I ate here with my friend after a great workout at the next-door squash venue. We waited for a decent amount of time for our food. There was also an odd timing with the waitress. She came three times to take our order and we felt pressured to stop talking so that way she could take our order. Very awkward on the timing. My friend and I both ordered the salmon eggs benedict. Again, mixed feelings on the food. We were starving and finished it pretty quickly. However, the food came out cold. I was happy that the waitress offered to bring us bread with the food, but she brought it out when we received our main meal. It was our first time at this restaurant and we were unaware they even served bread. Otherwise, we would have asked for it while we waited. Looks like Sunday is the day for the $18 brunch menu, with mimosas and an entree included. I would come back to give the restaurant another try, especially on a brunch day. read more

I have been coming to bread and chocolate for over 15 years and, always went there for the hot chocolate and maybe sometimes i will seat and have breakfast. I've seen so many managers come and go at the 23rd Street location, but none of them has ever impressed me as Chelsea. She greeted her customers as soon as they walk through the door and she is always smilling. She seem to be always very busy, and the place is usually packed, she keeps her composure always. She waites on me sometimes and provided the best service I've ever had at bread and chocolate in 15 years. She was the server barista busser front counter and yet she kept her staff well together while smiling the whole time and give fives other table the best service they ever had. I tried the apple cinnamon crepes. They came with Bavarian cream inside but it doesn't say it on the menu. I told the waitress and she said the entire menu needs to be updated. I appreciated the honesty but it doesn't look good to customers when you order something that comes out differently. I tried to eat a chocolate croissant and it was impossible. It was so stale I couldn't even bite it. She even tried warming it and it was inedible. I told her she should throw them o it and she brushed it off. We gave this place a try in spite of the other really good places we've tried in that area. Although our waitress was very sweet, there was clearly a communication barrier. In addition, our order of french toast and eggs took almost an hour to receive. The waitress did offer us some sliced muffins and offered her apologies. It was late in the day and the place was not crowded, our order was simple and there seemed to be plenty of staff. The food was nothing to speak and the OJ had a strange taste, clearly not fresh squeezed. After waiting almost an hour for our food, we never received the toast we ordered with our eggs; we had to ask 2 more times We were finally brought what appeared to be small, round, cold Italian bread. I live in the area and stopped for a glass of wine and snack -- the wine was eh and I can get a better quality wine from Trader Joe's for $7 a bottle. I ordered the Mediterranean sampler, and that was abysmal. The pita was microwaved to a near cracker like, yet chewy consistency, and the hummus was minuscule and had no flavor whatsoever. The falafel I fed mostly to the birds. SAMPLER 10.99 Hummus with olive oil, Kalamara Olives, 4 falafel and pita. Not my bag whatsoever. Their pastries - like croissant/ chocolate croissant are SO stale that I'm surprised that they don't have mold on them. Thus isn't an exaggeration. I haven't logged on to Yelp in a while and felt the need to worn others! it was inedible. I had walked in just for a regular coffee with milk to go (just the standard coffee). The guy at the register took my order and then disappeared to help different people and didn't come back for almost 10 mins. The shop looks spacious and upscale. It has a good collection of desserts when I was there and the raspberry chocolate cake is so yummy. My friend said the raspberry-flavored chocolate mousse is the secret sauce and I agreed because it takes the cake to a higher level than a typical American cake. read more

Ordered breakfast and not too busy. Food took over an hour after we ordered for three people. We weren't only o Ed frustrated. Waiter told us every ten minutes food will be right out. Reminded me of 30 Rock episode where Matt Damon playing airline pilot tells Liz Lemon "we just tell them Another 30 minutes even though we have no idea". Brought out one dish and five minutes later other two meals. If you have time to burn it's ok but if you are hungry find someplace else to eat. Service and ambiance are fine. The menu has good variety with delicious sounding items. We had Belgian waffle with bananas and chocolate and a bowl of muesli. The muesli was watery and tasteless. The Belgian waffle could not be cut with a fork ... or a knife! We then tried an orange cranberry muffin. One cranberry in the entire muffin and the muffin was stale. I doubt they are baking on premises. Not many customers for noontime on a sunny Sunday. That should have been the warning. Whoever created the menu must not have created the recipes for the items. All this place needs is a one day visit by a good food consultant to help them deliver on the promise of the menu. I hope they upgrade their food. read more

