While I was purusing, I heard the sales associates helpiing others with book searches and book club information. It sounds like they have a number of book clubs going at the same time which makes me green with envy. Somebody please open a bookstore like this in Santa Clarita Valley, Ca.! At the time of my visit there was a children's reading event going on in the children's section. There were young adults picking out their spring break reads. There is also a courtyard and coffee shop somewhat attached. I did not try the coffee, but will the next time I am in Manhattan Beach. This is a charming bookstore, well designed, with sooo many staff picks and recommendations. Make sure to pay them a visit when you are in the area. Love that their set up have tables where you can have your laptop screen against a wall (open tables if I'm working is not my thing) The overall store and restrooms are pretty dated :( but it definitely is a good go-to spot if you're needing a place to sit/work. Upon first arrival, I was greeted by a friendly employee who gave me a quick run through of how the shop works. Nice assortment of rare books, comics, and illustration collections. Lots of stuff you won't find anywhere else at very fair prices. Revisiting the shop a few days later I was greeted by the same staff member who remembered me from last time. For one of the items I purchased I was offered a brand new copy in shrink wrap vs the display copy which was a nice touch I appreciated. Give this place a visit. They also have a nice website synced with their inventory you can use for faster pickup or browsing their collection from home.

Since each Kinokuniya is basically its own franchise, every store has a different vibe. This one leans more toward stationery and gifts than a huge selection of Japanese books or magazines. It's a great date spot, but not really the place to dig for rare anime or manga collectibles. The space is smaller than some of the other LA locations, and with Animate nearby, they don't carry every item you might expect. If you want something specific, just order ahead and use their buying service--it's the move.
