The atmosphere, itself was lively and staff enjoyed sharing about each product. I ordered a Hazelnut Ganache square. So delicious, and rich in taste. The hazelnut ganache taste reminds me of Nutella and a decadent thick chocolate with a homemade graham cracker base. Great bakery (and more!) a short walk from the Van Ness Metro. I got a pain au chocolat, but I felt bad about making a long trip just for one pastry, so I added a lemon poppy seed muffin. Oops. It came out to just shy of $10, but I'd say it's worth it. Both pastries were delicious. The pain au chocolat had a crisp shell and a flaky crumb, with just the right amount of chocolate filling. The muffin was rich and heavily flavored with lemon and icing, teetering on the edge of being too sweet but never quite corssing over. The narrow shop is packed with other items as well, besides pastries and breads, they offer prepared foods, pasta sauces, and other snacks. It all seems to be premium product offerings, with the price to match. Excellent food, but with both the distance cost and money cost, I'm not sure how often I'll be back. read more

Heard this was a must visit, and they weren't wrong. Be sure to get there early, or plan to stand in line for at least 15 minutes as they have so many visitors. Banana pudding was flavorless - tasted of bland whipped cream and banana, couldn't taste the pudding or dense shortbread (cookie? cake?) in it. Black sesame latte could use a touch of sweetener and more sesame (it was very milky). But everything else was fantastic, including the chocolate almond croissant and walnut cranberry bread were fantastic. My husband and I thought it was ok the kids really enjoyed it.The bread was extremely hard I'm just happy I didn't lose a tooth and the salmon had a weird tangy taste. Don't kid yourself about the small-bakery vibe. This is a factory: The persons at the counter lectured me that I would not be able to request a change (to skip the cheese) to a $13.75 sandwich because they make sandwiches ten at a time. But then it got weirder, because they also told me that I would have to wait for a sandwich because they were in the process of making a new batch. When I suggested that they could take cheese out of one of the new sandwiches, they rewound the factory tape to repeat that they don't make changes to sandwiches. Maybe they were rude because they don't like the policy. But I think a small place should be warm and accommodating. This place - not so much. read more

Went to Bread Furst on a Sunday morning to grab their Canelés, it was suuuper busy so you need to come early before they run out of things! The place smells great and has a lot of delicious baked goods, and perishable goods. For pastries, we got the Canelés, Coconut Custard Pie, and a Croissant, and for sandwiches we got the Jambon Beurre Ham Sandwich. We got the last two Canelés they had out for the morning, they had a crispy exterior with a deliciously soft and sweet interior, definitely one of our favorites! The Coconut Custard had a nice flakey crust, with a tasty coconut custard on the inside. The Croissant was so flakey, so buttery, super delicious! My favorite was the savory Jambon Beurre though, the Parisian baguette had a nice crunch and bite to it, and the salty savory ham in the sandwich made it a fantastic combination. Location is great, not super far from the Van Ness Metro station. The service was good for how busy the place was that morning, they were accommodating to any questions we had! The ham biscuit was just OK as my mother had describes. My English muffin on the messy egg sandwich was burnt. I had to throw that out. Bacon was nice, thick and very smoky but the scrambled eggs were a tad bit undercooked. It was a big sandwich, but since I had thrown out a lot of the bread, I was able to finish it before exploring the city. Cookie was OK. For a bakery, I had higher expectation, especially if it's bread. If I come back, perhaps I will try this spot out again but then again, I didn't enjoy the food too much. I'd say more like 3.5 stars. I came here this past Saturday to order breakfast, I've come once before for a quick grab and go lunch too. The place has no indoor seating, only outdoor, so on a very rainy day you can only take your food to go. It also gets pretty busy on a Saturday morning and the set up inside is very narrow, thus causing a long line to the door. I decided to order the messy egg (i think that was the name) sandwich, I added bacon and got it on an everything bagel. I also got a large vanilla latte with almond milk. The sandwich was good but the bacon was VERY salty. Which honestly was so disappointing because the eggs with cheese were perfectly cooked and gooey but the bacon almost ruined it. I guess I know next time to get it sans bacon. The latte was small for a large. I'm wondering if they put the wrong size on my order, but they were too packed for me to check. Otherwise, the latte was fine. I could barely taste any vanilla so I had to add a bit of sugar. I've previously gotten the ham and cheese baguette sandwich, which is good. A bit chewy but good. Overall, everything was just okay. I did like the bagel quality and how the eggs were cooked and the baguette. I'm several months behind in writing this review, but better late than never. I went in the spring, probably around 11am when there was a line out the door. It moved quickly though, and I was hungry so I ordered à jambon beurre, and a bagel and lox. Thé baguette for the jambon beurre was slightly dry but had a pretty texture overall. The bagel was delicious. Ordered an oat milk decaf latte as well which was good. They have a bunch of gourmet food products you can also buy in the shop. They knocked it out of the park with this Chocolate-Cherry Loaf for valentine's day. I got it for us in addition to a carrot cake for my hubby (his fav) since I don't love sweet stuff - it is SO soft and the crust is perfect, the chocolate is still soft and the cherries are plump and tart. What a fun place! Walk in and you can watch the bakers weighing, cutting and kneading the dough. You can see the dough on trays rising, put into the ovens and the resulting deliciousness. Wide variety of breads, pastries, spreads, sweets, cheeses and other good stuff. Exploring is fun part. Unfortunately, there are very limited whole wheat choices. I think there was just one type of bread. I enjoy their croissants and baguettes. The baguettes are near perfect with a crispy, crunchy crust and exquisitely soft interior. The store front is quite narrow so it's a little hard to see all the options and gives you little time to make the decision if you aren't familiar with their offerings. I went on a Sunday morning, the line was quite long but moved fast (separate lines for ordering and paying) and the staff was very sweet and helpful in explaining the menu. It was my first time so I went with a chocolate croissant and a loaf of whole-wheat sourdough. The chocolate croissant was solid. The structure and flakiness held up despite the cold weather and perhaps being on the counter for a while. The chocolate was great - not too sweet and the right amount. I ate it cold (not optimal) but warming it up would've made it even better. The sourdough loaf was fantastic!! Very present taste and mouth feel of whole grain, great crumb, moderately tangy. I've been wanting to try Bread Furst, and after seeing it come up on Somebody Feed Phil it gave me even more motivation to finally try it! We came Sunday morning and the line was out the door. I spotted this bread gem the evening prior at most fortunate distance of two doors down from my hotel after a Tuesday night on the town carousing around DC. (Please forward this note to the Mayor: Y'all close everything up much too early here.) Four men flicked flour in the front glass nook, they slapped and flipped molded dough as if Escoffier trained to produce the perfect product, time and time again. They smiled and I smiled back adding a mid chest wave. Bagels were the least of what they offeree and the bread menu read "Not a New York bagel, not a Montreal bagel - but out very own homemade bagel." That's not bold and brazen, that's just the truth and the Everything with butter melted in my mouth, lighting the upper buds with popping flavors of toppings. This bakery is great for anyone who likes burnt bread. I ordered a levain loaf, and when I got home and opened the bag and saw it was burnt, I called Bread Furst for a refund. When I told the woman I spoke with that my bread was burnt and black, she said "the top is supposed to be black, the owner wants a certain level of caramelization and it should look burnt". What! So apparently this is on purpose. For me this is inedible and isn't worth 50 cents let alone $9! I didn't want to walk 20 mins back in 90° heat to show them in person, so they would not offer me a refund (even though I offered to send the photo). read more