I used to go to B&C near Eastern market and loved it, and was very disappointed when it closed (this was years ago). I just stumbled on the last B&C in DC recently-- it's near my office and I stopped after an in person doctor's appointment at GW. At any rate, I was very disappointed. The iced latte was pretty good, and there's a very nice outdoor patio to sit at, but the scone was hard, dry, and pretty stale. The inside of the store looks sad and worn out. I'd recommend the coffee shops that also have food on 21st and L NW, right down the street, Gregory's, For Five Coffee, and Bourbon. read more

Came here after a movie at West End Cinema, mainly due to convenience and being enticed by the name. I tried a really good latte, a fabulous French dip sandwich, and a bleh muffin. This place has a lot of positives: the location is convenient, it's well lit, has cute decor, and all their pastries are half off after 4 pm. This modern re-do of the old world dessert salon has a glassy interior and cheery atmosphere. It tries to exude an air of sophistication and it largely accomplishes that. It's not perfection all the time, but it's hanging in there. It has had to adjust in the face of the coffee house explosion in our country. I have seen it ebb and flow over the years, particularly with the wait staff; and it's really been more about having enough servers on the floor rather than competency. I find that their crews are mature professionals and that their chefs generally have proven to be dependable. Bread & Chocolate's commitment to a mostly traditional menu and the reliable execution of that food preparation is why they are still in business (for 28 years). They bake all of their goods in their own facility in Virginia. Please do not expect exceedingly speedy service. It's supposed to be somewhat of an experience from another era. If I mentioned watercress sandwiches and lavender tea--would that help bring that time to mind? Alas, these are not available, but that type of food is. The menu is thoughtful; the weekend brunch is a good deal for $15. Their fresh pastries include the classics and then some. Have a look at the display case. The opera cake, chocolate diamond, white chocolate mousse and tiramisu are pretty yummy. You can also pick up some bread to take home: their almond croissants are kryptonite--best in town (my opinion); the plain croissants are good; and the brioche is trustworthy. The eggs benedict selections are usually spot-on. I have been ordering them for years and there has never been a time that I was disappointed in the hollandaise sauce or egg preparation. I also enjoy the cold salads; the Norwegian smoked salmon platter is generous. There are 5 locations altogether in the DMV. I started out with the original one on M and 23rd Streets NW in DC and I still go there. I appreciate the indoor/outdoor seating choices; it's right next to the West End Cinema. Quite a lot of the guests from the surrounding big name hotels come scurrying over for breakfast once they discover this place; it can be a virtual UN in the mornings. You can catch construction workers coming by to get some of their goodies too. The Alexandria, VA spot is charming; its manager Mansour and server Trish have wonderfully sunny dispositions and it helps that it is nicely positioned in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. I also frequent the Takoma Bistro in Takoma Park, MD. It's a part of the Bread & Chocolate family; ownership however wants it referred to as the Takoma Bistro specifically. Its menu is the about the same as the others except for dinner, when there are more hearty dishes offered up. Tip: Pastries get discounted 50% after 4 pm M-F. They can vanish quickly. Go for an early dinner and get a delectable bargain dessert at the same time. read more

COFFEE & cookie REVIEW Only! I stopped in here during my lunch hour to grab a coffee to go. I asked for cafe americano and a chocolate chip cookie. I had to wait a few minutes while they were making my coffee. The coffee was extra hot which I love but the flavor was just meh. I would of rather went to starbucks. The chocolate chip cookie tasted very cheap and not even close to being fresh and homemade.Also the price for those 2 items were over $5. I don't think I should have paid that much for crap. I will say this, I would come back to this location for lunch because it does look really good (that is why I gave it 3 stars, for potential). I will just avoid the coffee and desserts. read more

Sat on the patio outside. Service was prompt. Had the spicy asian chicken salad, it was lettuce, peanut sauce and some shredded chicken (white and dark meat, not very good quality). Also tried the Strawberry, watermelon, fruit salad plus added chicken. It was literally huge strawberries and watermelon with a little lettuce. Mostly fruit.
