My love affair with Breads Bakery began when I had my first rugelach. The butter laden layers of pastry and chocolate made my tastebuds scream with delight and I vowed to treat myself to these magnificent pastries for any occasion. If I'm feeling blue, I run to Breads for a comforting rugelach. If I'm in better spirits, I run to Breads for a celebratory rugelach. If I'm looking for a housewarming present or special item to bring to a potluck, Breads is where I go. They have never failed me. Over the years I've enjoyed multiple babkas of the classic chocolate variety and also the truly fantastic cheesecake babka they have every May. I try not to miss cheesecake babka in May, for I'll be kicking myself for the rest of the year because it really is that good. Another seasonal pastry I love from Breads is their sufganiyot, which are these amazing donuts filled with cream that are only sold during Chanukah. You should see the way my eyes light up when I bite into one, it's cartoonish, and it is a look of pure joy. Their pastries alone would make this a solid five star business, but their savory bites are just as good! They have amazing focaccia bread with olives, an excellent tunisian croissant sandwich with olive oil soaked tuna and a hard boiled egg. I've enjoyed shakshuka bread and tasty frittatas here as well. It's hard to go in just to choose one item. Fortunately, I find myself at Breads very regularly. This might be one of my first stops I make once I can leave my house again. I haven't been back to Breads since their egg, Gouda, challah sandwich made me sick. A friend asked me to pick up a babka and lemon cake for a condolence visit this afternoon. I ordered online for pick up. I called their central customer service number because you cannot call 16th Street directly. I asked if I could stand outside the shop while someone brought the bag to me. I explained I had my dog with me. This unidentified woman said over and over "we only allow service dogs". Check. Did I ask to bring my dog inside? I speak English, no need to keep repeating it. Rude woman. Too late to cancel. I couldn't even cancel the tip I stupidly left them. Dry babka too. Their standards have gone down in every way. Over expanded and do not care about quality. Go to Bread Story on 1st and 15th. They make a proper croissant and do not insult you. I've been to Breads Bakery numerous times over the years, and have tried several of their pastries, from the babka and cookies to the savory options. I returned the other day for a late breakfast, and was glad to see it's still a popular spot, despite the bustling Union Square Greenmarket right outside. The layout can be a little confusing at first. The cafe in the back is where drinks, quiches, and sandwiches are ordered; the front is the bakery, which has a nice selection of pastries at the register, as well as on a display across from it. During my last trip there, I grabbed an iced coffee and a cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll was crisp and flaky, and the iced coffee was actually one of the better coffees I've had in recent memory. We probably looked like total tourists when we walked in, taking in the smells, ooh'n & ahh'n at all the breads, i want this, hey over here...look at this. It appears the main counter for breakfast is in the back, the front seems more for if you want bread, pastries, grab, pay & go etc. Long line in the back, gave me time to decide what i wanted and sound like I know what I'm talking about when i order breakfast from the counter gal. We decided to get a breakfast egg sandwich on a poppy seed bun, a mushroom quiche and a almond croissant. Oh and a iced and drip coffee. All was delicious & tasty, well made, options to warm it up for you. Don't stray too far, they will put your order at the counter/register where you just paid. Seating is first come first serve, do what you gotta do securing a spot. A lot of people seem to meet up for little 1 on 1 meetings to talk about work, deals and IG photos. Everything here looks delicious but I have to co trip myself. Last month I went for the first time and got the lemon loaf and chocolate babka (which tasted delicious and similar to the chocolate rugelah). Soft, buttery and tender. It won't last long if you're like me and have a sweet tooth. The breads are also delicious. The olive stick was everything I'd hoped for. Came here after a boxing class (the irony is not lost on me) because it was literally right across the street! Got the chocolate babka and it was absolutely heavenly. The store is spacious with ample seating for dining in, but we had it to go. By the time we got home it was still warm and inviting. The braid was perfectly crusty and caramelized on the outside, and surprisingly soft and tender on the inside. The chocolate was sweet but not too much so. We savored every bite. Calling all chocolate cake lovers, this bakery makes the best chocolate cake ever! It has no icing thank goodness, not overly sweet, and most importantly, it's so moist. Have only been to the Lincoln Center/Bryant Park stand until we finally tried the Union Square location. As expected, it was great. The aroma of all the baked goodies is so amazing and I wish my house could smell like that all day (if calories didn't count)! Usually all of the baked goods at Breads that I've tried are great - Babkas, Jerusalem bagels, borrows, etc. This time we tried the souvganiot - chocolate and jelly flavor ($3.50 each). We were not satisfied at all. For $3.50 each, these donuts for Hanukkah should be amazingly fresh, fluffy, and filled a good amount with the jelly or chocolate filling. Instead, these donuts left the box they were in so oily and didn't taste as fresh as could be - which is odd considering we came in at 9am. The filling inside was the size of a dime (both in diameter and length). This was definitely a miss from Breads bakery which was