little while and then ordering an early lunch, but no one ever checked up on me-- not a single time. Finally (probably about thirty to forty-five minutes after I sat down), I noticed my laptop getting low on battery. I caught a waitress's attention, and asked if they have any outlets that I could use. She pointed to a table, but said I couldn't sit there since it was a 4-person table and they are very busy. Eleven out of sixteen tables inside were available at this time. Soon thereafter, the wifi was shut off and I was immediately handed my check. While I can't be sure that the two incidences are connected, I am willing to bet that they shut down the wifi because they wanted me to leave, and they handed me my check for the same reason. I told the manager that I was unhappy with my service, but he did not seem to care much. I will not be stopping by anymore on my way to work, and I will encourage my friends to similarly avoid them from now on. The starbucks across the street (on M & 24) is a much friendlier environment, as I'm sitting here and the workers went out of their way to ensure I was able to get online. I've been coming to this Bread & Chocolate location for years and I genuinely think this place is a solid three star spot. First of all, the brunch deal for the weekends is a great deal - juice, coffee, pastries and a meal for $16 is pretty great for the District. However, I'll admit, sometimes the reasoning behind the cheapness of this sweet deal becomes apparent very quickly when you realize the pastries are stale or the service is less-than acceptable-- this isn't an every-time occurrence, sometimes things aren't stale and the service is great, but sometimes it's stale pastries and bad service. Honestly, it's hit or miss. However, the saving grace of B&C is it's main dishes-- they are wonderful! I love the French toast, German pancakes and the Cheever omelette, but really all the breakfast/lunch meals seem great. Admittedly, I've only been to B&C for brunch but I'd bet the dinner experience is similar. read more

I want this place to be good... I really do! I mean it's supposed to be a European bakery. But, I'm consistently disappointed. I've now tried lunch and several times popped in for some sweets. It looks great when you come in. Decadent cakes and a good looking classic menu, but the taste just doesn't cut it. The carrot cake I had one day was not moist and almost seemed a bit stale. The panini I had was too wet from the tomatoes, not thoroughly toasted, and frankly tasted of nothing. I've also had cookies that are boring and croissants that are too heavy rather than fluffy. And the coffee is too watery; including any of the coffee drinks such as cappuccinos or lattes. If you've ever had coffee in Europe you know they don't skimp on taste and it always has that nutty rich flavor. I hate giving bad reviews, but hope it will help improve the place. It's getting two stars rather than one just because the staff is nice. read more

Outstanding. We were visiting DC for a few days from Florida and (with so many restaurants to choose from) went here for breakfast two days in a row! I suggest getting the all inclusive brunch. It comes with an entrée, coffee ,orange juice and basket of pastries. You can not beat it for the price. (I think $16?) The pastries are made in house and delicious (a must)! The customer service was great. My server was a young lady by the name of Michelle, she was very pleasant we had a great conversation. I actually only wanted to leave a comment about how the manager was yelling at her from l across the restaurant for no reason. It was very unpleasant to watch a male talk a female in this manner. I have been to Bread & Chocolate every Sunday with my boyfriend since early January of this year. Before then, I would occasionally go for a quick brunch/lunch meal. In fact, this used to be one of my favorite brunch spots up until this past Sunday. My boyfriend orders the Southwestern panini and I order the Pankuken (nutella crepes) every time. The waiter we had this time not only told us both that our orders are off the menu, but also when I tired to order a new crepe that was on the menu, he said that they are out of that too. Finally I found a third item on the menu to order, and he came back 10 minutes later and said they did not have that either. At the end of the meal I realized I ordered 5 times before I received my meal - I ended up having to order off the Kids Menu. How does a restaurant not 5 of the items they claim to have on their menu? Not only was I disappointed that they got rid of my boyfriend/my favorite meals, they also made us re-order several times before we finally found something they were able to make. We went here at around 11a.m./12p.m., so no where near closing time. I am so disappointed to say that I will not be going to Bread and Chocolate anymore. read more

Okay. Not great, and not bad. Quick to get us seated, ordered and food came out pretty quick too. Menu is okay. I had special diet needs, and they made no mistakes there. Eggs were cooked well. My husband enjoyed his french toast. Some things could be improved, namely the spacing of tables - i was back to back with the kid seated at the next table, and all the tables seem to be packed in as tight as possible. I watched a couple with a baby in a stroller take sit at one table and block 2 others with all their stuff. And i really didn't see how they could have done anything different. From the surprisingly light, slightly sweet German pancakes to the perfectly spiced Shakshuka, this cafe can't be beat. The staff is super friendly; my husband and I were only here on a short 3 day trip and when we came in, everyone greeted us as if we'd been coming here for years. Even remembered our drink preferences! Families, business folk, kids - all are made welcome. I wish we lived closer as this bright and airy cafe could easily become a regular weekend brunch spot for us. read more

The homemade pastry basket and Lavazza coffee are a meal by themselves, but it is the weekend so get the entire package and enjoy a great meal.