disappointing. What a cute place with the nicest staff I've ever met. Picked up a feta salad, coffee, tzatziki, granola and muesli, almost croissant and spinach boureka. Everything was delicious - the coffee wasn't a stand out among New York coffees but that ALMOND CROISSANT is not to be missed. Today was my July 4th Celebration with my Yelp Children from Las Vegas. I arrived first and took a bunch of photos. Everything looked delicious. I wandered to the rear and found a table big enough for three. I cleaned it and the chairs off. It was full of crumbs. In the rear you order coffee and sandwich meals. There's salads too. Up front at the Bakery Counter you will find cookies and pastries. The cheesecake looked delicious. I will try it another day! Soon Ellen and Cesar arrived. Ellen kindly got in the coffee line for us. By then the line was deep. She wasn't delayed very long. I had a drip coffee for $2.50. It wasn't something I'd get again. I'm used to strong coffee. Meanwhile we both went back up front to select pastries for a light breakfast. I decided on the Cinnamon Bun. Ellen and Cesar shared a Chocolate Chip Cookie and a Cheese Danish. I had a taste of the cookie. It was really good. They each had ice coffee. An employee navigates the room with free samples. As we were leaving I tried the coconut cake sample. OMG it was delicious! When I first arrived he was giving Apple Danish samples. You could taste samples all day! They have one unisex bathroom. It's clean and wasn't too busy. I was surprised the place is smaller than I expected. I wasn't uncomfortable. I did feel a little cramped entering and exiting. Tables are very close together. The food was delicious to me. I'd get the Cinnamon Bun again. I was disappointed they didn't have the pretzel croissant. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to go back! I recommend you visit if you're hanging out near Union Square. Their chocolate babka is simply divine! They don't skimp out on the chocolate filling and the bread is just oh so buttery and soft. Tastes even better if you can warm it up a bit. If you're looking for something savory, the cheese focaccia is AMAZING. It's so fluffy with just the perfect amount of cheese on top. I got it warmed up, and only intended to eat half of it at most (mind you each slice is bigger than your face), and I ended up devouring the entire thing. LATEX GLOVES BEING USED ARE DECEIVING. I frequent and love their baked goods but there's a *big issue. Today I ordered a croissant and oatmeal cookie by the register. The guy put them in a bag and I paid with cash. He took my money without removing any of his gloves and gave me my change. I stepped away to see if the same thing was going to happen again and it did. When the person after me ordered a baguette I saw him take it with the SAME GLOVES ON that he used to take my cash and give me change. People need to pay attention when they are buying food for things like this and report it. THIS IS DISGUSTING!! This must be stopped immediately. I will need to notify the manager. I've gone to this bakery for a decade. I am very sad to report that the customer service is disappointing. The cashier literally had me bag my own items (I had purchased over $100 in baked goods) and didn't even know what was in the basque cheesecake (versus the one they used to have) or torte, and was bothered when I asked. I understand people feel stress over the holidays, but we are spending lots of money and time at your business. A little kindness and less attitude go a long way. This place is always fast and efficient and great for baked goods, quick breakfast, a New York experience for people visiting! My company would always get Chocolate or other flavor babka for us whenever we had meetings. They also have challah and various Jewish baked goods. My fav to get for friends as gifts or something to try is the choco ragelach which is 2.50 each, 6 for $12 or some other price for more. When you first walk in, if you want baked goods you go to the line in front. If you want coffee or sandwiches go to the back. Once you get your baked good you can pay at either line. They will have people grabbing your baked goods for you quickly. They have a small restroom isn't he back and seating area to eat outside and not sure about inside now. 2020 was terrible year for all of us. A few friends I lovingly called orphans were not traveling home for the holidays due to Covid. I decided to have them over to my house for Christmas dinner. I pulled out every Xmas decoration I had and spent weeks setting up. I wanted everything to be extra special for my "orphans". I even put in a makeshift tropical garden at the last minute at the entrance to the property. Rearranged furniture. Created a large table for social distancing snd created special touches all over the house and bathroom for visual ambiance. For appetizers, I served spicy shrimp in wonton cups with guacamole and sweet chili sauce, warm blend of nuts, Brie cranberry pastry puffs and honey bbq cauliflower rosettes. For dinner we had a apple blue cheese salad, potato gratin stacks, candied yams, creamy garlic asparagus and prime rib. But the piece de resistance was a chocolate babka shipped from Breads Bakery in New York City. If you've never had true chocolate babka, you have not lived. Every bakery is unique in their technique. I chose Breads Bakery because they do not mass produce their babka like Greens ( which you can find at Whole Foods). Plus, they use a blend of chocolate and Nutella which creates a unique flavor. The order is fulfilled by Goldbelly. A trio of babka was $49. Shipping to Hawaii was $69. Bwhaa!!! But, my orphans deserved it. They have all lived in New York at one time in their lives. I warmed the babka and served it with homemade whip cream. It was delightful and a wonderful way to end a perfect dinner during a difficult time for everyone. read more
